1. Create Stunning Book Previews for Your Book with the New BookBuzzr Flipper

The BookBuzzr Flipper has been an essential tool for over 11,000 authors. Last July, with the release of the iPhone compatible Flipper we had made book excerpts of our authors accessible to a whole new class of users. Today, we’re pleased to announce the release of a new version of the Flipper where the pages rendered to readers are sharper and crisper regardless of zoom level.

Figure 1 is a snapshot of the earlier format. Figure 2 shows the same page, but with the new, advanced image formatting. Note that the image is sharper in Figure 2, scaling in such a way that the image’s resolution is always preserved. No matter how deep the zoom, the image scales accordingly, without getting blurred or creating jagged edges.

If you’re an existing author, you don’t need to do anything. Just take a look at your own book in the BookBuzzr Flipper and give us your feedback. If you’re an author thinking about using the BookBuzzr Flipper, here’s another reason for you to do so now!

I absolutely love playing CoverMatcher on Freado! It’s a great way to unwind after a stressful day, and unlike most games it has real prizes instead of virtual prizes! I love the selection of books available, and have been able to bid on books everyone in my family will enjoy – Teresa Delaney

Now based on the feedback that power readers like you have provided, we’ve taken CoverMatcher to a whole new level of awesome. You can now win, not just the best-seller that we list on the page, but also use the nifty search feature to hunt through Amazon’s book lists and select a book of your choice.

5. Why the Amazon KDP Select DOES NOT Affect BookBuzzr Authors

What is KDP Select?

KDP Select is an option for KDP publishers from Amazon. Through KDP Select, for an initial period of 90 days your Digital Book is exclusive to Kindle and is included in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library Program where it will earn a share of a monthly cash fund when readers borrow it. Also, you can promote your Digital Book as free for up to 5 days during these 90 days.

We have had a few authors asking if it is okay for them to continue to promote their book using BookBuzzr Technologies while on the KDP Select Program. Based on our understanding of the KDP Select terms of service and their FAQ and extensive research on various forums on the Internet, here’ why we (the BookBuzzr team) have concluded  that KDP Select DOES NOT affect BookBuzzr Authors. Of course, we expect that you will do your own research and draw your own conclusions. Feel free to jump in the comments section and let us know if we’ve misunderstood something.

Authors who use BookBuzzr technologies DO NOT violate KDP Select Terms of Service

If your book is on the KDP Select program, you are perfectly within your rights to market and promote your book through other sources. For example, you can go ahead and tweet about your book on Twitter. And you can talk about your book on your blog. If you use BookBuzzr technologies to market your book, you are not distributing your book through BookBuzzr or selling your books through BookBuzzr. Therefore, you are not violating Amazon terms of service. So go ahead and continue with your BookBuzzr subscription. It may even help complement your efforts on the KDP Select program.

Distribute Means Giving Away or Selling Your Book in it’s Entirety

The KDP Select FAQ Page states: “When you choose KDP Select for a book, you’re committing to make the digital format of that book available exclusively through KDP. During the period of exclusivity, you cannot distribute your book digitally anywhere else, including on your website, blogs, etc. However, you can continue to distribute your book in physical format, or in any format other than digital. See the KDP Select Terms and Conditions for more information.”

It’s important to understand that distribution refers to the act of giving away or selling your book in it’s entirety on ebook distribution sites such as Smashwords, BookBaby etc. or in the form of PDF or other digital or electronic versions of your ENTIRE (FULL) book.

Giving Away Your Book Excerpt is NOT the Same as Book Distribution

However, when you provide your book excerpt it DOES NOT constitute a violation of KDP Select terms of service. Book excerpts have always been a valid form of book marketing for authors. The BookBuzzr Flipper Widget and Book Sampler is best-suited for book excerpts. If you are part of the KDP Select program, please do not upload your ENTIRE book. But feel free to put up your excerpt.

Amazon’s Exclusivity is for Distribution and Sales Only

6. How to Create a Viral QuickQuiz

Some of you may already know about the new viral book marketing technology from BookBuzzr named QuickQuiz.
This book marketing technology can be extremely powerful when used in the right way. This article gives you a few guidelines on how to create a QuickQuiz game that gets you the best returns on the time that you spend creating it.

1. Choose a topic that:

  • Is relevant to your book’s topic
  • Resonates with your readers
  • Has a large enough audience

For example, let’s say you’ve written a book that features witches and werewolves and is targeted towards young adults. An effective QuickQuiz game could be on the Harry Potter series.

2. Don’t try to market your book through the quiz. You can always put up your marketing message in the “Sponsor’s Message” section. This will appear at least 5 times in a game that gets completed.

3. If a reader answers wrong or runs out of time, he will not be able to play that QuickQuiz again! Don’t make the first few questions too difficult. Make the first two or three questions easy so that your readers feel encouraged and are able to move forward.

4. Give your QuickQuiz a short, snappy title which looks attractive when viewed on a reader’s Facebook wall.

5. Create many quizzes. There is no limit on the number of QuickQuizzes you can create. You are limited only by your creativity. Remember that each quiz you create can give you hundreds or even thousands of exposures (impressions) for your book.

6. Share your QuickQuizzes with as many people as you can. Every QuickQuiz will have its own link. Share the link on Twitter, post it on your Facebook page, and email it out to your friends. You can also embed the QuickQuiz on your blog or website. This will engage readers who visit your blog or website and make it fun for them to stick around.

7. Note that a reader who completes a QuickQuiz will be presented with another QuickQuiz that you’ve created. This will continue to happen until all the quizzes that you’ve created are shown to the reader. After this, other quizzes created by other authors will be presented.

