Miyazaki wants to take a stab at creating this story because he felt “very dissatisfied with the way that era was depicted in fiction and film, so I wanted to draw something that would reflect the way I thought that era should look.” What do you think?

Gaiman confesses that the “Hansel and Gretel” fairy tale really frightens him, but he does believe that children must be exposed to dark stories. Gaiman thinks that “if you are protected from dark things then you have no protection of, knowledge of, or understanding of dark things when they show up. I think it is really important to show dark things to kids—and in the showing, to also show that dark things can be beaten, that you have power.”

37. DMC No. 1 Arrives: Biff! Boff! Boom!

Felipe Smith/Darryl Makes Comics

Felipe Smith/Darryl Makes Comics

Hip-hop pioneer Darryl McDaniels, a founding member of Run-DMC, who turned to comics for courage as a kid facing bullies in Hollis, Queens, has created a new superhero who takes the stage in DMC No. 1, the first in a new series of comic books from Darryl Makes Comics.

McDaniels told George Gene Gustines of the New York Times:

“I was a kid who had my lunch money taken away. …To get to my house was terror. Spider-Man took me to a place where everything was great. …Comic books were educational — they were empowering but also inspiring.

“I always wanted to do something with integrity. I didn’t want to be another rapper messing up another genre just because he has a hit record.”

Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, editor in chief of Darryl Makes Comics, noted the attention from a diverse fan base the comic book DMC was garnering at conventions like the recent Comic Con in Manhattan. “It’s Asian, it’s white, it’s Latino, it’s black, it’s 13-year-olds, it’s 63-year-olds.”

Bringing his vision DMC to the page, McDaniels worked with a team including Miranda-Rodriquez, Atlantic Records executive Riggs Morales, and story consultants Damion Scott and Ron Wimberly. The artists who bring DMC to life are Sal Buscema, Carlos Rodriquez aka Mare 139, Chase Conley, Jeff Stokely, Felipe Smith, Mark and Mike Davis aka The Madtwiinz, Shawn Crytal, Chris Sotomayor, and Deron Bennett.

40. The Morgan Library is Hosting An Exhibit on Richard McGuire’s ‘Here’

321387_10151430125866183_744849131_nThe Morgan Library & Museum is hosting an exhibit called “From Here to Here: Richard McGuire Makes a Book.” This art show was organized to celebrate the publication of the graphic novel, Here.

This full-color book, due out on December 9th, is based on McGuire’s original black-and-white comic. The closing date has been scheduled for November 9th.

Here’s more about the exhibit: “Though the viewpoint in Here remains fixed on one corner of a living room, time in the story is boundless and elastic. Populating the space with multiple frames of action, dating from the ancient past to the distant future, McGuire conjures narratives, dialogues, and streams of association that unite moments divided by years and centuries. The exhibition combines original drawings for the strip and the novel with source photographs, books that influenced the form and content of McGuire’s invention, and collages and sketchbooks that afford glimpses into his creative process.”

Anthropologist and writer Dana Walrath gave a TED Talk on “Comics, Medicine, and Memory.” She shared memories of caring for her mother who suffered through dementia. Her mother derived great enjoyment from reading comics throughout this difficult time period; the “visual-verbal combination makes up for some of the memory loss and lets content stay sophisticated.”

Walrath’s observations ultimately lead her to conclude that comics are highly accessible to those who suffer from dementia. She firmly believes that “by meeting through story, we make peace and we move on. Even if we’re sick or hurt or dying.” That is how she came to pen Aliceheimer’s. 43. Bryan Lee O’Malley: ‘Every new book idea, I’m just going to tackle a problem and fix it.’

Bryan Lee O'MalleyOver the weekend, Bryan Lee O’Malley appeared at New York Comic Con panel for a conversation with Cory Doctorow about his latest book, Seconds.

Following the great success he achieved with the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, he wanted to “do something super arty and weird.” For Seconds, O’Malley set out to write “a very external character…characters who just barge through life.” The star protagonist of this story, Katie, was partially inspired “by an obnoxious rock star.”

Regardless of the project, two parts of O’Malley’s creative process remain constant. First, he has to create the perfect mix tape because he will likely listen to it “thousands of times.” Second, he takes this approach: “every new book idea, I’m just going to tackle a problem and fix it.” What’s the initial step you take when you start a new project?

Ryall gave this statement in the press release: “I know that an American writing Dirk comics is going to get a certain segment of British Adams fans a bit brassed off but, much like in the case of the oft-referenced Schrödinger’s cat in the Dirk novels, we can all agree that until the world opens these comics, they are both good and not good, right? And certainly Adams’ writing transcends all borders and has rightfully earned him a worldwide following. I can’t wait to bring Dirk into the world of comics.”
