1. The Son of Neptune (Heroes of Oympus, Book Two) by Rick Riordan

There isn't much info right now concerning the second book in the Heroes of Olympus series, The Son of Neptune, but the title seems to imply that Percy Jackson will be back in the spotlight... at least a little, anyway.

Here's the latest info from the Camp Half-Blood wiki.
***SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ THE LOST HERO***

"The Son of Neptune", (Roman equivalent of Poseidon) most likely refers to Percy Jackson, the main protagonist of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy did not appear in the first book, The Lost Hero, due to the fact that he had gone missing or possibly had been kidnapped, three days prior to the beginning of the book.

By the end of The Lost Hero, it is revealed that he has been swapped with Jason by Hera (Greek equivalent to Juno), and is now at the Roman equivalent of Camp Half-Blood. It is likely that he is unaware of his identity, just as Jason Grace was. It is unknown at this current time if Percy has likewise been set up with a new girlfriend and best friend like Jason was. It is also possible this book will tell of Percy's experience at the Roman camp while Jason was at the Greek one.

While the actual plot is still in the land of rumor, I think the idea of following Percy around in this new setting would be an interesting story, providing us with the chance to see a hero that's both familiar and different at the same time.

I'll be sure to keep you updated with any new information that comes along regarding The Son of Neptune.

2. Christmas Tales for zombie lovers (It helps kids, too)

There's a chill in the air and Christmas can be seen on the horizon. It's a festive time so let's get into the holiday spirit with a well-known little jingle.

I saw Mommy eating Santa's brains
Underneath the mistletoe last night.
She didn't see me reach
for the pistol at my feet;
She was too busy slurping up
delicious Santa meat.

Okay, maybe it's not what you had in mind when I mentioned the holiday spirit, but it's still a time for giving and proceeds from the sales of The Undead That Saved Christmas benefit the Hugs Foster Family Agency (hugsffa.org) and will help them give their foster children gifts this holiday season.

Summary
The Undead That Saved Christmas brings together various talented authors and artists from Great Britain, the United States and Ireland. Stories include The Magic of Christmas, by Rebecca Besser; Santa Claws is Coming to Town, by Calvin A.L. Miller II; Night of the Frozen Elf, by Richard S. Crawford; And to All a Good Fright by Stacey Graham; and many others.

The anthology also includes rich illustrations by David Naughton-Shires, Jason Tudor, Chris Williams and more. Another thing to expect in this anthology is a fun collection of holiday zombie-themed poems and carols. And to wrap things up there is an awesome assortment of original comics, from Mike Schneider, Nate Call, and many others.

3. Attack of the zombies, courtesy of Joe McKinney

Nothing says Halloween like a mob of zombies on the prowl for fresh brains, and Joe McKinney has provided something (okay, two somethings) to fill that zombie craving.

Thousands are dead or dying - but the worst is only beginning. Amid the wreckage, something unimaginable is happening: a deadly virus has broken out, returning the dead to life - with an insatiable hunger for human flesh.

The nightmare begins within hours; the plague has spread all over Texas. San Antonio police officer Eddie Hudson finds his city overrun by a voracious army of the living dead. Along with a small group of survivors, Eddie must fight off the savage horde in a race to save his family.

There's no place to run. No place to hide. The zombie horde is growing as the virus runs rampant. Eddie knows he has to find a way to destroy these walking horrors... but he doesn't know the price he will have to pay.

Apocalypse of the Dead
Release date: November 2, 2010

Two hellish years. That's how long it's been since the hurricanes flooded the Gulf Coast, and the dead rose up from the ruins. The cities were quarantined; the infected, contained. Any unlucky survivors were left to fend for themselves.

One boatload of refugees manages to make it out alive - but one passenger carries the virus. Within weeks, the zombie epidemic spreads across the globe. Now, retired U.S. Marshal Ed Moore must lead a group of strangers to safety, searching for sanctuary from the dead.

In the North Dakota Grasslands, bands of survivors converge upon a single outpost. Run by a self-appointed preacher of fierce conviction - and frightening beliefs - it may be humanity's only hope. 4. Jack the Ripper, hero of Whitechaple

You might think you know the story of Jack the Ripper, but do you really? Maybe those senseless killings weren't so senseless.

See things in a different light with Ripper's Row, written by Donnie Light and Shawn Weaver.

