2. Chewing a Bone with Tom Watson’s Stick Dog

Today, Kid Lit Reviews went venturing to a star’s home. Not sure where to go, or who would oblige, I found myself outside a large pipe under Highway 16, trying to make good use of a Map to the Homes of Kidlit Stars. It cost me 5 bucks and I was beginning to think I’d been scammed. …

4. Partridge in a Pear Tree Patterns

I painted this watercolour Partridge in a Pear Tree illustration almost a year ago, blogged here. As the festive season is almost upon us once more, I pulled it out of the 'archives' to create some patterns that I'll place on fabric, gift wrap, tea towels, cards, etc ... though it's taking me some time due to the slow internet connection out here in my temporary 'digs'.

Here are the 3 pattern variations:

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-1-by-Floating-Lemons

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-2-by-Floating-Lemons

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-3-by-Floating-Lemons

I then had to figure out a simple coordinating background pattern, and as I love stripes ...

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-1-stripes-by-Floating-Lemons

Partridge-in-a-Pear-Tree-2-stripes-by-Floating-Lemons

Those stripes could be a tad paler, perhaps? Still, a sweet pattern for Christmas nonetheless? I'm also going to take the partridge off and keep just the pear tree as an all-year-round pattern, I've decided. I like it.

I wish all of you a sweet, colourful, delightful week. If you feel like getting some Christmas shopping done early and are curious as to how the Partridge in a Pear Tree illustration looks on some lovely home wares and gifts, I have the non-stripey ones up already over at Society6, so just click HERE to take a peek. Or HERE for the patterned version. I'll be blogging the cards and gift-wrap papers over at my Floating Lemons Treats blog this coming week. Cheers.

5. Pattern Design: Pop Flowers Collection

I'm still working on different colourways for my Into the Woods collection, but meanwhile, here's another new mini-collection that I've designed for spring and summer. It's wonderfully bright and cheerful, with lots of flowers that pop, and coordinating little florettes (well, that's what I call them) and stripes of curvy leaves ... wonderful for outdoor parties and get-togethers in the sunshine.

I've already placed in onto tons of lovely goodies for the home, kitchen, and on gift boxes and matching cards and wrapping paper. Click here for a peek at a Pop Flowers table setting, and on the links below to pop over to the stores where it's on a whole range of sweet products:

10. Illustration Friday: Stripes

Cats will do anything to find a sunny spot.
This is a painting of my old cat Biff who graced my life for nearly seventeen years.
He had malnutrition and pneumonia and weighed 5 pounds when I adopted (stole) him from his neglectful owners.
He showed his gratitude for life every single day.

Meanwhile, I started my new job at the veterinary hospital on Tuesday. I have put in nearly 30 hours in 3 days which is why I've been so scarce, yet again.
It will take some time to get acclimated to these hours, but so far it's going well.
Everyone is nice and helpful, but best of all I get to hold puppies again and greet so many new fur friends!
Oh, and getting a paycheck again? Priceless!

I hope to visit you all soon. It looks like I've missed a million posts!

12. Leggings of All Stripes

No, I did not plan to sew up 2 pairs of leggings this weekend.   But I did and I’m wishing I had bought more knit fabric because this is my new addiction!

On Friday I got this bee in my bonnet that I needed to make striped leggings.  I’ve been on the hunt for these for a while, but have only been able to find cute ones for little girls or sheer ones (more like footless tights) for grown-ups.  Not sure why it hadn’t occurred to me until now that I could make them.  I guess I find sewing knit fabric very sketchy and I pretty much avoid it (even with a copy of Built by Wendy Sew U Home Stretch sitting on my bookshelf for a year or so).  But I remembered seeing that Angry Chicken posted a tutorial on her blog so I figured I’d give it a shot.   Plus my newish serger has been neglected. (Out of sheer laziness I don’t even bring it out to finish seams though that’s why I bought it in the first place.)

I bought not 1 but 2 stripey knits; I can’t help myself when it comes to fabric (you know that).  Luckily I had some “pajama” elastic and kraft paper (for the pattern) in my stash because I didn’t think about checking if I had these things before I drove off to the fabric store like a addict desperate for her next fix.

I probably followed Amy’s tutorial about 90% (or more, I kind of got started before I finished watching the video).  These were crazy easy to make.  In fact, after I finished my first pair (the red ones), I put them on and was wearing them while I made the second!

Here’s a detail picture of the red fabric in case the first one “strobes” a bit (an optical illusion where a pattern may look animated and wiggly).  I like to scrunch up my leggings just below my knees.  Here you can see even the leg openings are serged.  Easy peasy (once you get the tension right, that is).    For the pink pair I added some narrow stretch lace to girl-ify it up a bit (because pink is not girlie enough).  I’m debating whether or not I should trim the ties though – maybe they’re too much?  Maybe they’d look better shorter and tied simply in a square not?

I wouldn’t say I was anxious for spring (especially since it has been in the 80s this weekend) but I’m ready.  I’ll just pair these with short, simple frocks and I’m good to go.

