Ferguson Library Director Scott Bonner recently headlined a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) session. During the conversation, he revealed that John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars is one of the most popular young adult books at his library.
A few hours later, Green joined in with this message: “Hi hi! John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars here. Signed copies of all my books headed your way!”
Here’s more from Mashable: “Scott Bonner, the library’s director, shared his gratitude for the gesture during the AMA, but he also divulged how his staff is coping with the increased need for services, how the library functions monetarily as well as some personal tidbits about his love for table-top role-playing games (think Dungeons & Dragons).”
In addition to this gift from Green, the institution has received over $175,000. More than 7,000 people have sent in monetary donations.

Universal Pictures has optioned two of Gayle Forman’s young adult novels, Just One Day and Just One Year.
Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, the creators of The Gossip Girl TV show, will serve as producers for this project. Penguin Young Readers Group released the first book in January 2013 and the second book followed in October 2013.
Here’s more from The Hollywood Reporter: “Just One Day and Just One Year follows the story of a young couple who meet and share one incredible day (and night) together only to be separated, spending the next year looking for each other and finding themselves along the journey…The books have been described as being in the tone of Before Sunrise and 500 Days of Summer.”

A teaser trailer has been unveiled for the Insurgent movie adaptation. A Facebook announcement has drawn more than 6,800 “likes.” The video embedded above features actress Shailene Woodley reprising her role as Beatrice “Tris” Prior. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second movie in the Divergent film franchise will hit theaters on March 20, 2015.

Melissa de la Cruz plans to write a spinoff project inspired by her Witches of East End adult novels. Penguin Young Readers Group will release Triple Moon: Summer on East End, the first installment of de la Cruz’s young adult series, on July 14, 2015.
The Triple Moon story stars twin witches named Mardi and Molly Overbrook. Two characters from the original book series and the TV show, Freya and Killian Gardiner, will appear in the new books.
With Lifetime’s Witches of East End TV series facing cancellation, de la Cruz wants to take a hands-on approach to help her fans. In a statement emailed to Entertainment Weekly, de la Cruz explains: “I have asked producers if there is no hope for the show, if I can weave in some of the cliffhangers from season two so I can resolve them and bring closure. I have an idea on how to do it, but we’ll see. It’s a legal issue so it might not be able to fly.”

Lionsgate has unveiled the final trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One. The video embedded above features a “burning” message from rebel Katniss Everdeen to the villainous President Snow—what do you think?
Thus far, the trailer has drawn more than 26,000 “like” on Facebook. Throughout the past few months, several promotional videos have surfaced for this movie including two “Panem Addresses,” a clip, and a teaser trailer.

Constantin Film plans to create a TV show based on the Mortal Instruments books. Last year, the movie studio released a movie version of the first installment in Cassandra Clare’s young adult series, City of Bones.
The story for the TV show will follow the plot from City of Bones. No announcements have been made as to whether or not the stars of the film adaptation, Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower, will come on board for this project to reprise their roles as Clary Fray and Jace Wayland.
According to the press release, Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, two filmmakers who worked on the feature film, will serve as executive producers for the TV show. Ed Decter has signed on as the showrunner.

Three actors have joined the cast for the Paper Towns movie adaptation. Austin Abrams, Halston Sage, and Justice Smith will portray Ben, Lacey, and Radar.
These characters share a friendship with the lead protagonist Quentin (played by Nat Wolff). The story, based on John Green’s popular young adult novel, follows Quentin and his buddies who embark on a journey after a classmate named Margo (played by Cara Delevinge) mysteriously disappears.
Back in March, Green announced that he would take on the role of executive producer. The Wrap reports that Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber, Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, and Isaac Klausner will all serve as producers for this project. Neustadter and Weber are also working on the screenplay together.

Margaret Stohl will write a young adult novel starring the Black Widow.
The announcement was made during the “Woman of Marvel” panel at New York Comic Con. The book is slated for release in 2015.
According to ComicsBeat.com, Stohl feels that this project “is the badassiest thing I’ve ever been asked to work on in my life. Black Widow is the very best hot mess I know. She kicks ass, she’s more of a Wolverine than a Captain America.”

During her talk at the New Yorker Festival, filmmaker Lena Dunham revealed that she plans to work on a movie adaptation of Catherine, Called Birdy.
Dunham (pictured, via) will pen the script. She also hopes to serve as the director for this project.
According to BuzzFeed, this Karen Cushman novel features a story that “is told through diary entries written by a British 12-year-old named Catherine in the year 1290. The book was awarded the prestigious Newbery Medal.” Who would you cast as young Catherine?

HarperCollins Children’s Books will re-issue Kiera Cass’ self-published young adult novel, The Siren. The publisher will release the book with a new cover and bonus material in Winter 2016.
According to Cass’ blog post, this allows her “to go back through with my editor and make it the story I always hoped it could be. It will sparkle in ways I couldn’t make it on my own, and that makes me crazy happy!” The book follows This story follows a young girl named Kahlen and her communion with the ocean.

