1. Postcards from Abroad - March Update

I've finished the first batch of "Postcards from Abroad" (with the few exceptions I've intentionally waited to do). They were so much fun to make, drawing while battling the rocking motion of the train, using green tea as water for the watercolor, writing details about my trip, and awkwardly buying stamps at the post office. Thank you to the kind recipients for their sweet responses, photos, and blog posts about the postcards. Really made me smile.
Now, on to the next leg of my journey! Same rules apply--when ordering the postcards, please specify your preference (if any) for location.

March 1-3: Tacloban, Philippines
March 5-10: Thailand - Chiang Mai, Elephant Nature Park (illustrations from my previous visit)
March 11-18: Laos - Gibbon Experience (hopefully), boat ride along the Mekong River, Luang Prabang, Vientaine
March 18-20: Siem Reap
March 21-24: Singapore - for a wedding! :)

2. More silliness in Japan (mostly food)

The greatest hamburger-themed stickers Disney has ever produced.
Delicious izakaya in Tokyo with Merrick, Leo & KB. My favorite dishes were the kimchi udon pasta & the tofu cheesecake. YUM.
Gion Kitana, as recommended by Tara (formerly) of Sweet Breams. Make sure you get the dekitate, their fresh ice cream. So good.
Yakisoba at Mizuno, Osaka. Their okonomiyaki is out of this world. I discovered the restaurant by following two people in Osaka who seemed to be on a mission to eat. I do that when I travel. Not creepy.
 Sushidai in Tokyo.

Matcha green tea paste at Ippodo Tea, recommended by Yoko of Homako.
Kaboucha fried goodness.

Thanks to the lovely friends who sent suggestions and made our trip that much more delicious and delightful. Special shout to Merrick for housing KB & me, and teaching us some key Japanese words. Good host. Arigatou gozaimasu.

3. Temples & Totoro in Japan

In Kyoto, Kevin took me to Kanga-an Temple, a temple with a hidden bar once the sun goes down.
We sipped on Japanese whiskey (finally!!).
“The pace is slow here so it calms you down,” says Yamada [the bartender]. “It’s not the drinks, it’s the garden that relaxes you” (from the Japan Times).

After Kyoto, Kevin & I stayed in Eko-in Temple in Koyasan. The train ride was so pretty.
 Dinner.
Best tofu ever.
The view! It was nice to wander the halls and find random rooms and studies. The best parts were the fire ceremony in the morning, relaxing in the onsen, and the table in the room with an electric blanket as the tablecloth. Glorious. We basically lived under the table.

And then there was Totoro! I happened upon him many times before actually saying hello at the Ghibli Museum.

4. Hokkaido, Japan

I've been to Japan once before for the Sakura Festival. Next on my list was the Sapporo Snow Festival in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. Boy was it cold but beauuuuutiful (and delicious!).
The snow festival in Sapporo is well known, but there's also one in Asahikawa, the second largest city in Hokkaido. We got to see the ice artists in action chiseling, sawing, and brushing away the blocks of ice into gorgeous, tremendously detailed sculptures.
This Transformer tripled as a sculpture, a performance stage and, to the right, a gigantic slide! You sit your bum down on a piece of laminated newspaper with a loop of nylon rope and slide down 150 feet of ice into a pile of snow. So. Much. Fun.
Miso ramen from the original Santouka in Asahikawa. They have locations in CA, and even in the Philippines!
A piping hot bowl of broth and scallops for 400 yen. Yes please.

8am breakfast at Donburi Chaya in Sapporo.
Cheesy ramen at Karin in Furano.
Blue & brick building is Otaru Brewery. I had a "smoked" beer. Delicious. Worth a visit.
Genghis Khan lamb dinner at the Sapporo Biergarten (we already ate the lamb).
Kita No Ice Cream in Otaru. Left, uni & taro. Right, sake and squid ink. All very good.

