    4. Anthony Horowitz to write new James Bond novel

    Anthony Horowitz

    Anthony Horowitz

Anthony Horowitz, author of the Alex Rider teenage spy novels, has been invited to write a new James Bond adventure by the Ian Fleming estate.

Currently dubbed Project One, the book will be set in the 1950s and contain previously unseen Fleming material.

Horowitz said Fleming’s hero had had “a profound influence” on his life adding: “This is a book I had to write.”

The material, an episode treatment for an unmade James Bond TV series, takes 007 into the world of motor racing.

Entitled Murder on Wheels, the treatment will serve as a starting point for Horowitz’s novel, to be published on 8 September 2015.

“When the estate approached me to write a new James Bond novel how could I possibly refuse?” said the 59-year-old, who was made an OBE in the New Year Honours.

“It’s a huge challenge… but having original, unpublished material by Fleming has been an inspiration.”

“In the 1950s, Ian Fleming wrote several episode treatments for a James Bond television series,” said Jessie Grimond, the author’s great-niece.

“But it never came to be made and he ended up turning most of the plots into the short stories that are now in the collections For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy and The Living Daylights.

“However, there are a few plot outlines which he never used and which, till now, have never been published, or aired.

“Given that Anthony is as brilliant a screenwriter as he is a novelist, we thought it would be exciting to see what he would do with one of them.”

    The Power of Five: Oblivion

    SHELDONIAN THEATRE  10:00am | Sunday 24 March 2013

    Choose this Ticket

Anthony Horowitz travelled to Antarctica’s frozen wilderness to research the setting for Oblivion, the epic conclusion to his bestselling teen fantasy series the Power of Five. It finds the Five – teenagers Matt, Pedro, Scott, Jamie and Scarlett – scattered in a hostile and dangerous world and struggling to re-group. The earth has almost been destroyed by the forces of darkness. Those who have survived are barely human, drifting in a world ruled by famine, terrorism and war. Any last hope now rests with these five extraordinary teenagers – the Gatekeepers. The Five must find each other and make a final stand against Chaos the King of the Old Ones . . . but Chaos is everywhere. He calls to them from Antarctica, where he is gathering his forces, preparing for a final battle in the frozen wasteland of Oblivion . . .

Horowitz is one of the most prolific and successful writers working in the UK – and is unique for working across so many media. He is a born polymath; juggling writing books, TV series, films, plays and journalism. He has written more than 35 books including the bestselling teenage spy series Alex Rider. He also writes for adults and was commissioned by the Conan Doyle estate to write a new Sherlock Holmes novel, The House of Silk. Horowitz is currently working with Stephen Spielberg and Peter Jackson writing the sequel to the Tintin film; and he has been involved in creating and writing leading television shows including award-winning drama series Foyle’s War, which has a new series airing on ITV this spring.

    19. Oblivion: Interview with Anthony at Bookzone 4 Boys Blog

I read somewhere that you feel Oblivion to be the best book you have written. What is it about Oblivion that makes it so special for you?

Partly, it’s the characters. I think Pedro, the Peruvian street urchin, and Scott, the American twin who sells out and goes bad are two of the most interesting and well-drawn characters I’ve ever created. Partly it’s the amount of action I’ve managed to pack into the book which takes place all over the world with volcano eruptions, drug lords, slave markets, battles on the ice etc, etc. But above all, I think the book is my most personal. It has something – vaguely – to say. That may not matter to you but it matters to me.

    20. Anthony Horowitz’s top 10 Apocalypse Books – The Guardian

Tieing in with yesterday’s launch of Oblivion, the final book in the Power of Five series, Anthony lists his top ten apocalyptic books.

Dystopia. Apocalypse. Death and destruction. There are two problems when you set out to write a book in this vein. The first is that you find yourself very limited as to what you can actually describe. After all, there are so many ways that the world can end – war, disease, alien invasion, zombification etc. And whatever the cause, the end result is going to be pretty much the same: mass starvation, anarchy, long-term suffering and slow death. Unless you’re writing a screwball comedy (and there have been attempts), there’s hardly going to be much variation in the mood of the book either.

    23. The House of Silk – Chosen by The Richard and Judy Book Club

Anthony’s Sherlock Holmes book The House of Silk has been featured on the Richard and Judy Book Club.

    From the Review:

“As to the story… well, if Conan Doyle could come back from the grave (something that as a firm believer in spiritualism and the power of mediums, he often threatened to do) he would certainly give Horowitz a warm, if spectral, handshake.”

“Horowitz spins an ever-more dramatic and dangerous story. What begins as a puzzle swiftly becomes a mystery with deeply sinister overtones. As Holmes and Watson become immersed in their investigations, they begin to hear the whispered words ‘the House of Silk’… what does the phrase mean? What links London’s foggy streets with the violent underworld that seethes in the American city of Boston?

This is quite simply one of the best detective mysteries I have read for a long time. Congratulations, Mr Horowitz. Can we have another one please?”
