Twihards around the world will watch The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 this weekend. In the latest installment of the blockbuster series, fans can expect to see a dramatic vampire wedding and eventful honeymoon.
We caught up with screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to talk about writing scripts and the adaptation process. The highlights follow below…
Q: Describe the writing process when you are charged with adapting a book for a script versus writing an original script.
A: Each comes with its own challenges, but nothing is more difficult than starting with a blank page, as a writer does with an original project. I had the good fortune to start with an already fully fleshed out universe and mythology. But an adaptation comes with its own challenges: Honing a 500 page novel into a 110 page script. Externalizing very internal character arcs. Not pissing off the millions of fans around the world who don’t understand, or frankly care, that a book and a movie are very different animals, and that one can’t simply transfer the entire text into screenplay format and shoot it.

Over the next several months, you are going to see me talking a lot about some other authors I am affiliated with through Trestle Press.
These authors come from many different genres, but they all have one thing in common: We want you to read and enjoy what you are reading!
I think what I'll do is give you a nice overview of several authors here. Then for the rest of the week, I will get in depth through some of my different social sites.
Without further ado:
Robert Ford is the author of The World of Hek, a supernatural series, and Curse of the Translucent Monster.
Wenona Hulsey offers paranormal YA with Burden of Blood.
Sam Lang, another horror author, has the Reprisal series and looks to be starting a zombie collaboration called Severed.
S. L. Schmitz breathes new life into Bram Stoker's Dracula with Mina's Daughter, a steampunk series.
These are the authors and that was only a sampling of what they offer. Watch for more posts and tidbits all week.

Wordle is a fun web tool that allows people to make artistic text collages or “word clouds” from any text.
Here’s more from the site: “Wordle is a toy for generating ‘word clouds’ from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.”
This GalleyCat contributor took eBookNewser’s “Free eBook of the Day” (Rudyard Kipling‘s The Jungle Book) and created a word cloud–the image is embedded above. Other literary projects on Wordle include the U.S. Constitution, John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and Stephenie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn.

Meyer's BREAKING DAWN...
... is CRACKING ME UP and GROSSING ME OUT.
I'm halfway through, laughing out loud in some parts. Is this a comedy?! A bad one, if that!!! It is stunningly in its ludicrous dialogue and gratuitously bloody scenes.
I'm making notes on the parts about the Quileute's and the "treaty" between the vampires and the Quileute's --- there's interesting things to note about that, but my gosh!!! It is so..... STUPID.
Stop reading this if you're worried about spoilers.
During the birth, Bella vomits a fountain of blood. Jacob's nickname for the "little monster" is Nessie. Bella is furious that he nicknamed her after the Loch Ness Monster.
I am so glad I did not pay full price for this book. It's a joke! I know her readers were disappointed. I'll have to see why once I finish the book.

I've been avoiding writing about Breaking Dawn because I was REALLY REALLY trying to think of something nice to say. Well, I don't have anything nice to say. Icky Icky Poo Poo.
Luckily, Elizabeth Hand is more mature than me and summed up the series, along with a review of Breaking Dawn in The Washington Post. Warning...it contains spoilers, so don't read her review if you want to suffer through the torture of reading Breaking Dawn on your own. I wholeheartedly agree with her, especially when she says, "The most devoted readers will no doubt try to make excuses for this botched novel, but Meyer has put a stake through the heart of her own beloved creation."
Alright, devoted readers. What's your excuse?

I love it when a book gets people excited about reading. Breaking Dawn and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series has done that, similarly the way Rowling’s Harry Potter has, only for teens. Adults, too. Breaking Dawn was released on Saturday at midnight, and there were celebrations and creative release parties around the country.
Wynter Holden reported in the Phoenix New Times blog about a Breaking Dawn event at the Changing Hands Bookstore: “The room pulses with energy. The evening’s long-awaited final act begins exactly as the clock chimes 12. The crowd erupts in a climax of a scream, and I’m caught in a torrent of sweaty young bodies elbowing towards the stage at the back of the room.” Then, at the end of the night, “As I’m walking to my car at 12:20 a.m., I spot a van full of kids with flashlights and open books. To my left, there’s a woman my age in a silver Toyota — motor running, air-conditioning on full blast — furiously scanning the first few pages.”
Changing Hands Bookstore had some great ideas for the release of the book, including readers making themed t-shirts, getting sequined love bites on their necks, and a blood drive. That sounds like fun to me–fun, and great book promotion.
I love that a book created such excitement in readers. Whether or not you like the Twilight series, I hope you agree that it’s created a good thing, getting many people caring about a book so intensely.
New York Times quoted teen Katie Herzer, as saying, “We got really sad when Harry Potter was over. It’s great to find a new series we can read and maybe grow old with.” And there is the passion and excitement for a book that thrills me.
Breaking Dawn sold more than 1.3 million copies in just one day–August 2, the release day. Wow!
I loved Twilight, though I couldn’t get into the second book. I’ll try again. Either way, I’m happy there are so many excited readers out there–especially teen readers. That’s a good thing.

