1. Wondering about Wandering WonderCon

__________________________________________________________________________

wchdr r1 c1 Wondering about Wandering WonderCon

Well, WonderCon’s continued presence in San Francisco remains in doubt, as seen here, and mentioned here back in March, as the Moscone Center gives WonderCon the Cinderella treatment.  What’s in store for WonderCon, and what are their options?

As in 2012, WonderCon will once again take place in Anaheim, scheduled for March 29-31, 2013, which also is Easter weekend.

WonderCon, originally held at the Oakland, California, Convention Center, moved to the Moscone Center in San Francisco in 2003.

In 2012, Moscone was under renovation, making space a premium.  In 2013, that renovation should be complete.  So what’s happening in April, 2013, at Moscone?

Dates Event Name Location Type
April 2013
04/02/13 – 04/04/13 MRS 2013 Spring Meeting Moscone West Convention / Tradeshow
04/09/13 – 04/09/13 ad:tech Moscone West Convention / Tradeshow
04/11/13 – 04/13/13 American College of Physicians Moscone North and South Convention
04/15/13 – 04/17/13 AACRAO 99th Annual Meeting Moscone West Convention / Tradeshow
04/20/13 – 04/22/13 2013 AACC Annual Convention Moscone West Levels 1-3 Convention / Tradeshow
04/20/13 – 04/24/13 Cataract and Refractive Surgery Moscone North and South Convention / Tradeshow
04/28/13 – 05/01/13 SAS Users’ Group International Moscone West Convention / Tradeshow

Moscone West cannot accommodate a weekend show, as the midweek shows require at least one day of moving out and moving in.

Moscone North/South?  It could host WC the weekend of the 6th and 7th, or the 27th and 28th.

But Moscone can host whomever they wish.  As a public venue, they are susceptible to public pressure, so perhaps a grassroots effort could be made to convince the village elders to accommodate a local cultural event.  Perhaps Jerry Sanders could call Edwin M. Lee and clue him in to the amount of money being lost to Anaheim.

So, in 2013, WonderCon will once again take place at the Anaheim Convention Center to the east of Los Angeles.

Here’s the plan of the convention center:

Anaheim LEVEL1RG 1024x431 Wondering about Wandering WonderCon

Last year, WonderCon used Hall D for exhibition space.  (Here’s the exhibitor map.)  That’s 221,284 square feet.  It’s a huge building, with over 813,000 square feet of exhibition space (Halls A-E).  Moscone has 538,000 sq.ft. of exhibition space; San Diego, 525,701 sq.ft.

In 2011, WonderCon used Halls A-C of Moscone South for the dealer’s room.  That’s 260,560 square feet of space.  2010 had the same footprint; in 2009 it was Halls B & C.

——————-

So, if Moscone disowns WonderCon like a single mother tossed out into a snowstorm, where could they relocate to?

Well, there is Anaheim, which will have hosted two shows.  Comic-Con International has filed to claim “Anaheim Comic-Con” as a trademark.  (They have also filed for “Los Angeles Comic-Con” and “San Francisco Comic-Con”.)  There is a lot of space to expand, both in the Arena which can host “Hall H” media events, as well as a large ballroom on the Third Floor.

I attended the annual conference of the American Library Association here last June.  There are numerous hotels around the area, mostly due to Disneyland.  I had no trouble finding an affordable hotel room, and though the trek was a bit long, the weather was pleasant.  There was no “fighting” with Disneyland tourists for hotel rooms or restaurants.  The convention center was easy to navigate, both horizontally and vertically.  The length of the center was not weary to walk, even on the last day of the show.  I especially liked the outdoor courtyards built between each hall.  There were 20,000 attendees, yet it wasn’t difficult to walk between hallways. (Of course, surf the web for reaction to last year’s WonderCon in Anaheim.)

But, where else could it go?  Some local fans are criticial of Comic-Con International moving out of the Bay Area, wondering why they do not move the show to another regional venue.

What exists?

oakland groundfloor 200x116 Wondering about Wandering WonderConFirst, there’s the Oakland Convention Center, which originally hosted the show from 1987-2002.

It has 48,000 square feet of exhibition space.  That’s one-fifth of what WonderCon used in 2011.  There’s also not a lot of space for programming.

