Welcome back to Upcoming Titles, our monthly feature where we highlight books releasing this month. As always, this is by no means a comprehensive list of forthcoming releases, just a compilation of titles we think our readers (and our contributors!) would enjoy.
Summer is in full swing and two of our PubCrawl contributors have books coming out this month, including our very own Jodi Meadows and Julie Eshbaugh! Julie’s debut will be coming out this month and we are so, so, so excited for her book to finally be out in the world!

French entertainment group Ankama announced today they’ve sold Titan Comics the publishing rights to their series Mutafukas for English-speaking countries. The Bande Dessinée tells the story of Angelino and his adventures in Dark Meat City following a scooter accident that leaves him with the ability to see strange entities doing dirty deeds all over town. The strip is the work of the graphic artist known as Run. Les Inrocks magazine called the illustrator a “postmodernist Virtuoso, Run is a bit like the Tarantino of comics, and MUTAFUKAZ is his Kill Bill.”
The series has reportedly sold over 100,000 copies in France, with the final issue scheduled for release this Fall. A full-length film from Studio 4C, the long running Japanese animation group who was responsible for the “Kid’s Story” segment of The Animatrix, has been in the works since 2011.
Check out some early preview pages of Mutafukaz below.

Summary : What if you discovered that everything you thought you knew about yourself was a lie?
Rylee is fifteen. She comes home from school one afternoon to find the most shocking thing possible - her father dead, with a knife through his heart, and a key clutched in his hand. Her mother's purse is on the counter, but she appears to be long gone. A message in blood is written on the floor... RUN.
With her brother in tow, Rylee begins a dark journey, one that will uncover horrific and chilling crimes and lead her to an unexpected and gruesome discovery about her real father and what - or who - is behind his insatiable desire to kill. By the journey's end Rylee's childhood is a long way behind her...
RUN is the first title in the new Vengeance series, following Rylee as she begins to piece together the story of her life and to avenge unpunished crimes - starting with her own. This is DEXTER with a feisty female protagonist unlike any other in contemporary young adult fiction.
Review: Rylee, having come home from school to find her father dead, her mother missing, and message that just says “RUN”, gets her brother and runs.
I was excited to read this because I’ve read bits of Olsen's Envy, and liked it, and the trailer that HKB made was quite good (music win).
It starts off very quickly, the set up from the summary happening in the first chapter, and the running happening in the second. This pace is kept up throughout, which was good, and I read this in one sitting.
The mystery as to what happened is quickly partially revealed in favour of a thriller story, which I didn't mind. I liked the fact that we get to meet lots of characters as Rylee tries to discover how things happened to others that fits into her current situation (not very well worded in comparison to the book, but I can't explain it better without spoilers), who each brought clues to the table. The way it developed was good, but the twist at the end was predictable.
The main reason I didn't enjoy this was Rylee. I don't know why I disliked her so much, but I just didn't care for her or her story or the way it turned out. Maybe it was her narration; there's some interjections and thoughts which are kind of obvious. Maybe it was her, she seems a little too conveniently prepared to know what to do, and I didn't think she developed. It was probably the romance; there's a short flashback and a facebook conversation with a guy in the middle of the book (and why are you even worrying about facebook when all this is happening?) and the ending just comes out of nowhere and the book could have easily done without it because it just seems like an afterthought that wasn’t properly explored.
Overall: Strength 2 tea to a turny fast thriller, that I didn’t get into as much as I’d hoped.
I have to say, these last three months have not been easy. I had to drink water, milk and other stuff besides my beloved soft drinks. What a serious “first world” problem. Right? And until I started writing this post, I was really proud of myself for giving up the soft drinks for three whole […]

Great goal! Right now, I’m pretty much committed to care-giving, but I *will* spread the word–and the blog. Don’t you just love how putting black marks down on paper lets us see our thoughts and know them, sometimes for the very first time? Yeah.

Donna, I DO understand. I recently did the same thing with drinks. I trought the artificial sugar was impeding my diet. I thought it wasn’t good for my kidneys. I thought the caffeine wasn’t Healthy. So I started drinking club soda and when I went back to have a diet Dr Pepper, it just didn’t taste as good. I’m so glad that I switched.
Digging wells for water sounds like a great idea. Please keep me posted on this project.

Hi, Donna!
Nice to see you again at the SCBWI conference this year!
What a great challenge for yourself. If I lived closer, I would definitely participate in the 5k as a runner. Will this be the first year ever for the racing event? Have you read the true story in a pb about Ryan from Canada who raised enough money to build a well in Africa? It’s awesome. My son, who is 9, is so impressed by Ryan’s actions and motivations.
Would you be willing and able to answer a few interview questions for my blog feature, High Five? I’d need the answers by Friday the 4th around 8pm at the latest. I can e-mail the questions to you in a Word.docx attachment. Just let me know.
Also, how do you go about becoming a speaker for a breakout session at SCBWI? I’m interested in doing that for probably 2015 (*maybe* 2014). You can e-mail me at wildbike @ netzero . com. Thanks!!!

