Get ready for the Chinese New Year with these recommended Children's Books About the Chinese New Year / Lunar New Year. One of them, Crouching Tiger, is a book children will enjoy any time of year because, while it includes the Chinese New Year celebration, the focus is more on how a Chinese-American boy comes to appreciate his Chinese grandfather who is visiting for the New Year. Young kids who are fascinated with martial arts will particularly enjoy the book. Read over my list, and if you have other books about the Chinese New Year to recommend, please click on "Comments" below and share your recommendations.

Jon Klassen is the 2013 Randolph Caldecott Medal winner for picture book illustration for This Is Not My Hat, a dark and funny book that will appeal to ages 4 to 8. For two years running, picture books written and illustrated by Klassen have been on my personal list of the best illustrated books of the year. This year it was This Is Not My Hat and last year, it was I Want My Hat Back. Extra Yarn, which Klassen also illustrated, is a 2013 Caldecott Honor Book. I have added the 2013 information to my 75 Years of Caldecott Medal Winners. Were you pleased Klassen won the 2013 Caldecott Medal or do you have another picture book published in 2012 that you prefer? Click on "Comments" below and share your opinion.

If you are looking for a special children's book for Valentine's Day, there are both Valentine's Day books and books about family love included on my Top Children's Books for Valentine's Day. I recommend the pop-up edition of Guess How Much I Love You? particularly if the picture book is already family favorite, in which case it would be a good gift for a father and son or teen brother and his little brother to share as a symbol of their love for one another. In addition to the pop-up and picture books, you'll also find some Valentine's Day books for young readers. If you have others to recommend, please click on "Comments" below and share your favorites.

The narrative nonfiction book Bomb: The Race to Build-and Steal-the World's Most Dangerous Weapon by Steve Sheinkin received major honors yesterday. The book was named a 2013 John Newbery Honor Book and won the 2013 Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award and the 2013 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults. According to librarian Jennifer Kendall, Bomb: The Race to Build-and Steal-the World's Most Dangerous Weapon is so well-written and full of action and history that it will appeal to a broad range of ages: 10 to 18. It's this appeal for a wide range of ages that undoubtedly affected the book receiving both Newbery honors, which recognize books for children from babies up to 14 years old, and the YALSA award, which honors young adult books, which are generally considered to be for ages 12 to 18. Steve Sheinkin is also the author of The Notorious Benedict Arnold, which received both the 2012 YALSA Award for Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults and the 2011 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Nonfiction.

Every year, I create my own personal list of the best illustrated books of the previous year. I always create my list before the major children's book awards are announced so I am not influenced by them. This year, I almost didn't make it since the announcements are tomorrow. In preparation for making my list, I make a point of looking at as many books as possible. Last year was particularly difficult because so many terrific children's books were published. I'll probably be tweaking this list for awhile and if any of the books do win awards, I'll add that to my list. Are any of the books on my list of the Best Illustrated Books of 2012 ones you liked, too? Do you and your children have other favorite children's books from 2012 you'd like to recommend? If so, please click on "Comments" below and list them.

Every Saturday, I do a blog post sharing some of the children's books news that I've received during the week. Today, it includes a new book and movie, plus an award announcement.
A New Book from Kate DiCamillo - Kate DiCamillo, who won a Newbery Medal for her book The Tale of Despereaux and whose Because of Winn-Dixie received Newbery honors, has a new novel for kids coming out September 24, 2013. K.G. Campbell is the illustrator of the 240-page book, Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures. The book has an intriguing format. (Source: USA Today, 1/24/13)
Another Movie with a Children's Literature Connection - Several weeks ago when I mentioned the upcoming 2013 movies based on popular books in a blog post, I left out one. Oz the Great and Powerful has been rated PG and will be released March 8. The film is about the origins of the character known as the Wizard of Oz in the classic children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum.
Award-winning Nonfiction for Children - The National Council of Teachers of English has announced the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction for Children. The 2013 winner is Monsieur Marceau: Actor without Words by Leda Schubert, with illustrations by Gérard DuBois. Five Orbis Pictus Award Honor Books and 8 Recommended Books were also recognized. These are all excellent books, carefully evaluated and selected so you can be sure they are accurate, well organized, well designed and well written.

Did you know that the American Library Association is in the middle of a big celebration? Join the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Caldecott Medal for picture book illustration. How? Celebrate by sharing many of the award-winning books with your children, from A Ball for Daisy, last year's winner, to Where the Wild Things Are, which won in 1964 and has become a classic, to the very first book to be recognized. Where can you find out information about the winners and when they won? I just finished a list for you, 75 Years of Randolph Caldecott Medal Winners, and linked to related articles and reviews. As I review more of the books, I'll add the links to the list. I'll add the 2013 Caldecott Medal winner on Monday when the announcement is made.

