1. CAF update: APE and Short Run get dates; ELCAF gets a day and Lineworks NW gets guests

ape CAF update: APE and Short Run get dates; ELCAF gets a day and Lineworks NW gets guests

Whew the comics arts festival circuit news is flowing thick and fast; we’re in the middle of application season and hearts and minds are turning to tabling. And the CAFs are answering back with news.

§ First off, the revamped APE (Alternative Press Expo) has revealed its dates and location: October 3-4 2015 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose. This is by all accounts a fine spot for a show, and the new San Jose-based APE sounds like its off to a good start. There is a one day overlap with CXC in Columbus, but what are ya gonna do—even the CAF circuit is busting out these days.

SRlogoBig600 CAF update: APE and Short Run get dates; ELCAF gets a day and Lineworks NW gets guests

§ Short Run, the indie themed event held in Seattle, has announced its dates: Saturday, October 31st at the Fisher Pavilion at Seattle Center.

2015 banner CAF update: APE and Short Run get dates; ELCAF gets a day and Lineworks NW gets guests

WHAT?! That’s right: get ready for a “scary” good time with Short Run as we take over Halloween afternoon with comix, zines, art books, mask-making, experimental animation, and much more. There will be both tricks and treats with 250 exhibitors under the Space Needle.

WHERE??!! Yes, it’s true: our beloved Washington Hall will be under construction this entire year as they make much needed renovations. In 2015, we’ll be returning to Seattle Center (site of the very first Short Run festival), and this time, we’ll be in the grand, expansive Fisher Pavilion. We are excited to offer both exhibitors and attendees wider aisle space in this new venue!
WHO?… Well, stay tuned! We’ll be announcing our 2015 special guests soon, as well as opening applications for this year’s exhibitors. We had such an incredible experience with our international guests last year, that we will continue to bring comix artists from around the world to Seattle.

Sounds like a good time.

§ ELCAF (The East London Comics Festival) has announced it’s expanding to two days this year, June 20-21, at a venue to be named later. This show has been getting a strong reputation for indies and it’s doubling in size. Applications are also open. (h/t Zainab)

tumblr static 16w0pjwdaocg4ccw4w80g0w88 CAF update: APE and Short Run get dates; ELCAF gets a day and Lineworks NW gets guests

§ Finally, April’s Lineworks NW, the Portland, OR based indie fest has announced its first four guests: Daniel Clowes, Lisa Hanawalt, Lisa Congdon and Jay Howell. Clowes and Hanawalt are best known for their comics; Congdon is afire artist and Howell does animation designs for such things as Bob’s Burgers. All four have heavy multi-media portfolio, and mixing up a CAF with guests from allied arts and animation is a very smart move and probably something we’ll see a lot more of.

More CAF news coming! If you have info on a show you would like to pass long, please email The Beat at comicsbeat at gmail dot com.

3. A movement is afoot to bring a comics festival to San Francisco

1912432 795231507190472 3972315543962102795 n A movement is afoot to bring a comics festival to San Francisco

A group has formed in San Francisco to discuss bringing a comics festival to SF, currently bereft of comics event with the move of WonderCon to Anaheim and soon APE to San Jose. The group has called for a town hall meeting on Monday, October 20th:

Many of us were saddened by the news that the Alternative Press Expo will be relocated to San Jose in 2015.

San Francisco has the unique opportunity to imagine a new comics-centric festival from the ground up. Are we looking for another big hall convention with rows and rows of exhibitors? Or is SF more suited to host a multi-venue festival of comics? From tech to tradition, how can we leverage San Francisco’s strengths as a city to continue to make it a destination for comics professionals and enthusiasts alike?

Please join us for a town hall meeting to discuss the possibilities, challenges, and realities of establishing a new and exciting comics festival here in San Francisco.

Comics retailers, artists, writers, and industry professionals are all welcome to participate in this important discussion.

Directions to Timken Lecture Hall, 1111 8th Street, San Francisco:

https://www.cca.edu/about/directions

The meeting was formed by The California College of the Arts which offers an MFA n comics. The main organizer seems to be Matt Silady. and listed as attending are a bunch of Bay Area comics mainstays.

Without much knowledge of the local scene, the main factor would seem to be costs, as usual, as SF is currently one of the most expensive places in the US. Of course it is also one of the birthplaces of world comics culture, and still home to a few doughty souls who make a living in the funnies, and as well as some of the best known comics shops. Image Comics is nearby. There is certainly a vibrant scene there. Is there room for another CAF on the scene? Show up Monday to help find out.