Dear Donna,
Walking to help others, also helps you get fit. Celebrate you and your sense of humor and your compassion for others.

I was finally able to finish this one up last week. Overall, I don't hate it. Is it the best in the series? Naw. Is it the worst, Naw. It's decent, and decent is good enough for me at the moment.
It was sort of an uneventful weekend for me. The wife and I didn't really do much. I've had to take a bit of a break from writing the book in order to get some other stuff done, but hopefully I'll be able to get back to it sometime this week. I'm at a point (somewhere in the middle of the story) that has me a bit stumped. I know how the story is going to end, but I've written myself into a bit of a corner and I'm having trouble getting over a hump. I had hoped that taking some time away from it would help me sort things out in my head, but it really hasn't worked.
Not exactly the most well thought out plan, I know.
I saw a really good movie called "Son of Rambow" over the weekend. A really sweet little story, well directed, funny, had everything really. It didn't change my life or anything, but without a doubt it was a good flick.

So I was at the movie theater about a month ago and I saw on the marquis the sign for the coming attraction, "SON OF RAMBOW" and so I go up to the pimply-faced 16 year old working the concession stands and I say, "Excuse me... but seriously? Rambo has been around for like a million years and you guys can't spell it right?! Seriously?"
And he looked at me and rolled his eyes and didn't even respond... and so all this time I thought HE was the one who was a total idiot...
Over the past few months I had been contemplating changing my medium from pastel to digital. I love working in pastels because they have such vibrant colors that can really add to the beauty of art. I never thought that I would switch away from them. I started to realize that the pros of working on the computer might outweigh the cons. I can work much faster digitally, I can work anywhere, and it
How fun!Your IF, baby is really cute.I am going through the same transition you are right now. I'm experimenting with digital and love it. I definitely want to continue moving in that direction. The freedom is liberating. =o)
I wasn't able to get a whole heck of a lot done on this illustration over the past week. Too much other stuff to do. I did manage to find some time to throw down a couple really basic colors though. I'm thinking it's going to look decent when finished. I'm going with some nice cool grays for the train which should look good.
That's about it.
As the kids would say, I'm outy.

Once again I defied the laws of time and space and managed to find an opportunity to complete the second piece in my monsters chasing a kid series. I think the next one I do is going to feature the gang on top of a train, though I haven't started work on it yet. As far as this snow one goes, I kinda like it. I think the kids outfit is good, and I like the composition for the most part.
Hope everyone enjoyed the Easter holiday. I spent it with my wife and her family, which always provides for more than one awkward moment, but then I guess that's what families are for, right? Awkward moments I mean.
The four year old daughter of my wife's cousin was asked to give me a hug by her mother but instead she took one look at me, put her hands over her eyes, then proceeded to yell at the top of her lungs "NO! SCARED! SCARED! SCARED!"
Everyone laughed.
You know...because apparently I'm scary.

Just returned from wet but nonetheless fun trip to Hershey Park with the kids and the_webmeister. Yes it was. The first trip which we've all taken together, that is. It went surprisingly well. Maybe because I turned green on the first roller coaster, so Daughter ended up going on all the really fun ones with The Webmeister.
The WM also took the kids on the flying swings, which make me feel queasy just to watch people on them. I did manage to take this picture of The Webmeister's rather sexy legs as they went around.
Pretty much the only ride I was able to go on without feeling vomitous was the Fender Bender bumper cars (we were rained out of all the water rides - seems ironic doesn't it? - and those are the only ones that don't make me ill).
My son looks way too happy about preparing to smash his mother to smithereens:
It's unnerving to think that he'll be eligible to get his license for real in (gulp!) two years.
Meanwhile, here's my daughter and Hershey Bear preparing to knock the Reese's pieces out of me:
And speaking of Reeses Pieces, here's the Man (the Candy Bar) himself with the kids:
Meanwhile, when the kids and I got home last night (the WM spent the evening with his parents in NJ) I found my toilet blocked. I got the plunger and started plunging, but to no avail. So being the intrepid soul that I am, I decided to search the Internet for help.
Of course, when the Webmeister arrived to find me checking out a video about unclogging a toilet...well, let's just put it this way...I will be hearing about this for a LONG, LONG time. I'd been plunging the $#@#&&** toilet for half an hour and then the Webmeister arrives and gives two quick plunges and gurgle gurgle, the thing clears. I bet it was just all the elbow grease I'd put in before he got there. Yeah. That was it.
Anyway, Videojug.com has all sorts of entertaining videos. After the toilet was duly unclogged, The Webmeister and I decided to do some relationship work by watching these two fine pieces of cinematic and romantic merit:
There are all sorts of amusing and informative things on this site...I can see it will be the source of many happy hours of procrastination in the days to come.
Well there goes all of my preconceived notions about French comics.
That looks awful.