I had totally planned on going to a Breaking Dawn party last night, but after storms and a power outage, I couldn't make it. So, I finally got out the door around 1pm today and hurried over to Books a Million. The beautiful BD display rack was...empty. Yeah. Not one copy anywhere. People were asking the sales girls and guys, "Where is BD? Do you have one in the back room?" Of course, the answer was no. Behind the counter, was a stack of probably twenty glorious copies with a big sign for VOUCHERS ONLY. Curses!!
I whined, moped and stomped around the store. I moodily browsed the YA section and was temporarily happy when I saw so many books of friends. Yay, guys! Okay, in all honesty, I was browsing the aisle just in case BD had been shelved. But yeah, you know the answer to that question.
I was about to leave and go home to sulk when I decided to go where Take the Reins will be shelved next year. On the shelf where the books for authors with the last name starting with "D," I saw something that made me gasp. A shiny, beautiful copy of BREAKING DAWN! OMG!
I grabbed it before anyone else could find it and wrapped my arms around it! The check out girl was almost as excited as I was since she told me after last night's party and people lined up all night, there were supposed to be no copies anywhere in the store. She made her I had BD stickers and an awesome BD pin before practically ushering me out of the store.
I'm glad I wasn't driving home because the "Don't read and drive" warning might not have been enough. :)
So, I'm on page 300 or so and am going to read all weekend. I am a happy girl.
If you post here, please, no spoilers! Thank you! :)

This morning we posted an original article by Jeffrey Abugel, co-author with Daphne Simeon, MD, of Feeling Unreal: Depersonalization Disorder and the Loss of the Self. This afternoon we have an excerpt from their book which will hopefully help you better understand Depersonalization Disorder. Below is Trisha’s story, just one of many varied experiences with Depersonalization Disorder.
Trisha was a 21-year-old college junior majoring in fine arts at a large state university. She was bright, attractive, ambitious, and sociable. She describes her upbringing as happy and uneventful. She was the second of four children raised in a small Midwestern town, and her parents were still happily married. She got along well with both of them and was particularly close to her sister Jane, who was 2 years younger. Trisha always did well in school, was athletic, and had many friends. (more…)

Earlier today we had a post from the other side of the ocean about their new smoking ban. In keeping with the smoking theme, we have Mitch Earleywine author of Pot Politics, Mind-Altering Drugs and Understanding Marijuana writing for us today. While we don’t endorse the use of illegal substances we do think Earleywine’s point is important, that there are ways less harmful than smoking to use marijuana. Earleywine, an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University at Albany, State University of New York has also worked for 14 years on the faculty at the University of Southern California. He is a leading researcher in psychology and addictions. To learn more keep reading.
Arguments about recreational and medical use of marijuana often turn to discussions about the health of the lungs. Inhaling particles, toxic gases, and heat is never a great idea, but people who smoke marijuana (but not cigarettes) rarely experience serious lung problems. Theoretically, however, the potential for marijuana-induced pulmonary troubles seems high. As public service announcements consistently remind Americans, the smoke from the tobacco and marijuana plants are very comparable. Some carcinogens and irritants are more concentrated in marijuana smoke than tobacco smoke. In addition, many marijuana users inhale the smoke deeply and hold their hits for long durations, giving tars and other toxins a greater chance to deposit on lung tissue (For reviews, see Earleywine, 2005; Iversen, 2000). (more…)
I didn't love or hate it. I was in between. I liked having the conclusion but it seemed overly drawn out and it was just so out of place that part of the book was from Jacobs perspective. I mean I understand why, but still. I just don't know. Its the only book in the series I haven't read more than once.
I'm very forgiving of the 4th bk/movie since I predicted the whole Jacob/BabyThing deal. I just got home from the midnight show! As always I liked the funny bits--love Seth & Leah. I even liked those animations they thrown in to illustrate the whole venom-conversion process. Much more entertaining than watching KS squint at people. GREAT soundtrack. Hubby's going to cringe but I'm going to make him buy it on his iTunes acct :D
I love them all. I've really enjoyed the human/vamp romance. Even though the books are for teens, as a mother of 4, it's nice to get away from the norm.
I love the series! I saw the movie last night and loved it! I will be the first to admit that the story in Breaking Dawn is absolutely ridiculous, but its Stephenie Meyer's story and only she can decide what happens! I love the world she has created! Wish it was real!
Twilight and Breaking Dawn were my favorite books of the series. Unfortunately they were not the best of the movies. Twilight was horrendous and Breaking Dawn had some pretty corny parts. I will always them for reawakening my love of reading though!
Breaking dawn was my least favorite book in the series, It was okay in some parts and bad in some other parts. I thought the movie was better than the book.
I'm kind of in the middle. I mean I'm not a crazy fan, but I'm don't hate it either. I would really love to hear the soundtrack :) Thanks for the chance to win!
I have not watched any of the moves, just read the books. Breaking Dawn seemed to me like the book was rushed. Like the author decided the series would only have 4 books so she finished the plot in chunks. If the story had been fleshed out like the first three it would have been a good pair of books. It is not my favorite book, but it is far from my least favorite.
I loved it! There were a few parts I could have done without but overall I was pleased. The wedding and honeymoon was great and I liked the way they let Jacob have a happy ending. It made sense to me even though there was so many people that hated it. My fave part of the whole series was the ending when Edward got to hear what she was thinking. Perfect ending for me!