Hokkaido is known for their dairy so if you do visit, please have cheese, caramels, hot milk & sake, and most importantly, vanilla soft serve ice cream. It is so very much unlike anything you'll ever taste (my favorite ice cream in the world), you will eat it walking through the snow, in 20 degree weather. It is that good. At least Kevin and I thought so :)

5. 2013: A Year of Travel & Renewal

I have yet to share my 2013 intentions because I didn't have any until an hour ago. I've been rushing around (doing a lot of nothing, which someone once told me I do a lot of). Of course this doesn't mean literally, but I do tend to stress myself out, running around doing work without really enjoying or being aware of the work I'm doing. Now I can sit down and really think about what 2012 meant to me, and how it will inspire a different, new year.

My personal goal for 2013 is to "have an adventure." This means traveling, trying new things, discovering new abilities and traits about myself. With the itinerary I've planned for myself, I think I can do it.

Business-wise, I find myself in a different position where growth doesn't mean doing more of something or making more of something. It means restructuring and redoing a lot of things I've been lazy about doing. It comes as a perfect time as I think my intention of adventure has pushed me to think outside of numbers and sales, and approach my business more abstractly and big picture. So, my 2013 business intention is "renewal." This means new website, refining my brand, new product photos, and sadly, retiring old prints and cards to make way for new ones.

The first four years were to prove I could make a living doing "art." Now that I know it's possible, it's time to find a way to do it more efficiently, in a way that minimizes stress, and maximizes happiness (mine and yours!) and creativity. I do think there's a correlation between happiness and productivity, so if all goes according to plan, expect sweeter, more refined art in the months and years to come.

6. Sukiyabashi Jiro

Sukiyabashi Jiro!! We did it!!

Kevin and I waffled back and forth a bit about starting our trip to Japan on such a high (and expensive!) note, but we figured, why not! We love sushi so much, and after having late night, mediocre sushi in Asakusa, we were eager to have the real deal.

If you're unfamiliar with Jiro Ono, I highly recommend watching "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," a documentary about the greatest living sushi chef and the best sushi bar in the world. You'll appreciate sushi as a dazzling art, its preparation as a well measured and precise performance, and come to love an old man who is so meticulous with his craft. I watched the documentary in theatres, followed by a Q&A with the director, David Gelb.  He discussed visiting other sushi chefs and bars in search of a story, so I wondered, was it really the best sushi he had ever had? He didn't pick my raised hand but at least I now have my own answer to that question.

We visited the Roppongi location where the younger son, Takashi Jiro, runs the show, not the infamous Ginza location where 86 year-old papa Jiro Ono works. This location has two Michelin stars, as opposed to three Michelin stars at Ginza, but they take English-speaking guests. Win! We were also able to make our lunch reservations the day of through the kindness of our hostel.

To answer some immediate questions you may have:

1. It was the most expensive meal I've ever had--$48,000 yen ($512 USD) for both of us, just green tea, at lunch time. Dinner costs more because there are more "courses."
2. It was worth every yen.
3. It was the best sushi I've ever had. Honestly, the best meal I've ever had in my life. Sorry, mom.

First of all, when you make a reservation (which you should), they warn you of their 10,000 yen cancelation fee if you change it less than 2 hours prior or don't show.  Second, the location was actually a little tough to find. It's in the back corner of a fancy shopping area, Roppongi Hills. Perhaps the construction made it difficult to navigate, but certainly their maps were not very helpful. Ask the information guide (look for someone in a smart, black suit and a red band on their arm that says "information") to direct you through the maze of high end shops and restaurants.

Kevin & I got there early and nervously waited outside until it was 12:25 pm (reservation at 12:30 pm). Upon entering, they took our coats and seated us at the end of the bar. There were two groups there before us. The day revealed that we were the last of their lunch guests. The staff makes it a point to memorize who is coming so there's no glancing at paper. Serious stuff.

