40801. The suspect!

This is an inference picture! After a two days vacation before Christmas, I noticed that my curtain have two scratches added on it! Who did that? When I checked on Bobo, two furless spots found! Poor Bobo, obviously she had been bullied by the jealous male orange cat who came every night! Now, I got the suspect, but what I can do further? "Nothing"! :>

就是这只大黃猫,好几个月前就来了,每晚在窗外站岗,我走近就喵喵叫,要食物,要人疼,比Bobo还嗲!

Here's the orange cat, still came every night, sitting outside the window, asking for food, asking to be stroked! Sometimes I feel that he love me more than Bobo do! :(

Bobo本来很愜意的在刷毛洗身体,他看着看着就眼红了,跳上来巴她!后来我就不淮他进来房间了!

Bobo brushing her body comfortably before he jumped up slapping on her! Since then, I won't allow him to enter my room!

Bobo怕他又爱偷看他!

Bobo afraid of him, yet like to peep at him!

40803. Otter Sighting…

I was shopping at Newbury Comics the other day, and came across one of my newer Club Earth toy items that I hadn’t seen out in the world yet.

This little otter guy is weighted so that he will float. A bubble bottle fits inside him so you can have bubble stuff in the tub or pool.

40806. The Naked Poet

This is the thinnest life model I've ever seen. He also gives poetry readings in the nude. He reminded me of Lytton Strachey.

Joe Alterio of the awesome project Robots & Monsters has seen fit to call me an “All-Star!” I’ll take it! And what does that mean to you, you robot- and/or monster-lover? It means that you can bid on a chance to give me some suggestions, and I’ll draw you a big (9”x12”-ish) robot or monster to love and cherish for years to come. (or from which to cower in fear, if you want a scary one) Go place your bids for a chance to have me do your bidding! As always, funds raised go toward a charitable organization!

40809. Spring 2011!

Yes, there's 20 inches of snow on the ground (with another exciting storm on the way!), but spring is just around the corner over at Amazon.com. Who Has These Feet?, my illustrious illustration project for 2011, is ready and waiting for its marching orders. Written by Brooklyn Friends School Learning Specialist, Laura Hulbert, and published by Henry Holt, Who Has These Feet? will step into the world on August 16th.

40810. A new January

"You can't plow a field by turning it over in your mind." -Irish proverb

I stumbled across that saying years ago and it has traveled with me, scrawled on a scrap of paper, from the bulletin board of my tiny apartment in Austin, TX, to my even tinier apartments in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and now to the bulletin board of my slightly less tiny home in Colorado.

I've always enjoyed imagining my life as a children's book illustrator. Its easy to IMAGINE making beautiful illustrations and beautfiul books and having a big, busy, successful career. But the DOING... sometimes the doing requires a bit of a nudge from that scrap of paper.

And now, after being laid off at the beginning of December due to the sluggish economy...Now, at the beginning of another year...Now, more than ever, is the time for doing.

So here's to new beginnings and joyful days. Here's to "plowing the field" for real.

Happy New Year!

40811. a little bit waspy

My first post of 2011 (Happy Nearly New Year!), and my first post on a little bit bunny since we made it public on Christmas Eve. This month's unfortunate creature is the bane of many a picnic and barbecue, the cantankerous wasp. I wanted to turn the 'concept' of the wasp on its head somehow. So my thought process looped and spiralled around the idea of drawing the wasp as a happy chappy. First on a scooter (a Vespa of course), then as a content Buddha. But in the end the spiky character of the wasp was too strong to ignore. That's when the I moved onto the idea of having a wasp being assaulted by little flying humans, a modest attempt at getting my own back on buzzy little picnic crashers. I was going to recreate Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe with wasps as the picnickers, but something about the lazy feeling of the painting, again went against the natural character of the wasp. You can see my finished piece here.

Apparently both Matt and Kev thought about using the cheeky little Vespa as a prop. I'm glad they decided against it, because as we all know, variety is the spice of life, and the three offerings to albb this month are all very different in flavour.

40812. Weave in the Ends

I'm finishing up the last few pages in my Sketchbook Project contribution. Saturday is the last day to post entries, so I'm scribbling/pasting/painting furiously. My theme was, "In Flight," and it's been a real treat to work on.

And other things I am attempting to finish at breakneck pace, a million of these squares. Well, maybe not a million, but it sure feels that way. I was working on this while watching "The Secret of Kells" this weekend. Twice. If you haven't seen it yet, be sure to rectify the situation immediately. It's easily one of the best animated films I've ever seen.

Also, I just realized this month marks five years of blogging. Good times!

The Dutch know how it's done. Reminds me of when I was little and we used to skate for miles along the drainage ditches in the fields below our house.

40822. Illustration Friday - Deja Vu

Yes, this really is a deja vu,  a story I wrote a looong time ago. I recently rewrote it, changed the ethnicity of the characters to make it less Eurocentric, cut about 200 words, generally whipped this baby into shape. I KNOW it is a much better story now. ...getting ready to send it out into the world... again.
Wish us luck!
PS "One of a Kind Ayana!", about a mixed-race girl who has to make a 'heritage doll' for a school project, and how she comes to terms with her complicated ancestry.  The illustration is her 'nightmare' , when Ayana is overwhelmed by it all.

40824. Snowy deer

Well it's the middle of summer here in Australia, but I did this illustration on returning from America, where it was lovely to have a wintry Christmas (although no snow where we were, unlike the rest of the country)

Happy new year! May 2011 be a year of fun, laughter, and creativity for all of us.
