1. Last Literary Picnic of the summer!

This Wednesday, August 6, local author and renowned photographer, Tony Mendoza will join us as the last Literary Picnic of the 2014 season. He will talk about his new coming-of-age novel, A Cuban Summer. It is the story about a 13-year-old boy in 1950’s Havana, his love of girls, and desire for romance.

Join us anytime after 5:30 p.m. on the lawn of Thurber House, and the reading will begin at 7:00 p.m. Please remember to bring your own chairs, and while it’s too late to order a dinner through us, feel free to bring your own picnic (and alcohol, if you wish). Picnics are rain or shine. The rain site is the Columbus Museum of Art.

2. Are you ready for another fantastic event with another fascinating author?

What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne FrankIn author Nathan Englander’s latest short story collection, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank, you’ll find eight stories dealing with modern life, spirituality, belief, and relationships. The stories have a common thread of Jewish life and Jewish faith, but they range in setting from a dinner party to an elder care facility to a Times Square peep show.

The stories are both thought provoking and irreverent, and Englander certainly has a knack for the short story form. His previous short story collection, For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, was published in 1999 and won quite a few awards. Three of his short stories have also appeared in the annual Best American Short Stories collections.

We are looking forward to welcoming Nathan Englander as the next author in our Winter/Spring 2013 Evenings with Authors series. He will be here on Thursday, March 7, and will be chatting about his book at the Columbus Museum of Art at 7:30 p.m. More information and tickets are available by calling 614-464-1032 x.11 or by visiting our website.

Nathan EnglanderYou can also join us at The Author’s Table Dinner with Nathan Englander – it’s a chance for a limited number of people to get up close and personal with the author in an intimate setting. If you attend the dinner, you’ll also have reserved seating at the reading and chat, as well as the chance to get your book signed early. To order tickets for the dinner, call Anne at 614-464-1032 x.10. The deadline to order dinner tickets is Monday, March 4.

We can’t wait to hear Nathan Englander talk about this book – as the 2012 winner of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, it is one of the best short story collections of the modern era. Join us on March 7 to meet the author!

9. Evenings With Authors: J. Courtney Sullivan – And a Look Ahead to the Summer Season!

By Susanne Jaffe, Thurber House Executive Director

Last night we wrapped up our 2012 Winter/Spring Evenings With Authors season with a visit from J. Courtney Sullivan, chatting about her bestseller, Maine – a novel about generations of women visiting a family beach house and dealing with problems both personal and familial. This was the perfect book to lead into our summer season.

Drawing table at event

Attendees sign up to win a copy of J. Courtney Sullivan’s latest book.

J. Courtney Sullivan

Sullivan spoke about her books, her writing practices, and how she researches the settings of her novels.

Audience

Audience members asked many thoughtful questions of Sullivan during the Q&A portion of the program.

Book signing

Sullivan took the time to chat individually with attendees while signing their books.

This was quite a packed season of author events, including two Special Events, and all of us at Thurber House hope you enjoyed them. We want to say a big THANK YOU for your support. We love bringing the diversity of writers to you and are already starting to consider our Fall line-up.

Finish one season of author events, and just around the corner is another—this time the 27th season of our Summer Literary Picnics. In years past, the picnics have always spotlighted Ohio authors, but this year, in honor of  the Columbus Bicentennial, all five picnics will focus on Columbus authors. Information about each author can be found on our website. All the picnics—weather angels permitting!—are on the side lawn of the House. Bring quarters for those pesky parking meters along Jefferson!

Our picnics offer the option of ordering a delicious boxed dinner from Party Panache catering, or you can bring your own picnic spread – and you are welcome to bring alcoholic beverages as well. Tickets for dinner and the reading are $30, and tickets for the reading only are $15 (or $5 for children under 12). You can order tickets online here or by calling 614-464-1032 x.11.

The first picnic is Wednesday, June 13 and then June 27, July 11, July 25 and August 8. We can’t wait to see you there!

But wait—there’s more from Thurber House this summer! Also in honor of the bicentennial, Thurber House in partnership with Ohio State University’s Rare Books Libraries will have a special exhibit in the Center, next door to the House. It’s all about Columbus and Thurber: Past and Present with fantastic archival photos and even copies of Thurber’s report cards! It’s free and you can visit anytime but it might be fun to come early to the picnic and take a look before you e

10. The Slightly Less Than (Mostly Official) Wrap Up: Mona Simpson

As kids head back to school and the leaves start to turn, that means one thing for Thurber House: our Fall Evenings with Authors series begins! Last night we kicked off the series with bestselling author Mona Simpson – a fantastic event! Simpson shared from her most recent novel My Hollywood. The story shares Hollywood from two perspectives – that of a family and that of the caretakers of those families, and the relationships and dynamics that form between the two.

During the event, Simpson talked about her writing process, character development and life experiences that inspired the story behind the book.

The storyline for this novel emerged from observations she made when taking her children to a nearby park. Simpson noticed several very different groups of women gathered. She would see the stay-at-home mothers together in one area, and then groups of nannies and caretakers grouped by ethnicity in another. Simpson explained how “… the voices of those women became imprinted on me.” It was from those observations and interactions that the idea for My Hollywood began to take shape.

The book took her 10+ years to develop and write as the characters evolved over time. Simpson shared that when she initially wrote the two main characters, Claire and Lola, she struggled with making each sound authentic. After many re-writes and collecting feedback from mothers and caretakers, Simpson felt more satisfied with how the characters had developed.

Simpson’s thoughtful words and quick wit had the audience relating to her and laughing throughout the evening. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the first Evenings with Authors event. If you missed it, don’t worry: We have four more authors joining us this fall. Hope to see you there!

12. Thurber House Staff Summer Reading Picks

It’s a welcomed side-effect of working at Thurber House that all of us here spend a lot of time reading – and thinking about – good books, especially in the summer, when we all need to unwind and relax after a day in the office.

Yesterday, we posted hundreds of choices for summer reading in lists from across the web. Today, we’re switching gears and making our own list. Each member of the Thurber House  team was asked to submit one suggestion – the absolute top of their summer reading list. Without further adieu, here’s the Thurber House Staff Summer Reading List.

The book: The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
The staffer: Meg Brown, Children’s Programming
Meg says: “Just one?! Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins! Our campers and Young Docents have been raving about it for years and I haven’t read it yet. It’s the top of my to-read list at the moment. “

The book: The Passage, Justin Cronin
The staffer: Pat Shannon, Director of Education
Pat says: “I am most looking forward to finishing The Passage by Justin Cronin.  I just

have short snips of time to read and it has been slow going for me but I am determined.”

The book: The Land of Painted Caves, Jean Auel
The staffer: Anne Touvell, Deputy Executive Director
Anne says: “I’m looking forward to reading Jean Auel’s, The Land of Painted Caves. It’s the 6th in the Earth’s Children series, I’ve read them all – each is hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pages and she puts new books out so infrequently…. I need closure. I must finish Ayla’s journey!”

The book: The Parisians: An Adventure History of Paris, Graham Robb
The staffer: Susanne Jaffe, Executive Director
Susanne says: “The first is: The Parisians: An Adventure History of Paris by Graham Robb, a non-fiction look at this remarkable city from the perspectives of a variety of different people.”

What’s at the top of your summer list?

New York Times bestselling author of Manhunt, Swanson comes to Thurber House to read from his latest book, Bloody Crimes: The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant of Lincoln’s Corpse.
