For me, there's nothing like reading a good, fun, happy, feel-good love story--which why I also love writing them. So years and years ago, when I started writing my first novel (pre-kids), I love, love--and I mean LOVED--the name Kennedy for a girl. So of course that's the name I gave my first heroine. A few years later, I had my first daughter--who I also named Kennedy. Fast forward several years and that book ended up getting published. Yay! I happily dedicated it to my daughter and looked forward to the day I could put the book in her hands and read her the dedication.

But when that day came something I should have anticipated, but stupidly didn't happened. My two sons, who were standing nearby, asked, "Why isn't my name in your book?"

Woops.

So about a year later, my second book was published which featured Brighton, my oldest son. He was thrilled that his name made it into a book, too, and asked me to read the story to him (keep in mind that he was 9 at the time and Luck of the Draw was a romantic comedy). Against my better judgement, I agreed, and together we read a chapter or two every night. When we finished, I asked, "Did you like it?" "It was okay," came his response. "Well, what didn't you like about it?"

Get this: "That my name wasn't in it."

Haha! Your fault, buddy!!! :)

So onto my third book--Minor Adjustments--featuring none other than Devon (child #3). Equal opportunity, right? But with this book, I took it a step further. Although the mc's name IS Devon, the child in the book (a darling four-year-old boy) was pattered after MY Devon--who was also four at the time. Which means that someday, when he, too, gets upset with me for writing a love story with his name in it, I can also tell him that little boy is him, too. :)

And no, I am hard at work on my 4th book featuring my youngest--Taycee Lynne. Here's hoping she'll love fun, happy romances as much as I do. :)

Interview:

What is one book everyone should read?
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. Completely brilliant and so thought provoking.

If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
C.S. Lewis (sensing a pattern here?), although I'd actually be scared to death of the encounter. I don't speak "genius" so I'm not sure I'd be able to carry on a conversation with him. But I would gush. A lot.

What is your favorite thing to eat for breakfast?
Grape Nuts. My husband thinks the stuff's disgusting, but what can I say? I LOVE the crunch.

Night owl, or early bird?

3. Book Review: Minor Adjustments by Rachael Renee Anderson

Boo
Chicago businessman and bachelor Devon Pierce doesn't want to be appointed guardian of Australian four-year-old Ryan Caldwell - but Ryan's solicitor, Stella Walker, won't take no for an answer. Little does Devon know that this "minor" adjustment will grant him a future he never expected to have. Told in a fast-paced, poignant, and witty style, Minor Adjustments will take you on a journey filled with humor, growth, romance, and love.

I was excited to get this book in the mail. I love Rachael - she has always been so kind and generous towards me - thus her book got bumped right to the top of my review pile :)

Minor Adjustments was a fun, quirky, entertaining book. I knew from the start how this book would end up but was pleasantly surprised by some of the twists and turns the story took to get there. They kept me engaged and interested throughout the book. The silly facts that Stella was constantly sharing and the Australian culture added to the fun side of this book. The characters were easy to relate to and I found myself cheering them on and hoping for their plans to succeed.

Minor Adjustments is a great story with wonderful characters that I highly recommend.

4. #BIR2010 - Book Giveaway: Luck of the Draw by Rachael Renee Anderson + Interview

Once in a while I meet and associate with an author who just stands out and leaves a lasting impression on me.  Rachael Renee Anderson is one such author.  I have loved the interactions I have had with her.  She is positive, kind and grateful.  I'm thrilled to have her here as part of the Best of 2010.

Interview:

If you could trade your life for that of a fictional character, who would that character be?
Anne Shirley of Green Gables. She's smart, imaginative, assertive, and Gilbert is rather dreamy. Besides, could you imagine a more perfect place to live?

What is the last movie you saw?
Secretariat--and it was excellent, by the way.

If you could re-write the ending to a movie, which one and why?
The Titanic. Yes, I realize it's based on a true story, but honestly, could there be a more depressing ending? I'd change it so that everyone lived--at least all of the people I liked. Then maybe I might actually like the movie.

If you could jump into any painting which one would it be?
Any of Thomas Kinkade's. So lovely, quaint, and gorgeous.

If you were a bird, which one would you be?
If it would help me conquer my fear of heights, I'm all over this one. A bald eagle, maybe? They're majestic, beautiful, commanding, and protected. At least no one would be allowed to hunt me.

Favorite Cartoon?
Phineas and Ferb, hands down. It's adorable, brilliant, and hilarious.

If you could choose only one time period and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
In a fictional world, where weeds don't grow, kids don't fight, laundry and food prepare themselves, politicians are all honest and good, there's no speed limit, and the climate and scenery is comparable to Hawaii. Yes, that sounds about right.

Luck of the Draw by Rachael Renee Anderson
Four weeks. Three roommates. Two dates each.

Brighton Andrews has never had a problem getting a girl to go out with him. So when his friends dare him to ask out three roommates at the same time, he figures this will be the easiest bet he'll ever win--even with the added clause that the girls can't find out they're all dating the same guy. And with a whole month free from laundry at stake, who could resist?

Of course, that's before he meets the girls.

Rachael Renee Anderson's charming Luck of the Draw puts a hilarious twist on a modern-day love story. Fast-paced, witty, and full of fun, the odds are stacked that this is one book you won't be able to put down.

Brighton Andrews has no idea what he is in for when he agrees to a "laundry bet" with his roommates. Why not agree to the bet? It means he'll finally have a reason to ask out Katherine, the cute girl he's seen at the library. All he has to do is date 2 o