I unfortunately don't have any photos of the meal (no one was taking pictures and I didn't want to be THAT person), but you'll have to take my word for it and know that it was beautiful.  They asked us if we wanted to start with sashimi or go straight to sushi (nigiri). SASHIMI!! I'm so glad we did, too. Something new I'd never had before was bloody crab sashimi. It had a similar texture to squid or clam, but very sweet and somewhat delicate. I think it's a rare item because I can't seem to find a photo of it via google. After three sashimi dishes, we moved on to our 15 courses of nigiri. We had ika (so delicious & perfect), anago (it melted in your mouth!), uni (my favorite and the best, fresh from Hokkaido), prawns, tuna, mackerel, scallops, fish I'd never heard of and can't remember, etc etc. There was rhythm to the way Takashi Jiro artfully brushed the soy sauce on each piece and pressed the fish and rice together with two fingers.  Occasionally, he instructed in a low voice, "no soy sauce". The wasabi was freshly grated in front of us. The chefs were straight up perfectionists, not shy about sending  less than perfect cuts back to the kitchen. Their tomago was like a sweet, moist sponge cake rather than anything that resembled an egg omelet. I wanted to cry because I realized I had only been eating carbon copies of the real thing. I actually did get teary eyed. Food so good that it makes you emotional. Or I'm just emotional :P

The folks next to us probably ordered two or three times as much as we did. How the heck did they fit so much food! All in all, the meal has a steep price tag but it's worth it. Not only are you eating the best sushi, you're watching masters of the craft in their element. Do visit. At least just once. It's a spiritual experience of sorts or something.

7. Away to Japan & South Korea we go!

Yeeeeeee!!! Tomorrow I leave for Osaka with Kevin joining me Saturday in Tokyo.

I had planned to close the online shops but because of the Postcard from Abroad listing, as noted by Justine (thank you thank you!), the Etsy shop will remain open. But do note: all items ordered after JAN 30 will ship AFTER FEB 18. If you order in error a refund can be issued, but please do keep the shipping date in mind when ordering.

Our itinerary:
Jan 31-Feb 2: Osaka
Feb 2-5: Tokyo (Ghibli Museum on Feb. 4)
Feb 5-8: Sapporo (snow festival yeee!)
Feb 8-9: Kyoto
Feb 10: Shirakawa-go
Feb 11: Koyasan
Feb 12-13: Osaka
Feb 13-17: South Korea (not sure what we're doing. Kevin's handling the itinerary.)

I'm detailing the itinerary for those interested in ordering a "Postcard from Abroad" while I'm in any of those locations. Make sure to include a note if you have a preference for a subject/location.

OK, I'm off to pack. See you in Japan & South Korea!

8. Salutations from the Philippines

I made it to Manila! Took me a few days to get over the jet lag but I'm okay now. Home for the next 3 or so months is Makati City, a hub for ex-pats, commerce & business, and ridiculous malls. I was here last time I visited & stayed in the Philippines and I can't tell you enough how comforting it is to come "home" to a familiar place. Also, having wifi, ESPN to keep up with NBA games, and a Seattle's Best Coffee down the street isn't terrible either. To counter the uncomfortably long flight, I treated myself to a bamboo stick massage where they essentially rolled my muscles with bamboo as if it was a rolling pin. Somewhat painful but damn I feel good.

Not having to oversee my online store and worry about replenishing inventory has opened up a great deal of free time so I've been able to paint again. Here's what I came up with. Enjoy!
I'll keep drawing & sharing, and readying for my next stop: Japan!

Few quick things to note:
Follow along on the blog, instagram and twitter. I'll be sketching lots :)
Receive an original, illustrated postcard from my travels.
The shop will stay open while I'm gone, courtesy of Kevin Biggers, but no custom work or tin can cards/prints.

I've been waiting & working for two years for these next two years of travel and fun. Ahhhhh! SO EXCITED. See you!

11. Big Changes are coming!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you're well over your hangovers and kicking 2013 resolution booty!
Happy 2013 to you all! I hope you've set great goals and hopes for the new year. I certainly have for myself and the business. In fact, I'm in the middle of preparing for a rather big change--I'm leaving the country for 5 months & taking the business (to an extent) and YOU (if you'll let me) with me!

