More “Blackest Night” and more Batman make September another good month for DC Comics’ periodical business. This year’s retelling of Superman’s origin doesn’t set the charts on fire, on the other hand, despite the big-ticket creative team of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank — maybe it’s time to retire the character. In other news, J. Michael Straczynski, who’s had some success recently writing the Hollywood film Changeling and Marvel’s Thor, was also meant to do something for DC in September, but I can’t seem to find it, so maybe … ah, hold it, there it is. My bad, I wasn’t scrolling fast enough.
Average DC sales remained relatively steady on balance, which for the publisher’s Vertigo and WildStorm imprints means that they sold around 10,000 units each of the comic books, give or take a few. (Vertigo: give a few; WildStorm: take a few.) Vertigo’s big periodical launch was Jeff Lemire’s post-ap-oddball-yptic Sweet Tooth, the latest new-series launch to retail for $ 1.00. At WildStorm’s comic-book department, the most noteworthy development is that they had four books below the 5K mark, two of which missed the Top 300 chart altogether. Reportedly, WildStorm’s made some lucrative wholesale deals with the video-game industry recently, to be fair, which would explain the continued existence of at least some of its titles.
See below for the analysis, and please consider the small print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

1 - BLACKEST NIGHT 07/2009: Blackest Night #1 of 8 — 177,105 [196,066] 08/2009: Blackest Night #2 of 8 — 146,092 (-17.5%) [155,512] 09/2009: Blackest Night #3 of 8 — 140,786 (- 3.6%)
Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis’ Blackest Night remains the best-selling comic in the North American direct market by about 30,000 units; the number-two book, Marvel’s Reborn #3, sold an estimated 108,331 units.
Blackest Night is levelling off very quickly for a high-profile miniseries, while reorders for previous issues also remain strong: Blackest Night #1 sold another 10,996 units in September, issue #2 another 9,420 and July’s Blackest Night: Tales of the Corps #2 also made the chart again, with an additional 4,098 copies — and there were more, see below.
As usual, I should point out that the book’s numbers — and especially the smooth drop-off — probably have a lot to do with the available variant-cover editions. For Blackest Night #1, there was a 1-for-250 edition, which means retailers needed to order 250 copies of the regular edition for every copy of the variant edition; for issue #2, there was a 1-for-200 edition; starting with #3, there are 1-for-100 editions for all remaining issues — also, all issues of Blackest Night are promoted with additional 1-for-25 variant-cover editions.
Still, even taking into account that there’s likely some distortion going on at the retail level thanks to the gimmick incentives, Blackest Night keeps performing very, very well.

3 - BATMAN AND ROBIN 06/2009: Batman and Robin #1 — 168,604 [184,826] 07/2009: Batman and Robin #2 — 117,986 (-30.2%) [129,086] 08/2009: Batman and Robin #3 — 110,594 (- 6.3%) 09/2009: Batman and Robin #4 — 106,925 (- 3.3%)
Like Blackest Night, Batman and Robin is supported through 1-for-25 variant editions every month. Unlike Blackest Night, only issue #1 came with a second, rarer variant edition.
As a result of that, the second-issue drop-off was a bit steeper here. Starting with issue #3, Batman and Robin is also levelling out very quickly, however, and even the fact that superstar Frank Quitely left after the third issue doesn’t seem to have any negative impact on the numbers. The Batman franchise remains healthier than it’s been in a while.

10 - BLACKEST NIGHT: SUPERMAN 08/2009: Blackest Night: Superman #1 of 3 — 76,899 [87,016] 09/2009: Blackest Night: Superman #2 of 3 — 78,766 (+2.4%)
In case you hadn’t guessed it, these books are all part of “Blackest Night.” Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern is leading the pack with its 100K+ figure, while Blackest Night: Batman and Blackest Night: Superman see upward corrections. Both spin-off series went up in sales and also moved about 10,000 more units of their debut issues in September.
All four books were supported through 1-for-25 variants to boost the numbers, as usual.

11 - BATMAN 09/2004: Batman #632 — 71,236 [ 72,859] 09/2005: Batman #645 — 65,984 [ 67,712] 09/2006: Batman #657 — 91,357 [ 96,127] 09/2007: Batman #669 — 73,471 ——————————- 09/2008: – 10/2008: Batman #680 — 103,941 (+ 0.3%) 11/2008: Batman #681 — 103,151 (- 0.8%) [114,657] 12/2008: Batman #682 — 93,469 (- 9.4%) 12/2008: Batman #683 — 90,272 (- 3.4%) [ 91,885] 12/2008: Batman #684 — 79,953 (-11.4%) [ 82,903] 01/2009: Batman #685 — 72,654 (- 9.1%) 02/2009: Batman #686 — 111,353 (+53.3%) [128,780] 03/2009: BfC #1 of 3 — 91,619 (-17.7%) [103,913] 04/2009: BfC #2 of 3 — 89,120 (- 2.7%) 05/2009: BfC #3 of 3 — 89,170 (+ 0.1%) 06/2009: Batman #687 — 96,913 (+ 8.7%) 07/2009: Batman #688 — 83,040 (-14.3%) 08/2009: Batman #689 — 78,392 (- 5.6%) 09/2009: Batman #690 — 77,001 (- 1.8%) —————- 6 months: -16.0% 1 year : n.a. 2 years : + 4.8% 5 years : + 8.1%
The revamped Batman is also finding its level. There haven’t been any variant editions since issue #687, so these figures look great.

