The New Yorker recently published “The Facebook Sonnet” by Sherman Alexie. The poem follows the AB-AB/CD-CD/EF-EF/GG rhyme scheme of the Shakespearean sonnet.
Here is a couplet from the piece: “Let’s sign up, sign in, and confess / Here at the altar of loneliness.” What do you think?
In the past, Alexie has published several poetry collections including The Business of Fancydancing (1991) and Dangerous Astronomy (2005). He also wrote the illustrated young-adult title, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian (2007).

I thought I’d try my hand at another couplet this morning. Here goes:
A long night’s rest
I thought I would get up this morning by eight
but my alarm clock read 11:01 meaning I slept late.
This week, Poetry Friday is being hosted at Biblio File.
I’ve probably written couplets before, but I don’t think I realized it. You see, I disliked poetry when I was in elementary school because I thought it ALL had to rhyme. Once I took a creative writing class in college, I realized that wasn’t the case. Nonetheless, had someone presented me with [...]
I saw on Sara Lewis Holmes' blog, Read Write Believe, a post about writing your life story in six words. Her six words are genius! Yesterday at my in-person crit group meeting, one member challenged the rest of us to write our memoirs in seven words each by next meeting, so I've got my thinking cap on.
I'm also a fan of Four Word Film Reviews. That's right. Four words. Here are a few entries of current movies:
10,000 B.C. - 'Mammoth' waste of time.
College Road Trip - Lawrence of A-Road-ia.
Vantage Point - Hurt shot: covert plot.
The Other Boleyn Girl - Bedded unwedded; wedded, beheaded!
I'm sure you see where this is headed. I'm thinking we need mini-reviews/teasers of children's books. And I'm thinking verse. Maybe couplets? I don't know, but I think this could be fun.
So, let me give this a quick try for a few books I've read and liked lately.
Sweethearts, by Sara Zarr:
Memories won't stay hidden away
Cameron's back, but will he stay?
I Heart You, You Haunt Me, by Lisa Schroeder
Ava knows that Jackson's dead
So why's he speaking in her head?
Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City, by Kirsten Miller (still reading this one)
Below New York, there's plague galore
What's Kiki really looking for?
How about you? What's your favorite book you've read recently? Care to share a couplet?