For those who don't know, I have a system where I work for two years and then travel for two years, rinse repeat. 2013 marks the beginning of two years of adventuring. I've shared my tentative schedule above in case anyone cares to meet, eat, draw, or perhaps exchange room & board for an original painting :).  I'll be detailing my travels via instagram and my blog.

What does that mean for the business? Introducing KEVIN BIGGERS!! My handy-dandy, partner-in-crime has so generously offered to manage my online stores (big cartel & etsy) in my absence. He's not a stranger to the scene. You may know him as that Asian boy with glasses in my illustrations or the fella who accompanies me to almost all my craft fairs. Still unsure? Read more about him here (it's an entertaining read!).

He'll also be joining me for a portion of my travels during which the online stores will be closed (Feb. 1-17)so order those Valentine goodies sooner rather than later. I've been working like crazy to ready for his take over. I think I've made enough inventory to last til May but if not, I'll replenish again when I return. So if something is sold out, it will be sold out until May.

CUSTOM ORDERS
Sorry I will not be taking any custom requests while I travel (unless we've previously discussed it). This includes paintings, alterations to prints, wedding materials, and even Tin Can prints & Tin Can cards. The Tin Canprints & cards will be available until Jan. 14. However, I will be offering a special, one-of-a-kind item while I adventure abroad...

POSTCARDS FROM ABROAD!
I'll be offering postcards with an original illustration & note so you can follow me along my journey. When you purchase the postcard will determine what I draw. For example, you might want to order one on Feb. 3rd, the day before I go to the Ghibli Museum in Japan. Or you may want an illustration inspired by "The Hobbit" while I'm trekking through New Zealand. Or an illustration inspired by the Sapporo Snow Festival. Oh the possibilities! The postcards will only be $8 each & there's no limit to the number you can order. Help keep me busy :)

I have a few brand new things in the shop: two new Birthday Cards (boy & girl versions available), Rawr rubber stamplittle girl stamp, and Clink-inspired, mushy cards galore.  The Valentine's Day perforated cards are back in the shop, as well, and I still have a couple 2013 Calendars left in stock. I have a new Miss You card inspired by the long distance relationship I'm about to embark on with Kevin and with all of you :wipes a tear:.

Okay that's all for now. See you on the road & across the sea!

12. Meet Kevin Biggers

Have you ever wondered about the Asian boy with glasses who keeps popping up in my illustrations? Well, he's Kevin Biggers! You may have met him at one of my craft fairs, but don't fret, you'll be able to get to know him more now. He's stepping up and taking care of my online stores while I adventure abroad for 5 months. So if you notice a handwriting change in the thank you notes, that's why :)

I asked him a few questions so you can help get to know him a little better. Have a read!

What do you enjoy in your free time?
I enjoy reading, both the internet and real books. I like to write fiction occasionally and I hope to write more frequently and more consistently in the near future. I like biking a bunch. I watch a lot of sports and I read a lot about sports and I think a lot about sports. Particularly, baseball, basketball, and football. My favorite teams in those respective sports: the Seattle Mariners, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the players on my fantasy football team. I like good food as opposed to bad food. The most important non-human thing in my life is calmness.

Thoughts on biking?
I'd say biking has gradually become my favorite facet of living in LA. The idea of transit in this city being actually fun and an actual form of meaningful exercise seems like a wholly and simply good thing rather than a partially and complicatedly good thing which most good things, in my opinion, are. Finding the fastest and/or most accommodating route from your point of origin to your point of destination seems in a small but somewhat meaningful way thrilling and also vaguely artistic in its varying degrees of improvisation. I enjoy the varying formlessness of the roadway infrastructure for bicyclists. For some reason, I am wary about the idea of more bike paths and something that would be labelled a "safer" structure to biking throughout the city. I like it how it is now.