McEnery Convention Center San Jose California Map.mediumthumb.pdf 200x258 Wondering about Wandering WonderCon

San Jose?  Located on the south side of the San Francisco Bay, it once hosted CCI’s Alternative Press Expo at Parkside Hall before it was moved to the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco.

The San Jose Convention Center has 143,000 square feet.  54% of WC ‘11.

Santa Clara?  112,775 sq.ft.

——————-

dragon con 2012 Wondering about Wandering WonderConNow, what if WonderCon went back to its fan-based heritage, and followed the hotel-centric layout of Dragon*Con?

What’s that?  A major regional convention which doesn’t use a convention center?  YUP!  Dragon*Con is a science-fiction convention which has grown to epic proportions!  They embrace almost every fandom, and like smaller conventions, rent conference space in various hotels, decentralizing everything.  Exhibitors and dealers are housed in three separate ballrooms.

Our host hotels for 2012 will again include the familiar surroundings of the Hyatt Regency Atlanta along with the legendary Atlanta Marriott Marquis, the Hilton Atlanta, Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, and the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel.

They sell out the hotels, usually a year in advance!  Which is what convention bureaus love!  46,000 fans attended in 2011, according to Wikipedia.

Could that happen in San Francisco?

WonderCon could use the Marriott Marquis, the Westin, and the Four Seasons for events (with the W and St. Regis for overflow), bypassing Moscone completely.  The three main hotels are all in the same block just north of Yerba Buena Gardens (and two blocks north of Moscone).

WonderCon had about 39,000 attendees in 2011 in San Francisco (the latest year I could find).  WonderCon is similar to Dragon*Con in scope and size, so let’s see what space D*C has available [click on the hotel name to go to the hotels' meeting space pages] :

The Grand (hotel) total: 379,200 approximate square feet.

Now, realize that Dragon*Con has three exhibition spaces:

  • Dealers (retailers) are in the Hyatt’s International Hall (9,150 sq.ft.)
  • Exhibitors (companies) are in the Marriott’s Marquis Ballroom (21,983 sq.ft.)  and the Imperial Ballroom (15,640 sq.ft.)

Now, what if we tried the same thing in San Francisco?

That’s a grand (motel) total of approximately 86,000 square feet, all on the same city block.

Add the nearby St. Regis (13.3K) and the W (7.4K) and the total is 107,000 square feet.  That’s a tight fit.  The Marriot Marquis could host the Exhibitors space, the Westin could host the dealers.  Meeting rooms might be a concern, although there are smaller boutique hotels with smaller (but not numerous) meeting rooms.  Of course, that all depends on the major exhibitors.  If Marvel, DC, Capcom, and/or Nintendo balk, then the show might suffer by their absence.  (Of course, fans could view it as WonderCon returning to their fan-based heritage, ignoring the hyperbole which fuels Comic-Con International: San Diego.)

——————-

But there’s another possibility, further north.  Sacramento.

Sacramento, the capital of California, has two major exhibition spaces:

  1. The Sacramento Convention Center
  2. Cal Expo

The Sacremento Convention Center has 134,006 sq.ft. of exhibition space, which is smaller than San Jose.  So that’s not worth the trouble of moving outside the Bay Area.

calExpoLogo Wondering about Wandering WonderConBut consider Cal Expo.  What’s that?  It’s the site of Big Fun, the California State Fair.

It has a complex of buildings which could be utilized for a large convention, turning it into a “comic-county fair”!

hannover messegelaende 200x198 Wondering about Wandering WonderConThink that’s crazy?  Consider CeBIT, held every year in Hannover, Germany.  Held at Hannover’s Messegelände (fairground), that electronics trade show uses 5 million square feet in 27 different halls and attracted 312,000 attendees in 2012 (850,000 during the dot-com boom).  CCI:SD caps attendance at 130,000.

So, what sort of space does Cal Expo offer?  Here’s the map of the fairgrounds.  Specifically, Buildings A, B, C, D, the Pavilion, the Cove, and the Expo Center.  The PDF of building specifics is here.

