Shuck, Kim (Tsalagi, Sauk/Fox, Polish), Smuggling Cherokee. Greenfield Review Press, 2005; grades 7-up
Smuggling Cherokee is full of powerful insight: part autobiography, part musing, part outrageous wit, and part punch-in-the-gut startling. Kim Shuck is a visionary: she knows who she is, what she comes from, and what she’s been given to do. Her poems are honest and passionate, and, without polemic, will shatter just about every stereotype about Indians that anyone has ever espoused: The man asks me,/ “Do you speak Cherokee?”/ But it’s all I ever speak/ The end goal of several generations of a/ smuggling project./ We’ve slipped the barriers,/ Evaded border guards./ I smile,/ “Always.”
Some of Kim’s poems are tenderly, achingly beautiful: The water I used to drink spent time/ Inside a pitched basket/ It adopted the internal shape/ Took on the taste of pine/ And changed me forever. And for those who didn’t know, or didn’t care to know, the many faces of depredation:
I call the slave master
Who lost track of my ancestor
A blanket for you
In gratitude.
I call the soldier
With a tired arm
Who didn’t cut deeply enough
Into my great-great grandfather’s chest to kill clean.
I return your axehead
Oiled and sharpened
Wield it against others with equal skill.
Will the boarding school officer come up?
The one who didn’t take my Gram
Because of her crippled leg.
No use as a servant – such a shame with that face…
Finally the shopkeeper’s wife
Who traded spoiled cans of fruit
For baskets that took a year each to make.
Thank you, Faith, for not poisoning

And let no one say
That I am not

Smuggling Cherokee, as with all of Kim Shuck’s poems, will resonate with Indian middle and high school readers. Students who are not Indian may not “get” some of them the first time around, but they will, eventually, if given the space to sit with them.
Kim Shuck—a poet, teacher, fine artist and parent of at least three—teaches college courses in Native Short Literature, creates phenomenal beadwork and basketry, curates museum collections, teaches origami to young children as an introduction to geometry, grows vegetables, converses with trees, takes long walks, and meditates while doing piles of laundry. She won the Native Writers of the Americas First Book Award for Smuggling Cherokee, as well as the Diane Decorah Award for Poetry, she has a fierce and gentle heart, and I’m honored to call her “friend.”

This month the Poetry Sisters have been working on producing Etheree poems.
This form consists of ten lines; and the poems grow by add one syllable to each line. There are no rhymes. Trisha got us started early in the month by posting about the form on here Monday Poetry Stretch. I submitted my first poem there, and then later worked on a few others. अक्सर
माँ को भी याद आती है
अपनी माँ की हर बात
उसका वो
नर्म हाथो से रोटी का निवाला खिलाना
होस्टल छोडने जाते हुए वो डबडबाई आखों से निहारना
उसका पल्लू पकड़कर आगे पीछे घूमना
उसके प्यार की आचँ से तपता बुखार उतर जाना
कम अंक लाने पर उसका रुठना पर जल्दी ही मान जाना
अक्सर
माँ को भी याद आती है
अपनी माँ की हर बात
पर माँ तो माँ है
इसलिए बस चंद पल खुद ही सिसक लेती है
और फिर भुला देती है खुद को
पाकर अपने बच्चो को प्यार भरी
छावँ मे,दुलार मे ,मनुहार में
पर अक्सर
माँ को भी याद आती है
अपनी माँ की हर बात
असल मॆं, हम हरदम अपनी मां की बात करते हैं उन्हें याद करते हैं पर हमारी मां को भी अपनी मां की याद आती है … है ना … बस यही सोच कर कविता बन गई … कैसी लगी आपको जरुर बताईगा !!!

कुछ देर
मैं हँसी
तो फूल मुस्कुरा उठे
मैनें छेड़ा तराना
तो इन्द्रधनुष और खिल उठा……
जिसकी कामना की……..
वही मिलती चलती गर्इ….
मन सुख समुंद्र में
लगा गोते लगाने
चारों और खुशनुमा माहौल
लगा मन में अजब स्फूर्ति भरने
ये धरती……… ये आकाश
ये चाँद …………ये तारे
सभी लगे मस्ती में झूमने
तभी…………….
टूटी तंद्रा मेरी
बीमार काया
टूटा पलंग, सूखी रसोर्इ
यहाँ गरीबी का हो रहा था ताँड़व
अचानक
फीकी हँसी मेरे अधरों पर खिल उठी
चलो………….
कोर्इ नही कल्पना तो है मेरे साथ
जब चाहे उसे नया रूप देकर
खुद को बहला तो सकती हूँ
कुछ देर जी तो सकती हूँ………….

कई बार जिंदगी में ऐसे पल आते हैं जब मन एक दम अकेला और मायूस सा हो जाता है… अब ये अपनी ऊपर हैं कि दुखी मन को लेकर दुखी हो जाओ या फिर मनोबल बनाए रखने के लिए मन को खुश रखो … मैने मन को ही खुश रखा क्योकि उसने मेरा ही भला होना था … ज्यादा तनाव रखती तो तबियत खराब हो जाती और डाक्टरों के चक्कर , अस्पताल के चक्कर लगाने कौन से आसान है भई … इसलिए सकारात्मक सोच लिए जिओ और देखना समस्या का हल भी निकल जाएगा बस एक ही कंडीशन है कि आप अपने कार्यों के प्रति ईमानदार रहना होगा …