Well, if your talking about the book then I actually really liked it. I liked it more than the rest actually. I think it's because I love Renesmee. I'm a mother so maybe that's plays more into my interest lol and it felt that it was more lively than the other books. More action and drama, I wasn't bored at all. But if you're talking about the movie, sadly I haven't gone to watch it yet. Hopefully I'll get to this weekend. =) I'm trying hard to avoid any post that has reviews or details on the movie so I don't get spoilers =D
Thank you for hosting this giveaway!!
Happy Readings and have a great weekend!!

Not my favorite of the four (or five? or five-and-a-half?) -- but they're ALL my favorite when the mood strikes!
Why would anyone hate Breaking Dawn? Sure it was originally a very long sequel written just for Stephenie's sister but Forever Dawn became more than borderline fan fiction. Whether or not you like Renesmee etc seeing Bella as a vampire and getting that first hand experience is cool. Also getting the story told by Jacob actually made me like him more. (Team Edward)
@Kim It's very divisive :) Just check out this infographic from Goodreads:

I didn't hate this book, but I certainly didn't love it! I did not like the baby, she is cute in all, but I just didn't like her. Also what was with the end? I thought there was going to be this big war, but no. I thought it was a boring book, worst of the series in my opinion!
I read and loved Breaking Dawn. I loved all of the Twilight Saga series, but BD is my favorite because it has the most action starting with the long awaited wedding, pregnancy etc... I can't wait to see the movie I will wait impatiently for hopefully no longer than 2 weeks so that the lines aren't as long as I know they are right now.

I loved the first and second book, the last wasn't my favourite, but it was nice. I don't hate the story- I'm a sucker for love stories and I'm not afraid to show it :3
I didn't love it or hate it but compared to the other three books in the series it was my least favorite. It was all just really depressing and I didn't care for Jacobs point of view either. I'm still planning on going to the movies to watch it though but i'm not in a rush to.
My favorite book is Eclipse in the series. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm going to soon.

Breaking Dawn isn't bad but its definitely not my favorite of the books. I've only read it once, while all the other ones ive read at least 5 times and the first one way more than that. I'm still going to go see the movie though.
awesome giveaway! I thought the movie was the best so far!:))
I LOVED the movie! Stuck right close to the book. The best yet! I didnt like Carlisle's hair. The wolf speak was a neat idea, but came across as OFF. Like 1980s superhero cartoon OFF. I want to see it again! Cant wait til #2!!!
We went to the Midnight Premier...there was at least 1,000 people there. It was cold and raining, thunder and lightning, windy and we had to wait 2 hours in line even though we pre-purchased our tickets. We laughed and cried, and even though we KNEW what was going to happen, it was worth every second. They told us it was 2 1/2 hours long, but it only seemed like 20 mins. IT WAS SO GOOD!
I liked Breaking Dawn part 1 but the book was sooo much better I feel they left to much out of the film I wont say what so I dont spoil.anything but if you've read the books you'll be able tell
I loved the movie! I thought they did a really nice job on it because it followed the book fairly well, it was funny and just so much fun!
I remember coming home right after picking up my copy of breaking dawn & start reading it. I was planning to not sleep the whole night. But it was probably around 3 in the morning when I just had to put it down cause I couldn't believe what was happening. I thought it was ridiculous at the time haha but now I'm just eh about it.
Well I kind of hated it I even stop reading it and never finished I thought it was a horrible wrap up!!!
LOVED IT. I didn't start reading the series until it was almost complete so I read it after everyone else did but I couldn't put this one down.
oooooooh Alethea and gang, you don't even want to know what the LA Twilight Lovers group have been doing this month for BD. TEAM JACOB FOR LIFE!!!!
Now I want to know, Sophia! Um, team Edward for me. No idea what team alethea is on. Must find out.
I am Team Wolf!!! Tell us or at least leave a link :)
It wasn't really my favorite book, but I didn't hate it either, and the movie was my favorite by far! I just love the way it was done and can't wait to see the second one! I liked the book because everybody got their happy ending. :) Yeah, it was WEIRD, but that's what creativity is for! This is an excellent giveaway, I'm going to follow your blog!
