Why does Warners always feel the need to tweak Flash’s costume to the point of being unrecognizable? It’s such an iconic costume on its own and doesn’t need much done to it. I actually like everyone else’s though.

I hope Justice League is a better movie, for sure, but there’s a lot that’s disingenuous here. Snyder was pushing for an R rating, so there is no shock that his Superman movie was no good for 8 year olds.

Honestly, my real hope was that he was banished from touching anything with a cultural value. Let him make his own crap R rated films.

If he proves he understands grown up feelings, we can take the baby out of the corner.

The fact that Snyder can’t properly articulate what lessons were learned by BvS is a bad sign.

So… how is a PG-13 movie suitable for an 8-year-old?

Thankfully, DC is releasing a DC Super Hero Girls DVD this summer…

That’s the wrong question to ask given the history of the characters and property. The right question WB should have asked prior to release is: “How is a PG-13 movie (much less an R) suitable for Superman and that character’s audience?” In seeking the answer, the reaction and movie’s performance would have not been a surprise.

Snyder’s kind of a lost cause. This whole debacle has moved his work from harmless schlock to avoid-at-all-costs.

This is probably a true statement from Snyder. He may very well love the characters but not as an adult loves the joys of his or her youth. He loves them with the perverse fixation of the overgrown adolescent who never developed emotionally beyond thinking how cool it would be if Superman fried somebody’s eyeballs with his Heat Vision.

isn’t he too young to play Supergirl’s man of steel? I only watched a few episodes but hasn’t he already reached adulthood and been superman for years when Kara shows up as a 12 year old?

Hopefully, Affleck will be in at least three more films, counting that possible solo movie. He arguably has provided the best live-action portrayal of both Batman and Bruce Wayne that we have seen to date.

I finally saw it, and it’s OK. Not a great movie, but not awful either. I thought it was a better movie than Man of Steel or The Dark Knight Rises (two movies I really disliked). There were things in B v S I disliked — starting with Henry Cavill’s glum, downbeat Superman, who seems to view helping mankind as an unpleasant burden — but these things I liked:

1. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. As you’ve probably heard, she steals every scene she’s in. Bring on the WW solo movie! Gadot doesn’t have a lot of dialogue, but she’s so visually striking it doesn’t matter. (She looks a bit like Angelina Jolie, who probably would have played the role a decade ago.)

2. Ben Affleck’s middle-aged, melancholy Batman. He’s pretty much perfect.

3. Seeing Bill Finger FINALLY credited as Batman’s co-creator — even though the credit makes him look like Bob Kane’s assistant. (“Batman created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger.”) But at least he finally got a credit. God knows how much legal red tape had to be untangled for this to happen.

I’ll probably think of other things to praise later, but these were the first 3 things that came to mind.

The criticism of this movie is out of control. It’s actually pretty decent.

Critics be damned! Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was great fun. I loved the Dark Knight Returns references from the comic book as well as those from the Doomsday comics. Yes, it’s over the top, but what do you expect? I didn’t have high hopes for this one, but they truly delivered. And Diana, Wonder Woman, kicked ass!

The criticisms will likely only affect the movies staying power. The Hollywood Reporter indicated that more than 66 percent of ticket buyers were white, male and between the ages of 18-34. Only 6 percent were above the age of 44 and 3 percent over the age of 55.

This was DC’s largest salvo, opening everywhere at the same time (including China) on a holiday weekend and the first big blockbuster of the year with no competition.

I’m seeing fanboys talking about going 2, 3, sometimes 4 times during the weekend. That won’t keep up. That 29% RT rating, and other similar critical scores will likely eventually catch up with it.

Agreed, they’ve also adjusted down, so the final tally is actually 166.1 million. Friday to Sunday was a huge drop-off.

Haven’t you heard that Marvel paid critics to pan this movie? That’s what fanboys are tweeting. They can’t imagine anyone honestly disliking any superhero movie. Fanboys don’t seem to have much contact with people outside their own bubble.

At least this is a switch from the usual fanboy position, which is that critics PRETEND to dislike superhero movies in order to impress their “hip” friends.

Film critic Matt Singer put it best, when he tweeted that “superhero fatigue” doesn’t mean critics think there should be fewer superhero movies. It means they want BETTER and MORE VARIED superhero movies.