If you have a baby or very young children and want to raise eager readers, you need a book of Mother Goose and other nursery rhymes to share with your little ones. There are lots of benefits to Mother Goose rhymes in terms of literacy, so sharing nursery rhymes with babies and other young children is not only enjoyable, it is also educational. One of my favorite collections is Pocketful of Posies: A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes. While it contains a good collection of nursery rhymes, the best things about Pocketful of Posies are the illustrations: elaborate hand-sewn fabric collages by Salley Mavor that illustrate each rhyme. Children (and adults) will enjoy looking at the collages again and again because there is so much to discover in each one. If you are looking for nursery rhyme books your little ones can handle, see Mother Goose Board Books for Little Ones.

Do your middle grade kids love baseball? While they are waiting for the season to begin, they can learn more about the sport, and about how to improve their own playing, by reading Kids' Nonfiction Books About Baseball. Whether it's statistics, playing tips for all positions, Major League players, or the history of the Negro Leagues, you'll find it in one or more of these books. Even kids who love baseball but are reluctant readers are apt to be eager to read these books. Have fun sharing statistics and trying to stump one another with some of the baseball trivia and history in these nonfiction books for upper elementary and middle school kids.

Scholastic has released its fourth Kids & Family Reading Report. Not surprisingly, it shows a significant increase in kids' use of eBooks, but it also reveals that 80% of those eBook readers "still read books for fun primarily in print." If you have purchased an eReader for your child or teen, please share your opinion of it at Readers Respond. To learn about a Web site that provides free access to books from many different countries, read my article about the International Children's Digital Library.
For a list of good children's books published in 2012, see
Notable Children's Books 2013 - Nominated Titles selected by the 2013 Notable Children's Books Committee of the Association of Library Service to Children (ALSC). See my article about the Notable Children's Books List for more information about the annual list.
Gerald McDermott, author and illustrator of a number of colorful and award-winning children's books, and a talented filmmaker, died December 26, 2012. McDermott received the Randolph Caldecott Medal in 1975 for picture book illustration for Arrow to the Sun and two of his other picture books were honored as Caldecott Honor Books. If the inauguration has your kids talking about U.S. presidency and the White House, I recommend Our White House: Looking In, Looking Out, a project of the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance (NCBLA). The book took 8 years to develop and was created by 108 well-known authors and illustrators. This fascinating anthology of American history centers on the White House and its inhabitants. Our White House: Looking In, Looking Out is 244-pages long and includes a wide variety of historical fiction and nonfiction. I recommend it for ages 9 to 14 and as a family read aloud, as well as for classroom use. See Children's Books that Celebrate America for more books about U.S. History, symbols, tall tales, documents and more.

The newest is <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/productreviews/fr/I-Have-A-Dream-Childrens-Book.htm"><i>I Have a Dream</i></a> by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which contains portions of his historic speech, accompanied by the dramatic artwork of Kadir Nelson. The book comes with a CD of Dr. King delivering the speech almost fifty years ago on August 28, 1963.
<p>Others I recommend include: <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/productreviews/fr/Martins-Big-Words-Picture-Book-Review.htm"><i>Martin's Big Words</i></a>, a wonderful picture book biography of Martin Luther King, Jr., which was written by Doreen Rappaport and has dramatic and moving cut paper collage and watercolor illustrations by Bryan Collier, <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/culturalafrican/fr/portraits.htm"><i>Portraits of African-American Heroes</i></a> by Tonya Boldon, with illustrations by Ansel Pitcairn; <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/historicalfiction/gr/greensboro.htm"><i>Freedom on the Menu: The Greensboro Sit-Ins</i></a> by Carole Boston Weatherford, with illustrations by Jerome Lagarrigue; and <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/cs/culturalafrican/fr/letitshine.htm"><i>Let It Shine: Stories of Black Women Freedom Fighters</i></a> by Andrea Davis Pinkney, with illustrations by Stephen Alcorn. Like <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/middleschool/fr/hugo_cabret.htm"><i>Hugo Cabret</i></a>, <i>Wonderstruck</i> is "A Novel in Words and Pictures" for middle grade readers. What makes <i>Wonderstruck</i> unique is that it tells two stories, one set in 1977 and told in words only, and one set 50 years earlier, in 1927, and told exclusively in illustrations. Not until near the end of the book do the the two stories come together. </p><p> Brian Selznick won a 2012 Schneider Family Book Award in recognition of his "artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences" in his portrayal of each of the main characters in the two stories, a boy and a girl, both of whom are deaf. See my <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/productreviews/fr/Wonderstruck-By-Brian-Selznick.htm">review of <i>Wonderstruck</i></a> for more about the book, including why Selznick dedicated the book to Maurice Sendak, creator of the classic picture book <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/cs/picturebooks/fr/wildthings.htm"><i>Where the Wild Things Are</i></a>, among others. </p><p><i>Wonderstruck</i> is 600+ pages long and includes more than 450 of Selznick's dense pencil illustrations. Happy New Year!! It's that time again. I love to write New Year's resolutions. Somehow, seeing the resolutions in print makes me get more serious about them. If you're looking for some resolutions related to raising a reader, see my 10 Ways to Help You Raise Kids Who Love Reading. In my list are both a lot of strategies and some recommended books for parents, including The Read-Aloud Handbook, by reading aloud advocate Jim Trelease.

