1. Good News Day Tuesday: Pictures from Last Week's Launch

Last week's launch party for WHERE DO STEAM TRAINS SLEEP AT NIGHT? was so very, very fun! Thanks so very much to Mockingbird Books for hosting this wonderful event! And thank you so very much to who attended and to all who sent their virtual good wishes!

Here are a few fun pics from the party:

And we had a green screen at the party! So everyone got to take their picture with their favorite train:

And I had the wonderful privilege of being interviewed by the Little Engineer from the amazing Play Trains website. (If you have little ones who like trains, you should definitely check this website out. It is sooooo cool!) And I am so looking forward to hearing my interview when it is all ready! Here is a picture of me being interviewed by the amazing Little Engineer (who asked me 6 great questions!):

Thanks so much for letting me toot my own good news! Do you have good news to share? Please toot-toot it with a comment below! :)

2. Good News Day Tuesday: A Book Birthday and Two Launch Parties!

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted on here! Excited to get back to blogging!

And so excited that today's "Good News Day Tuesday" is a very special one for me! Today is the book birthday for my third picture book, WHERE DO STEAM TRAINS SLEEP AT NIGHT?

Picture books take along time to come into the world (much longer than babies :) )! So I am so very excited that you can all finally see Christian Slade's amazing illustrations of train moms and train dads getting their little boy and girl trains ready for bed!

In honor of my launch day, I would love to invite you all to two special launch parties:

If you are in the Seattle area (or will be this Thursday night): You are cordially invited to my in-person launch party at the fantabulous, Mockingbird Books! I hope to see you there!!

And if you are not in the Seattle area (or even if you are but you just want to check this out too): You are cordially invited to my online Train Station Book Launch party on  my website. Just chug on over to
the party for a freight-load of train and picture book fun!

All aboard!

CHICAGO, IL – October 20, 2014 – New Chicago limited screen print society, Secret Panel, announced today that they are launching their first print series based on the Image Comics series Revival.  A beautiful ‘rural noir’ that puts a new twist on the zombie genre, created by NYT Bestselling author TIM SEELEY and acclaimed artist MIKE NORTON. Kirkus reviewed Untraceable as "A thrilling story is a dramatic entanglement of mystery, deception and teen romance.  The action flows like a brisk mountain stream interspersed with rapids, holding suspense to last page."

Unstoppable - Book 3 Summary

After everything that has happened, Grace moves to the Everglades to live with her grandmother, Birdee, and hang out with old man Rex, Birdee's "friend with benefits". Grace quickly befriends Dylan, Rex's nephew, and Dylan's girlfriend, Sadie, who is a die-hard teen activist. Sadie spends her time leading protests against the roadside zoos that run rampant in Florida with a total disregard for animals or the flimsy law.

One day while out in the marshes of the Everglades, Grace and her friends rescue an abused—and endangered—Florida panther. She and Birdee spend time rehabilitating the animal. But when the panther runs off, Grace follows it to Uncle Bob's, a large roadside zoo they all have been protesting. One that is illegally filled with a variety of endangered and exotic animals. Before she can rescue the panther, she and her friends are kidnapped by the ruthless owner and dragged deep into the Everglades for a hunting challenge.

Only this time, Grace is the prey.

During a sick game of cat and mouse, Grace and her friends are offered one chance at survival, but only if they reach civilization before being caught. With a small head start and very little supplies, only time and skill stand between the hunter and the hunted. But out in the Everglades, there may be more dangers than Grace realizes.

Against all odds, Grace must make it out alive and win, or everything she holds dear could be lost.

On Sale Now!

Also, if you're around on November 10th, I hope you'll join me and author Becky Rule for the book launch party at the New Hampshire Farm Museum in Milton, NH. There will be treats! And the world's longest sled! (Can't wait to see that.) It will be a ton of fun. More details here...

9. A MILLION SUNS Virtual Launch Party with Beth Revis

Today we’re celebrating the launch of Beth Revis’s A MILLION SUNS by participating in theVirtual Party! Each hour of the day, from 9am to 5pm EST, there will be adifferent feature on a different blog. And each stop, in true party fashion, will have a party favor to give out—in the form of a signed book plus some coolswag—and a party game: a puzzle piece to a truly epic prize for one winner! Soread on to find out exclusive information about A MILLION SUNS and enter to wina signed book!

