1. Skip A Starbucks Day--Part Two (awesome prizes to be had!)

If you've been following this blog for a while, you probably know how much I adore the incredible  C.J. Redwine. She's both a friend and a mentor, and an uber-talented author to boot.

And you might also remember a few years back when I took part in a special fund raiser to help her raise enough money to bring her beautiful baby girl home from China.

Thanks to everyone's support, the fundraiser was a huge success, and the adorable Johanna is now happily settled with C.J. and her husband Clint. I've even had the chance to meet her, and she is one huggable, amazing kid.

And today, we need to make that magic happen again.

Meet Isabella Grace:

(DON'T YOU JUST WANT TO SNUGGLE HER?????)

C.J. and her husband are in the process of adopting this beautiful little girl from China. And because Isabella has multiple medical needs, the process has gone much quicker than they were anticipating. They're excited and overjoyed that they'll get to bring their daughter home that much sooner. But it's also left them scrambling to come up with the $15,000* they need to adopt her.

That's where Skipping a Starbucks comes in.

The basic idea? Give up one tiny indulgence today (like a $5.00 coffee) and use it to help bring this beautiful little girl home. It's AMAZING how huge of a difference those small donations can make.

And as an extra-huge thank you, many of her friends in publishing (including me!) are offering up a MULTITUDE of prizes that CJ is giving away on her blog--including signed books, a diamond-and-tanzanite necklace set, and a full manuscript critique from a literary agent.

Details on what's up for grabs, and how to donate (also a progress bar to show how close they're coming to meeting their goal) can all be found HERE

* Any funds raised beyond the $15k will be given to The Moses Basket, a non-profit organization that supports adoptive families through grants, resources, and support.

2. The Book Babe Spotlight: Author James A Owen--with a giveaway!

Yay--it's time for another awesome Book Babe spotlight! (These are always some of my favorite things I post--odd, considering I don't write them. Maybe that's telling me something...)

Anyway, for those who don't know, the lovely lady pictured above is my fabulous friend Faith, a.k.a. the Book Babe. And in addition to her being the most amazing mentor and cheerleader EVER--and offering incredible editing services--she is also an AMAZING source for book recommendations. In fact, I discovered several of my favorite authors because of Faith--and nothing makes me happier than one of her gushy emails telling me about a book I HAVE to read. (She seriously has impeccable taste).

So Faith occasionally puts together spotlights on some of her favorite authors for me to post for you guys, so she can tell you herself why you need to discover these incredible authors.

