Sam Bosma is an artist working in Maryland as an illustrator and teacher. His editorial illustrations are composed using the same narrative visual-language of comics and film. The sketches for an illustration published in the Wall Street Journal below reveal his process of working with an art director to identify the strongest composition of characters and scenery and the peak dramatic moment to capture in the final illustration. These are the same concerns of every visual story teller.

Sam is a prolific artist and outside of his commercial illustrations he produces loads of characters and creatures in sketchbooks and comics. Here is a fan art drawing of San, from Sam’s “favorite movie,” Princess Mononoke:

Happy Halloween from Cloudy Collection! It’s a big week for us: we’ve just launched Hanging with the Dead (a 5”x7” letterpress edition), we put it onto a brand new website, and this Friday, we’re going to look at this new set, plus another new set, and all ten of the earlier editions on the walls of Pink Hobo Gallery in Minneapolis. That’s about 100 prints by 80 different artists from around the world!

Thank you all for helping make the project such a huge success! And remember: wash the zombie guts off your hands before handling your new print set.

I’m working on a bunch of little characters for a magazine article. I could draw hipsters all goddamn day.

After looking at a lot of uninspired comics art everywhere, we needed to cleanse our palate and seek out some things which are pleasing to the eye. Like Sam Bosma, an incredibly talented illustrator whose stunning work you can see at his blog. We could spend hours reveling in Bosma’s sharp angles and lush colors, but for now we’ll link to his illustrations for The Hobbit.

We’ve seen a lot of Hobbit art in our day, but these are as fresh and immediate as anything we’ve ever seen.

He also does comics, hint hint, which have been seen in POPGUN volume 3, and THE ANTHOLOGY PROJECT, volume 2.