ये मेरी पहली कविता थी. मन में भाव तो हमेशा ही उमड घुमड कर आते रहते थे पर ये पहली बार थी जब इन विचारों की दिशा मिली …
कब छटेंगे बादल
दल में बादल, गहरे बादल, काले बादल
उथले बादल, क्षितिज में विचरते बादल,
पर्वतों के ऊपर छत्र की तरह छाए बादल।
बादल………. दलदल बादल,
आखिर………कब छटेंगे ये बादल
क्या बरसात में ही पैर बढ़ा दूँ मैं……….?
की रूक जाऊँ, ठहर जाऊँ मैं………?
ठहर जाऊँ………..??
जिंदगी वैसे ही है ठहरी,ठहरी
कौंधती बिजली………गर्जते बादल,
हलचल मचा रहे मन में,
अरे! बुलबुले बने, टूटे……..,
देख मन में आस जगी…..
काले घन में भी है बिजली चमकी……..
फिर…….. हे मन, तू क्यों है व्यथित……….
क्यों……… आंखों के आगे काले बादल बैठाए हैं…….
ज़रा अश्रू तो पोंछ, पलक साफ कर…….
देखा………..!! छट गए न बादल………
न बादल, न दल में बादल
पैर बढ़ा, चल मंजिल की ओर……….
ठहरी जिंदगी को दे नया बल……..
दल में बादल…….??
भुज बल में भी तो है आंधी…….
देखा…… छट गए ना बादल……….!!
नकारात्मक सोच से शुरु ये कविता आखिरकार सकारात्मकता पर खत्म हुई … आपको कैसी लगी … जरुर बताईएगा

कई बार…. हमारे देश मॆं जिस तरह से भूण हत्याएं हो रही हैं मन विचलित हो जाता है और उसी विचलित मन से बन जाती हैं ऐसी कविता कि हद हो गई … बस बहुत हो गया …
अब बहुत हो गया
बस
अब बहुत हो गया
हद हो गर्इ
टी.वी. हो या समाचार पत्र
कविता प्रतियोगिता हो या राज्यस्तरीय विवाद
पर लगा नहीं पा रहे
भ्रूण हत्या पर लगाम
कह कह कर थक गए हम
पर हम अडि़ग हैं कि
कन्या नही…… कन्या नही
बस चाहिए पुत्र रत्न ही
कोर्इ बात नही
ज्यादा दूर नही है, देख लेंगेें
आज से बीस साल बाद
जब…..
लड़की नही मिलेगी कोर्इ
आपके कुल दीपक से ब्याहने को
आपका वंश चलाने को
ना होगी तब नवरात्रि में कंजको की पूजा
ना होगी पति की लम्बी उम्र के लिए उपवास पूजा
ना छम छम पायल से किसी का घर आँगन चहकेगा
नाना-नानी बनने का शौक अधूरा ही रह जाऐगा
ना रहेगा प्रेम, ना होगी करूणा
क्योंकि यह तो है नारी का गहना
बेबस मन कन्यादान से वंचित रह जाऐगा
हरा भरा घर मकान बन कर ही रह जाऐगा
मनु, इंदिदरा, कल्पना का नाम पन्नों में ही रह जाऐगा
बस……….
कुछ ही सालों की है बात
हैरान, परेशान हताश खुद ही कह उठेंगें आप
कन्या थी अनमोल रत्न
पर तब तक शायद बहुत देर हो चुकी होगी
हमें इन्तज़ार करना होगा
शायद फिर से बीस सालों का
पर तब तक सब कुछ बदल चुका होगा
खामोशी,उदासी, मायूसी का फैल चुका होगा आतंक
तो फिर………..
क्यों हो रही हैं ये भ्रूण हत्याएँ
ठान लो
बस बहुत हो गया
जानते हो
हम भारतवासी……… एक जुट हो क्या है कर सकते
मुसीबत पडने पर दे सकतें हैं जान
चीर सकतें हैं धरती की छाती
उधेड़ सकतें हैं पहाड़ों का सीना
जब ला सकतें हैं हरियाली बंजर धरा पर
फिर क्यों है रोक कलियों के प्रस्फुटन पर
चलिए लें संकल्प
आज, अभी, यहीं
भ्रूण हत्या पर लगाए
कस कर लगाम सभी
मत ड़गमगाने दें भारत का आधार
नर और नारी से ही है हमारा घर संसार
उठो, जागो, चलो
बनाए संसार में भारत की अलग पहचान
ताकि फिर से ना पड़े कहना कि…….

मन की बात
एक तरफ
तपता सूरज
जलती धरा
मन बेचारा
अकेला पड़ा………बेसहारा
दूसरी ओर
नन्हा पौधा
गर्मी की मार
सह ना सका
और
पनपते ही कुम्हला गया
काश
मिल जाता
किसी का सहारा
या फिर शीतल धरा
और पनप जाता
पर……
वो चुपचाप…….खामोश सा
पड़ा रहा
मन भी ऐसा ही है
खामोश, चुपचाप
एकदम अलग-अलग
काश……..
मन कुछ कर सकता
झुलसते पौधे को देखकर
सहला सकता
तभी अचानक
रूक गए मेरे पानी पीते हाथ
उड़ेल दिया पानी
उस नन्हें पर
तब तक
सूरज की लौ
पड़ चुकी थी मद्धम
ठण्ड़े झोंको से
आने लगी उसमे जान
इधर………..
मुस्कुरा उठा मेरा मन
उधर….
जलती धरा भी
शांत हो गर्इ
अब……..
नन्हें को मिल गया था एक सहारा
शीतल धरा का
एक तरफ……….
प्रकृति खिलखिलार्इ
दूसरी तरफ……….
मन मुस्कुराया