I also find it somewhat nice being able to ride through and see parts of the city I otherwise in a car would have no reason to encounter and experience. For instance, I frequently use my bike to commute from where I live in Los Feliz to where I work in Sherman Oaks. This commute takes me through areas with which I had little to no prior experience: the LA River via its somewhat new bike path, Burbank and Toluca Lake via Riverside Drive, and Studio City via Moorpark Street. Now I know that the LA River Bike Path in spring and summer offers one of the nicest low-key evening bike rides in the city. And I'm now aware of a bowling alley in Burbank with a $1.50-a-game morning special on Tuesday and Thursday which feels deep down like a nice thing to know. And now I'm able to stop by this really tremendous sandwich and dessert shop in Toluca Lake called Sweet Salt (disclaimer: Genevieve is friends with the dessert chef here) whenever I want without enduring one of the the freeways. These things and other things related to biking seem very good as opposed to very bad, which is nice.

What have you learned or observed from helping Le Petit Elefant?
One thing I think about is the balance Genevieve has struck and is continuing to strive to strike between both running a thriving business and feeling nourished as an artist. I think anytime you (the proverbial you) introduce art into an environment of commerce, you (the proverbial you) can from time to time become vulnerable to conflating the value and worthwhileness of your art with the amount of money it generates for you, which, as far as I can see, sows the seed for possible alienation between you and your art. I think Genevieve does a great job of continually reminding herself how fun and exciting and meaningful her art can be for her outside of the context of business while at the same time, continuing to embrace and develop a thriving business. Neither idea seems ever far from her mind, which seems like a very good way of maintaining that balance.

Why do you come to so many craft fairs? Don't you want to enjoy your weekend?
I like working craft fairs because I enjoy observing and participating in Genevieve's business' in-person commerce. I've never worked a retail job so I've missed, in my opinion, the quintessential life experience of observing people up close and over a substantial period of time making decisions to buy things from a specific entity and discerning trends from these observations and further, applying this knowledge to an improved experience for both the business and its consumers. I find this interesting, just I guess watching how people make decisions about your art.

However, I think way more importantly, I enjoy watching Genevieve do well and be happy and feel good as I feel like she is when she's interacting with customers in person. It's pretty fun to watch and be a part of.

How do you feel about being drawn (hehe)?
I don't know if I like being drawn in general, I mean I don't mind it but I certainly like if not love Genevieve's drawings/illustrations/depictions of me.

Excited for your upcoming trip to Japan & South Korea?
I'm not really interested in just travelling to Japan and Korea once and then moving on to other countries but rather I'm interested in seeing if travelling throughout Japan and Korea cultivates a desire for subsequent trips, perhaps, hopefully, to the same cities and places over and over again. I had a similar experience growing up in visiting LA (from New Jersey) every year to stay with my uncle. Getting to see how one actually went about living day-to-day in LA fascinated me. Getting to know LA better and better felt cool. I don't have any special insight, at this point in time, into whether or not Japan and/or Korea possess the potential for this kind of process or experience or whatever, but I think they both seem pretty cool, in a general sense. All in all, I'd say I'm excited to use the internet in Korea and I'm excited to eat in Japan and any other expectations I'm trying to suppress as much as possible because expectations are the devils of experience, etc. etc.

15. A Weekend of Craft Fairs!

It's been a strange goal of mine to do two craft fairs in the same weekend and this Saturday and Sunday, my dreams are coming true. I'll be vending in person at Bazaar Bizarre in San Francisco, while Kevin (with my former intern Jackie on Saturday, and partner-in-calendar-crime, Victoria of Paper & Type on Sunday) will taking care of business at Unique LA in downtown Los Angeles. It's been utter mayhem preparing for two simultaneous fairs and planning booth set ups but I'm excited it's finally here. Come say hello!

New for the SF fair: narwhal & elephant chalkboard ornaments, 5x7 Holiday Clink print, framed prints, and yes, they're back... plush muffs! I'll be bringing the full range of goodies next weekend to Renegade Craft Fair LA, so don't stress if you miss this weekend. Kevin will be happy to see you though :)

21. See you this Saturday at Roadworks SF!

I'll be vending this Saturday from 12pm-5pm in San Francisco for the 9th Annual Roadworks: A Steamroller Printing Festival. It's unlike anything I've ever seen (and have yet to see because this is my first time attending the event), but there will be a three-ton construction steamroller making large-scale prints on the actual street. Pretty nutty!! So if you're a printing geek, this should be right up your alley.