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, why not share some children's books about Abraham Lincoln and other resources with your kids. The Lincolns: A Scrapbook Look at Abraham and Mary, the biography of Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, is particularly appealing because the author, Candace Fleming, used period photographs, letters, engravings, cartoons and more to help create this nonfiction book. I was also pleased to learn through reading the Acknowledgments page how many scholars Fleming consulted with and how careful she was to have the entire contents of her book fact-checked before publication. I would recommend The Lincolns: A Scrapbook Look at Abraham and Mary as a reference book for tweens (ages 8-12), as well as teens and adults. It's the kind of book readers will enjoy dipping into again and again. For more recommended books, see Children's Books About Abraham Lincoln. Show your kids images of the actual Emancipation Proclamation signed by Lincoln and share Facts About the Emancipation Proclamation.

Have you seen the graphic novel adaptation of the classic novel A Wrinkle in Time? If you are a fan of the science fiction classic by Madeline L'Engle, you may be a little worried. However, librarian Jennifer Kendall has good news about A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel. If you and your kids have read the new book, let me know how you feel about it. I'd also like to know what you think of the 75th Anniversary Commemorative Edition of A Wrinkle in Time. To share your opinions, click on "Comments" below and share your opinions.

Sometime in late January or early February, schools all over the United States will hold 100th day celebrations. Many preschool, kindergarten and elementary school classes have 100th-day-of-school parties in celebration of completing the first 100 days of school. <p>Many teachers involve their students in a lot of counting activities as they prepare for the 100th day. There are some excellent <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/toppicks/ss/100daysofschool.htm">100 days picture books</a> about the first 100 days and 100th day celebrations. Two of my favorites are <i>Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten</i></a> and <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/toppicks/ss/100daysofschool_2.htm"><i>Jake's 100th Day of School</i></a>. A number of award-winning authors and illustrators of children's books died in 2012. Some of them include: <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://childrensbooks.about.com/cs/authorsillustrato/a/sendakartistry.htm">Maurice Sendak</a>, the author and illustrator of <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/cs/picturebooks/fr/wildthings.htm"><i>Where the Wild Things Are</i></a> and other acclaimed picture books, whose work has had a lasting impact on children's literature; Jean Craighead George, the Newbery Medal winner and honoree for <i>Julie of the Wolves</i> and <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/productreviews/fr/My-Side-Of-The-Mountain-By-Jean-Craighead-George.htm"><i>My Side of the Mountain</i></a> respectively; Else Holmelund Minarik, author of the Little Bear books illustrated by Maurice Sendak; <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/authorsillustrato/a/berenstainbears.htm"> Jan Berenstain</a>, co-creator of the Berenstain Bears series; New Zealand author Margaret Mahy; and artist Leo Dillon, who with his artistic partner and wife, Diane, won the Randolph Caldecott Medal for picture book illustration in both 1976 and 1977. <p>On a happier note, a number of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/awardwinners/ss/Best-Anniversary-Editions-of-Childrens-Books.htm">anniversary editions of children's books</a> were published in celebration of books that generations of children have enjoyed.

<b>Looking Ahead: 2013</b>
<b>Movies from Popular Books</b>
<br />With all the hype about the next movie based on The Hunger Games trilogy and its projected release on November 22, 2013, I think the interest in Suzanne Collins's books will continue, with particular interest in the second, <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/5youngadultbooks/fr/Catching-Fire-By-Suzanne-Collins-Book-Review.htm"><i>Catching Fire</i></a>, since that's the one the 2013 movie is based on. I think we'll see a similar interest in the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/middleschool/a/percy_olympians.htm">Percy Jackson and the Olympians</a> book series, with the release of the second movie based on the series, <i>Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters</i>, on August 16, 2013 and in J.R.R. Tolkien's book, <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/productreviews/fr/The-Hobbit-Book-Review.htm"><i>The Hobbit</i></a>, with the release of the second Hobbit movie, <i>The Hobbit: There and Back Again</i>, on December 13, 2013. Numerous sequential double-page spreads of dense pencil illustrations wordlessly move the reader through time, space, and the story, set in Paris, of Hugo Cabret, an orphan. Because 284 pages of this 525-page novel are pencil illustrations, reading <a href="http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/middleschool/fr/hugo_cabret.htm"><i>The Invention of Hugo Cabret</i></a> is like entering a 1930s black and white movie. <p>A movie version of the book, titled <i>Hugo</i>, was released in 2010 and is now available in DVD and Blu-ray. Brian Selznick wrote a fascinating book about the making of the movie, <i><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/productreviews/fr/Hugo-Movie-Companion-Invention-Of-Hugo-Cabret.htm">The Hugo Movie Companion</a>: A Behind the Scenes Look at How a Beloved Book Became a Major Motion Picture</i>, which I also recommend.