Summary
In the fall of 1888, Jack the Ripper cut a swath of blood and terror through the streets of London, in an area known as Whitechaple. The papers called him a monster for attacking innocent women in the night. But if the world only knew the truth behind Jack’s monstrous acts, they would think differently. Jack was a madman, yes, but a madman on a mission to save the world from the foul creatures of the night.  Creatures that haunted his soul, tortured his existence, and made every minute of his life a living hell.

Only Jack the Ripper could save the unsuspecting masses from the vampires that ruled the streets of Whitechaple after dark. Only he could strike down the dangerous Master Vampire William Carpenter—or die in the attempt.

Follow the infamous “Jack the Ripper” through a harrowing adventure to take back the streets of Victorian London, and reclaim the honor of a love lost to darkness.

Expected release date is October 31st, and Halloween is the perfect time for the book to make it's debut. You can find out more about Ripper's Row by visiting the websites of Donnie Light and Shawn Weaver.

8. Out of the Dark by David Weber

What happens when you blend dark fantasy with science fiction? You get Out of the Dark.

Expanded from a short story that first appeared in George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois's anthology, Warriors, Out of the Dark is the first book in a trilogy that blends elements of military science fiction with dark fantasy.

Apparently, an alien survey team was scoping out Earth at the time that King Henry V was slaughtering the French at Agincourt. This caused the survey team to classify humankind as blood-thirsty barbarians. Times have changed since that dark episode in history, but the aliens aren't impressed and they send their warriors, the Shongairi, to conquer the barbarians.

Unfortunately for the invaders, vampires aren't too happy with their food source being threatened so they step out of the shadows to aid the humans in their fight to save the planet.

Aliens, vampires, and a battle to save the planet all in one book? It's a tall order to fill but the author of the Honor Harrington series just might be able to pull it off.

What do you think? Aliens and vampires an interesting combo or would you prefer to keep your sci-fi and fantasy separate?

Shadowspell by Jenna Black

With his homicidal appetite and immortal powers, the Erlking has long been the nightmare of the Fae realm. A fragile treaty with the Faerie Queen, sealed with a mysterious spell, is the one thing that keeps him from hunting unchecked in Avalon, the only place on Earth where humans and Fae live together. Which means Dana’s in trouble, since it’s common knowledge that the Faerie Queen wants her – and her rare Faeriewalker powers – dead.

11. LMAO You have to see this

Please forgive me, but I just can't help it. This trailer is hilarious and some twisted part of me would actually like to see the book turned into a movie simply because the story 'goes where no man has gone before' :oP

Summary: Night of the Living Trekkies
Journey to the Final Frontier of Sci-Fi Zombie Horror!

12. Think your marriage is rough? Try being "Married with Zombies"

I will be the first to admit it. I'm not thrilled with zombies. The whole 'dead come to life starving for brains' thing wore off a long time ago.

BUT then, a funny thing happened. People stopped taking zombies so seriously, and that lighter atmosphere brought the life back to the dead. Because of my aversion to the living dead, I was probably one of the last people on the planet to see ZombieLand. I finally broke down and saw it just to see what all the fuss was about...and because I think Woody Harrelson is a riot.

Guess what - I loved that movie; the horror/comedy combo worked for me, and Married with Zombies by Jesse Petersen might have that same kind of appeal. It certainly doesn't seem to take itself too seriously, with just the right amount of snark added to keep things lively. You can get a brief peek at it here.

What do you think? Interested in seeing what happens when the zombie plague strikes mankind?

Summary
A heartwarming tale of terror in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.

Meet Sarah and David.

Once upon a time they met and fell in love. But now they're on the verge of divorce and going to couples' counseling. On a routine trip to their counselor, they notice a few odd things - the lack of cars on the highway, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counselor, Dr. Kelly, is ripping out her previous client's throat.

Meet the Zombies.

Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But, just because there are zombies, doesn't mean your other problems go away. If the zombies don't eat their brains, they might just kill each other.

13. Did you catch "Halo" by Alexandra Adornetto

Halo hit the shelves yesterday. Noooo....not the video game; the new book from Alexandra Adornetto, who published her first book, The Shadow Thief, in Australia at the age of fourteen. Halo marks her U.S. debut.

While it does have the now-standard storyline of a mortal in a relationship with someone who something else, it sounds like it has potential to go in new directions.