A YABC INTERVIEW WITH BETH REVIS

I asked our team to come up with a few questions for Beth. Here's what they were dying to ask her:

1) If you discovered a new planet, what would you name it?

Oh, good question! Hmm...ummm...this is hard! I'd probably be lame and name it something boring...

2) We hear you're a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fan. Which My Little Pony are you? And do you have a friendship lesson for us today?

I really want to say that I'd be Rainbow Dash, and, therefore 20% cooler. But actually, I'm totally Twilight Sparkle. Book nerd to the end.

Today, Spike would need to dictate a letter about how important it is to remember that friends are much more important than anything, even book launches.

3) If we ever colonized the moon, would you live there?

It depends, mostly on if I could go back. Earth is pretty freaking awesome. I'm not sure I could 100% give it up. Then again, as an avid Sailor Moon freak, I think I'd also probably have to take a trip to the Lunar colony...

4) Will we learn more about the fake plague from Across the Universe in A Million Suns?

Yes! There's actually a short story that will be published in an anthology that is all about the plague and shows what it was like then. But there's also a bit more about the plague at the end of AMS--specifically about the motivation for why the "plague" happened.

12. Wende Museum launches BREAKING STALIN'S NOSE

On October 21st, The Wende Museum and Archives of the Cold War in Los Angeles launched my middle grade novel Breaking Stalin’s Nose. The program included an opening of the exhibition of drawings I made for the book and a staged reading.

Breaking Stalin’s Nose is a middle grade novel about a young man’s unveiling of truth in Stalinist Russia, while the Wende Museum is dedicated to history of Cold War-era Eastern Europe, and as such I couldn’t have hoped for a more appropriate context for the book’s launch. At the museum, an enormous collection of the Cold War artifacts is displayed in the upstairs rooms and housed in a gigantic ground level vault. Some of the museum’s artifacts including the Soviet Pioneers memorabilia and a porcelain bust of Stalin were displayed along with the drawings exhibition.

However, the highlight of the evening was a staged reading by a cast of remarkable actors. Elya Baskin, who played every evil Russian in every Hollywood blockbuster from Transformers to Austin Powers, read for Stalin in one chapter and for Stalin’s Nose in another. Brenda Wehle, a renowned stage actress who began her career at the famous Guthrie Theatre Company in Minneapolis and went on to play many memorable roles on and off-Brodway read for the schoolteacher Nina Petrovna, and in the last chapter, for a woman waiting to visit her son in the Lubyanka prison. Young Bryce Robinson read for the hero of the book Sasha Zaichik. Bryce began his career at age six, impressing the viewers with his performance in television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Monk, October Road, Dexter, and movies -- Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and The Switch. And lastly, Timur Bekbosunov, a Kazakh-American opera tenor known for his solo appearances with the LA Philarmonic, American Repertory Theater, Opera Boston as well as performances with his band the Dime Museum sang Stalinist songs mentioned in the book.

We read six chapters from the book. This is how we began.

Happy Launch Day to The Liar Society!

Since when do the dead send emails?

Kate Lowry's best friend Grace died a year ago. So when she gets an email from her, Kate's more than a little confused.

Kate,
I'm here... sort of.
Find Cameron. He knows.
I shouldn't be writing.
Don't tell. They'll hurt you.

Now Kate has no choice but to prove once and for all that Grace's death was more than just a tragic accident. She teams up with a couple of knights-in-(not-so)-shining armor-the dangerously hot bad boy, Liam, and her lovestruck neighbor, Seth. But at their elite private school, there are secrets so big people will do anything to protect them-even if it means getting rid of anyone trying to solve a murder...

14. Happy Launch Day! Across the Universe by Beth Revis!

As most of you know, us Southerns are pretty much shut down due to six inches of snow.

We never get snow so basically we are all trapped inside - killing each other, renting movies, and eating junk.

But......

I'm poking my head out of the snow for a minute to wish my good friend Beth Revis a wonderful launch day today.

