1. Berkley and New American Library Converge in New Publishing Group

berkleyPenguin Publishing Group (PPG) has created the Berkley Publishing Group within PPG, which will be made up of all the Berkley and New American Library (NAL) imprints.

Leslie Gelbman, president, Berkley Publishing Group, will lead the new group. Kara Welsh has been promoted to senior vice president and publisher of the group and Claire Zion has been promoted to vice president and editor in chief. Tom Colgan and Cindy Hwang have both been promoted to vice president and editorial directors of the group. Here is more about the new group from a memo that Gelbman sent to staffers:

On July 1st, we will bring together what have to this point been separate editorial, managing editorial, production and art departments, aligning all areas of our publishing program under a new banner, the Berkley Publishing Group. Berkley and NAL already share marketing, publicity, and advertising teams, a structure which has provided agility as we navigate the ever-evolving marketplace. By unifying all departments, we will be even stronger going forward. I am confident these changes highlight our core strengths and firmly position us to provide the best possible forward-thinking, unwavering support and focus for our books and authors.

2. Lisa Gardner Jumps To Dutton

Thriller novelist Lisa Gardner will publish her next three novels at Penguin’s Dutton division, leaving her old home at Random House.

Her next novel will come out in winter 2012, a novel with the tentative title, Catch Me. Meg Ruley from the Jane Rotrosen Agency negotiated the deal with executive editor Ben Sevier. Mass market president Leslie Gelbman NAL publisher Kara Welsh will handle the paperback release. Last year we wrote about Gardner’s three-year revision.

Tart had this statement, in the release: “Few authors’ sales are growing like Lisa Gardner’s, and I am thrilled to help her grow even more. Dutton’s publicity and marketing under the direction of Christine Ball brings a great deal of sophistication to positioning and publishing suspense thrillers, and we look forward to the challenge of introducing Lisa’s books to the widest possible readership.”
