I've been working on a project this week that has me drawing babies. Which really makes me, as a parent, think about how fast time flies. Babies grow up so ridiculously fast. If fact, my baby is starting middle school next fall. (sniff sniff)

So... did you hear about the TIME the preacher went to visit a man in the hospital? At one point the man scribbled a note and handed it to the preacher, who folded it up and stuck it in his pocket without reading it. Later at the man's funeral, the preacher thought it would be dramatic to read the man's last words he had written on the note. He pulled the note out of his pocket and read... "GET OFF MY OXYGEN HOSE!"

This is a detail from a picture I did some years back when Dan and I did a lot more climbing-- he'd requested that I do a cliff. Of course, I felt compelled to add a little more story to the picture than just the story in the layers of stone-- though that's a pretty huge story all by itself.
When I saw that today's prompt was "time", I got to thinking about this image... and then about last week's "flaw" prompt as well.
Time batters us, like ocean batters the shore. The weakest structures are the first to rejoin the sea, while the strongest remain, twisting interesting shapes into our faces.
Are we shaped more by our weaknesses, or our strengths?

FLAWED
is this week's theme over at Illustration Friday (yeah it is indeed Thursday, I am just squeaking in under the wire here!) This is a painting I did last spring, and it was the card image for my one person show at Sherry French Gallery in June. I remember the canvas was still wet when I photographed it. Down to the wire is my usual state I am afraid!
While painting the set up I became entranced with the big tear in the broad hydrangea leaf. Which I guess qualifies it for this week's theme of flawed.

I'm guessing this guy may have some character flaws.
I went to see a band called Five O'clock Shadow this weekend. I guess the name of the band was my inspiration for this unshaven character. BTW I think the band is great. They are an all-vocal band but until I saw them live I didn't believe they didn't use instruments - it's really amazing. And I'm not just saying this because they sang happy birthday to me - thanks guys that was fun but really embarrassing!
Note: If you are interested in creating a halftone dotty pattern in Photoshop like I did in the background above, view the accompanying entry that explains the process.

"Sometimes our flaws are what make us charming."
I had hoped to do something grand for my 300th post, but as busy as I am lately, I just have not even had time to blog nor visit the blogs I like. I miss everyone! I've been super busy with the spreads for the book "Little Black Ant at Park Street". Unlike my last project, I cannot show the illustrations for this current book until the book is published and released in early summer. And honestly I have little creative energy left after painting all day and/or night.
I did get a chance to draw a little in my Moleskine last weekend, and I posted my latest drawing here, along with a little demo on how I draw near-perfect ellipses.
To everyone who has visited my blog over the last couple of years....THANK YOU! Please continue to visit...your comments encourage me and sometimes they even make me laugh.

I hope the boy in the tree can escape the boys on the ground if they climb after him! This was one of several drawings I did last year for a book. I’m sorry to be so long between postings, but I’ve been crazy-busy with work, and almost everything else has gone by the way side. [...]

I was lucky to have just finished this piece yesterday, seeing that it is perfect for Illustration Friday. It's part of a series of Jungle Friends that I've posted about before here. I'm excited to be getting back to business after a great week with visiting relatives. I taught Art Vista to the 6th grade today. Later I'll help break down the kids' art show, and supervise my kids' homework, so I guess it's really tomorrow that I get back to business.

SocMo bought himself some new threads so he can do some social CLIMBING.
For the last two years the New Yorker magazine has had a contest where people can create their version of Eustace Tilley, the iconic dandy of the magazine. I have never participated in the contest, but have wanted to do a SocMo version. This week's IF word gave me the perfect opportunity to try this.
For many years I have gone to a newstand and flipped throug the New Yorker to read the cartoons. They are very topical and usually reflect our culture. If you are curious... you can see the original Eustace Tilley and view all the entries in the contest by CLICKING HERE.

I have always loved collage from the 'old school cut and paste' style to the 'scan it all in and mess around for hours in photoshop' variety. I have recently fallen in love with it again after stumbling upon a crate of photographs, filled with all sorts of images from our travels. My husband is the photographer in the family and this series is dedicated to him, for always inspiring me. I have posted this first one for Illustration Friday and the rest of the series will be on my blog.

I created the above image last night but as I was drawing it, I kept thinking about what would happen next in the story. Who was that person next to the house? Why is the boy climbing the cliff? The more I thought about it, the more I couldn't resist adding a second panel to the story...

It's been a crazy month, and I have really missed having time to do illo friday. This one was kind of cathartic for me-- one of those times when I connected with the word and an image popped into my head immediately.
Maybe it's the economic crisis, maybe war, maybe something closer to home-- but I bet you've been where this guy is. The walls hold a lot of shadows, some nights...

My first Illustration Friday for 2009
Here’s how Illustration Friday works: Every Friday, IF members receive a word prompt to illustrate. The above brush-pen image is my interpretation of the word “Contained.”
I sketched this last Friday using a ball-point pen. Today, I re-drew it in brush-pen, scanned it and added shading in Photoshop.

I think that is cool too. Any work of yours will be a joy to have!
What a lovely dimensional painting! I love the blues of the night and the glow of the stars.
Have a great weekend!
oh this is gorgeous! love the aura! and the shoe is fab, not flawed!
Its amazing how you do to use your "house/home" to diferents tags!
lovely!
The blues and yellows are magical together!
Really lovely. It sets a wonderful atmosphere.
wow another very cool piece I could just sit and watch you draw!
Great work, Val :) Thanks for sharing!
OMG! I LOVE this piece. I love all your pieces... but this one is just WOW.
I think it needed a little black kitty though. I love searching you pics for the little black kitty :)
Crazy...really like how this breaks the frame...This is one I would really like to see in person because while it looks 3D at the same time it doesn't if that makes sense...did you cut away a piece of the frame? Per the usual great light effects here to make it pop...
so cool, great pick for this weeks theme, the hawk is lovely.
And you made this in 1992?Wow. Absolutely wonderful.
marvellous...big ben perhaps??
Cool, love the night colors and the perspective!!!
The colors and perspective scream "Time," wonderful imagery!
Clever title for this piece! And how did I know ( or feel) you'd be playing this song?
:)
I think there's a story in every lit window of this piece. Love everything about it.
clap clap clap
fantastic as always
so closer to floyd's song
:-)
Dreamy! I'm such a fan of your buildings and houses. This is really awesome. And it was cool to imagine the hawk while listening to Pink Floyd, too.
this is so beautiful! i like the hawk.
Really beautiful! I just feel like back to night time each day to celebrate the essence of magical light that speaks so well here.
What a legend!
Yes, I bet it's like losing a part of you when you sell a piece. I think I would want to know who bought my art (if I were an artist) just for that special connection.
Oooh... I like the way it breaks the boundary with the roof top...
Imagine having a painting by Valgal on your wall ...well... you already know how that feels...hee hee!!
Hi Val,
Time has no control over our art, her continued to live long, very long time ...
Very good week.
Hauntingly beautiful!
I want to live in a shoe house too!.. I am waiting for seeing yours in color.. and yes, you are right, a piece that is just yours goes to someone else hands.. but they are still yours.. =)
ooh, i love clock towers! love the mood of this one!
Hi Val,
Love this illo. Beautiful as always. Thanks so much for stopping by. I'm hoping to jump back on the Illustration Friday bandwagon again if time permits.
