Monsters occupy a special place in children's literature, but for as pervasive as they seem to be - they are being de-clawed in the worst way. Monsters are often a metaphor of the unknown, often feared and misunderstood. They are the other. They also are aspects of a child reader's own personality and as of yet relatively unexamined psyche.