17 - BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS 08/2009: Blackest Night: Titans #1 of 3 — 64,767 [71,321] 09/2009: Blackest Night: Titans #2 of 3 — 64,086 (-1.1%)
Blackest Night: Titans isn’t up there with the other Blackest Night spin-offs, but it still sells more than twice as many units as the regular Titans and Teen Titans books.
Issue #1 sold another 6,554 units in September, which, combined with the minuscule second-issue drop, suggests that retailers aimed too low here as well, with their initial orders.
As usual, sales were boosted with a 1-for-25 variant-cover edition.

Detective Comics also seems to be bottoming out, with sales that are still more than comfortable historically. Again, there haven’t been any variants here since June.

26 - JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA 09/2004: JLA #105 — 60,836 09/2004: JLA #106 — 59,838 [ 60,943] 09/2005: JLA #118 — 89,428 09/2005: JLA #119 — 94,073 [106,305] 09/2006: Justice League #2 — 143,412 [158,480] 09/2007: Justice League #13 — 119,471 [124,006] ————————————– 09/2008: – 10/2008: Justice League #25 — 80,731 (- 0.9%) 10/2008: Justice League #26 — 77,353 (- 4.2%) 11/2008: – 12/2008: Justice League #27 — 75,803 (- 2.0%) 12/2008: Justice League #28 — 72,728 (- 4.1%) 01/2009: Justice League #29 — 72,116 (- 0.8%) 02/2009: Justice League #30 — 69,710 (- 3.3%) 03/2009: Justice League #31 — 68,759 (- 1.4%) 04/2009: Justice League #32 — 66,021 (- 4.0%) 05/2009: Justice League #33 — 63,867 (- 3.3%) 06/2009: Justice League #34 — 61,115 (- 4.3%) 07/2009: Justice League #35 — 58,915 (- 3.6%) 08/2009: Justice League #36 — 57,549 (- 2.3%) 09/2009: Justice League #37 — 55,478 (- 3.6%) —————- 6 months: -19.3% 1 year : n.a. 2 years : -53.6% 5 years : - 8.1%
Sales data prior to 2003 isn’t 100 percent compatible with the recent ICv2.com numbers, but it looks like Justice League sales have now dropped to their lowest point since Grant Morrison relaunched the book as JLA back in 1996. Ever since Brad Meltzer left, the series has been sliding down the charts.

27 - JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE 07/2009: Cry for Justice #1 of 6 — 68,317 [72,719] 08/2009: Cry for Justice #2 of 6 — 54,553 (-20.2%) [58,829] 09/2009: Cry for Justice #3 of 6 — 54,726 (+ 0.3%)
On the other hand, the new regular Justice League of America writer starting with issue #39 is James Robinson, whose Cry for Justice miniseries is defying mixed reviews in September.
It rarely happens that sales stop declining with issue #3, and the fact that both previous issues sold another 4,000+ units more in September suggests that it’s not just a blip.
Maybe Robinson can build on this momentum with the monthly series.

28 - SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN 09/2009: Superman: Secret Origin #1 of 6 — 54,630
Are people tired of Superman? Or are they just tired of Superman origin stories? Either way, the debut sales for Superman: Secret Origin aren’t stellar, given the high-profile creative team of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank and the support of a 1-for-10 variant-cover edition. The numbers are in the same ballpark as those of Johns and Frank’s recent run on Action Comics; which isn’t terrible, but if this was meant to kick-start interest in the character, it doesn’t really seem to be working.