  • Building A 27,700 sq.ft., with 8,600 sq.ft. on the mezzanine.  [Connects with Building B]
  • Building B [identical to Building A]
  • Building C 28,000 sq.ft.  [column free, connects to Building D]
  • Building D 20,000 sq.ft.  [column free]
  • The Pavilion 98,000 sq.ft.
  • The Cove A shaded seating area, seats 4100, stage measures 48 x 40 ft.  (Think “Hall H”.)
  • Expo Center 58,870 sq.ft.  Eight buildings sharing an outdoor brick plaza.
  • #1 = 7,549 #2 = 5,987 #3 = 7,929 #4 = 7,860 #5 = 7,934 #6 = 7,832 #7 = 7,931 #8 = 5,848

That’s a grand total of 277,470 sq.ft. of space, larger than the 260,560 sq.ft. used in Moscone South.

The column free space of Building C and D would be perfect for the larger exhibitors.  Each Expo Center building could cater to a different fandom, grouping retailers together.  Or the Expo Center could be one big miss-mix-mashed bazaar, encouraging attendees to wander from one building to the next, and congregating in the middle.

Hotels?  There are many north of the fairground, so shuttle buses would be used, just like at every other comic con in the country.  Big Fun lists local transit options to downtown. Or, unlike most other shows, you can camp in your RV.  Parking?  15,000 spaces, $10 a car.

What about the weather?  According to Wikipedia, the average temperature in Sacramento for April is 47-72 degrees Fahrenheit.  San Francisco?  50-64 degrees.

Will people travel from San Francisco?  Well, to drive from Moscone to Anaheim takes 6 hours, 45 minutes.  From Moscone to Cal Expo?  1 hour, 35 minutes.  Lots of parking!

Big Fun 1024x496 Wondering about Wandering WonderConThe Big Fun Map.  The Golden1 stage is The Cove.

——————-

So, those are the most likely solutions for WonderCon.  I’m hoping that Moscone and CCI can come to some agreement, while Anaheim can become another great regional convention.

2. Crime Watch: Trailer full of Avatar comics and convention merch stolen

201203231214 Crime Watch: Trailer full of Avatar comics and convention merch stolen
Talk about a lousy break: The van containing all of Avatar’s merchandise from WonderCon that was going on to Emerald City Comicon was stolen from a comics shop parking lot:

In addition to convention display items like wire racks, large back-drop display and signage, loads of books are now gone.  Full cases of most of our most popular graphic novels like Neonomicon, Crossed, Freakangels, Night of the Living Dead, and Fevre Dream are gone.  Large quantities of World War Z, Zombie Survival Guide and books by author Max Brooks were in that trailer.  Some limited editions, created for the conventions, of Ferals #1, Crossed: Badlands #1 and Lady Death #14 and #15 are now much more limited as huge chunks of the entire production run are gone.

We are working with local law enforcement, but we could really use your eyes and ears on the ground.

Although they have more books at the warehouse, this would be a demoralizing blow for any company. If you have any more information, email Avatar at [email protected].

3. David Glanzer on what’s up with WonderCon and Comic-Con

201203221014 David Glanzer on whats up with WonderCon and Comic Con
[As shown by our lively comments thread on our previous whither WonderCon posts, people love guessing what's up with Comic-Con! Rather than guess, we sat down with CCI's VP of Marketing and Public Relations as the show was winding down on Sunday to find out where it will be next year, and what other changes in this year's Big Show we can expect.]

THE BEAT: Let’s get right to it: So what is happening with WonderCon? Where will it be next year?

GLANZER: I don’t think there are dates in this facility [Anaheim] for next year. Our plan was always to find a place where we could have WonderCon—or not have WonderCon. We toyed with the idea of taking it off the calendar but in the end we thought, we should try to keep it going. After looking around, the place that had dates closest to ours, and had exhibit space and, most importantly, had enough meeting space and hotel rooms, was Anaheim. They were able to gives us some dates and so we picked Anaheim.

But, I have to tell you, we could never just move an event down to experiment. If we were to do that we would just start an event—we wouldn’t have a Friday day. You don’t just come into a market and start as a three-day show. Fans aren’t ready to take a half-day off and so on. As it turned out, Friday was not bad, we were pretty surprised.

We hope to be in Moscone for 2013, but we haven’t got dates yet. But to be fair to Moscone, they typically don’t give us dates more than six months out. The problem with that obviously this year when you have this big hole in the calendar. So we’re hoping they give us dates sooner than later.