Sounds like the demographics of DC’s readership! No wonder their sales are in the toilet, with such a narrow range of people buying their comics.

Batman v. Superman has its problems, like Cavil being a complete and utter dud, but it’s far better than a true disaster like Green Lantern. It does seem like there’s a bit of piling on here.

It’s adult superhero movie every parent or adult people should reconsider themselves if they want to bring their children to watch this movie. Event for adult people themselves, it is uneasy to digest the messed up plot and story particularly for the casual viewers. It is inaccessible to them, they might don’t really understand some specific things, such as the opening movie scene that showed the closing moment of Man of Steal movie from Bruce Wayne’s perspective, the idea of the omega symbol during Bruce Wayne’s dream sequence which is a symbol of Darkseid. The one that explained by Lex Luthor in the end of the movie.

NICE FINALLY GET TO SEE SOME PENISES

I’ve read that SUICIDE SQUAD may be released with an R rating. So may the future Batman films with Ben Affleck. Hollywood’s takeaway from DEADPOOL, it seems, is that superhero movies don’t always have to be PG-13.

Batman vs. Superman will probably open at Number One, as most superhero movies do (except maybe Ant-Man). If it quickly fades — or, worse, fails to take the top box-office spot — heads will likely roll at Warners.

With all the speculation over B vs S, little attention is being paid to Captain America: Civil Wars, which opens two months later. I haven’t seen much enthusiasm for this movie, except among the most hardcore superhero geeks. A lot of people were disappointed in the Avengers sequel (which quickly faded), and Civil Wars looks like more of the same.

Marvel took a small, but real hit last year in the lessened box office for Age of Ultron (which admittedly, it’s a hard hill to climb to best the first film’s gross) and Ant-Man, which just barely was able to squeak past Captain America: The First Avenger on some relatively decent legs.

Civil War has quite a few elements in its favor, Iron Man and the new Spider-Man namely. But weirdly, Marvel still hasn’t really played that card on the latter. That may be the final marketing push is my guess.

For what it’s worth, the schedule benefits Batman v Superman more, as Civil War has an X-Men movie right on its heels towards the end of May.

Interesting article from L.A. Review of Books arguing that comics’ “dark and gritty” era began not in the 1980s with Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns, but in the 1970s. That’s when Batman went back to being a grim avenger, and violent antiheroes like Wolverine and the Punisher were introduced — all of them influenced by movie characters played by Clint Eastwood and Charles Bronson.

Spider-Man failing to save his girlfriend’s life (in 1973) was also pretty dark.

Interesting. 11 minutes is how long a number of their shows run – Adventure Time, Teen Titans Go, Steven Universe (I think) – it seems like that’s Cartoon Network’s standard unit of programming these days.

Here’s hoping that Aquaman appears on the show, is voiced by John DiMaggio, and says “Outrageous!” If they get the best version of Aquaman to ever appear in any media ever on the show then I’ll be happy…

@JC Lebourdais: A typical Bugs Bunny cartoon is 6-10 minutes. Short cartoons are not a new development, and neither does a short running time mean that a cartoon is stupid or low-quality.

I’m totally on that Jesse Eisebberg-as-Lex island with you! I wish he looked like Lex, but he’s such a great actor, and that’s what makes movie characters memorable.

If by the end of the film Lex is bald, I’m totally OK with this casting. Doing Luthor without hair loss, is like doing Superman without flights, fights and tights.

Supes and Bats look like shit. But Wonder Woman and Lex are promising. At this point ANYTHING good about this version is a surprise so I’ll take it.

Did they really need to spoil everything about Doomsday being in this? Dead Zod, then Doomsday! Coinkydink! Christ on a krampus just show Lex in the lab coat looking down at something. Cut away, have a roar, worried Bats and Sups.. Boom, fucking intrigue! Its amateur hour over in the WB marketing department.

I’m on board. Lex looks fantastic. The whole thing looks great, and praise god, there are a few jokes in it. It doesn’t take itself too seriously!

The funny thing about Supergirl is that I still see it being heralded as a breakout success by critics. I don’t disagree, but it’s interesting to see that a CBS show that pulls less than 10 million is heralded as such whereas a show in the same position in 2007 would have been quickly edging towards cancellation.