And so, without further ado, I give you The Book Babe:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
James Owen: A Leviathan of Pop Culture Cleverly Disguised As An Unassuming Author
My first introduction to James was, as was the norm as a book buyer, through the publisher's Fall catalog. The cover for Here There Be Dragons was beautiful and the premise seemed interesting, so I ordered it.
We booked him for a signing in December, along with Stephenie Meyer. The idea was to give our customers the opportunity to get signed books as Holiday Presents. We knew that by pairing a first time author with one as popular as Stephanie, James would do well. What we did not know was that Jam
3. Author Appreciation Blog Tour: Myra McEntire
Not sure if you've already seen a few of these posts floating around the blogosphere, but myself and a group of fellow bloggers have all teamed up today to pay tribute to an author who is every bit as incredible as her books. The hilarious and fabulous Myra McEntire.
Why Myra?
Well, we all have our own reasons to celebrate her awesomeness. Maybe it's her hilarious tweets or her sweet and steamy books. For me, it's more personal than that--though that may be because I'm lucky to *know* Myra a little.
Myra is exactly the kind of author I want to be. Classy (well, when she's not tweeting about Moonshine and pimped-out big wheels--then she's just my favorite person ever), kind, generous, supportive, and most importantly, REAL. She's not afraid to be herself, whether it be admitting that she's running out for emergency chocolate in frumpy flannel, or being the one to jump in with a blog post that says everything I'd been thinking but couldn't figure out how to say.
I value her opinion so highly that she was the friend I turned to when I needed one. more. opinion. on the early chapters of LET THE SKY FALL to make sure I wasn't crazy for thinking I could write YA. And it was her sweet, encouraging response that gave me the courage to finally send pages to my agent.
So if you aren't following this amazing lady on Twitter or her blog you NEED to. And if you haven't read HOURGLASS--or pre-ordered TIMEPIECE--here are some handy ways to do just that:
4. The "Spread the Love" ARC giveaway!
Ever since I got back from ALA I have been promising you guys some epic ARC contests to share my spoils--and now that WriteOnCon is over, I FINALLY had a chance to organize one. So I've selected four from my stash which I *suspect* you're all going to be pretty exited about, and I give you: The "Spread the Love" ARC giveaway. Here's what's up for grabs today:
(Hee... I feel like I need a drumroll...)
CROSSED, by Ally Condie
The hotly awaited second book in the dystopian Matched trilogy
In search of a future that may not exist and faced with the decision of who to share it with, Cassia journeys to the Outer Provinces in pursuit of Ky - taken by the Society to his certain death - only to find that he has escaped, leaving a series of clues in his wake.
Cassia's quest leads her to question much of what she holds dear, even as she finds glimmers of a different life across the border. But as Cassia nears resolve and certainty about her future with Ky, an invitation for rebellion, an unexpected betrayal, and a surprise visit from Xander - who may hold the key to the uprising and, still, to Cassia's heart - change the game once again. Nothing is as expected on the edge of Society, where crosses and double crosses make the path more twisted than ever.
SHATTER ME, by Tahereh Mafi
Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days. The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old-girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting asThe Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices,Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel
5. Liar Society Fangirls--Day Five
Last--but CERTAINLY not least--we have the absolutely amazing Kimberly Derting. You've seen Elana Johnson, me, Beth Revis, and Suzanne Young get caught up with Liar Society fever.
Now it's time to watch Kim TRY to resist LiLa's books Siren call--and fail epically. Enjoy!
Heh. We're still waiting on Oprah's call. Personally I think she'd look AWESOME in a pink wig, don't you?
Hope you guys enjoyed these vlogs as much as we enjoyed making them. If you did--I promise, THE LIAR SOCIETY is even better. If you didn't--uh, don't worry, THE LIAR SOCIETY is nothing like these.
And because we seriously cannot tell you how much you all NEED to read this book, Beth, Elana, and I (though guys, I'll confess, it was mostly Beth and Elana) organized a LIAR SOCIETY contest of epic proportions--starting Monday. Here's all the details
To enter, all you have to do is one (or both!) of the following:
  • Tweet! Use the hashtag #liarsociety (so we can find you). If you have pinkified your avatar in some way, you get an extra entry. We'll randomly be selecting one hashtag user Monday through Friday next week. (PS: @ reply @landlroecker and they'll pink your hair FOR you. So no excuses.)
  • Blog! Just put our button for THE LIAR SOCIETY somewhere on your blog, preferably front and center where it's easy to spot. And we made that easy for you, too--just copy and paste the code under the button and it'll show up in your blog easy-peasy, all linked up and ready to go.
We Love the Liar Society!
6. Liar Society Fangirls--Day Four
Before I start today's post, there's something that has to be said.
Yesterday, the writing world suffered a tremendous loss when the amazingly talented and wonderful woman, L.K. (Lisa) Madigan, lost her fight to pancreatic cancer. I'd never had the pleasure of knowing her beyond blogs and Twitter, but I adored her both online and on the page. And she was friends with so many of my friends, I've felt this loss very deeply. My thoughts and prayers are with all suffering through this loss.
Part of me wondered if I should hold off today's TLS festivities. But Lisa was such a joyous, supportive person, I have a feeling she would want us to go on, to keep talking about happy things, about great books, to keep supporting friends with fun and laughter.
