During a recent trip to New York, I had the pleasure of visiting the illustrious designer, Jessica Hische. In addition to creating wonderfully precise type, such as her Daily Drop Cap series, Jess carefully curates her incredible studio / home that I’m proud to feature on the site today. In today’s studio visit, she gives us advice on collecting furniture, and has a pretty awesome surprise at the end! Take a peep…
How long have you had your studio for?
[Since] November 2008
What do you like most about your space?
It feels warm. Because I did most of my decorating and painting last winter, everything is really bold and richly colored instead of light and airy. The color palette for the space is pretty much exactly the same as the color palette I use in my illustration work.
What are some of your favorite objects?
My Alex DaCorte piece “Just give me a fucking chance!,” the intense 70’s / 80’s record collection I inherited from my mom (think “Meatloaf” not “New Order,”) and the awesome artyporny framed photo my boyfriend took in college.
You have an amazing array of Mid-century modern furniture. How long has it taken you to collect your pieces? Do you have any tips on organizing and collecting?
It’s taken me about a year to collect everything (except for my chaise lounge which I bought 4 years ago in Philadelphia). Tips: Buy a new, good sofa. Older sofas might look nice but they won’t be as comfortable unless you do some major

Sanna Annukka Limited Edition Wooden Soul Birds
Sanna Annukka recently launched a new portfolio and online store. I love these solid brown oak Soul Birds which are now available for pre-orders in her shop. I’ll have to add these to my Christmas list!
On her website, Sanna shares this bit about the the Soul Bird which stems from Finnish mythology. “In Karelia there was an ancient belief in the Sielulintu or Soul bird. The Sielulintu was thought to deliver the soul to newborn babies and also to transport the soul to the afterlife at the moment of death.
It was believed the Sielulintu protected a persons soul at it’s most vulnerable; when dreaming, and it was tradition to keep a carved wooden bird by the bedside to keep the soul safe during sleep.”

Pen Pencil Stencil is the online home and physical workspace of Mark Giglio. Mark is an amazing illustrator/ designer who’s worked on projects with a diverse mix of companies including: 2k by Gingham, Apple, Dwell, GSP, Nike, Tolleson Design, and others. Recently I had the pleasure of hanging out with Mark at his Oakland based studio.
How do you like working in Oakland?
I really like working in Oakland. I like the slower pace is has to San
Francisco and the weather is warmer too. I’ve been here for 17 years now
so I’m kind of attached to it.
What do you like most about your space?
Having my own space to work in. Being at my studio is my favorite place to
be. All my favorite objects, books and personal projects are there. It’s
my place to experiment and think. If I have to work outside my studio on a
project for someone it is always the best feeling to return to it again.
What are some of your favorite objects in your studio?
My favorite things hands down in my studio are my books. I love books and
love the books I’ve collected. I can go to public libraries for hours and
search for things. Then the best thing on my bookshelf that isn’t a book
would have to be my La Fonda Del Sol menu designed by Alexander Girard.

Back in June we posted about the launch of House Industries’ Photo-Lettering website. I knew it was just a matter of time before some of those tasty Photo-Lettering typefaces ended up on a slab of wood. That time has come. Last week House announced the release of the Photo-Lettering (Plinc) alphabet blocks as well as a new serigraph series.
To celebrate the new line of Photo-Lettering products we’ve teamed up with House Industries for a special giveaway.

The blocks are made in Michigan out of replenishable locally-grown basswood and are printed with lead-free non-toxic inks.

Candles are beautiful and usually specially scented. They can brighten a gloomy day as well as help people through a bad thunderstorm that may be headed their way. Storms can be frightening; however a candle can save the day.
These candles of multiple purposes represent light and how dark the world would look without it. Think! How distressing would the world look without the sun’s bright light? It’s the same feeling you get when a storm hits and there’s no candle in sight.
God said at the beginning of time.” Let there be light.” As time went on different types of light came about. Lamps were used with kerosene. Time passed and flashlights were invented. These were nice handy tool for all darken situations. Candles are still many peoples favorite inexpensive way to see this world in a more comfortable setting.

Candles are used in church to show reverence and honor for a place of worship. During wedding many churches allow the bride and groom to light a candle for this special occasion. It’s about understanding that God is the third candle. It’s about learning to keep all three candles lit in their married life. The three candles are to represent the man, the woman, and God. The pastors talks about how all three candles must stay lit in order for a marriage to be prosperous. Candles are meaningful in many ways.
Why do you like candles? Think about this answer and do practice using them for your special occasions. It could be you love candle on a dark cloudy day. A candle can enhance a cloudy day and make it a mysterious adventure of an evening watching TV’s finest. A snack would make this candle a night to remember.

Apartment Therapy posted photos of Sam Grawe’s apartment yesterday as part of their 2008 home tour series. Sam is the Editor-in-Chief at the San Francisco based Dwell Magazine. If you are unfamiliar with Dwell, it is a magazine that focuses on modern architecture and design.
Sam has lots of goodies in his house. The place is filled with Danish modern furniture, Bertoia chairs and Scandinavian nic nacs. What did me in was the record covers and the owls. This is a man that loves owls! He has a slew of these Edvard Lindahl looking ceramic miniature birds of prey. Too be fair, it looks he holds no Owl biases. I see examples of Strigidae (Heck yea, I’m name dropping) as well as the barn yard variety. I actually know nothing about Owls. I picked all this up in a two minute search at Wikipedia. Anyways, I’m getting off track. To sum up, just check out the house tour.