I met Beth online a couple years ago way before we had agents. When we each probably had less than 10 followers and a dream. I loved meeting her finally in person this fall for drinks and am happy to see her day finally here after all the struggles and hard work.

Across the Universe is hitting the stores and everyone needs to go get this book. I got an ARC early last fall and loved the whole creativity and world building around this book.

As the spaceship Godspeed travels toward a new earth, the lives of 100 cryogenically frozen settlers hang in the balance after someone endeavors to quietly murder them. The other passengers aboard the ship have never known life outside its walls and are enslaved by the machinations of Eldest, their tyrannical leader, who divides them into three distinct classes. When Amy, a frozen settler from earth, survives being thawed in a murder attempt, she immediately bonds with Elder, Godspeed's lone teen and future leader. Amy’s individuality, her rebellion, and her fierce desire for freedom, inspire Elder to act on his own doubts and defy Eldest--his mentor and keeper--with shocking results.
The book's web site launches today so go check out the space ship blueprints! So cool.

Or check out all the stuff going on at Beth's site.

Happy Book Bday Beth! Can't wait to see you soar to the stars - at Godspeed :)

Ill announce all the ARC winners later this week after I dig myself out of the ice.

15. Awaiting the Release

Morning.

I couldn’t have asked for a better day for the Christmas e-release of my debut novel, DRIVEN. Not sure what the weather is like where you live, but here we have soft falling snow (not enough to make driving nutty or force the shovels out of storage–just pretty to watch as it falls). All in all I’m in a very Christmasy mood which I would like to share with you.

Soon, Amazon should be posting the Kindle version of DRIVEN for all to purchase (I’ll post the link as soon as it’s live). In the meantime, I would like to invite you all to a different kind of Christmas party–A virtual book launch party. Here’s the skinny:

When: Thursday, December 2, 2010 (yup, tomorrow) from 7 – 8pm (CST)

Where: DRIVEN‘s Facebook Fan Page (click here and you’ll be taken right to it). You’ll need to “like” the page to participate in the give-a-ways and the discussions.

Why: There will be gifts given away every ten minutes, time to ask the author about the publishing journey and the cast of characters (among other things), and did I mention gifts? (Oh yeah, it’s Christmas–I love Christmas)

What: Here’s the gift list–Two copies of Sandi Rog’s THE MASTER’S WALL, A copy of UNLOCKED by Karen Kingsbury, Brandilyn Collins RAYNE TOUR Trilogy (yup all three), one of the first paperback copies of DRIVEN, and a $25 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

Hope to see you there!

No Calorie e-Cookies.

16. GIANNA Z. Launch Chapter 2: The Koffee Kat Book Bash

After teaching all day, then heading straight to my favorite coffee shop for this afternoon's GIANNA Z. launch party, and signing books for two hours straight...I am pretty much out of words tonight.  Pictures will probably do a better job anyway, of capturing the brilliant fun and sheer joy of sharing this book launch with such amazing friends, colleagues, and students.

Thanks so, so much to everyone who stopped by today - it was an afternoon I'll never forget.

17. GIANNA Z. Launch Chapter 1: In which I hug friends, sign books, and eat too much candy corn

Yesterday's launch party for THE BRILLIANT FALL OF GIANNA Z. at Flying Pig Books was...well...it was the stuff launch party dreams are made of.  So many kids, teachers, readers, and friends, along with a great place for a party -- the beautiful, light-filled Flying Pig Loft.  We got there early to set up...

We had a drawing for a free school/library presentation.  (Mrs. Althoff, congratulations!  My son drew your name out of the bag.  I'll email you today so we can start figuring out the details!)

I was excited that the silicone bracelets I ordered - red and gold swirled with the book title embossed - arrived on time!  And those are Nonna's famous funeral cookies from the book on the plate with the candy corn.  (If you weren't there to eat some, you can download the recipe from my books page!)

My daughter helped me set up by placing a sugar maple leaf on each chair before the guests arrived.  That's the tree Gianna and Zig are trying to identify in the book in the excerpt I chose to read, so I thought it would be fun for kids to follow along with a leaf as they tried to figure out whether it had teeth or lobes, a downy underside or not, milky sap...all those tree identifying things.

