The Month of Fear is a weekly art challenge for the month of October, created by illustrator Kristina Carroll. A companion blog to February’s Month of Love, the idea is to inspire artists to get together, shake things up, push themselves, and create new personal work.
A curated roster of artists have been selected to participate and are challenged to create a new piece each week in response to an assigned theme related the subject of fear. But, the challenge is also open to anyone who feels inspired, by sharing work on Tumblr using the hashtag #monthoffear. The challenges are designed to be open-ended so artists can interpret them in a wide variety of ways.
This is the third year of the Month of Fear, and the work is incredibly impressive! With challenge themes ranging from villians, spooky mirrors, and the dance of death—the images are all frightfully fantastic! A few highlighted pieces here by Reiko Murakami, Sam Flegal, Lindsey Look, and Samuel Araya.
Check out the Month of Fear site for much more!

Monday, September 14th
I was so excited about my new coloring book coming out that I just had to share some pages with a couple of my closest friends and see how it went!
Needless to say, the ladies fully enjoyed their time coloring with some colored pencils. They actually had a hard time choosing which image to start with!

Ever feel like your head is swarming with the busyness and buzzing of a bee hive?? That's me, today, present.
After an amazing weekend at the World of Faeries Festival -
Where I got to meet so many followers, see first hand how my work impacts others, hear the stories that come with learning people, making new friends, and watching little children in awe of fairies in the flesh walking about (adults dressed up of course). Not to mention all that Brian and I learned as vendors, the time away from Norah, and seeing old friends on our way back home...
- I am so full of ideas and have the feeling of
NEED in regards to getting my business into order. We are on a new path, one I never thought I'd do. One that has changed many things. Including what products I sell and which ones I need to provide.
I didn't think it was possible with the income I make, that it was possible for ME to handle! So many little things to get into order, so many people to give my energy to....but it was so F U N!! I felt satisfied with my work, like it served a purpose, aspiring little girls to be artists as they watched me paint, and then older adults sparked by inspiration to pick up the brush again. Wow, just wow! Did I mention the joy of little girls with fairy wings dancing about?? I couldn't help but walk around with a huge smile on my face. Pure joy.
So to the buzzing in my head I say this, I need to get you out.
I will be taking a time of leave, starting next week, and returning August 24th. I need to have time to sit and give my business some serious attention. I am always scattered in a million directions, and I am overwhelmed with this sense that I should just sit down, write it all out, and make a plan for the rest of the year. To do this I need my other busy bees to visit a different garden.
With the holidays right on the horizon, and with so many ideas to execute by then, including two more shows (Oy!), it hurts now, but will be well worth it later to take this time off. It's so scary to leave the social media for two weeks, processing orders, and connecting with my followers. A lot of "What ifs" begin to fill my head. Fear. Lots of fear that my business will suffer for it. But the doubt and fear only makes me want to do it more, as I know that is how it usually works.
The more I'm afraid of it, the more I want to go through it. Things will always be hard, things will always turn out unexpected, but if I just fly and keep my eyes on the light, I can not fail.

Lately there has been so much information on how to run a business, so much to read and prepare, that I feel like I'm falling behind while moving ahead. Crazy how it works eh?
I haven't forgotten about my blog or my newsletter, or Facebook for that matter, but working out new schedules, system for what I offer where, and how to find "me" time in it all. Because let's face it, when you can't take care of yourself, what you give out is no where near what you hoped it would be.
Wings are getting a bit clipped over on my end, but all for the better. Thank you for all of your patience and support. :)
It's been a couple of weeks since I've been present on my blog, so many things to do! Summer is a very busy time, how do families fit in vacations and outings?! Maybe it's my profession and the start of attending faires that makes it feel like a lot.
I played in iMovie today to see how much I could learn in an hour, the video below is the result. Unfortunately while filming the painting process my phone continued to run out of space, so there are steps missing, like the entire painting of the middle fairy, and the completion of the third fairy.
Yet, alas, it's a time lapse video nonetheless and I learned a lot about iMovie!
Enjoy.

Have you ever Googled yourself? I do. It might look pretentious, but it really gives an insight to where your name is being used, and for me that includes my art. Thankfully I never find much of anything except for my own posts AND these gorgeous cards!
I license out my images to an online craft store called Crafts and Me based in the UK. She sells digital stamps and some rubber ones too. On her blog they host challenges for those who love to make their own cards and paper crafts.
You can find all of my digital stamps here ☞ http://www.craftsandme.co.uk/-c-218_240.html
Find my rubber stamps here ☞ http://www.craftsandme.co.uk/-c-290_211.html
It always gives me the biggest smile when I see these. Be sure to visit their blogs for more lovelies and inspiration!