4. APE ownership to return to Dan Vado and San Jose

toucan ape2014 programbookcover 0 201x300 APE ownership to return to Dan Vado and San Jose There’s been a bunch of scuttlebutt going on around APE, the Alternative Press Expo now unfolding in San Francisco, and it is being announced today that CCI, which runs APE, the San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon is returning ownership of the show to founder Dan Vado starting next year. Vado founded the show in his home base of San Jose in 1994 as part of the then-burgeoning scene of indie comics events that included the Small Press Expo in Bethesda and SPACE in Columbus. CCI took it over in 1995, eventually moving it to San Francisco.  Vado has been mostly uninvolved with the show in recent years, while expanding SLG, his comics company, to a storefront and event space. And of course, CAFs have blown up everywhere, with TCAF, SPX, MoCCA, CAB, MeCAF, Thought Bubble, Short Run and many more showcasing the indie comics side of today’s comics world.

ape2013 guest vado APE ownership to return to Dan Vado and San Jose The Beat had a chance to speak briefly with Vado about taking the show back. He plans to move the event out of San Francisco and back to San Jose, and move it away from a date that conflicts with New York Comic Con. While he doesn’t have a venue secured yet, “My first choice is to work something out with the MLK Library here and run it in the same style as TCAF,” he told The Beat. “Mainly, free admission, lower table costs, trying to keep it as open as possible for new people.” Unlike TCAF, he doesn’t expect to run it on the curated model. However, like TCAF and MoCCA, he sees APE as expanding to a festival-like event with several venues and possibly a music festival attached.

Vado is hoping to get sponsorships from larger corporations involved, as well.

While Vado has often spoken fondly of APE in the past, taking on running a small press comics show in the middle of a boom seems like a big task. So why? “I kind of feel like I have some unfinished business with it,” he said. “APE was the first of its kind. I think it is a great show, and I’m happy to be able to continue it.

“Hopefully APE will turn into something even cooler than what it is,” he concluded.

While as we’ve reported here many times in the past, SF is the one city that doesn’t seem very interested in comics culture—despite or maybe because of being home to the dot-com culture that seems to love comics culture—it’s also home to the companies that have helped comics grow digitally such as Google and Apple. So there seems to be real potential to create a regional CAF with that taps into the unique culture of the area.

A panel is being held right now announcing the switchover.

5. Weekend Preview: APE in San Francisco

toucan ape2014 programbookcover 0 Weekend Preview: APE in San Francisco

SF’s sole remaining comics show, the Alternative Press Expo, aka APE, kicks off tomorrow at Fort Mason. Guests include Bob Fingerman, Spike, Robert Williams and Paul Pope.Programming is here.

APE is a fun show, or was when last I went in 2004, but the Bay Area’s soaring rents and general artisanal toast scarfing ‘tude seems to mitigate against the kind of indie comics spirit that the show exhibits. However, as always APE has the best program art, in this case by Faith Erin Hicks.

D&Q sent out a promo for the show: they’re signed copies of The Hospital Suite and Earthling, advances of the new Moomin book, and John Porcellino is on tour in Cali:

John Porcellino is passing through California for two days only! He’s launching his brand new graphic memoir The Hospital Suite, of which the Los Angeles Timessays: “the rawness of Porcellino’s work, its unfiltered directness, is the essence of its charm.”

Both events will consist of a reading, screening of the Root Hog or Diedocumentary about John Porcellino’s life, and a signing.

Wednesday November 19th, 6pm

Thursday November 20th, 7 pm

Malachi Ward has been building up steam in the small press comics world the last few years. His latest release, Ritual 3: Vile Decay, has been met with critical acclaim, and he continues his strong creative collaboration with writer/artist/friend Matt Sheean on their self-published title, Expansion, and Prophet from Image Comics. His earliest works, Utu & Scout, introduced his distinctive character-driven, surreal, sci-fi stories to readers, and you can find similar themes explored in his paintings, as well.

Malachi Ward was raised in Yucaipa, California, and studied drawing & painting in college. Some of his biggest influences growing up included Calvin and Hobbes, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Spider-man comics. He currently lives in South Pasadena, CA with his wife Keiko.

Malachi will be attending the San Francisco Zine Fest this coming Labor Day weekend, Small Press Expo in North Bethesda, MD on September 13th & 14th, and Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco on October 4th & 5th. His work with Matt Sheean continues in Prophet Strikefile, hitting comics shops in the next few weeks.

You can order a copy of Ritual 3: Vile Decay at the Alternative Comics website.

You can follow Malachi Ward on his tumblr site here.

