Board Book: Jingle Bells. James Lord Pierpont. Illustrated by Pauline Siewert. 2015. Candlewick. 14 pages. [Source: Review copy]
First sentence: Jingle bells! Jingle bells! Jingle all the way! Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.
Premise/plot: A board book adaptation of the familiar holiday song "Jingle Bells." The illustrations feature a family of bears going on a sleigh ride. Little ones can press the button and hear the song.
My thoughts: I enjoyed it. This family of bears is going on a sleigh ride. But on their sleigh ride they are joined by other animals: some squirrels, some badgers, some bunnies, a fox, an owl, etc. (The owl isn't the only bird making its way through the woods.) I loved the last illustration of all the animals gathered around a Christmas tree singing together as Santa in his sleigh passes by overhead.

The Runaway Santa: A Christmas Adventure Story Written by Anne Margaret Lewis Illustrated by Aaron Zenz Sky Pony Press 11/03/2015 978-1-63450-589-1 32 pages Ages 3—6 “Once there was a jolly Santa who wanted to leave the North Pole on an adventure before Christmas! Happy Thanksgiving! It snowed here and so we had a white Thanksgiving. I love the snow.
I also love digital painting. When I was a kid taking art, digital wasn’t a thing. All the art supplies were sooo expensive and messy, and if you messed up, you had to start all over again. Now you can try and do billion different styles and colors…I sure am grateful for that.
Anyway, here’s a piece that I’ve been meaning to do all year ^_^
I drew it for my sweet Instagram buddy, Nerdpoppins. She loves Mary Poppins as much as I do! You should check out her etsy shop–so many amazing MP things!
She was also the host of this year’s “Mary Poppins in the Park”–a Mary Poppins day at Disneyland. I went and it was so much fun. Every dressed Mary Poppins-y and THE Mary and Bert came (!!!) Everyone had a great time.
Nerdpoppins is on the right…my sis is in the middle, and I’m on Bert’s arm, dying. (Isn’t the skirt beautiful? It was sewn & hand-painted by Nerdpoppins. I’m in awe.)
Speaking of that event, I gave out a limited edition print to the attendees! And I have some left over!
Would you like this sweet little 5×7 print? I’m gonna mail it out to the first 50 commenters! Here’s how to play:
1 – Leave a numbered comment of something you’re grateful for. (So, if the comment before you says it’s #12, you would write #13.) (If you are reading this from tumblr, you’ll want to comment here, on the actual blog.)
2 – If your comment is below 50, send your mailing address to storyboarder{at}gmail.com (That’s me!) And I’ll send you the print right away!
I hope everyone’s Thanksgiving was the best ^_^

A Very Special Christmas Tree is a picture book that helps spread the “true meaning” of Christmas.
Harold at the North Pole. Crockett Johnson. 1958. HarperCollins. 48 pages. [Source: Library]
First sentence: It was Christmas Eve, and Harold had to have a Christmas tree before Santa Claus arrived.
Premise/plot: It's Christmas Eve and Harold needs a Christmas tree. With his purple crayon in hand, Harold's adventure begins. He's in search of a tree, so he must draw stars and woods and SNOW. Because he was a little TOO enthusiastic about the snow, Harold finds himself at the North Pole, and, Santa is snowed in. Can Harold draw Santa out of trouble?
My thoughts: This one is so cute and charming. I loved the text. I loved the illustrations. I loved the scene where Harold draws the reindeer and harnesses them up to Santa's sleigh. Have you read this one? What did you think?

Today is a special treat for me. I love the Monster & Me series by Paul Czajak and Wendy Grieb. Last year, I missed bringing you Monster and Boy’s Christmas story and Monster’s first party. So today I am giving you both. Consider it an early gift: a mashed-up double review. A first time venture …
I have some more Christmas designs from Paperchase to showcase today - starting with this washi tape design spotted on wrapping paper and crackers. The washi tape strips make up colourful Christmas trees on gridded paper. Also posted below are more decorations in a rainbow of neon and colour, along with some gift wrap and tags that caught my eye at this year Paperchase.
With Halloween and Bonfire Night now passed I thought it was safe to begin thinking about Christmas design. So we begin this week with a look at some of the 2015 festive offerings from Paperchase. The design I liked the look of most this year were these cute but stylish geometric characters on wrapping paper and a set of small boxed cards....
And also catching my eye this fun
And here are a few more cards selected from the Paperchase 2015 Christmas range.

Do you bite off more than you can chew? One’s tendency for this disparity amplifies at Christmas time, at least, mine does. However, it’s not just at the festive table that choice and over-indulgence can be paralysing. The lead-up to my favourite time of the year is where many choke. The solution? Planning. Break needs, […]

All I Want For Christmas Is You. Mariah Carey. Illustrated by Colleen Madden. 2015. Random House. 32 pages. [Source: Review copy]
First sentence:
I don't want a lot for Christmas. There is just one thing I need.Premise/plot: Using the lyrics of Mariah Carey's Christmas song, "All I Want For Christmas is You," a holiday-themed love story is told to readers. The love story is between a little girl and a puppy. For it is a PUPPY that she's dreaming of this holiday season.
My thoughts: The illustrations are by Colleen Madden. In my opinion, the illustrations do most of the work of telling the story. Chances are--adults and children alike--are already familiar, very familiar, with the lyrics of the song. The interest comes from the story told by the illustrations. How do the illustrations convey emotion and story? And how well do they do that?
I enjoyed the illustrations. I did. I liked following the little girl throughout the holiday season. Readers see her in all her festive activities: shopping, crafting, baking, playing in the snow, skating, singing, visiting friends and family, etc. One of my favorite spreads shows that while all the other children are making snowmen, she's making a dog out of snow. He has pine cone ears. And he's just adorable.

The Night Before Christmas. Clement Clarke Moore. Illustrated by David Ercolini. 2015. [September] 32 pages. [Source: Review copy]
First sentence: 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.
Premise/plot: A classic holiday poem has been published with new illustrations.
My thoughts: Love the original poem. I do. But do I love the poem paired with these new illustrations? I can't say that I do. The illustrations are certainly odd and unique. Very taste specific, I'd say! The illustrations are quite detailed, very, very busy. This family doesn't just decorate for Christmas. They DECORATE. For example, they hang ornaments on their lamp shades. For me, I thought it was a little too much. I didn't really like it. But other readers may enjoy it.

Katie's London Christmas. James Mayhew. 2014. 32 pages. [Source: Library]
First sentence: It was Christmas Eve, and Katie and Jack were fast asleep at Grandma's house.
Premise/plot: Katie and her brother help Father Christmas deliver presents in and around London. They are helping because Father Christmas has a horrid cold. Readers are along for the journey, and thereby learn a little bit about places to go and see in London.
My thoughts: I liked this one well enough. I didn't love it. I didn't find it oh-so-charming. But I liked it. I have a vague memory of meeting Katie in other picture books. That is one reason why I checked out this new book. But I seem to remember liking the other Katie books better. Perhaps if your child really enjoys the author's other books, then this one would be a good match.

About the Author: Angela Muse
Angela Muse was born in California to a military family. This meant that she got used to being the “new kid” in school every couple of years. It was hard trying to make new friends, but Angela discovered she had a knack for writing. In high school Angela began writing poetry and song lyrics. Expressing herself through writing seemed very natural. After becoming a Mom in 2003, Angela continued her storytelling to her own children. In 2009 she wrote and published her first rhyming children’s book aimed at toddlers. Since then she has released several more children’s picture books and released her first young adult romance series, The Alpha Girls.
Angela’s husband, Ben Muse writes suspense/thriller books that can also be found on Amazon.
