Transworld and Random House Australia have acquired debut novel The Light Between Oceans by M L Stedman, winning a nine-way auction for the title.

Doubleday editorial director Jane Lawson bought UK and Commonwealth rights jointly with Beverley Cousins at RHA through Susan Armstrong at Conville and Walsh, with auctions ongoing in the US and Europe. Transworld plans to publish as a Doubleday hardback in 2012.

Editor Phyllis Grann will retire from her position at Doubleday. In a letter written by editor-in-chief Sonny Mehta, he praised Grann “as a brilliant editor and savvy businesswoman.”

Grann has worked in publishing for four decades. Prior to Doubleday, she held editorial positions at William Morrow, Simon & Schuster, and Penguin Group (USA). She has worked with several celebrated authors including Tom Clancy, Judy Blume, and Patricia Cornwell.

Grann explained: “Doubleday has allowed me to continue doing what I love. And as much as I have enjoyed the work, I now feel it is time to step back.” Following her last day on June 9th, she will be available as a consultant and freelance editor.

I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do, so I just unwrapped it and took a bite.  It was a homemade ham-and-cheese-and-mustard sandwich, on white bread, with a thin piece of lettuce in the middle.  Not bad, in the food part. While the idea behind the book is intriguing, it is the execution that really drew me in.  The book is told from Rose's point of view and the story begins when Rose is 9 years old.  She tells us the comfort that she gets when she returns home from school and finds her mother in the kitchen.  Her mother bakes as special treat while Rose does her homework -- and Rose's sense of well being is palpable.