Halo by Alexandra Adornetto

Three angels are sent down to bring good to the world: Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, a teenage girl who is the least experienced of the trio. But she is the most human, and when she is romantically drawn to a mortal boy, the angels fear she will not be strong enough to save anyone—especially herself—from the Dark Forces.

Is love a great enough power against evil?

15. "What the Night Knows" by Dean Koontz

Wow! Have you heard about this one yet? It looks like a really good ghost story that got mixed in with a really good detective story... and the cover looks cool.

What the Night Knows by Dean Koontz will be out December 28th.

Summary
In the late summer of a long ago year, a killer arrived in a small city. His name was Alton Turner Blackwood, and in the space of a few months he brutally murdered four families. His savage spree ended only when he himself was killed by the last survivor of the last family, a fourteen-year-old boy.

Half a continent away and two decades later, someone is murdering families again, recreating in detail Blackwood’s crimes. Homicide detective John Calvino is certain that his own family—his wife and three children—will be targets in the fourth crime, just as his parents and sisters were victims on that distant night when he was fourteen and killed their slayer.

As a detective, John is a man of reason who deals in cold facts. But an extraordinary experience convinces him that sometimes death is not a one-way journey, that sometimes the dead return.

Okay, maybe "soon" is jumping the gun just a little bit, but February 1st, 2011 isn't that far off in the future.

Invincible, the second book in Sherrilyn Kenyon's Chronicles of Nick series should pick up the pace a little bit so it might be worth looking into.

17. "Clockwork Angel" by Cassandra Clare

Cassandra Clare made a big impact with her fiction debut series, The Mortal Instruments.

Now, she's getting ready to shake things up again in August with the release of the first book in the Infernal Devices series, Clockwork Angel.

Summary
Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

20. "Stripped" by Marcia Colette

Stripped, by Marcia Colette, came out in print on June 1st but I just recently discovered it. Werewolf hybrid, Alexa Wells, was first introduced in Half Breed. Stripped is a prequel that shows Alexa fighting to restore her identity while coming to terms with the fact that she's not entirely human.

I haven't read either book yet, but anticipating some good reading from an author who's tag-line is "Embracing the creepier side of writing".

Stripped (read excerpt)
Someone wants their perfect weapon back, only she’s not coming quietly.

Alexa Wells wants her life back. She’s just not sure what that life was. The memories inside her head—a stripper’s—aren’t hers, and before she humiliates herself onstage one more time, she sets out to collect the scattered pieces of her mind. The trail leads to Boston, charges of identity theft and murder, and the real bombshell: a forgotten werewolf lover who insists she’s a werewolf hybrid.

Matt York doesn’t care that she looks at him like he’s been smoking crack between court cases. Now that he has her back he’s not about to let her go it alone, even if she can easily kick ass and take names all by herself. Amnesia only scratches the surface of her problems, and like it or not, she’s stuck with him.

She’s also stuck with Robert Gamboldt, a venture capitalist who’s not above murdering his way to the top. He’s not about to lose his prize possession without playing dirty. It’s a simple enough offer. Be his personal assassin, or go to jail.

With options like that, it’s enough to make a hybrid go full-blood.

Half Breed (read excerpt)
Alexa is keeping a secret from her husband and being half werewolf isn't it. After all, he's a full-blood. Despite their abnormalities, Matt and Alexa York have settled into suburbia and gone out of their way to look like the couple next door.

Unfortunately, Alexa's less domestic than she seems. Not all wives are into crossbows, bowie knives, and jaw-crushing right h

21. "Shakespeare Undead" by Lori Handeland takes a new look at the Bard

Shakespeare Undead, by Lori Handeland (Phoenix Chronicles, Nightcreature Novels) hit the shelves yesterday. It's one of the latest in the mash-up trend and looks like it could be interesting. If you've read it, let me know what you think. Worth looking into?

For those who haven't read it, but are curious about it, here's some info.

Summary
Something wicked this way comes . . . and it keeps coming and coming and coming. . .
William Shakespeare was one of history's greatest writers, a master of words with a body of work that is truly impressive . . . some may say a little too impressive for a single man to accomplish in one lifetime. Perhaps, as many have speculated, he had assistance. Or perhaps the explanation is more . . . unusual.

Who was William Shakespeare?

Who was the Dark Lady of the Sonnets?

Why are the undead stalking the alleyways of London?

And can they be stopped?

Something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark.

So brace yourself for a wild ride through twisted streets and shadowed graveyards of Elizabethan London, where you'll discover how the Bard got his Bite.