How scary is it to you to just begin doodling onto a piece you admire and have 'finished'?
What if I told you is healthy and wise to do this from time to time? I believe it is. As an instructor I always look for ways to push my students ever so slightly out of their comfort zone (or sometimes, way out of their comfort zone...but more on that a different time).
Doodling straight onto the watercolor, around or on an already exisiting piece, demands several thoughts at once. You thinking about composition, you make your marks with more meaning and intent, but at the same time you're doodling!
What is doodling?
doo·dle
verb (used with object), verb (used without object), doo·dled, doo·dling.1.to draw or scribble idly: He doodled during the whole lecture.2.to waste (time) in aimless or foolish activity.3.Dialect . to deceive; cheat.noun4.a design, figure, or the like, made by idle scribbling.5.Archaic. a foolish or silly person.
So let's focus on the art part. In all seriousness, it's to not think, yet to just do idly. When you doodle on a piece that you've already invested in you're using both your right brain and your left. A great exercise!
I encourage you to find a piece, one that MATTERS to you, one you've INVESTED in, and do some doodling upon it. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, just something you ENJOY.
Look up
Zentangles if you haven't before, they're great inspiration. ;)
What does it do for the art? It's great for the mind and practice, but what does it really do for the art? How is this a tip for drawing?
Doodles are loose, highly creative, and usually detailed. They can add a great layer of interest and some of the best ideas, ones that can compliment your subject, will come through. It will keep the viewer's eyes moving and interested.
I find some of my best backgrounds come when I don't plan them. I'm interested in seeing what you've done. Please post in the comments below and share your work!
Once upon a time, mommy and daddy needed to go on a date. So they called Aunt Megan to come over and babysit. Suddenly, while Aunt Megan and the boy where playing in their room, climbing up the ladder and going down the slide, a bright blue light appeared at the bottom of the slide. Before they could blink *whooosh* they had slid down the slide and through the portal.
Suddenly, they found themselves in a strange new place….
My best friend got to make a suggestion for a painting, and this is the result.
You may note, that she was quite upset to find out that she was missing the adventure just to see a movie. I told her not to worry, I’m sure upon returning from their date and finding the children missing and a strange blue portal, SURELY they could investigate….
Some sketches for my current project.

Step one: Finish the sketch.
Step two: Scan and trace using light box, from print out onto watercolor paper. Using hot press 140lbs.
Step three: Tape down prepared drawing and spray with clean water, patting down gently with paper towel. Let dry and blog steps. ;)
Onto step four: Lay in under painting....

Here is some more art inspired by the Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch. She is a Gothic Steampunk Witch wearing a curly hat and brown dress with a skull belt. At first this was just a simple sketch. I was working on note cards to sell at my Etsy store. But as I continue working on it, it turned into a full painting. I definitely got a lot of enjoyment out of painting her.
I have her available as a print for sale in my Etsy store. Gothic Steampunk Witch is printed on archival heavyweight 8.5″ x 11″ paper with a 1″ white boarder around the image for easy matting. Comes unframed and unmatted. Colors are bright and beautiful. Netter than on screen. Signed by me!

For the past couple of years selling fairy tale art at various conventions and art shows, I have heard many people ask about Wizard of Oz. After seeing how well my Alice in Wonderland Characters have been received, I have decided to create a new character series for Oz. As always I like to add my own twist on popular stories. For my first painting of the series, I have the Wicked Witch of the West in Steampunk style. Because I love Steampunk and fairy tales, the idea of combining the two was irresistible to me.
I have hand-painted all of the textured layers you see in this digital painting.

Introducing the Gothic Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland Antique Style Pendant. Monsters are not just for Halloween anymore. Even as a grotesque zombie, the Mad Hatter seems to keep his elegant charm. If you like Alice in Wonderland but want to see something beyond the Disney or Tim Burton version, than this pendant was made just for you.
The Mad Hatter has a corpse-like greenish complexion and vacant zombie eyes. He is wearing his traditional suite and funky bow tie and an oversize top hat. On top of the hat sits a little pesky demon ready to munch on some brains.
The glass cameo is set in a beautiful Antique Vintage Bronze Setting. The whole piece measures 40mm Tall x 35mm Wide.
It comes with a vintage Antique bronze chain. The chain is 24″ in length but can easily be adjusted to any length. Please convo me if you would like it shortened.

Fairy Redhead Girl and Husky Puppy is a cute painting of a little redheaded fairy and her adorable canine companion. Every dreamy-eyed girl needs a lovable pup. She is wearing a green dress and she has curly red hair. She has her hand around a little husky dog. I have to of my favorite things in this painting: Huskies and fairies. Also I’m redhead so I guess just painted myself with my dream dog.
This Print is 8 1/2″ x 11″ with a white 1″ inch border around the image for easy framing. Printed on high quality archival Epson ink jet paper. It comes unframed. Beautiful vibrant colors. Looks even better in person than on screen.
I have this print now available in my Etsy store.

I was born in Russia but lived in America my whole life. Still I love to look back to my roots and explore the beautiful rich culture that my family is from. I love different cultures so I wanted to honor this one with this lovely piece. Originally I painted her for a Culture themed art show that I have curated about a year ago. Eventually I would love to explore other cultures and traditions as well.
Russian Doll Fairytale Fantasy Art Print is a beautiful illustration of a cute girl wearing Russian traditional costume. With a dreamy expression, she is holding a nesting doll in her hands.
This is a 8.5″ x 11″ print on good quality archival ink jet paper with a white 1″ inch border around the image.
This piece is part of a new brand Little Fairytale Art that I am creating along side my darker brand. I will post more about it later on.

Girl Who Loves Lemurs is one of my signature pieces. A little girl is holding a heart balloon while standing next to a big swirly tree while a lemur is watching her. She is wearing an orange animal hoodie with little ears. The background is green. This can make a great gift for someone you love or for yourself.
This is a set of 2 rings. One with the girl holding the balloon and the other with the lemur. The full image is on the very last photo so you can see what the original painting looks like.