After the reading, kids had a chance to try their own hands at identifying leaves.  I set up a tree identification challenge - with photographs of three different trees and branches from each one.  Kids used the Watts Tree Finder guide - the same book Gianna and Zig use in the novel - to identify trees and win prizes.

And then it was party time!

Here I am with Flying Pig co-owner and picture book author Elizabeth Bluemle. Note her stylish accessories.

From left to right: Jo Knowles ([info]jbknowles ) me, Cindy Faughnan ([info]cfaughnan )

Jo and Cindy and some other friends made long morning drives to be here, and it just about made me cry every time one of them walked through the door. My friend [info]marjorielight came over on the ferry from NY and brought her daughter Stephanie, who drove up from Albany for the weekend.  Stephanie is in graduate school to become a children's librarian right now, and she's one of my former students (also a survivor of the original monster leaf collection project that inspired my book!)

Me, Marjorie, & Stephanie

At the end of my reading, I took a minute to introduce the other authors & illustrators who were there.  In addition to Jo and Elizabeth, there were Sarah Dillard, Amy Huntington, Liza Woodruff, and Tanya  Lee Stone.  "Wow," my husband said when we were packing up the car. "You children's book people really support one another, don't you?"  We've talked about that before...how the people who work in this field are some of the nicest people around.  It's one of so many things I love about writing for kids.

The morning flew by like leaves in a gust of autumn wind... I hugged lots of friends, read from my novel, ate entirely too much candy corn, signed lots of books (including a bunch for far-away friends!  When I came down to the store after the party, Josie presented me with a stack of "virtual book signing" copies. If you ordered one, it's all signed and will be in the mail next week!) I'm so, so thankful to everyone who came out on the last weekend of summer and to the folks at Flying Pig, who always make an author feel so special.

When the last book was signed, we headed to the nearby Shelburne Museum for a picnic with Jo Knowles and her family.  My daughter and Jo's son got to be pals at her launch party for JUMPING OFF SWINGS a few weeks ago, so it was great to spend the afternoon together. Sitting on the grass, exploring the steamboat Ticonderoga, and riding the antique carousel seemed like just the right way to end the day.

18. Launching Powers of Persuasion

early-bird-banner.JPG

One of the many upsides to being a publicist is getting to attend launch parties for our books. Of course, organizing them is hard work, but the night itself can be a lot of fun. We OUP-UK publicists were last week at what is shaping up to be our party of the season for the launch of Winston Fletcher’s Powers of Persuasion: The Inside Story of British Advertising, which publishes here later this week. Below are some photos from the event.

Yesterday we posted a piece written by Winston Fletcher for OUPblog on when the British led the world in advertising.

Held at London’s incredibly beautiful Somerset House, we had a wonderful turn out including many of the great and the good from Britain’s ad-land, past and present. Winston gave an excellent speech where he confessed that though he had reached the top of his profession - he is the only person to have been both the Chairman of the Advertising Association and the President of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising - he didn’t work for long in the creative side of the business. ‘Why?’, you ask. Well, when he did work in the creative side, he was the one who came up with the strapline “Have no fear, your piles will disappear!” for a campaign. He then decided he was better suited to the business side of advertising.

Also in attendance was former government Culture Secretary Chris Smith who is the current Chairman of the Advertising Standards Authority. He is pictured below with Winston Fletcher.

19. Really? Really?

That’s what I kept on thinking as I read this article about James Patterson’s YA books in the New York Times.

There are a lot of choice quotes, like:

According to market research conducted by Codex Group on behalf of Little, Brown, more than 60 percent of the readers of the “Maximum Ride” series are older than 35.

Also,

Little, Brown has also asked booksellers to shelve hardcover editions of the new “Maximum Ride” title and “Daniel X” in the adult section. Six months after hardcover publication, it will release a paperback version for the young-adult sections of the bookstores, and six months after that a mass-market paperback edition for the adult shelves.

Another NYT article, about product placement in a new tween series, has been making waves. TadMack sums up the issue beautifully, so go read that.

And one more link to the Times. According to a new study, teenage boys’ motivation in relationships is not primarily about sex or physical attractiveness. Which, I must say, is really making me think about how guys and romantic relationships are depicted in YA books.