THE BEAT: I’ve heard the reason why Moscone won’t give dates is because there aren’t enough hotel rooms booked.

GLANZER: Yes, it’s very common.

THE BEAT: And understandable.

GLANZER: If you have an organization that comes in and books a ton of hotel rooms, and then you have a convention that comes in and books a minimal amount of hotel rooms, the idea is those who are spending more on hotels are going to spend more money across the board, organizations that have expense accounts, doctors, pharmaceuticals, tech conventions.

The issue with WonderCon is we sell out our room blocks and we’ll get another hotel, but SF has an abundance of mid range and low range hotels throughout the city and there’s no way to track that. So we keep telling them yes, we had nearly 50,000, people we sold out of room blocks but there’s no way to tell who is buying outside our hotel rooms.

We had the same problems with San Diego for a long time, but the convention center actually took a gamble on us [both laugh] and said, you know, we SEE the people here, maybe they don’t stay in hotel rooms, and there weren’t a lot of hotel rooms downtown back in the day. But as it turned out, it was a boom.

4. WonderCon Kibbles: Nerdist meets muppets, Adventure Time, Super Best Friends, etc. etc.

Nerdist has announced the line-up for the YouTube channel, with shows from Neil Patrick Harris, Ain’t It Cool News, Beat dream man Weird Al, Rob Zombie, Alison Haislip, to an audience of Muppets. If only all press conferences were this entertaining. The channel launches April 2.

ADVENTURE TIME ruled WonderCon as it rules all things, with some new promos for the upcoming season.

The much awaited “Super Best Friends” shorts, by Lauren Faust, debuted on the Saturday of the Show. DC Women Kicking Ass parsed it:

The plot was simple – Supergirl and Batgirl want Wonder Girl to “borrow” Wonder Woman’s invisible Jet. Lauren Faust has shown her ability to sketch female characters that are both broad and imbued with personal touches in her previous work. That’s she able to do it her in under two minutes is a testament to her talent. The piece begins with a wonderful moment of Donna Troy swearing an oath to her mother. And in about 5 seconds we find out that Wonder Girl’s mission is to join her “sister’s quest to ease suffering in the world of man”.  So much for the usual “Wonder Woman is so hard to explain” line.

ELSEWHERE, the LA Times looks at the edia juggernaut you probably never heard of: ‘Ben 10’: The Jeremy Lin of the superhero world?

Unless you have a young boy at home, it’s possible that Ben 10, the shape-shifting teen superhero, has flown completely under your radar. Unlike the other costumed heroes in the Cartoon Network stable — Batman, Green Lantern, Teen Titans — Ben 10 launched without an existing fan base or brand awareness, the Jeremy Lin of the superhero set. Just seven years after the animated series first aired on Cartoon Network, “Ben 10” is now the network’s top-selling franchise, setting ratings records and selling billions of dollars’ worth of show-related merchandise. At a time when studios struggle to relaunch and reboot long-running comic book properties, Ben 10 is the fir

5. WonderCon’s location in 2013 is still a big question mark

IMG 7839 WonderCons location in 2013 is still a big question mark
This year’s special Anaheim edition of WonderCon wrapped up as a success with larger than expected crowds, and generally strong sales. After a string of misfires, it was the best show in the SoCal market (aside from the big one, the San Diego Comic-Con) in quite some time.

However just where the 2013 edition of WonderCon will take place is still a “complete question mark” according to CCI’s David Glanzer. San Francisco’s Moscone Center cannot give them dates, and although the intention is to return to Northern California, obviously the show needs a home.

We’ll have more of Glanzer’s comments shortly, but the bottom line for now is that WonderCon simply doesn’t book enough hotel rooms through the official hotel booking channels to show that it brings in money to the local economy from out of towners and the like. Thus, it isn’t being given priority for show dates at this time.

The Anaheim show was certainly fun and served the local market — perhaps especially for people who had gotten shut out of San Diego badges just a few days before — so a return to this location wouldn’t be a disaster. But it isn’t the Bay Area, where WonderCon is a local tradition, either.