I’ve had a lot of fun with Supergirl so far. I think the writing is still trite at times, and it overexplains and reiterates points in a way that only network series do, but overall it’s been an enjoyable ride.

I guess it’s a sign of my age, but this is pretty much the only superhero tv show I watch. I appreciate that they’ve gone the opposite direction of the other shows by remaining bright and sunny for the most part (matched by the cinematography). At times the individual stories and villains can come off a bit pedestrian, but the show has a lot of heart and there’s always a scene or two that really hits it out of the ballpark emotionally. The show has a likable lead and supporting cast and I like the way they’ve softened Cat Grant and made her a bit more complex, rather than just made her a hardass boss. The series’ love triangle(s) also makes it work. And they’ve done a good job of including some interesting subplots that will likely pay off later down the line. With most of the other shows trying to be dark and gritty, I think this show is a breath of fresh air; it’s got more of a YA feel.

I don’t think there’s a multiplex big enough to beat 32 simultaneous screenings. For some time, the largest number of screens under one roof was 20, at Grand Rapids Michigan’s Studio 28 (so-named because of it’s location on 28th Street). This was at the height of the multiplex craze in the 1990s, when more was always better, before cinema attendance started to drop off. (There was talk of expanding to 28 screens – because obvious – but it never happened… and Studio 28 is now just a really big parking lot.) There’s probably a few bigger plexes out there somewhere, but I doubt anyone’s built one that much larger.

Yes… I did some basic research, and there doesn’t seem to be a 32-plex.

AMC does have the Empire 25 in Times Square. Many of the theaters on the top floor are smaller theaters, usually used for screenings and foreign films.

With regard to the 7/8/2016 date, noted as “??? (Was Doctor Strange)”: I believe that’s now held for the Ant-Man sequel, “ANT-MAN AND THE WASP,” the addition of which pushed the BLACK PANTHER and CAPTAIN MARVEL movies to these later-than-originally-announced dates.

The Ant-Man sequel is for July 2018, not 2016! To the extent that the 7/8/2016 date may be a hole to be filled in the schedule, I’m not sure if any “nerd-friendly” flick will move to fill the space vacated by DOCTOR STRANGE, or if folks will cede July to things like GHOSTBUSTERS and STAR TREK that have staked out spaces later in that month.

I can’t help but feel Affleck is squandering his talents as he pursues the big bucks of a comic-book franchise. Did he learn nothing from DAREDEVIL? Mark Harris put it best in an article in August:

“Last week brought the dispiriting news that Ben Affleck, who pretty much had his pick of projects after Argo, has, for the second time, postponed his adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel Live by Night. When the adaptation was first announced almost three years ago, it felt like an ideal project for him — a rematch with a novelist, a milieu, and a genre for which he has a real feel. But the film, once scheduled to open this December, and then moved to October 2016, is now slated for “2017.”

“Let’s keep that date in quotes, because Affleck is now going to follow Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with The Justice League Part One and then, apparently, a standalone Batman movie, after which one imagines he will show up for The Justice League Part Two and perhaps another couple of Batman films since everything is a trilogy now. That plan — let’s call it the Full Downey — would, by my calculations, keep him in the cowl and cape until sometime around his 50th birthday in 2022, a strange turn of events for an actor I thought had been cured of this particular hunger after emerging sadder but wiser from Daredevil a dozen years back.

I do wonder what the impetus was for Affleck to sign on the dotted line. Presumably money, but has playing Batman been something he’s always wanted to do? Was it a matter of “I’ll do it so long as I have as much creative control as I want” thus the Terrio hiring right after his casting announcement? A year later and I still haven’t really wrapped my head around it.

On the other hand, his Batman looks pretty great, and I’m betting he’ll be the best thing about the movie (he or Eisenberg).

I’m reserving judgment on Affleck’s Batman until I see the movie. I’m old enough to remember the outrage when Michael Keaton was cast in the role. Of course, when the 1989 movie came out, almost everyone thought Keaton was perfect.

BTW, I thought Affleck deserved an Oscar nomination for his George Reeves in HOLLYWOODLAND.
