1. Marvel to publish never-seen Miracleman stories by Grant Morrison and Peter Milligan

a_560x0

Although the Miracleman reprints by Marvel have more or less been business as usual and not the apocalypse, news of never-before seen Miracleman stories by Grant Morrison and Peter Milligan is still exciting. Vulture has the deets on a new Miracleman Annual #1 which will be out on December 31st and include a long-lost story written by Morrison, now found and drawn by Joe Queseda, and an all new story written by Milligan with art by Mike Allred. The cover is by Gabriele Dell’Otto, and the variant by Jeff Smith.

The Morrison story was unearthed in an article right here on the Beat written by Pádraig Ó Méalóid. Given the long antipathy between Morrison and Moore, it’s a surprising detail but according to Morrison in the Talking with Gods documentary, the story being spiked when it was written in the mid-80s might have been one of the root causes of the feud. Morrison said:

I didn’t want to do it without Moore’s permission, and I wrote to him and said, “They’ve asked me to do this, but obviously I really respect you work, and I wouldn’t want to mess anything up. But I don’t want anyone else to do it and mess it up.” And he sent me back this really weird letter, and I remember the opening of it, it said, “I don’t want this to sound like the softly hissed tones of a mafia hitman, but back off.”

With Miracleman back, Marvel started asking about the story and Morrison requested that Quesada draw it — it’s his first interior art in quite a while.

Milligan’s story is bit nostalgic as well, he told Vulture:

“We’re doing a story that, if you like, looks at the Mick Anglo years, what might be seen on the outside as the innocent, old-fashioned years,” Milligan told me. “There’s a scintilla of self-awareness, with Marvelman being — I don’t want to give too much away, but the story is not without some awareness that it’s all going to change very quickly. It’s an homage. All the guys are there, all the craziness.”

Marvel confirmed that the Neil Gaiman-written conclusion to the Miracleman story—now nearly 30 years in the planning—is still in the works. Finegrs crossed!

2. Preview: ALL-NEW DOOP #1 by Milligan and LaFuente

All-New_Doop_1_CoverThe Milligan/Allred run on X-Statix from 2002-2004 is often looked back on as an example of the freewheeling creativity that Marvel had for a brief period before worries about selling characters to the movies forced things to button down. But of late, that quirky streak seems to have returned—perhaps because we live in a world that is eagerly awaiting a Guardians of the Galaxy movie and Rocket Raccoon is soon to be turned into a Disney ride (metaphorically speaking.)

Anyway here’s a look at ALL-NEW DOOP #1 written by Peter Milligan with art by David LaFuente, a cover by Mike Allred and a variant by Adi Granov.

Who is Doop? Actually…what is Doop? Living in the margins of the X-Men, Doop’s origins have always remained shrouded in mystery as he hovered around with his video camera – freaking out readers and fellow X-Men alike. But his time has finally come! Where did Doop come from? What is he? All your questions will be answered! And this adventure will prove once and for all that Doop is, in fact, the most powerful X-Man! From the pages of the blockbuster X-Men crossover Battle of the Atom comes the story you didn’t see! Did you know Doop was an integral part of stopping the evil X-Men from the future? Don’t believe us? You will!

ALL-NEW DOOP  #1 goes on sale April 9th.

3. Art Wall: spaceships, Strange and Sonic

TweetFriday is art day! Friday is also the harbinger of the weekend, but who cares about that? Instead, take a look at all the pretty pictures I gathered for you from the shady, cob-webby corners of the Internet you dare not venture… (I can’t say more) FF by Mike Allred (you HAVE to click on this to [...]

4. Marvel Showcase Fraction’s Fantastic Four and FF – But Defenders is Cancelled

By Steve Morris

Marvel have spent this week showing off shiny covers for their Marvel NOOOWWWWWW!!! rebranding, and I’ll gather them all together at the end of the week (Friday, just so you know) for you to look into. But USA Today have today revealed the first cover for Matt Fraction and Mike Allred’s ‘FF’ series and, well…

So the book is heading in a radically new direction, you can see. Not only does the focus seem to have moved away from the students enrolled at Reed Richards’ ‘Future Foundation’, but it’s moved towards Ant Man, Medusa, She-Hulk, and… a woman wearing a Thing costume.