Another possible venue: nearby San Jose which has a good sized facility. However, according to Glanzer, there might not be enough hotels and amenities for a WonderCon sized fest there.

It’s ironic that after a year-long quest to settle The San Diego Comic-Con’s home, the folks running both shows are now faced with another location dilemma.

Although there were many people at the show having a good time, or simply watching the volleyball and cheerleading competitions taking place elsewhere in the facility, the sheer number of people definitely taxed the parking facilities and amenities. Parking was, simply, a nightmare, with people sitting in line for an hour getting off the freeway only to find the parking lot they were headed for had closed an hour ago. Lines at the mere handful of concessions servicing three large shows — both the volleyball and cheerleading events included lots of kids and their parents — also tried the patience of many.

Still, this edition of WonderCon has proven you can run a full scale convention in the LA/Orange County area and succeed.

No attendance has been announced yet for this year’s WonderCon.

6. Wondercon: Brian Wood’s X-Trip and Dark Avengers

By Todd Allen

Brian Wood used to be known as a Vertigo writer.  Axel Alonso used to be known as a Vertigo editor.  When Wood’s time at Vertigo ended, did you think Brian and Axel might have a chat?  Maybe.

Wood is about to do something a little unusual.  As of June, he will be the ongoing writer of both X-Men (#30) and Ultimate Comics X-Men (#13).  What they said in Ghostbusters about not crossing the streams?  Well, he just crossed them.  David Lopez will provide the art for X-Men and Paco Medina will provide the art for Ultimate Comics X-Men. Can we now agree that Wood landed on his feet?

Also in June, Thunderbolts changes its title to “The All New Dark Avengers” with issue #175.  The creative team is still Jeff Parker, Declan Shalvey & Kev Walker, but now Luke Cage is in charge of the recently incarcerated “Dark Avengers” squad and we’ll see what his level of compassion is for a group that tried to snuff him out in the recent past.

Finally, Dale Eaglesham is joining Jeff Parker as the new artist on Hulk.  The new story arc will involve the return of the Mayan gods (hey, its 2012) and the Red Hulk will have A-Bomb, Alpha Flight, Machine Man and the She-Hulks in tow.

Some art?  Funny you should ask about that…

Being announced at Wondercon right now: what’s going on with Avengers Academy and the Avengers Vs. X-Men Event.

Avengers Academy #31 concerns a certain Mr. Sebastion Shaw showing up at the Academy.  Avengers Academy #32 concerns the fate of the Sentinel at the Academy.  (You may recall that the X-Men don’t much care for Sentinels.)  Both of those issues will be shipping in June as part of Marvel’s new push to get more issues of various titles published in a given month.

Regular writer Christos Gage is joined for these issues by artists Tom Grummett and Timothy Green II.

Art?  Yes, we have some covers.

IMG 7853 Rain over WonderCon
It’s a rare day in SoCal with high wind and rain lashing the area around WonderCon.

Which is not good, because apparently the Anaheim Convention Center leaks.

Exhibitors yesterday were offered plastic sheets to cover their tables in the event of leaking.

We’ve yet to see the damage at the hall. Developing.

9. Wondercon Announcements: Spider-Man and Punisher

By Todd Allen

Spinning out of the Spider-Man panel at Wondercon, we have two announcements: the next Spidey arc (and villain) and a Punisher mini-series that’s a bit different from the monthly.

First up, the next arc in Amazing Spider-Man will be called “Spider-Man: No Going Back.”  It starts in Amazing Spider-Man #688 (June) and concerns the return of the Lizard and what everybody’s favorite mammal-hater has been working on in the background, the last few months.  Michael Morbius (of Living Vampire fame) will also be turning up and… it just never goes smoothly when someone’s trying to cure Curt Connors of his Lizard affliction, does it?

Giuseppe Camuncoli is the artist joining regular Spidey scribe Dan Slott for the arc.

Next up, we have the July premiere of Space: Punisher, a 4-issue mini-series where Frank Castle makes his mission of vengeance more inclusive – Punishment: It’s not just for Earthlings any more, so to speak.

The mini-series will be written by Frank Tieri and illustrated by Mark Texeira.  Texeira hasn’t done a lot of interior art in recent years and it’s nice to see him back in the fold.

You probably would like to see some art?
