4. Hartford MFA: Gary Kelley

Another instructor at the Hartford MFA program is Gary Kelley. I won't have a class with him until next year but that didn't stop me from sketching him during down moment. Can not wait to watch his mono print demo!

5. Hartford MFA: Ted and Betsy Lewin

The instructors for my children's book illustration class were none other than Ted and Betsy Lewin!
Such a splendid couple! I caught Betsy pretty well but Ted eluded me in this sketch. (More on him later) The guy on the left was a speaker at the Norman Rockwell museum who gave a remarkably tone deaf lecture on Edward Hopper.

7. MFA Speakers: Gary Lippincott

I've been aware of his work for years, excellent to hear him speak about it in person
(and the unfinished sketch on the right is Murray Tinkelman)

9. Hartford MFA: Students

So one of the things that I do compulsively is draw people around me. My fellow students were wonderfully accommodating (and sometimes completely unaware)

10. Hartford MFA: Dennis Nolan

Just got back from the first session of my Hartford University MFA Illustration program. Dennis Nolan was one of the instructors for the Advanced Illustration class. Can you guess what his mantra was? Go on, try.

12. Recent Sketch: Paint Break!!

Been working like crazy this last year, but so much has been digital. Every so often I have to just step away from the monitor and splash some paint around in my sketchbook. Here is the result.

13. Theater Poster: Mark Twain's Mississippi

Might have taken this project simply to play with the "Mississippi" type. But had a great time working  Twain's handwritten manuscripts into the image

14. Theater Poster Sketches: Click Clack Moo

Easily one of the things I love most about working with theaters is the chance to offer my interpretation of my favorite stories. I've done many of the classic public domain stories, but I love being able to have a go at more contemporary books. I love, love(!) Betsy Lewin's illustrations for Click Clack Moo, but still had a blast giving Doreen Cronin's story my own take. Here are the rough sketches for the theater poster.

Bunnicula was one of my favorite books from when I was eight. I got the opportunity to create my version for a theater poster.

20. Society of Illustrators Juried Show

Honored to have this book cover I did selected for the Society of Illustrators Annual 55 (whoo-hoo!)
The opening reception was last Friday and runs until March 2nd 2013.

Unfortunately my work schedule means that I won't be able to check out the show in person, but if you do go, please drop me a line (and maybe a photo?)

22. Sheep Lessons Part 1

Did this project for Spider Magazine that was published a couple months ago. I enjoy working for magazines because (especially Spider) because the art direction is fairly light and I can try out different techniques. I was happy with how this series of illustrations turned out. I'll post my favorite three over the next few days.

24. Sheep Lessons Part 3

A bit of a jump in the narrative. Suffice to say our heroine has enjoyed her first day of Kindergarten.
