1. Caldecott A-Z Review: Kitten's First Full Moon - 2005, Kevin Henkes

2005 - Kitten's First Full Moon, Kevin Henkes

There is something about those end paper dots that makes children want to connect them into shapes. I have not seen a library version yet without these reader additions.

Summary: When Kitten mistakes the full moon for a bowl of milk, she ends up tired, wet, and hungry trying to reach it." In the end, the kitten gets a bowl of milk–just for her–Great arc and pacing.

The illustrations are delightful. Seen as reminiscent of early Sendak. Typography really well matched to the illustrations—facing white page with text balances out full-page drawings. Black and white, ink wash, heavy lines, great use of white space—Great pacing, with contradiction of text and illustration.
Greenwillow Books, Harper Collins.
