2. 31 Days of Halloween: EC Comics on sale at Comixology

B1OVCwMCcAADNtQ 31 Days of Halloween: EC Comics on sale at Comixology

You can’t spell “horror comics” without EC—these finely drawn masterpieces of the macabre set a standard for illustrated chills that were so unsettling, they nearly got the whole comics industry shut down.

Fantagraphics has been reprinting the EC comics in handsome books devoted to various artists, including the late great Al Feldstein, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, Graham Ingels and John Severin. And they are on sale from Comixology until 11 pm tomorrow night.  Each book is only $10.99, and pound for pound this could be the best back for your horror buck possible.

You may have seen the stories excerpted here there and everywhere, but if you’ve never experienced these tales in quantity, this is a fine jumping on point. And shhhhhh, Harvey Kurtzman’s great war comics are also on sale.

3. Must Read: The Literaries

If you read only one think piece on comics by a great cartoonist today, you should read The Literaries by Eddie Campbell. The piece spins off of the current discussion on the place of EC comics which I mentioned the other day. Campbell's response is specifically to Ng Suat Tong's declaration that EC comics were mostly well-drawn pulp.

4. Weird and Creeepy Shopping List

As promised, I bring you a small shopping list for the weird reader on your list. (click on the images for purchasing info)

Yes, it may seem a little self-serving (being a Strange Publications book and all), but Cate's collection is wonderful. Check out www.strangemeninpinstripesuits.com and read the reviews.

I'm a big fan of just about everything Kim Paffenroth has written. If you haven't taken a peek at Valley of the Dead yet, you should grab a copy (or buy two and send one to a loved one). Smart horror, folks.

When I was seven, my sister gave me one of the best gifts she could: a subscription to the Star Wars comic book (then produced by Marvel). How about giving that fantasy lover a subscription to a nice small press mag like Shimmer?

Or, for the horror fan on your list, a subscription to Necrotic Tissue, a magazine which never fails to entertain.

Okay, so some people like poetry. Some people like their poetry weird (and somewhat dark). Stuff A Mouth for Picket Fences by Barry Napier in their stocking.

5. Halloween Books Part Nine: Tales From The Crypt/The Vault Of Horror

The E.C. horror comics are my favorite horror comics. The tone, the twist endings, the amazing, grisly art all add up to something really special. Great Halloween reading. They are also just some of the funnest comics ever drawn. If you can try and find copies with colouring by Mary Severin, they were recoloured digitally in the 1990's with pretty awful results.

The history of these comics is also really interesting reading.

You can start looking for these on Amazon here.

6. Comics: Shock Suspenstories EC Archives

EC Archives: Shock Suspenstories Volume 1 (The Ec Archives)

Even more daring and dark then some of their other collections. Surprised at the "preachies" as well, pretty open minded stuff for the times. Artwork is top notch too. I really wish I could get the whole series.