7. News and notes: Poison Elves return, Table Titans, Colombian comics progress and a big sale!

Poison Elves 01 CoverB OsvaldoMontpeller News and notes: Poison Elves return, Table Titans, Colombian comics progress and a big sale!
Ape Entertainment has teamed up with the lost lost publishing house Sirius to publish an on going Poison Elves series which will lunch an adults-only imprint at the usually family-friendly Ape.

Poison Elves is the life work of the late Drew Hayes, who died in 2007. The series ran from 1991 until 2004. It’s definitely a post 80s indie comic with a rebellious protagonist and a black and white vibe. DREW HAYES’ POISON ELVES #1 comes out in march with covers by Darick Robertson, Terry Moore, and interior artist, Osvaldo Montpeller. Ape publisher David Hedgecock has more n the revival in an interview with Robot 6.

“Drew Hayes’ Poison Elves comic series was one of the biggest influences in my decision to become a comic book professional,” said David Hedgecock, CEO of Ape Entertainment. “This book is one small way for me to say ‘thank you’ to Mr. Hayes and to the legacy he left behind.”

Poison Elves is the story of Lusiphur, an elf with an attitude. Lusiphur is a thief, an assassin, a force of nature that will wipe you clean from the map if you dare to call him foe. He has a disdain for authority and lives by a moral code that others might question (and often do). He is also the reluctant key player in a grand tapestry of events that may very well decide the fate of his world and all those who live upon it.

Poison Elves was one of the most successful black-and-white “indy” comics ever produced. In his time the creator, Drew Hayes, produced over 100 issues worth of material. The book spawned trading cards, statuettes, spin-off titles and more. It was a seminal work of the ’90s, a modern-day Cerebus if you will.

tabletitans News and notes: Poison Elves return, Table Titans, Colombian comics progress and a big sale!
§ Scott Kurtz is teaming with D&D for a new webcomic which will be called Table Titans. ON his blog Kurtz wrote:

Table Titans follows the real and imagined adventures of three friends, Andrew, Alan and Valeria, in their struggle to become the world’s most legendary D&D gaming group. The comic will be presented long form via the web, and then collected into real books twice a year. This isn’t a gag-a-day like PvP. I’m giving myself the room to tell bigger stories. The strip is launching January 28th, 2013 at tabletitans.com.

When we approached Wizards with the idea of spinning Val and her gaming group into it’s own comic we thought we would get a very polite “no thank you.” But not only did WoTC say “Yes! Let’s do it.” they took it a step further and asked “What other cool things can we do together? That discussion quickly lead to the plan to premiere the Table Titans Mines of Madness D&D Next adventure at PAX East 2013. That’s right, I get to work with DM Chris Perkins to write an official D&D module based on the comics I wrote. Still can’t wrap my head around that.

¶ Some news on comics around the world from from Colombia: Matt Madden writes to say that the laws of that country have been changed so that comics are no longer classified as “non-cultural” material alongside horoscopes and pornography.

In the last year or so some young cartoonists spearheaded by my friend Daniel Jimenez-Quiroz made a petition and have just succeeded in getting the law changed so that comics are now “cultural” objects, meaning they get a bunch of tax breaks and access to grants and other kinds of support. The comics scene is just taking off there so this is great news and clears the way for new publishers like Editorial Robot (of which Daniel is also one of the publishers) and others to establish themselves.

South American comics outside of the Brazilian scene aren’;t talked about two much but Madden reports that Colombia has a burgeoning scene, with a comics festival called Entreviñetas (between the panels), which recently featured Sarah Glidden, Anders Nilsen, and Ruppert & Mulot as guests. “It’s a small but promising scene down there and I hope it will lead to general uptick in comics production throughout Latin America,” writes Madden. Peru and Bolivia also have small, emerging indy comics scenes.

8. Dandelion Seeds: The Return of Halloween Comics!

___________________________________________________________________________

halloween comicfest 2012 200x185 Dandelion Seeds: The Return of Halloween Comics!

A few months ago, I brainstormed about how Halloween mini-comics being offered by Diamond could be used in a variety of ways to promote comics and have some fun!   (Read that again… there are event suggestions and a timeline there, which I’ve paralleled below, but did not exactly duplicate.)

During C2E2, Diamond announced that in addition to the extremely successful Free Comic Book Day, a second event, linked to Halloween, would be promoted.

With the July issue of Previews, Diamond has announced the event, titled “Halloween ComicFest“, designed to help comics shops market themselves as “Halloween Headquarters”.

