2. SEEDS OF A NOVEL

….continuing the conversation on how stories ignite from a spark of intuition…

“I had an especially mean group of students one year,” says author Carrie Gordon Watson, reflecting on the inception of her young adult novel Quad, a fascinating psychological thriller about a school shooting. “These students were particularly nasty to one certain boy in class. I tried stepping in; calling the kids out on their behavior, but all my attempts at intervention fell flat.

“Then one day, they rose to a new level of cruelty and I worried about what could happen if left unchecked. So I sent the boy out of class, and gave the rest of the students a dressing down, and their response was to laugh hysterically.

"I went home that night wondering what would happen to a kid who got pushed to his limit—and what might happen if he got pushed one step beyond that? The result was Quad.”

In Quad, Watson not only nails the young adult voice and her multiple narrators, but she nails her pacing, too. Using parallel tales, the story reveals as much about human nature as it does about the unspeakable acts we are sometimes capable of. It's an important story, one that needed to be told.

Just a thought for today. It takes courage to breathe life into our convictions, and trust the small moments that hold large things. <