So that's what I'm going to do, but with a slightly heavy heart. And I find myself compelled to add that if you haven't had a chance to read FLASH BURNOUT or THE MERMAID'S MIRROR, I highly recommend you do. Lisa was kind enough to leave behind these stories for us to hold to, now that she's left us. Savor them--they're a tremendous literary legacy.
And...I think that's enough sadness for one day.
It's time to focus on something truly hilarious. This is not really a Bookanista post today, because we're continuing with The Liar Society Fangirls videos. But since TLS is an AWESOME book I highly recommend (you can read my review HERE) I'm counting it for the Bookanistas too.
You've seen Elana Johnson, me, and Beth Revis all go...a little crazy for THE LIAR SOCIETY. But NO ONE goes quite as crazy as Suzanne Young. You'll see what I mean...
I don't care how many times I watch that--it STILL makes me giggle.
And come back tomorrow when Kimberly Derting shows us why resistance is futile when it comes to this book. See you then!
For more book recommendations, check out what my fellow Bookanistas are up to:
7. Liar Society Fangirls--Day Three
Okay, you've seen Elana Johnson go pink. You've seen me go insane (and pink). Now let's see what happens to Beth Revis when she lets THE LIAR SOCIETY into her life:
Anyone else think she should go pink all the time? It really IS her color!
Tomorrow we have Suzanne Young--and I'm not lying when I say I actually snorted when I first watched her footage. Do NOT miss it. :)
8. Liar Society Fangirls--Day Two
Okay, so yesterday you saw the frawesome Elana Johnson get taken over by THE LIAR SOCIETY. And today...it's my turn.
And um...fair warning. This is DEFINITELY the biggest dose of Shannon Shame I've ever given you. Only for LiLa, and their amazing book.
Yeah...I have nothing to say except...
Love you LiLa!
*hides from the humiliation*
And come back tomorrow so see how THE LIAR SOCIETY affected Beth Revis!
9. Liar Society Fangirls--Day One
So here's the deal. A few weeks ago I was included in an EPIC email chain from some of my favorite writers, wanting to brainstorm ideas for a way to show the blogosphere just how incredible THE LIAR SOCIETY, by Lisa and Laura Roecker, is.
After much hilarity...we settled on this:
5 vlogs.
5 fangirls.
5 fabulous pink wigs.
All kinds of awesome.
A new vlog will be posted each day this week--and trust me guys, they are a crack-up. I can't decide which is my favorite. So I'll leave it up to you.
Up today is the ever-hilarous Elana Johnson. Enjoy!
*blushes*
Oh, and btw--you can blame my husband for that horrible leg shot. I SPECIFICALLY asked him if the cat had hiked up my skirt and he was like, nope it's good. SIGH. I wish I at least had a tan. And some muscle tone.
*grumbles*
But that's NOTHING on the Shannon Shame I have for you guys tomorrow.
Make sure you stop by to see it.
It.
Will.
Be.
Epic.
10. A mini Shannon Update
Hey guys!
So, I'm still here in the VERY awesome city of San Francisco. Still in the middle of the San Francisco Writer's Conference (SUCH an awesome Conference btw). Still with the lovely Carolina Valdez Miller. Still having SO MUCH FUN.
I promise--I will have an EPIC update to come (let me put it this way: Carol and I brought a video camera. So yeah, there will be a vlog).
But I'm doing this quick post because I wanted to give you a heads-up to the change in blogging schedule next week. All my regular series are postponed until the following week (so yes, there will be no MMGM or Shannon-Style or questions being answered)--but don't worry, what I have in store for you is EVEN BETTER.
There WILL be vlogs. There WILL be Shannon Shame. And yes--you do NOT want to miss it. I'll even give you a hint. It has SOMETHING to do with this:
Yeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
The Epicness starts Monday.
Are.
You.
Ready???????
12. Bookanista Preview: So Silver Bright Cover Reveal--AND A GIVEAWAY!!!!
Yay--it's Bookanista Thursday again, and I am SO excited today because I get to be part of a very special campaign to promote a book I have been waiting FOREVER to read: SO SILVER BRIGHT, by the lovely Lisa Mantchev
I think most of you know what a huge Lisa Mantchev fan I am. (I mean, I gave her a whole WEEK on my blog last year). Her books truly are one-of-a-kind, and I have been desperate for SO SILVER BRIGHT since the day I finished PERCHANCE TO DREAM.
Sadly, I still have a bit of a wait on the book (though they tell me an ARC might be on the way soon--*SQUEALS AND DIES OF HAPPINESS*) But...they gave me something to tide me over. See, Lisa's books aren't just known for the page-turning, gorgeous, unlike-anything-else writing. They're known for their AMAZING covers.
I mean, they really are GORGEOUS. So gorgeous I'm tempted to buy prints and hang them on my wall. Look at how awesome they are:
We're talking seriously, seriously beautiful art. So I've been DYING to see the cover art for SO SILVER BRIGHT, crossing my fingers, toes, and eyes it wouldn't let me down.
Well, I can tell you right now--IT DOESN'T DISAPPOINT. It *might* even be my favorite of the three. And today, I am honored that I get to help reveal it!
But... only a little piece.
In what I think is a brilliant (and evil) campaign, Feiwel & Friends has been revealing the cover piece by piece all week throughout the blogosphere. So today, I have a tiny snippet for you--and the rest will be revealed right here tomorrow. Make sure you come back.
Are you ready for it?
*drumroll please*
Ta Da!
AHHHHH--it's Bertie's eyes (with WAY cool eyeliner, btw) and silver hair!!!!!
Love, Love, LOVE!
And just to tease you even more, here's the blurb from the back of the book:
Bertie thinks her quest is almost done. With the help of Ariel and the rest of her friends, she has managed to find her father and rescue the kidnapped pirate, Nate, from Sedna the sea goddess. Now all she has to do is reunite her father, The Scrimshander, with her mother, Ophelia, and she will finally have a true family of her own. However, things are never easy for Beatrice S
