Happy Valentine's Day! I know it was yesterday, but a holiday about Love should last so much longer than one day....how about every day? No? Well, we can start with a week. ;)
Valentine's Day is all about the love we share and feel towards those most important to us. Love is very important to me, to share with others....especially those that I don't know, because everyone needs it. A truth that is always good to share.
Today I want to share something with you, an original drawing...the first original drawing of my Mermaid Portrait series for my upcoming coloring book.

Woo hoo! It's Perfect Picture Book Friday!
And not just ANY Perfect Picture Book Friday, mind you, but the one that's the day before Valentine's Day!
This is great!, I thought gleefully to myself last week. Surely there are a plethora - a PLETHORA, I say - of fantabulous Valentine's books that have been waiting all year for this day - THEIR day - the one time they can rightfully be shared! I did a small jig in anticipation.
But day after day has gone by as I've searched for a great Valentine's Day book to share, and good golly if I haven't been just flat-out underwhelemed by titles I was hoping would knock my socks off! (I myself have written two Valentine's books: A Valentine For Phyllis, which apparently failed to knock Holiday House's socks off since they declined the opportunity to publish it, and Be Mine, which left my agent's socks drooping around her ankles because, as she said, it's so hard to sell books that are only holiday books, so my efforts have been underwhelming too! Oh, plus I mustn't forget my dreadful entry in the Valentine's Contest of 2012 - a "story" that just proves that with a low enough word count requirement I can barely make sense! :) But we seem to have gotten off on a tangent here... and by "we" I mean would you guys please stop asking about my Valentine stories? Sheesh! We're here for Perfect Picture Books!)
Anyway, it would be morally wrong to post a book for Perfect Picture Books that I did not consider Perfect just so I could post a Valentine's Day book. So instead, I will repost one of my favorite love books.
I am downright tingly with excitement because it is arguably one of the best love stories ever. Are you ready? It involves slugs. What's not to love? :)

Why I Like This Book: It's sweet and it's funny. It's maybe not technically a Valentines Day book (as in, it's not about Valentines Day) but it is about love/friendship on a level that I think kids can relate to. Because Marylou and Herbie can't seem to connect, there's the added fun of rooting for the heroes. And the art complements the story perfectly. It's so wonderful - really, I think it takes a genius to make slugs look so expressive :)

Be sure and visit Google’s front page today for an animated Valentine’s Day short with music by Tony Bennett. For a Google Doodle, it’s an impressively long piece. I hope they’ll be doing more of these long-form animated pieces in the future. I’m not totally sure on the credits, but I believe the director was Willie Real and the animator was Michael Lipman (aka Lippy). Also, kudos to Google for not being afraid to slip in a nod to gay marriage.

I would like to start a new tradition around here, and I want it to be something special given at least once a year.
I want to give away a painting, and I think Valentine's Day is the perfect time.

I created this piece just for the giveaway, and it's particularly special because of how I went about the process. In my previous post I mentioned I was going to take a watercolor class and I found many awesome videos/tutorials on youtube.
I applied much of what I learned, and something clicked last night as I completed
"Love Floats". I am VERY excited to see the new discovery in my later work.
(discovery will be revealed in next blog post)
Why the original giveaway? I truly believe my artwork goes to those it was intended for, and I know in these times it can be difficult to obtain something extra that isn't a necessity.

I was inspired by these cards by
Ellzabelle on Twelve Crafts till Christmas. She has an easy tutorial her blog. I used some leftover scraps that were too cute to throw out, but I didn't know what to do with. I made about twenty of them while watching Desperate Housewives - it really is that easy... I cut out patterns from the fabric on the flowered ones, but I really love the cute cut-out shapes she did on her cards.

The kids are finally back in school for more than one day consecutively, the power is back on, and I just finished reading the first batch of email from readers of Light Beneath Ferns.
Valentines Day here was like something I would edit out of a YA I was writing. Since we were still snowed in pretty much (we could go on the roads, but it was scary cold and really icy), I made cupcakes and got a bunch of decorating stuff for Emma. Or so I thought.
Somehow we ended up on Valentines night with teenagers and a very, very impromptu Valentines Day party. I never thought teens would want to stay in the kitchen with me and Emma, but they proved me wrong. Not only did they make more cupcakes, they mixed icing and used all the sprinkles and hearts. They actually stayed in there and talked to me. I love what they did with the icing:
Of course, Philip had on his hat (you know how little kids like certain things, like belts or bracelets? Philip has always loved hats) Here he is with Emma and friend:
And yesterday I found out I was a paranormal romance writer. I didn't know that. But that's ok, paranormal romance is a perfectly acceptable sub genre. The only thing is, I don't write about vampires. And that seems to be a problem.
It's not that I have anything against vampires, and I'm sure there are good stories out there involving vampires, but I don't write them. In fact, I don't even read them. And if you like them, that's what you like and you should read all kinds of vampire books. Vampires just seem silly to me for the most part.
But somehow, somewhere, LBF got tagged "vampire" and a couple of people bought it and wrote to me complaining that they read the whole novel and there was no vampire. Not one.
They're right; there isn't a vampire in LBF. I'm not sure how books get tagged or who does the tagging, but just in case you are planning on reading it, be prepared for a very pronounced absence of vampires. The kids did talk me into walking in a Halloween parade in a vampire (vampress?) costume, but other than that, I live and write a completely vampire free life.
Maybe it's because I live in the New Jersey Pinelands which happens to be the tic capital of the world. According to the produce clerk at the local Acme, there are more tics here per square mile than any other place in the world. So maybe the whole idea of bloodsucking hits just a little too close to home.
KJ put out the sweetest challenge the other day when she walked around her house taking pictures of things with hearts. She asked us to do the same thing, promising we'd be amazed at how many we have! During my little stroll around the abode I noticed I also have a couple of "Love" items that are important to me so I've included them as well. Ready? Let's go for a walk.
Every day I wake up to my wonderful birth mandala made by my dear friend Marianne in the Netherlands.
This has 33 hearts of gold on it!
This is the sign on my studio door. No grumpy people are allowed in there. Only positive energy!
Still in my studio, I walk over to my memo board and zoom in on a card from my dear 75 year old second cousin whom I've never met. We've been writing for 10 years!
The wonderful raven ATC is from Marianne. Her presence is everywhere :)
Next up is a valentine present I bought for myself on Etsy. I just wish he came with my initial!
The people made a mistake and sent me another one but they told me to keep it and enjoy it when I offered to send it back.
Here is another classroom craft we have done recently in Kindergarten for Valentine's Day. This one is thanks to
Marie at Make and Takes and
Craftzine for the tutorial. It was really easy to do the supplies in bulk: cut out and hole punch hearts, cut up straws and measure string for necklaces. One note, I discovered that wrapping a bit of tape around one end of the yarn, prevents fraying and frustration and makes for easier lacing. The children all loved wearing theirs. Also a great craft for making patterns - AB with the straw then heart, then ABCD (or whatever) with the coloured hearts.
Once a week I go and help in the kids classroom and the past couple of times we have been doing Valentine's Stuff, On this day each child did a chain of hearts in a pattern on a string. We used construction paper and it was really great because the hearts didn't slide around. It made for an easy garland., one punch on each side of the heart. The best part is the kids really liked doing it and over half the classroom was covered in a string of hearts (each end was tied to another and twisted around thumbtacks.
I have a lot of pictures with the kids making this but I don't think it would be right to post other people kids on my blog without asking them. Next time I'll try and take more pictures of just the projects for you guys!
