1. Great Love from Generation to Generation

It has been a thoroughly busy time since arriving back home from the latest trip away working on new manuscripts and proofing ones to come out as well as doing a few school holiday things like going to the movies. Then of course there is the task of catching up on emails and other business from being away! But now, we are nearly on top of it all.

I do though want to drop in this image that is rather special.
While I was in Hong Kong I visited Po Leung Kok 1984 College as part of my festival schedule. At the end of my presentation, which was on all the different sorts of writing that I do (I also had the students rocking and grooving and waving hands to a few pieces of music too) I was presented with this framed piece of calligraphy. This was crafted by the students for me and is such a beautiful piece of work. The characters say Great Love from Generation to Generation. Getting goosebumps? I do!

My knowledge of Chinese script is next to nothing (alas) so thankfully they also attached this wording on the back:

This is so wonderfully special. Each time I look at it - and it sits very prominently in our loungeroom for the moment - I am just thrilled. This is exactly what the books were about ... giving a voice to the Chinese immigrants who came to Australia and did so much to make this such a glorious country. I am so delighted that the students were able to hear this voice as they read my books and that they feel closely attached to what I wrote. What a privilege.

I told them that I would have this on display in my house ... and it is! It will eventually make it into my office! Thank you to the students of Class 3E - you made this author feel so very special!

2. Hong Kong Day 2

Day 2 began after a really, really restful sleep here at the Harbour Grand at North Point, a bed that was large and smooth and soft, and then a scrumptious hotel breakfast.

Thanks to Sam (festival volunteer) for meeting us and delivering us safely to the Central Library. We have never been to the library in all the trips here so it was a thrill to do so this time ... although I didn't really get to look inside the library. This morning was spent in the auditorium for my Meet the Author talk. This morning's session was much about being a writer for digital creations as well books in the traditional form. What a wonderful time and the students asked some really great questions about digital work. It took a bit of work but eventually the questions started flowing.

Library session done then it was back to the hotel to gather my thoughts before a drive out to the New Territor

3. Hello Hong Kong Day 1

Are you ready for more travelling adventures showing the sights, sounds and foods of the latest trip?

Late Tuesday afternoon it was time to jet off to attend the inaugural Hong Kong International Young Readers Festival  and it was a lovely surprise to see my quote about attending the festival in the printed booklet. But first the Australian books had to be packed, along with a few bits of Australiana. This time there are three bags travelling with us. Luckily I have an allowance that will cover some of the extra luggage.

Food on board was a little erratic - very nice but at rather odd hours so we didn't know whether we were having lunch or supper .. and right now, as I write this up at the end of the first night here Bini is watching television and what is one the TV ... the Gruen Transfer ... where are we!

lunch at 5pm!

It is lovely and so very exciting being back in Hong Kong ... and then we arrived at our hotel, the Y-Loft which wasn't quite what we expected. The twin hard beds are in a very small room ... (and not Hong Kong hard either), no bounce, no spring - oh my poor back! as Bini said it would be nice as a teenager but ....

... and tonight as I write this we are in another hotel w

4. Back on Track - catch up 1

It has NOT been a quiet week since getting back home. Of course I added the previous Creative Spaces post from my lovely friend Katie Davis for her blog tour. That was heaps of fun. And in case you didn't hear me you might want to visit Katie's podcast where she spoke to all of us who were part of her tour, about something memorable to do with book launches. I am up early on the podcast and reflected on a launch with one of my pythons.

But now to catch up:
Last Saturday was Kids Day Out at Glebe Library - their first event for 2012 National Year of Reading, for which I am one of the National Ambassadors. I spent a delighful few hours at the library, first opening the days' programme and then later conducting a SOUNDS SPOOKY reading session. It was really a joy (I lurve reading my own book) and while I was reading Sounds Spooky I noticed a very young bub cradled by her mum quite close to where I was sitting on the floor. As anyone who has read the book knows, there is a part where there is a scream, so when it came time to scream I did screanmed very, very gently watching out of the corner of my eye the mum nad bub. BUT my gentle scream wan't quiet enough ... and they both jumped which was followed by quite a few giggles! I would love to add a photo here of the gathering masses but as I was presenting and my camera swas still tucked in the bag ... there is none to show.

2012 National Year of Reading has begun ... well sort of. The official kick off is next Tuesday in Canberra (ACT) at the National Library of Australia and I will be zapping on down for the day! As National Ambassador already I have been at the Glebe library Kids Day out and written a few articles and blog posts. I feel very privileged and thrilled to be one of the National Ambassadors.