13. In which I compromise my principles...
Not sure if you've looked up in the sky recently, but if you have, you might have seen something like this:
Sorry about that. That was my doing.
Yes, swine have most likely sprouted wings and taken to the skies, all because--as some of you already know--I crossed over to the dark side this weekend. I joined Facebook.
Which is especially shocking because it comes only days after I made yet another huge, personal concession and joined Goodreads.
But the reason I caved--and believe me, I did NOT make the decisions lightly--is because I want to support the writing community as much as I can, and because I like to be as accessible as possible, to anyone who wants to reach me. (well...not to the creepers, but hopefully my security settings will keep them away. :D)
So in that vein, I joined Goodreads, because I realize how much it can matter to authors to have their books marked as "to read" or "read" and to have reviews posted on there. The star system still TOTALLY makes me ookey--I keep going back and adjusting them, and am tempted to simply remove them all together. But as a fellow writer in the trenches who will hopefully someday be having my book marked as "to read," I thought it only fair that I give support where I can.
And I joined Facebook because I realize that many of you aren't on Twitter (which, seriously guys--you are missing out!) and I've gotten to the point where I can't "follow back" everyone anyway. Plus I just don't have the kind of blog hopping time I used to. So I wanted to create one more place where I could keep up with what you have going on, and where you can reach me if you need me. (What you could possibly need me for at this point, I don't know. Thoughts on hot guys, perhaps? lolcat pictures? Shannon Shame? I don't have much else...)
But yeah. I've officially crossed over to the dark side. And while it is--I'll confess--not AS bad as I thought it would be (in fact, turns out my agent is even on Facebook--who knew? Yay! A whole new way to potentially drive her crazy!) I am a little worried about the whole TIME SUCK issue, so I'm going to be very careful about balancing my social networking time.
All of which is my longwinded, rambling way of saying:
*herald trumpets sound*
If you would like to "friend" me on Facebook, I *think* you can do that HERE.
And if you would like to "friend" me on Goodreads, I *think* you can do that HERE.
I've been trying to track some of you down and send the invites myself, but I'm still moderately befuddled by the complexity of these websites (oh how I long for the simplicity of Twitter) so I know I'm missing like a bazillion of you. So please, if you want to see what kind of shenanigans I can cause in these new venues (*rubs palms together with an evil smile*) send me a friend invite. I promise I'll accept. Well...unless you're a creeper. But I'm pretty sure that doesn't count any of you. ;)
Have a great day, and watch out for those flying swine!
14. Across the World Tour for Across the Universe (and because it's me...I brought the Shannon Shame)
Okay, I am SO excited to be a part of this blog tour. I mean, how awesome does Beth's book sound? *taps foot impatiently for my turn with The Bookanistas' ARC*
Not to mention Beth has been one of my favorite bloggers since I first "found" her about a year-and-a-half ago. She was one of those people that I just instantly thought: I need to know this girl!  So it has been such a thrill and honor to get to know her and watch all her tremendous success and be a small part of her journey toward literary world domination. (oh, and you can bet there will be domination. Have you SEEN the buzz she has going--all totally deserved, btw?)
And now she has a secret password protected section for her website--dang, the girl knows how to keep us in suspense!!! (Though...I was lucky enough to get the password early, so I've already checked it out. There is some way cool stuff in there, guys. For realzies. And no, I won't give away the secret. Well...not unless the bribe you offer is REALLY good) ;)
So here's how this works. I'm hanging out over Beth's blog providing TONS of Shannon Shame as I relate my adventure in Itter, Austria. (And believe me guys, it's heavy on the shame. Let's just say mountain biking is involved. And the pictures that go with it are especially embarrassing. I'm twirling in one of them. TWIRLING!)
But before you hop over there to laugh at me (and yeah...you're gonna laugh at me--le sigh), here's the information Beth has provided for how this tour works--and make sure you read all the way to the bottom to get today's clue.
Across the Universe is a sci fi coming out from Penguin/Razorbill on January 11, 2011. Author Beth Revis describes it as "a murder mystery set in space," but it also has romance, adventure, and dystopian elements. In the book, a girl boards an interstellar spaceship in a journey across the universe to find a new planet.
To celebrate the book's upcoming release, Beth's gathered together writers and readers from across the blogosphere to share their stories of adventures they've had across the world. Check out her site the first two weeks of November to read about adventures from the Wild West to Indonesia, from Europe to Africa.
And as you're going across the world with all these adventures, be sure to pick up the clues. On Beth's webpage is a secret link--LOOK for it, and you'll SEE it. But it's password protected! To find the password, you'll need to go on the adventures with us, pick up the letters, and re-arrange them into the secret phrase.
What do you get for playing? On the password protected page there's tons of secret information about the book--hidden Easter Eggs, the surprising origins of one of the characters, and the unexpected inspiration behind the space ship. But, more than that--there's also a chance for prizes! Only accessible from the password protected page is a form to enter a drawing--the winner will get a signed and doodled ARC of Acros