Have any of you started on any spring projects yet?  (Or if you are looking towards fall, what about you?  Stripey leggings are good for any time of year.  Just saying.)

Do you ever have one of those weeks where some stupid thing just seems to take over and muck up everything? Yes? Well, my stupid thing this past week has been the dreaded vacuum cleaner.

It went something like this, over the span of several days:
"Hmmm, its not picking up, it must be clogged." Take apart, clean out icky gunk and dirt, put back together.
Use vacuum, its still not picking up, have a fit involving bad words and a good deal of stomping around, figure I need to buy a new one.
Put dead vacuum in corner and forget about it for a day or two.
Dead vacuum is getting on my nerves and the rugs are getting funky, so instead of going to buy a new one, I think "thrifty" and decide to go buy new filters for it instead.
Pay a whopping $35 for 3 new filters at the store with the nice vacuum cleaner man, but figure that's better than buying a new one.
Let vacuum sit another day because I can't deal with it yet.
Rugs are getting scary, I decide to put the filters in and get on with it.
Turn on vacuum with new clean filters fully expecting it to act like new again, but IT STILL WON'T PICK UP.
Have another fit, worse than the first one. Not pretty.
Take vacuum apart AGAIN. Clean out more dirt, clean roller, figure it has to work now, or else.
Doesn't work. Not only won't pick up, but there's a distinct burning smell now.
Open doors to air out icky icky burning smell. Call vacuum man. Vacuum man says "bring it in, I'll look at it." "How much is that going to cost, should I just buy a new one?" "I won't charge you anything to look at it."
Lug vacuum to vacuum man's shop. Vacuum man takes off the bottom and finds a broken rubber band thingie (hence the burning smell) and also an embarrassing mass of gunky dirt, the kind you only find in a vacuum, in a place that I hadn't even thought to look.
$10.38 and about 20 minutes later I was on my way back home with a hopefully functioning vacuum.
And today I finally mustered up the courage to give it a go, and praise the lord it worked.

I don't know that there's any lesson in there, I just had to vent.

And somehow in between all the fits and aborted vacuuming sessions and all, I managed to get a couple of pieces of art done.

~~~~~~~~~
This first one is another in my new series which doesn't have a name yet. "Stripes" seems lame. "Diversity" is sort of the theme, but I don't want to call them that. I'll think of something.
5 x 7 on illustration board with Polychromos and Prismacolors.
The palette in this one is so subtle. I started with greys, both Polys and Prismas. Then I added grey green, and a little something else here and there, and just kept going. Its inspiration is the climate ~ both literally, and figuratively speaking. Its Winter, but also a little gloomy over all with the economy and all. I guess this is the mood I'm in, sort of. I did put in some green and red, which allude to life and prosperity, even though they're a bit muted.
This will probably go up for sale when I get my new "art for sale" blog up and running. I'm tinkering with it, and have managed to figure out the 3 column thing ~ I'm so impressed with myself!
~~~~~~~~~~
And this is an assignment I just finished. I blocked out the signage on the building to protect the innocent.
The challenge in this was to eliminate all the snow (which completely covered the landscaping and made it impossible for me to tell what's really happening there) and try to show it with a little green. I thought I was very clever coming up with the empty grass area, just outlined in green. It makes a nice design I think, drawing more attention to the building, and also got me off the hook trying to invent "growies" that aren't really there.

This weekend is going to be a major "find and sort" couple of days. I have art safely packed away that needs to come out and be sold (and apologies to those of you reading this who've asked me about art you're interested in...I'm getting to it, please bear with me). I have art in filing cabinets, in IKEA flat files, in portfolios, in other portfolios, in big packing boxes intended for mirrors or paintings. You get the idea. Little pieces, big pieces, in between pieces. In my dreams I have a Martha Stewartized filing system that's perfect, where all the art is labeled, wrapped, and has its own little drawer or special place, and its all easy to find. HA
Well, I said it was in my dreams.
Wish me luck.

15. 58: Christmas Gift

58christmasgift

I love gift boxes and lovely wrappings. When I was younger I was the designated family gift-wrapper. I suspect that it was more because the rest were far too lazy to do it than any particularly excellent skills on my part, but I loved the whole wrapping process ... Apparently I also drove the family nuts as I would also takes AGES to unwrap my own gifts. Didn't want to spoil the gorgeous papers so I'd take the sticky tape (sellotape to some of you out there) off slooooowly and precisely. heh.

I'm still flooded by too many things to do at the moment! What with getting everything ready for the new home (a never-ending process it seems) and an exciting new project which I'm working on with strict deadlines ... I've been ignoring my daily drawings, online stores and visits to the artists on the net :( So I decided to take some time off today and post a quick drawing I did yesterday, AND pop over to some of your sites for inspiration. See you there!!

16. Red Stripes #2

6 x 6, gouache on bristol

I know, this looks suspiciously like the first one. But its different, trust me.
I did use the same palette and same paper, but its a whole new piece.
I just love how those reds all interact with each other.

Next time I'll try a different color scheme. Maybe something Fall-ish.
