The New York Public Library (NYPL) has unveiled its list of “Top Book Check Outs of 2015.” Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult has claimed the top spot.
Some of the titles include The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee, and Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. The organization has also revealed six additional lists such as “Top 10 Books in Manhattan,” “Top 10 Books in Staten Island,” and “Top Books by Branch in the Bronx.”
Here’s more from the press release: “Individual branches saw a wide variety of books checked out the most, from Henry A. Clumpton’s The Art of Intelligence Lessons from a Life in the CIA’s Clandestine Service at City Island Library in the Bronx, to Prodigal Son by Danielle Steel at South Beach Library in Staten Island…Over 20 million items, including books, are circulated throughout the NYPL system each year. Opportunities to check out items will be even greater in 2016, when hours expand at branches across the system thanks to a $43 million city funding increase for New York’s three public library systems: NYPL, Brooklyn Public Library, and Queens Library.”

In the last two months, I’ve read three books with the word girl in the title. In December I read Gone Girl, in January I read The Girl on the Train and I just finished reading The Girl in the Photograph by Kate Riordan. I started to wonder if this was a recent trend in book titles, but […]
The Gone Girl film adaptation has enjoyed great popularity and earned more than $366 million at the box office. Gillian Flynn fans will feel riled up again thanks to a hilarious \"Honest Trailer\" thanks to the team behind the ScreenJunkies YouTube channel.

An Amazing Amy spin-off story will be printed. MTV.com reports that this 36-page children’s book, entitled Tattle Tale, will be included in the package for the Gone Girl movie blu-ray.
In both the original novel and the movie, Amy Elliott-Dunne’s psychologist parents co-write the Amazing Amy series with a titular character who is modeled after their own daughter. Artist Kirk Van Wormer created the illustrations for Tattle Tale.
Author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn recently revealed that she is open to creating a sequel for the Gone Girl film adaptation. In an interview with the The New York Daily News, Flynn explained that a follow-up project could examine “what those crazy Dunnes are up to a few years down the road and if they got on — not well I don’t think.”
For Flynn, her one stipulation for such an endeavor would be to have David Fincher return as the director, Ben Affleck to continue playing Nick Dunne, and Rosamund Pike to come back as Amy Elliott-Dunne. Do you have any predictions on how the Dunnes’ story will evolve in the future?

BookVibe has examined 80 million Twitter posts from the past 12 months. Quartz reports that the data shows that the most popular book on the Twittersphere is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
Green’s hit young adult novel was mentioned in 1.2 million tweets. The books that made it onto the top 10 list are a mix of recently published hit titles and classic icons of literature; several of them have inspired highly successful film adaptations.
According to the article, “recent research suggests that film adaptations of books have the ability to influence people to read, so while critics may bemoan the latest adaptation of a book for the silver screen, the halo effect does increase the book’s readership which, at the end of it all, is exactly what the author wants.” Below, we’ve featured the full top 10 list—what do you think?

Novelist Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) seems to be the headliner in the gala 200th issues of Dark Horse Presents. This groundbreaking anthology has introduced a ton of great comics to the world—a couple of little comics called Sin City and Concrete— and it was also the very first Dark Horse publication. To celebrate, the 200th issue has a stellar line up and a HELLBOY cover by Gabriel Bá, an APE-X variant cover by THE GOON creator Eric Powell and more including the US publication of a comic Flynn and Dave Gibbons originally commissioned for the Guardian in the UK.
The 80-page 200th issue of the multiple Eisner and Harvey Award series will feature:
• Mike Mignola and Gabriel Bá revisiting Hellboy’s time in Mexico with a follow-up to their classic story THE COFFIN MAN.
• Fred Van Lente and Miguel Sepulveda delivering a Project Black Sky story about the telepathic cyborg gorilla Ape-X
• Brendan McCarthy’s DREAM GANG
• Damon Gentry and Aaron Conley’s SABERTOOTH SWORDSMAN
• The first chapter of a new GROO tale by Sergio Aragones and Mark Evanier
• A mermaid story by Gustavo Duarte (MONSTERS)
• Alex de Campi and Jerry Ordway’s SEMIAUTOMAGIC
• Ed Brisson’s MURDER BOOK featuring art from Michael Walsh
• The first ever U.S. publication of the short story MASKS, which was originally published in the UK’s GUARDIAN newspaper to commemorate the British Library’s exhibition of British comics. The story is the comic book debut for Gillian Flynn, the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling writer of GONE GIRL, which is now a major motion picture directed by David Fincher (FIGHT CLUB). She collaborates with artist Dave Gibbons, (WATCHMEN) for a story about mothers… and vigilantes.

61 authors and 14 artists have made annotations to some of their most beloved works for the First Editions/Second Thoughts (FEST) auction. The funds from this venture will benefit the PEN American Center.
The writers added in features to first edition copies of their books such as notes, essays, sketches, photos, and letters to the reader. The artists had a choice of re-making either a monograph or an important art piece.
All of the artwork and annotated books will be put on public display at Christie’s New York starting November 17th. The auction itself will take place on December 2nd.
The New York Times has an exclucisve video starring Robert A. Caro, Paul Auster, and Jane Smiley who talk about the experience of re-reading their own books (embedded above). Click here to watch another video for more details about the auction event.

Fun fact: Did you know that there are more libraries in America than there are McDonald’s restaurants?
We didn’t either, but thanks to this nifty infographic from H&R Block (of all places… but thanks for the share, ElectricLit), we now do.
What else do we learn? Well there’s the fun fact that Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In led other fiction and non-fiction titles for the most checked-out books of 2013, and that “every year, Americans spend nearly three times as much on candy as they do on public libraries.” (more…)