8. The reader will have 3 ‘Quiz-Keys’, that help the reader in completing the quiz. You can make the questions progressively difficult as the reader can invoke the 3 ‘Quiz-Keys’ in order to complete the game (see picture below).

So go ahead and have some fun creating a few interesting quizzes that entertain your readers. Done right, your readers will spread your QuickQuizzes while you focus on what you do best: Writing your next book!

7. How to Use the John Locke Principle to Market Your Book Through Games

John Locke has sold a million copies of his various books. He has also written a very useful guide titled “How I Sold 1 Million eBooks in 5 Months” that describes his methods.

One of the key principles in the book is the idea of “transfer of loyalty”. While this is a well-known and much used principle in marketing, John has used it to great effect in creating effective blog posts that promote his books. Hence, I’ve referred to it as the John Locke principle.

So what is this principle?

Take a topic that will be of interest to your audience and somehow tie your own content to that topic so as to get the audience to transfer its loyalty to your content. For example, let’s say that you’ve written a book that will appeal to Harry Potter fans. You write a blog post about the latest Harry Potter movie. Then you push your blog post on Twitter to people who are looking for anything related to Harry Potter. They land up on your blog post, realize that you’ve got a book that has something for the Harry Potter aficionado and voila, you’ve got a potential customer!

The method is really simple and really effective.

Many writers were already using this principle in their blog posts prior to the release of John’s manual. Now with the release of the book, the number of writers creating blogs that are intended to get readers to transfer their loyalty is bound to explode.

At BookBuzzr, we believe that this method can be used to market books by creating word games and quiz games that help get new readers. In fact, we developed our Hangman game technology some months ago keeping this principle in mind (although at that time it did not have a name or a famous author endorsing the system!) A word game that allows for transfer of loyalty has novelty value. Done right may work even better than a blog post. Here’s why:

1. It can be consumed faster than a blog post.
2. It can be more fun and interactive than a blog post.
3. In most cases, it’s faster to create than a blog post.

Working Example:

BookBuzzr Author Pro subscriber – Eric Hamilton Wilson – has written a book that revolves around the death of Princess Diana. He describes his book ‘Love & Death In Paris ’97’ as under:

This suspenseful novel contains themes of love and loss, peace and forgiveness. It follows the adventures of Daniel Plain, a young man from Seattle who moves in Paris in the fateful year of 1997. Daniel’s life becomes intertwined with events linked to Diana, Princess of Wales, and he finds himself in great danger as he seeks to unravel the mysteries surrounding the tragic loss of the people’s princess.

To promote his book, Eric Hamilton has created a Hangman trivia game that challenges the reader to make up the words. Try the game below and see if the concept works for you.

Now all Eric Hamilton has to do is to market this game to people who are interested in Princess Diana (and I think there are about a billion such people in the world!) One way for him to market this game is to send a tweet to

10. New Technology to Earn Goodwill From Your Readers

As an author you want to build a relationship with your readers. One way to do this is to give your readers something of value when they visit your web page, Facebook page (or Facebook fan page) or Twitter page. This could be interesting content, an opportunity to participate in a prize giveaway or something similar.

At BookBuzzr, we’ve come up with a new technology called ‘Goodwill Builder.’ The concept works like this: When a visitor comes to your website or blog (or Facebook page), they get to see a message that offers 1,000 free points for use on Freado.com. When the visitor clicks on the message they are taken to Freado where they can register and use those points in bidding for books or for the grand prize (current grand prize is an iPad.)

How valuable is 1,000 points for a book-lover? Quite valuable considering that there are as many as 15 books on Freado that require just 1,000 points to win (and scores of other books that require just a few thousand points.)

This feature is available only for subscribers of BookBuzzr Pro (this is our premium offering wherein you pay a monthly subscription fee) and is not available for users of the free BookBuzzr widget and other free technologies.

If you are a BookBuzzr Pro subscriber, please follow these steps to get your own ‘goodwill builder’:

  1. Login to your BookBuzzr account. This will take you to your BookBuzzr Book Marketing home.
  2. Select the book for which you have a BookBuzzr Pro account.
  3. Click on Goodwill builder
  4. Click on the type of widget that you want (either vertical or horizontal.)
  5. Copy paste the code into your blog or author webpage
  6. If you simply want to share the link on your Twitter feed, Facebook page or email just copy-paste the link and share it.
  7. When a user clicks on the badge or link, they are led to Freado.com. If they register there, they get their 1,000 free Freado points!
  8. As an author, you also get 500 free points everytime somebody that you refer to Freado (using Goodwill Builder) registers on Freado

11. An Example of a Good Book Trailer

Most book-trailers don’t receive any attention from readers. Problems with many book-trailers include the following:

1. The music does not match the mood of the books

2. They are too long

3. They are too wordy

This particular book-trailer of a book by author – L. Anne Carrington does not have any of these problems.

  • The music matches the mood of the book and is likely to appeal to it’s target demographic (mostly sporty young men and some women.)
  • It is short – just 57 seconds long.
  • And it does an admirable job of describing the story in just a few short sentences.

The producers of this book-trailer have been frugal in making the book-trailer. Probably a simple PowerPoint presentation with a background music score converted into a video. Just shows you that you don’t need to spend a fortune in creating a book-trailer.

It’s no surprise that the book has received a tremendous amount of interest on Freado.com with over 1,300 full-screen views already recorded. You can also learn more about the book and read a preview in BookBuzzr format below:
