26. New England SCBWI Conference 2012 - thanks for the votes!

What a great conference! SCBWI New England really pulled it out of the bag this time.

3 great days at Springfield, MA. Over 500 attended and the faculty line up was amazing! Highlights included Harry Bliss, Dan Yaccarino, Harold Underdown, Kate Messner, Jane Yolen, Cynthia Lord, Brian Lies, Heidi Stemple, Jo Knowles ... on and on ... you can check out just what the line up was at http://www.nescbwi.org/.

If you are hoping to write or illustrate for children - you can't do better than attend an SCBWI conference and New England is one of the best. In the three years I have been a member it's given me invaluable information, education, contacts and networking opportunities. And best of all - friends who relate to my goals and frustrations. So I say thank you to the organizers and volunteers!

I travelled with Russ Cox (friend and fellow illustrator) from Maine on Friday and it was straight into the deep end with a great 'meet and greet' with top-hole artists and writers at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst. (My first visit and a beautiful venue.)

Before we knew it Sunday rolled around ... and it was time to say goodbye. Russ and I returned to Maine in triumph ... Russ swept the board with two first prizes and the emerging artist award read his take ont he conference and his success here ... and not to be left out I won second prize in the People's Choice category!! Yippee for 'Boy and World '.

SO A BIG SMACKEROONEY TO ALL THOSE WHO VOTED FOR ME.

Right now my drawing board is overflowing with projects so I had better get my *** in gear.

I'll leave you with a few photos from the weekend and hope to meet you at a conference soon!

 Back in the studio today.

With a great group of illustrators.

27. Catherine Austen wins Canadian Library Association Young Adult Book Award

We’re thrilled to announce that Catherine Austen has won the Canadian Library Association(CLA) Young Adult Book Award for 2012 for All Good Children

The Young Adult Book Award recognizes an author of an “outstanding Canadian English-language work of fiction (novel or collection of short stories) that appeals to young adults between the ages of 13 and 18.” Previous winners include Kenneth Oppel, Lesley Livingston, Allan Stratton, Martha Brooks, William Bell, Shyam Selvadurai, Miriam Toews, and Polly Horvath.

Here’s what the CLA had to say:

“In the near future of All Good Children, corporate towns proliferate and try to control the lives of everyone who lives in them. In Middleville, a school vaccination program has been instituted that turns girls and boys into compliant and obedient good children. Catherine Austen takes us on a roller-coaster ride of humour and suspense as, through the eyes of teen artist and prankster Maxwell Conner, we experience the resistance of his family and a close friend to the “zombification” program. Austen’s novel explores the nature and value of creativity, individuality, and non-conformity with memorable characters and a gripping plot.” Read the full press release.

Congratulations also go out to this year’s honour books and authors: Karma, by Cathy Ostlere (Penguin Canada) and This Dark Endeavour, by Kenneth Oppel (HarperCollins). A complete list of the 2011 finalists, as well as information on past winners, is available on the CLA web site.

Learn more about All Good Children (and order your print or ebook copy!) on the Orca Book Publishers website.

28. Popular!

It’s settled! I am super popular.  The proof is that I was interviewed for a wonderful writer’s blog called Imagine! Create! Write!  The whole interview is ALL ABOUT ME.  I mean, Mom is mentioned here and there, but mostly it’s me, me, ME.  Yay me!

Look how happy I am!

You can read the interview and see pictures of me here —> Blog-erview

Or here —> Interview about me!

Or over in the Blogroll on the right.

I’ll be practicing my signature in case I need to sign autographs.

30. Jeanne Balsam Kudo’s and Publishing Industry Changes

Since 2006, the artwork of SCBWI member and writer/illustrator Jeanne Balsam has graced the pages of Just Frenchies magazine, a quarterly publication devoted to the French Bulldog. Towards the end of last year, the publisher and editor of the magazine submitted Jeanne’s artwork to the DWAA, (Dog Writers Association of America), for consideration of an award.

Much to Jeanne’s delight, (and surprise, as she didn’t know she’d been submitted), she was announced as one of 5 finalists for Excellence in Illustration or Painting, competing against artists featured in Dog Fancy and the AKC Gazette. This little Frenchie with her flower hat was the image submitted on her behalf by Just Frenchies. Although she did not win her category, Jeanne was honored in being named a finalist by this prestigious national organization of writers and artists whose only subject is dogs.

Jeanne thought others may also enjoy the pup with flowered hat and created the image into blank notecards available for purchase on her web site, www.jeannebalsam.com. ( http://jeannebalsam.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=186&catid=35).

Below are two other recent illustrations Jeanne did for Just Frenchies, one for a Frenchies tracking article and another for an article on French Bulldog collectibles, where a puppy is featured with a Steiff pull toy.

Congratulations Jeanne!  We love your bulldogs.  Glad to see you being rewarded for your talent.

Jeanne suggests that children’s book illustrators may also find opportunities to have their art published by contacting publications that focus on areas of special interest and/or expertise of the artist, as she did.

In the Publishing Industry:

Publisher of the Golden Books Young Readers Group Kate Klimo is stepping down as of March 31, Random House Children’s president and publisher Chip Gibson announced internally on Friday. Gibson notes, “she is certainly a towering figure in the world of publishing, and over the course of her 40-year career, Kate has changed the face of children’s books.”

Editor-in-chief of Random House Books for Young Readers Mallory Loehr will add to her responsibilities as publishing director of the Golden group on March 31, reporting to Gibson. She will manage both the editorial and art departments for both groups.

Golden Books editor-in-chief Chris Angelilli will be promoted to editor-in-chief, executive director, licensed publishing. As part of his new duties he will also oversee Random House Children’s new partnership with Nickelodeon, where it will be the television company’s primary book publisher as of spring 2013.

At Bloomsbury Children’s and Walker Children’s, Katy Hershberger has been promoted to director of publicity.

Writers House founder and chairman Al Zuckerman is stepping down from his leadership position. President Amy Berkower will take over as chairman and Simon Lipskar will serve as president of the agency, which employs 43 people. Zuc

31. Toastworthy Teens; Sam Dutt

 Sam Dutt, Congressional Awardee

California teenager Bhaskar “Sam” Dutt was recently presented with the Congressional Award’s Bronze Medal, and yes, that is as impressive as it sounds; the medal is the United States Congress’ award for young Americans (aged 14 to 23) who combine their desire to help their communities with their eagerness to take on new challenges.

14-year-old Sam has logged close to 200 hours at Father Joe’s Village, Rady Children’s Hospital, Feeding America of San Diego, the YMCA, and Saikat (a non-profit organization that promotes Bangali culture in San Diego), as well as trail-building with his Boy Scout Troup. Not one to rest on his laurels, Sam has also earned his second-degree black belt, plays guitar in a local band, and is now close to achieving the next level of Congressional Awards – the Silver Medal – and plans to go for the Gold.

You, too, can achieve these honors; see how at:
http://congressionalaward.org/index.php

Do you know a toast-worthy teen you’d like to see featured here at BWATE?

32. Lucky Seven – Lucky Me!

Cheryl, one of my blog friends, and one of Mom’s 12×12 friends from the blog Book Nook, has tagged us for the Lucky 7 Meme Award. It’s an award for writers, like Mom (and me).

A meme moves around the Internet and carries people along with it while it grows and changes – kind of like I want my blog to do.  But it sounds a lot like MEAN, which I don’t like, so I will call it the Lucky 7 Award, and that’s it!  I like Lucky better than Mean.

These are the rules to the Lucky 7:

1. Go to page 77 of your current manuscript.  (Mom’s stories are all little, like me, so she’s going to page 1.)

2. Go to line 7.

3. Copy down the next 7 lines/sentences, and post them as they’re written. No cheating.

4. Tag 7 other authors to do the same.

Here are 7 sentences from Mom’s story called New Big Sister.  It’s about a little girl who gets a Big Sister from Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

“Would you like to take a walk?” Val asked.

I held onto Mom.  “Go ahead, Honey.  Val is your Big Sister, now.”

“What if I get lost?”

“Val will show you the way.  That’s what Big Sisters do,” Mom said.

I hope this meme *shiver* makes this story lucky!!

Seven authors that deserve this Lucky Award are:

A Pen in Neverland

No Water River

On the Write Track

Artist or Author

The Write Routine

 Dear Bliary

Mira Reisberg

Lucky us!

35. Thank You!

A big thank you cuddle to Sheri at http://sherilynmcook.blogspot.com/ for our SECOND Leibster Blog Award.

Since it’s our second time, we’ll send the award to 2 more blogs and tell 2 more facts about me.

1. I eat goose poop every chance I get.  It’s delicious! (photo not available) (You’re Welcome!)

2. Whenever I ride in an elevator, I lie down on my belly.  Can’t be too careful. Elevators are weird.

Two blogs that Mom and I like are:

For Writers…

http://www.jenniferrumberger.com

For Dog Lovers…

http://thewienertakesitall.wordpress.com/

One more thing about me.  My nose is NOT really this big.  Seriously!  It’s tiny and petite, but does not photograph well….

37. Award – Part Two

As a recipient of the Kreativ Blogger Award, I need to share 10 things you may not know about me. This is my dream come true because I LOVE to talk about myself!  Here goes….

1. Long ago, when I lived in a shelter for homeless animals, my name was Ka-Ka.

2. Mom found me at a rescue/adoption event. I was older and smaller than she thought she wanted, but she immediately loved me too much to leave me there.

3. Mom said Ka-Ka was a disgusting name, so she changed my name to Cupcake because I am so sweet and not disgusting at all.

4. Before Mom found me, I had 3 puppies. They were also sweet, and they were adopted when they were very little.

5. I wasn’t adopted till I was 3 years old. I weigh 21 pounds.

6. I studied very hard at obedience school and passed a test to become a certified therapy dog. I visit the Veterans’ Home to make people smile and the public library to listen to kids read stories.

7. I love to eat, but I hate to chew, so Mom soaks my food in warm water to make it soft for me.

8. Once I ate one of Mom’s pills and she had to make it come out of my tummy – the hard way. Yuck.

9. I am afraid of balloons, soccer players, empty water cooler bottles, yellow caution tape, elevators, the mailman, automatic doors, and sometimes my water bowl.

10. Even though Mom brushes my teeth every day with vanilla toothpaste, my breath smells like sauerkraut. I never ate sauerkraut, but I think it is probably delicious.

38. AWARD!

What a wonderful surprise Mom and I received today! Our loyal friends at Bassa’s Blog gave us an award! An award! I mean, I can’t eat it or play with it, but Mom was so excited about it that I got excited too. Yay! Award!

The Kreativ Bloggers Award has two rules. It must be passed on to 6 other bloggers. Plus, and this is my favorite part, I get to tell 10 facts about myself that nobody else knows.

Here are six blogs that Mom and I like to read:

1. We MUST start with Bassa and her tall person. Even though they already have this award, we wish to give it to them again. We love their photos and descriptions of life in The Republic of Georgia. It’s an exotic place,  VERY different from NJ, and Bassa’s exciting adventures with her tall person always make us smile.

http://bassasblog.wordpress.com

2. Another blog that we enjoy is very new, but very fun. It’s called First and Fabulous, and it’s fabulous. Mom likes it because it’s written by a teacher and talks about absolutely nothing, like somebody called Seinfeld. I like it because the teacher has two handsome dogs named Marshall and Rocky. They might be my boyfriends, but I’m not sure.

http://firstandfabulous.wordpress.com

3. Another teacher blog that mom likes is Mrs. Cassidy’s Classroom Blog. Mrs. Cassidy is a teacher in Moose Jaw, Canada and her students all have blogs of their own even though they’re only 6 years old. They blog and Skype about all the smartie things that they learn. I think Mom appreciates this because it is very difficult for me to learn smartie things.

http://classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=1337

4. House of Jeffers is a blog about fashion. Mom loves reading about fashion and seeing pictures of amazing outfits and accessories. She says, “That looks awesome.” and “Those heels are really high.” and “Stop chewing my sleeve.”

http://houseofjeffers.blogspot.com

5. Mom and I say prayers every day for Baby Annabelle. Mom reads the blog written by Annabelle’s mom so we can keep up on Annabelle’s development and her recovery from a heart transplant. Mom thinks it must be scary for such a tiny baby to need a new heart. If a new heart is like a new toy, I think it would be fun.  Mom says, “That’s not what it’s like.”

http://reflectionsbykrista.blogspot.com

6. Since Mom is a children’s writer, she always reads Laura’s Life. Laura is a 6th grader who writes book reviews. If Laura likes a book, Mom says, “Maybe I’ll take a look at it.” Then she goes to Barnes and Noble and I watch out the front window till she comes home.

http://lauramitolife.blogspot.com

Tomorrow, I will tell you ten things you probably don’t know about me.  Don’t freak out from the suspense.  If you freak out, you might end up in your crate.

39. Laurie Halse Anderson given award by NCAC for defending free speech

I LOVE this! Laurie Halse Anderson (SPEAK, WinterGirls) got an award from the NCAC, honoring her as a Defender of Free Speech. And it was handed to her by Judy Blume, no less! This is so fitting, since SPEAK is often challenged. I’m glad this happened. Laurie is one of those authors I really look up to.

40. HAIL THE CONQUERING NCTE HERO

Look who we have here, why, it’s Veronica Roth, author of mega-loved dystopian YA novel DIVERGENT

And what’s that she’s holding? Why it’s an award from the National Council of Teachers of English for “outstanding performance in writing,” awarded to her in 2005 while she was still a wee high school student.  And now it’s all come full circle– Veronica will be at NCTE’s Annual Convention this year (the 100th anniversary!), signing DIVERGENT in the HarperCollins Children’s Booth (#513) and speaking on an ALAN Workshop (Assembly on Literature for Adolescents) panel about future worlds.  Those NCTE folks sure know what they’re talking about!

Second place

Wickham Farms

by Nathan Murray, age 10
Penfield
Wickham Farms in Penfield is so close to us,
We can get there without a fuss.
I love your ice cream in a cone,
And picking a pumpkin you have grown.
In the corn maze I get lost,
Your chicken dinner is low cost.
On the jumping pillow I go up and down,
I never ever get a frown.
Animals, playground, tractor rides,
Batting cages, mini golf, then inside…
We look for the cute little mice,
And the people that work there are so nice.
Birthday parties, field trips from school,
On holidays you really rule.

45. Showcase #7

Recently, I was invited to join the group Writers of the South (USA). It is a small, but enthusiastic group of authors in every type of genre. The group is aimed at supporting and promoting authors in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Tennessee.

As we grow, we plan to take several opportunities to showcase the varied and talented people in the group. We will hit it hard over the next couple of days, hopefully gaining some new exposure and introducing you to writings you might not have found otherwise. Looking at the group, there is something for everyone, so be sure to check these posts every day.  The plan is to do this again in a few months.

Today, the spotlight shines on Wynne Huddleston!

Wynne Huddleston is a poet and music teacher with a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. Ms. Huddleston’s poetry has been published in over 40 publications.

Most recently, she announced two of her poems are being published by E*ratio.

She is the winner of several awards including the 0 Comments on Showcase #7 as of 1/1/1900

47. I won something!

Fantastic news - Yuck! won the Younger Children category in the Red House Children's Book Awards at yesterday's award ceremony in Birmingham! The overall winner was Michael Morpurgo's Shadow so we were in great company! Had a wonderful day and we were pampered by all the wonderful people from the Federation of Children's Book Groups. Thank you to all the children who voted for us and for the opportunity to meet the author of Yuck! for the first time, the lovely Angela McAllister! All the shortlisted authors and illustrators were presented with portfolios containing letters and drawings from lots of the children who had enjoyed our books - they were so lovely and it's something I will always treasure. As category winners, we also received beautiful engraved silver bookmarks - I shall put mine in my trophy cabinet alongside my only other award for illustration (so far!!) my pewter plate from Highlights High Five magazine which I won in 2009. We were even on the BBC news - definitely a first for me!

49. BEA round-up

--

Three days breathing Javitz Center air have left me feeling a little delirious. But before I self-medicate by planting flowers and working out at the gym, let me share a few BEA pics with you.

(pic from Mitali Perkins Twitter feed) Mitali Perkins, Jennifer Donnelly and I did a good job representing YA books at the Indie Choice Book Awards luncheon.

(pic from Mitali Perkins Twitter feed) After I won the award for Most Engaging Author (THANK YOU, INDIE BOOKSELLERS!), my daughter Stef worked hard at keeping me humble.

Stef and I were lucky enough to go running with Christopher McDougall, author of BORN TO RUN.

I was very happy to catch up with Sarah Dessen who has been busy criss-crossing the country to support her new book, WHAT HAPPENED TO GOODBYE.

AND I enjoyed a spectacular sushi lunch with my editor, Joy.

I was going to include lots of photos and breathless commentary about the fast-paced bidding and high-pitched drama at the ABFFE art auction. But I was so busy talking and bidding (mostly talking – EVERYONE I know in publishing was there, including Sarah Odedina from Bloomsbury, the British publisher of CHAINS and FORGE), that I didn’t take even one single pic. GAH! You can read a little bit about the auction in Josie Leavitt’s blog. Thank you to everyone who came out and made the night such a success.

(This blog entry has taken nearly three hours to compose, because WordPress is being a jerk, and because my tired brain really wants to be outside.)

BE SURE TO CHECK IN TOMORROW FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO BID ON HAVING ME CRITIQUE YOUR MANUSCRIPT!!! ALL PROCEEDS GO TO HELP THE PEOPLE OF JOPLIN, MO!!
