Per The Wrap, the next Star Wars anthology film, the very film that just lost director Josh Trank, will focus on everyone’s favorite Mandalorian bounty hunter: Boba Fett.
While this year will see the release of the first in a series of new “Episodes” in the Star Wars saga in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with sequel entries every two years after into 2019; 2016 and 2018 will see “anthology” spin-offs allowing the Star Wars brain trust the opportunity to tell a number of stand-alone stories set in various parts of the series’ timeline.
2016’s Rogue One, which centers on the Rebels’ attempt to steal the plans for the Death Star, stars Felicity Jones and is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla). For the next entry, the focus will seemingly shift over to the world of bounty hunters and chart the rise of Fett, one of Star Wars’ most enduringly popular characters. Seriously, there’s tons of books and video games about the guy, and while it’s been a long while since I’ve watched all of the original trilogy, he didn’t exactly have a ton of screen-time. A cool look will take you far!
With Trank out of the picture, Kathleen Kennedy and her team will be on the hunt (no pun intended) for the newest filmmaker to take over this new entry. On the writing side, Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days of Future Past) has been closely involved with the development of this feature.

Okay, I know that the economics of the comics industry these days pretty much revolve around licensed properties and the vagaries of two multi-billion dollar media conglomerates, but The Beat seems to be quickly morphing into a film blog. I’m really, really sick of movie news and hearing about summer blockbusters and every last casting press release on every ticket selling business transaction from Disney and Warner Bros. Spin offs from Star Wars? Really? Yes, there are Star Wars comics, I know, I know. Yes, I don’t have to read it, I know, I know. I do think it’s worth asking what kind of show The Beat wants to be.
Really, if I wanted to know about the latest stock option feeder from Geek Explosion Chinese Market Studios International, Inc., I could go to a million other sites. Speaking for me alone, I like comics for all the ways they’re not mindless blockbusters. I regularly tell people that comics has what movies used to have – substantive stories made by people who can follow a vision through to their conclusion without worrying about investors and product placement. It’s kind of depressing to be constantly hammered on a decent comics blog with reminders of the extent to which comics is working furiously to turn itself into another corporate media profit center.
I’m not going to be a pest about it, but I needed to get that off my chest. Anyone listening? Anyone agree? Hello?
Allen: Nothing can match STAR WARS as click-bait, especially on a pop culture website. I can’t get excited about a “spinoff” movie that won’t be out until 2018 (at the earliest), and will probably bear no resemblance to what people think it will be.