39 - RED ROBIN 09/2004: Robin #130 — 45,406 [47,113] 09/2005: Robin #142 — 28,822 09/2006: Robin #154 — 34,387 09/2007: Robin #166 — 24,877 ——————————– 09/2008: Robin #178 — 32,234 (+ 2.8%) 10/2008: Robin #179 — 30,081 (- 6.7%) 11/2008: Robin #180 — 28,399 (- 5.6%) 12/2008: Robin #181 — 27,891 (- 1.8%) 01/2009: Robin #182 — 28,684 (+ 2.8%) 02/2009: Robin #183 — 31,682 (+ 10.5%) 03/2009: – 04/2009: – 05/2009: – 06/2009: Red Robin #1 — 64,261 (+102.8%) [71,925] 07/2009: Red Robin #2 — 51,593 (- 19.7%) [54,544] 08/2009: Red Robin #3 — 50,329 (- 2.5%) 09/2009: Red Robin #4 — 47,945 (- 4.7%) —————– 6 months: n.a. 1 year : + 48.7% 2 years : + 92.7% 5 years : + 5.6%
Red Robin hasn’t found its level quite yet, but remains miles ahead of Robin. So far, the makeover of the Batman line looks like a winner.

The same cannot be said of Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges’ Justice Society. Sales keep plummeting down the chart.

As far as second-issue drops are concerned, you could say that Kevin Smith’s second Batman miniseries gets off easy, as well.
On the other hand, the fact that there even was another second-issue drop suggests that Smith’s popularity in the comics market has seen better days. Earlier in the decade, he moved twice as many units with a character who isn’t half as recognizable as Batman, and did so without the help of variant-cover editions. This time around, there’s another 1-for-25 one, as usual.

I know Superman/Batman isn’t part of the Superman line, but it certainly doesn’t seem to matter to retailers. Despite sporting some otherwise acclaimed creators, all four books have been shedding readers at a very unhealthy rate for months.
Superman: World of New Krypton was promoted with a 1-for-25 variant edition.

Well, this doesn’t look very impressive, given the amount of promotion and the creative roster of Wednesday Comics. And, one more time: Economics are probably very different for a $ 3.99, 15-page tabloid.
It seems DC expects the book to play well in the book market, if the unusually quick announcement of a relatively cheap oversized hardcover collection is any indication. If those expectations are justified — and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be — that’s going to make a follow-up series a lot likelier.

This one’s dropping off the map quickly, not surprisingly. It doesn’t stop DC from launching an ongoing Justice Society spin-off, though.

120 - RED TORNADO 09/2009: Red Tornado #1 of 6 — 20,551
The Red Tornado used to be somewhat popular while Brad Meltzer was writing Justice League, as I recall, so this is another one of those projects that make you wonder whose chair’s been choking the pipeline at DC. A lot of their publishing decisions look like they could have made sense two or three years earlier.

128 - SWEET TOOTH (Vertigo) 09/2009: Sweet Tooth #1 — 18,657
Jeff Lemire’s idiosyncratic stab at the apocalypse and what happens after is Vertigo’s latest $ 1.00 loss-leader. Compared to The Unwritten and Greek Street, we could talk about diminishing returns. Then again, Sweet Tooth is rather off the beaten path for Vertigo, so from that perspective, it’s fending for itself rather well.
Vertigo keep the $ 1.00 books coming, for the time being, and the first paperback collection of the book’s they’ve supported has yet to ship, so we’ll find out if the stunt works over the course of next year.

Well, it’s not like J. Michael Straczynski’s one-shots provided these series with a great launch pad to begin with. Color me surprised if these books make it past issue #12.
There were 1-for-10 variants for both The Shield and The Web.

Periodical business? I thought the replacement word ” pamphlets ” was the new lingo being used?
~
Coat
Merriam-Webster: an unbound printed publication with no cover or with a paper cover.
Pamphlet is not a term that applies to comic books, no matter how many people use it to disguise the fact that they are embarrassed to say they read comic books.
Heh, snarky : )
I’m more or less convinced that DC has to keep publishing those Wildstorm titles as part of the deal they made when Jim Lee sold the company to them.
And I can’t believe a Philip Bond comic sells so poorly. Oh comics.
I think I would be more embarassed to say I spend time reading pamphlets
According to Jim Lee, Wildstorm’s Gears of War #1 was the best selling comic of 2008, obviously not in the direct market. Maybe they are being given away, but that’s still money in the bank for Wildstorm, and comics in the hands of people who don’t regularly shop at comic stores. Seems like a great thing to me.
With Detective Comics selling 57K units, does that make it the highest selling title featuring a female lead? Those are pretty good numbers on that basis.
And what does it say about Justice League of America that Detective Comics (with said female lead) is outselling it. Essentially that is because the make-up of the team is garbage. Until Didio and Co get that straightened out, the book is going to maintain those low levels.
Surprising that Superman only outsells Superman/Batman by about a thousand copies. Doesn’t say much for the Superman family of books at the moment.
I think that is highlighted even more by the fact that Supergirl is selling only 5K less than Superman currently is.
It’s a shame more aren’t buying BATMAN: THE BRAVE & THE BOLD. It’s the best Batman book on the market. I like Morrison’s BATMAN & ROBIN, but I’d so much rather read Batman turned into a giant monster by Hugo Strange fighting a giant-sized Atom (who will explode if he maintains his size for more than 30 minutes) in the streets of Gotham. Awesome stuff that’s everything a comic book should be.
Just read Batman: Brave and Bold a few hours ago. FUN!