This sounds like exactly the kind of project which would play to Fraction and Allred. Apparently the new female character is called ‘Miss Thing’, which means she’ll likely become an instant fan-favourite amongst camp people. And can you even imagine how exciting the world is, now that we know Mike Allred is going to be drawing She-Hulk EVERY MONTH? These are golden times.

Over on the Fraction/Mark Bagley Fantastic Four title, it looks like Valeria and Franklin Richards are going to head back to their family for some cosmic adventuring, too. Fraction seems set on making this a big adventure series, with all six members of the Fantastic Four back together in the same book.

Now for the sad news. The article also confirms that Fraction’s Defenders – which had a massive decline in sales figures – will be concluding with issue #12 in November. From one She-Hulk to another, and one team to two teams. Sad to see the book go, but it’ll be interesting to see what this means for Marvel’s lineup next year. Will Dr Strange or Iron Fist show up somewhere else, now? Is this the last time we’ll get to see a Defenders title?

5. DOOPDATE: Doop Returns for an All-Doop issue of Wolverine & The X-Men in September

By Steve Morris

Neverendingly working Newsarama blogger Graeme McMillan has spotted a change in Marvel’s solicitations. Now, this may have come about as a result of a delay in art, or it may have come about because we exist in a cosmic tapestry, stitched and unstitched by the tapestrier, as may be their will or wont. But basically, issue #17 of Wolverine & The X-Men is going to kick aside the worthless cud like this ‘Wolverine’ feller out the way, in favour of an ALL-DOOP issue. Yes!

Doop, if you’ll recall, was created by Peter Milligan and Mike Allred during their run on X-Force/X-Statix, and is an all-knowing doopish green blob of infinity. He’s most recently been seen as part of Jason Aaron’s Wolverine-as-a-teacher series, in his new role as religious studies tutor:

All very well and good, I suppose. But what makes this news a bolt of blob-based brilliance is the surprise reveal that this issue will be drawn by co-creator Mike Allred. Grab your pom-poms, people. MIKE! ALLRED! Returns to Doop!

The issue will be released towards the end of September. Let’s celebrate by remembering the time Doop destroyed that jerk Thor.

6. Fraction, Bagley and Allred are on the Fantastic Four

The final teaser image for Marvel’s week of NOW! has gone up on the USA Today’s website, revealing that Matt Fraction will be writing a relaunch of both Fantastic Four and the FF. Joining him will be Mark Bagley and Mike Allred.

1343999249 Fraction, Bagley and Allred are on the Fantastic Four

Bagley will draw the Fantastic Four series while Mike Allred will draw FF, which follows the ‘Future Foundation’ school set up by Reed Richards during Jonathan Hickman’s soon-concluding run with the team. MIKE! ALLRED! Dunno about you, but I always feel a compulsion to shout his name out like a cheerleader and wave my pom-poms.

This will be slightly worrying for fans of Bagley’s Icon series ‘Brilliant’, as there’s no word yet on if this announcement will affect the shipping of the book/mean the book has been cancelled. It does mean, however, that Marvel aren’t going to rename the team ’The Uncanny Fantastic Four’ or ‘FF Avengers’. So there’s another trend bucked by the First Family of Comics!

The teaser image above only relates to FF, I know. USA Today say they have the second one, so we’re just going to have to trust them until they decide to actually put it online. You wouldn’t have had this delay if you’d just sent the image to us, Marvel!

This means we now have confirmation for Uncanny Avengers, New Avengers, Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four, FF, Thor, Deadpool, and All-New X-Men as part of Marvel NOW! That’s half the books, with another half yet to be announced. Anyone for a solo PIXIE series? Time to make some noise if there is! Let’s lead a charge! Get your pom-poms out.

7. Nice art: Mike Allred draws Daredevil #17

1 0ce46ce1f4 Nice art: Mike Allred draws Daredevil #17
DAREDEVIL continues to be the superhero book that proves that “nice art” can be better than “house style” as Mike Allred takes over for an issue. Mark Waid continues to write.

Allred takes over for regular artist Chris Samnee and teams with writer Mark Waid for one issue, Daredevil issue 17, which comes out in August and will feature Allred’s distinctive pop-art style.
The issue will be a part of “the ongoing Daredevil soap opera,” editor Stephen Wacker says, but also stand on its own. “It’s part madcap, but also a very personal story
