Wow. Here's a fantastic blog I haven't seen before.
The Art Department. Take a look at the origami Christmas tree at the Museum of National History. I'm hoping it is still up. I can't believe I missed seeing that.

Hola desde Nueva York! Greetings from New York City!
Book Expo America began today. It was with great pleasure that I attended the 9th Annual International Latino Book Awards this evening. The awards ceremony was simultaneously broadcast live on the Latino Book and Family Festival website. Que cool, no? Edward James Olmos welcomed attendees via video. I met new people and ran into old friends like Ruben Martinez who had the honor of presenting the Mariposa Awards for Best First Book.
I'm told that this year there was a 50% increase in entries from last year and that this year there were more categories. The list of winners is extensive and our own Lisa Alvarado's book Sister Chicas won the second place Mariposa Award for Best First book. Congratulations Lisa and all the winners!

Sol is in New York for Book Expo America - Chicano style. I'll be attending the Latino Book Awards, panels on Latino publishing and the launch party of LIP (Latinos in Publishing). Keep trucha for sneaky additions to the ends of other peoples posts (OPP) with news and views from the convention floor. It's like a treasure hunt.
Currently, it's 11pmish (closer to midnight) and I'm at a friend's apartment on the 10th floor typing on the balcony that overlooks the city. Superpadrissimo!
If you're a Chicano or Latino in publishing or an author or algo and attending the conferencia, send me an email and we'll meet up.
Meanwhile, enjoy all the posting from my comadre and compadritos and watch for those OPPs. If I can figure out my new camera, there will be fotos tambien.
thanks, Sol, for all the hard work teclando these awards. It's interesting to note the Cato book got an honorable then a best in a different category, and Allende got a best in English, but a 2d in Spanish.
Sol -- I KNEW you would be in the audience! It's great to get this update and thanks for listing all the winners....BTW -- anyone reading this should run, not walk to get Pat Mora's Adobe Odes. Beautiful, beautiful work by a master.

Sol, thank you for posting the list of winners. I heard that I won first place in the Mariposa category (Best First Book/English)but this is the first time I've seen it in writing, so thanks!!
What a great list of books, and what an honor to be on ANY list that includes Isabel Allende. As I scanned the titles, I was pleased to see that I already own most of these books in English, have read them or am planning on it. The Spanish ones and the ones that are new to me I will order immediately!
Some of the winners I've had the pleasure of meeting personally, such as Eduardo Santiago, who I did a reading with at the Miami Book Fair last November. What an amazing reader! He's so animated and entertaining, I learned so much by watching him.
Congrats to all the winners!