Ah well, I guess the formatting did NOT come out all right…it’s still kinda readable…
SUPERMAN–Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but apparently thousands agree with me: I started picking up Action/Superman when Johns/Robinson came on and really liked it, and even had trouble getting them at my LCS because sales had picked up. THEN… then… another brilliant idea from DD and co.: REMOVE SUPERMAN from the title, bring in a confusing (to the average reader) story that, in whole, been in the miniseries. KILL THE MOMENTUM that Action/Superman had started to pick up. Great work, guys!
I think Superman is suffering from too many books. I know DC keeps promising big payoffs but when you have to read 4-5 titles plus one-shots and specials a month to get the scoop on Superman then I think the average reader is scared off or priced out.
Should have collapsed Supergirl into Superman as a back-up with Mon-El as the lead. Action could have taken New Krypton as it’s back-up so Superman would still be in one of his own books. And Superman/Batman is should just end since it hasn’t had an audience outside of completest for both heroes I think in a couple of years.
As for JLA…yeah the roster is bad but the Titans roster Robinson is going to place in isn’t instilling me with a lot of interest either. The Atom in the JLA again will be great but Congorilla, Cyborg and Starfire???
Batman relaunch..I think Paul Dini’s titles suffer from not feeling like they are part of the Bat books but rather continuation of stories from his Detective Comics run which were slow moving story arcs.
Also again too many Bat Books. I think DC could have easly been happy with Batman and Robin, Batman, Detective and Red Robin. Gotham Sirens and Manhunter-SOG backup, could have been the back up for B&R and Batman.
Just bouncing in for three quick points (in decreasing order):
1. I’m not even getting too deep into the hot-cold Blackest Night tie-ins. Batman did best with it, because of the great unspoken motivation of the memories of dead family members throughout the title’s entire history. Superman was full of sigh; it’s far too easy for the Big Blue Boy Scout to shrug off pathos. Titans landed somewhere in between. With all the dead Titans, there was plenty of material. Too bad this series beats both the monthlies for material with potential for fan interest.
2. For the love of Hawkman’s tailfeathers, get Willingham and Sturges off of JSA, now! Yes, I know they haven’t had long, but they have completely abandoned the familial feel of JSA for traditional team book shtick. This book is not “Uncanny Old-Men”. Ick.
3. To this day, I still don’t understand the Super Team’s continuing fascination with Superman’s origin. If Matt Idelson is paying attention, I’ll type slowly: Stop… re… hashing… the… *(&^%… story…!
[…] Marc-Oliver Frisch presents his month-to-month estimates for DC Comics’ sales to Direct Market retailers, now updated for September. […]
So is there some wild girl on girl action going on in Detective Comics that I’m missing? Something must pushing her numbers up.
cookymaloo, it’s the artist.
“Coming up? More of the same. How do they keep publishing WildStorm Universe comics at these numbers? No idea.”
The Authority and Wildcats actually have new writers incoming, so no, it isn’t more of the same. God knows why DC is bothering to replace Abnett & Lanning and Gage with even lower profile, less talented writers though.
@ Joe Gualtieri: Just guessing really, but I imagine the current sales levels don’t justify the page rates of the current talent.
Coat poses the question, “Periodical business? I thought the replacement word ” pamphlets ” was the new lingo being used?”
I prefer calling them “singles”, and graphic novels/trade paperbacks “albums”, but that could just be me.
Also, about Starcraft:
“Is this selling anywhere? To actual people, I mean, rather than wholesale, to companies that view it as a promotional giveaway?”
I have one guy that reserves this in my store, but other than that, no.
And Warcraft has two reserve people (one of ‘em is the aforementioned Starcraft guy).
Joe,
“The Authority and Wildcats actually have new writers incoming, so no, it isn’t more of the same.”
I tend to disagree. As long as they keep publishing books that pretend WildStorm is still a strong publishing brand and the WildStorm Universe and its characters so inherently fascinating that more generic superhero stories will do, I don’t view the change of a creative team as a breath of fresh air.
Hiring someone like Brian Wood and a promising new artist to relaunch one of their properties is a step in the right direction, certainly, but it doesn’t strike me as nearly radical enough. In order to convince people that there’s still life in the imprint, they’ll have to do a lot more, and it doesn’t seem to be happening. If anything, people might not notice Wood’s book because it’s stuck in a crowd of zombie properties (THE AUTHORITY: THE LOST YEAR…?!).