The Weinstein Company has snatched up the film rights to the forthcoming young adult title, Every Exquisite Thing by Matthew Quick (pictured, via). Back in 2012, the film studio produced a highly popular adaptation of Quick’s adult book, Silver Linings Playbook.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story in the new book “follows a goody-two-shoes student-athlete who starts to get in touch with her wild side after reading a cult classic novel.” Little, Brown Books For Young Readers will release Every Exquisite Thing in Spring 2016.

HarperCollins will publish a collector’s edition of Divergent on October 21, 2014. In the video embedded above, author Veronica Roth shares details about this book.
Roth reveals that she wrote two essays for this project; one is about an alternate beginning with Tobias “Four” Eaton as the star protagonist and the second focuses on Caleb Prior. Other special features include fan art, an excerpt from the Divergent movie script, and a poster.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Carl Hiaasen talked recently to Newsday about bringing Skink — the beloved vigilante ex-gov of Florida whose unique brand of swamp-justice has made him a star of six Hiaasen adult novels — to YA readers “before he got too old and cranky.”
Long listed for the 2014 National Book Award, Hiaasen’s first book for teens, Skink No Surrender, features the ragged, one-eyed renegade helping 14-year-old Richard rescue his teenage cousin Malley, who has run off into trouble with an older guy she met on the Internet.
Why Skink for kids? Hiaasen told Newsday:
“Skink knows his way around the wilderness. That’s the kind of person you want with you if you’re trying to do a rescue. He’s his own scruffy version of SEAL Team Six. Kids like characters who can sometimes defy authority if it’s for a good cause. Skink is not a model citizen. But he does have character traits. He does have honor. He does have a strong moral compass. These are all good things for kids to find in a character. I’ve had people show up at book signings dressed as him. They’ll have a shower cap and an eye patch.”
When asked how he managed to capture and maintain the voice of a 14 year old writing in first person as Richard, Hiaasen answers, “I’m lucky because I’ve got a built-in test market in the family. One of the things that you learn as a reporter, or you better learn, is you learn to listen. Driving kids around in a car, you listen to how kids talk, the cadence, what they’re talking about.”
In Skink No Surrender, Newsday’s Beth Whitehouse notes, Hiaasen emphasizes the importance of the environment and protecting species. Skink hands Richard a copy of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring.
“Silent Spring is an important book. It’s as important a book now as it was in the ’60s. I’m not proselytizing about it. If five kids go read that book, those five kids are going to be changed by it. But I don’t do it in a preachy way. I do it in a casual way.”
Carl Hiaasen has read his audience right. Skink No Surrender is set to debut on the New York Times bestseller list this weekend.

Lions Gate will host a contest for aspiring female directors to create short films based on characters from Stephenie Meyers’ Twilight saga. The participants will consult Meyers’ 2011 encyclopedic tome, The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide.
Deadline reports that five winners will be selected to receive production advances to finance their short films. The five installments of “The Storytellers — New Creative Voices of ‘The Twilight Saga’” series will be released exclusively on Facebook in 2015. From there, fans will vote on which filmmaker deserves a grand prize which includes cash and career opportunities.
Here’s more from The New York Times: ”A group of female panelists, including the Twilight actress Kristen Stewart and Ms. Meyer, will select the winning shorts and mentor participants, Lions Gate said. Other panelists include the actresses Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer and Julie Bowen; Catherine Hardwicke, who directed the first Twilight movie; the film producer Cathy Schulman; and Jennifer Lee, who co-directed Frozen. Certain contest details, including the length of the shorts, are still being worked out and will be made available on Tongal.com, a crowdsourcing platform.”

John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars has been banned in the middle schools within the Riverside Unified School District (based in California).
Vanity Fair reports that a parent named Karen Krueger raised a complaint against the popular young adult novel because she “felt the morbid plot, crude language, and sexual content was inappropriate for her children.” Krueger convinced a committee of educators and guardians put it to a vote which resulted in this act of censorship.
Green shared his reaction to this situation on Tumblr. He claims to feel both happy and sad; the sadness comes from a desire “to introduce the idea that human beings die to the children of Riverside, California and thereby crush their dreams of immortality.” What do you think?

Delacorte Press, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, has scheduled The Fever Code for publication in 2016. According to the press release, this new story “delves into the time before the Maze, and will tell the story of how Thomas, Teresa, and the Gladers found themselves in the Maze, and how the Maze itself was created.”
Publisher Beverly Horowitz negotiated the deal with Michael Bourret, vice president of Dystel & Goderich Literary Management. Executive editor Krista Marino will edit the manuscript.

Writer R.L. Stine plans to re-boot his popular Fear Street book series. The last Fear Street title was published back in 1999.
St Martin’s Griffin will release Party Games on September 30th. In an interview with MartiniProductionsNY, Stine revealed that he has 6 more Fear Street books planned for the future. We’ve embedded his announcement on Twitter below.
