1. Joey and the Birthday Present

Joey and the Birthday Present
By Maxine Kumin and Anne Sexton
Illustrations by Evaline Ness
McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1971

Today's vintage children's book is Joey and the Birthday Present. Love the illustrations by Evaline Ness, the more of her work I see, the more I like her. Ness's work seems effortless, but I'm sure it wasn't. It just looks like she had a lot of fun doing it. Ness has some nice compositions in this book, like the kitchen or the family with the dalmation. I think that is one thing she was very good at, besides being a talented artist. An interesting aside about Evaline Ness, she was married for awhile to FBI agent Elliot Ness, who was the inspiration for the movie The Untouchables.

3. Good Book Cover Design

First impressions do count. A good book cover design can make you pick up a book to explore it contents. To me, a book cover should capture some of the essence of the book and give you a taste of what's inside. Ever been lured by a great book cover only to find the inside of the book is disappointing? Not good.

Here are ten book covers that I think are very nice. Please let me know if you like this posting about book covers, I'm thinking about making it a weekly thing.

4. Evaline Ness Collection Auction

Have you ever heard of Evaline Ness? She was an illustrator of many children’s books during the mid-20th century period. At a time when most illustration was still being done in a style of literal realism, Ness was among that group of stylistic pioneers whose work still influences the look of illustration today.

She also has the unusual distinction of having been married for a time to the famous FBI agent, Elliot Ness.

The Bloombury Auction House in New York has an upcoming auction featuring a collection of children’s books signed by Evaline Ness, her Caldecott medal for Sam, Bangs and Moonshine and some never before seen sketchbooks and dummies all of which come from her family collection.

The sale will take place at Bloomsbury Auctions New York on Wednesday, December 9th, but those who won’t be able to attend can view nearly a dozen pieces from the Ness collection in my Evaline Ness Flickr set.