Sure it’s only July, but do you know where you’re getting your Halloween costume and accessories? How about a gift for the horror fan in your life? Have you decided where the best Halloween events and parties might be?

Why it’s your local comic book shop, of course!

This year, comic shops across the world will band together for Halloween ComicFest, a celebration of your local comic shops and all the comics, tricks and treats they offer. Your local comic shop already does some great Halloween events and is a great place to visit Halloween in-store events, parties, contests, sales and more!

On the next few pages, you’ll find some new offerings from comic book publishers including some new comics that will be available during your store’s Halloween ComicFest celebrations. Make sure you mark your calendars with your local comic shop’s Halloween events!

Below are the actual mini-comics offered this year, in bundles of 20, with the text from the Diamond order form.  The “Final Order Cutoff” (FOC) deadline for stores is August 30, 2012.  (Westfield’s deadline is August 28.)

Ask your local retailer to order the following for you, using the Diamond codes (JUL12 xxxx).  You should offer to pay for them in advance, since the comics shop will most likely consider these unusual items, and be hesitant to place the order.

Of course, if they’re a cool store, they are probably participating in Halloween ComicFest, and will be happy to add your order to their store order.  Bundle orders  over 25 (of all titles combined) receive an additional discount for the store.

If you do not live near a comics shop, or need to have them shipped somewhere, Westfield Comics (and many other online retailers) will allow you to order them for you.  The links below for each title direct to Westfield, which I selected because I’ve used them in the past, their website is easy to navigate, they offer a discount on the price. and they were quick to answer my questions regarding the first three items.  (ComicsPlus offers all the titles for sale, as well.)

12. Coming Attractions: April 2011

.

The following is a selection of new comics titles due to be published in April 2011.   This list is not comprehensive, just what I’ve discovered browsing the Internet.  Below, you’ll find selected titles which caught my interest.  If you would like to browse forthcoming graphic novels and related books at your leisure, click here. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore.

If you click that link above, you’ll see all the graphic novels at BN.com, sorted by date.  Lots of  graphic novels (and related books) scheduled from May to December.  Of course, there will be even more titles added and announced in time for the Holidays!  (You might want to use your tax return to buy some bookshelves.)

Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone, titles may change, and covers may be altered. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library.  I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I’ve neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below. Yes, you may promote your own work, but please include the ISBN for easy searching (and shopping!)

15. IF : Theory...do animals have souls?

I usually try to come up with an animal related theme when contributing to the word of the week at Illustration Friday. Animals are such a big part of my world, it doesn't feel normal to leave them out of my posts. I knew what I wanted to do for this week's word, "Theory", but I first had to find the right model on Google. I was looking for an animal with a soulful expression to represent a point I'm going to make which is, I find it hard to believe there are people out there whose theory is 'animals don't have souls.'

Animals are known to make choices to help people, their own species, and often times other species. Animals come from a place of pure kindness unless someone has beaten it out of them. They're unjudgemental and love unconditionally. They respond to our emotions, and even if they're ill-treated, they're quick to forgive. They love us no matter how fat, thin, bald, ugly, or ignorant we may be. Animals are used as therapy aides in hospitals, nursing homes and classrooms all over the world. They can even detect when we're ill by picking up certain chemical signals our bodies give off. Many dogs and cats have been known to actually nudge their owner in a place where there is a growth starting, and thus saving many lifes. They lie grieving by the bodies of loved ones who have passed away, and many have waited for years and years by a door or on railroad tracks, wherever, for their owners to return, never knowing they passed away. Just waiting, waiting at the last place they saw them. It breaks my heart.

So, do I think animals have souls? You bet. They're pure kindness of heart and my life is richer because they're here.

Now look into this guy's eyes and tell me you don't see an old soul.

I thought so.

16. Trade Paperback Originals...

I just got back from a lovely meeting with the own of Third Street Books (wonderful store with a great table selection and a mischievous store cat) in McMinniville, Oregon where I probably talked way too much and should have asked more questions. Next time. Next time (if she'll let me darken her door again) I'll be prepared and not half asleep. So apologies for this short post, but I wanted to know your thoughts on the subject of trade paperback originals.

Trade paperback originals are when a book is released in the Trade format without ever having been released as a hardback (normal chain of book command would be Hard to trade to mass market or Hard to mass market). Personally I like them because a.) I like the trade format and b.) I think it gives an author who might not necessarily get any attention at a hardback price point a chance to grow a following, but I would like to hear your opinion.

So, Trade paperback originals: like 'em, hate 'em, or had no idea what they were before this post?

I'll post some picture examples later.