I'll be there with the usual printed goods, and debuting my chalkboards & the brand new 2013 Calendar. Come by and celebrate the Autumnal Equinox!

22. Save the Date: Growing Up Geek Solo Show - Oct 20

Yay! I'm having my first official solo show at Sweet Breams in San Mateo, and it's all original work bearing my nerdy soul to you all. Inspired by true events--like being a Trekkie for Halloween in the 4th grade, my wildly unhealthy obsession with Dr. Mario, and actually owning the "I Want To Believe" poster from The X-Files--the pieces are a peek into my childhood of video games, comics, and sci-fi.

I would love for you all to come to the opening reception. I'll be there in person selling my wares like I would at a craft fair, and unveiling the original work, new prints, a limited edition Doctor Who-inspired line of cards & prints, as well as giving away laser cut charms to the attendees (if you're a Whovian, you'll love it!). I can't wait! :D

23. I'm on vacation!

I've a feeling we're not in California anymore. Go with your feeling because I'm in New York City. I make an annual trip in the fall to see the pretty leaves & have a breather before the holidays. Instead of autumn leaves, I witnessed the first snow of the season. Just as pretty.

The online shops (both Etsy & BigCartel) are closed & will be up & running again on 11/12. In the meantime, here's a 2013 Calendar contest just for you, and you can follow my trip via instagram.

24. Calendar Giveaway: How Does Your Garden Grow?

Happy November! We're two months away from the new year and even closer to the first day of winter, but let's think green for a moment.

When Victoria of Paper & Type and I were brainstorming themes for our 3rd collaborative calendar, many delightful ideas came to mind but one stood out in particular: growth. Victoria has a greener thumb than I do-I don't grow anything in my garden-but one of my favorite childhood memories was Community Garden Day in Kindergarten. Everyone was assigned to bring flower bulbs, seeds, gardening tools and supplies and for one whole day, we got our hands dirty in soil and seedlings. Did I love gardening because it was a respite from forming simple sentences in class? Probably. But growing up, I was also obsessed with "The Secret Garden" and loved the idea of having a secret haven to explore all to myself. Even the gang of Community took the idea and made it their own:

I digress! I thought about what my secret garden would be like, and I imagined it as a mix between Willy Wonka's chocolate factory garden (but substitute chocolate with ice cream & cookies), a Japanese zen garden, & Gaudi's Park Güell in Barcelona. And I kind of like the idea of a trampoline:

Now it's giveaway time: What you would grow in your garden?

*Email/tweet/blog comment/fb your answer for an opportunity to win the 2013 Calendar by Genevieve Santos + Paper & Type. I'll be giving away two calendars: one winner will be chosen randomly, & the second winner will have my favorite answer. Contest ends Sunday, November 11th at 11:59pm PST, & winners will be announced November 12.

You can be as silly and goofy as you wish. In fact, I welcome it. And get creative! Write a haiku, a short description, or draw a picture. Good luck!

25. Holiday Schedule + Solo Show at Art Boutiki

As you can see, I'm sticking to relatively sunny California this holiday season for my craft tour. I didn't want to travel too much before my big 6-month voyage abroad. I might spoil my dinner :P

I have a solo show at Art Boutiki in San Jose this Friday as part of the South First Fridays Art Walk in downtown. I'm super excited & very honored to be showing there because Art Boutiki happens to be one of my favorite galleries on the map during the art walk. They'll be making shirts of my designs on the spot, and I'll be there hosting a pop up shop. It's the only way I can be social with strangers without being too awkward. There will be live music, food & drinks and lots of neighboring galleries to explore and drunkenly stumble into. This will be my only South Bay appearance for the holidays so stock up on Christmas gifts, cards, ornaments and other goodies while you can!
