So...who is killing the Solar Bill? The Democrats. Really.
I just can't stand either political party...they are both just turning tricks at the street corner for lobbyists, unions, etc. anyone with deep pockets and agendas...What gets me is that both parties pretend to be holier that thou and then they both point the finger when nothing gets done.
On another political note....Here's who I want for president: Arnold Schwarzeneger- really. But he can't run because he wasn't born here...So instead we have the war hero maverick we aren't allowed to question (because he's a war hero..shhh don't be so unpatriotic! Do you know what her went through as a prisoner of war??)and his aptly self named "pitbull with lipstick" (she has about the depth and intellegence of one would expect from the mayor of the meth capital of Alaska- who has been taking in pork left and right to the tune of several thousand dollars per citizen- that's our money, folks)...and then you have Barak Obama whose ideas about taxation make me kringe. How can anyone save and invest with what he's proposing?? And his running mate the dude who is totally in bed with the nasty credit card companies and who people in his native state can't stand. Let's get that stupid little law about having to be born here changed.

Speaking of pirates… today we celebrate Poetry Friday with a sea song. Or the hint of one, at least.
“And silver the coins and silver the moon, / Silver the waves on the top of the sea…” starts Jane Yolen’s The Ballad of the Pirate Queens, an adventure that sings the history of Anne Bonney and Mary Reade, the only two women of the twelve pirates aboard the legendary Vanity ship, in 1720.
Jane Yolen never disappoints. Neither does Poetry Friday, today at Miss Rumphius Effect. This installment unveils priceless treasures, such as Sylvia Vardell’s reviews of new poems by Gary Soto and Pat Mora, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. So hurry up and check them out, mi hearties. They are worth their weight in gold!

So, since I was starting to feel like I didn't have enough going on in my life (*cough*), I volunteered to monitor a Life Drawing series back at the art studio I used to teach at before my-life-of-relentless-deadlines.
One of the reasons I love Country Village is that there are all kinds of critters underfoot -
But back to Life Drawing - in trying to put these sessions together with enough attendance to pay for the models I stumbled across the most wonderful 'event' site: Meetup. This site and service was new to me, and boy is it comprehensive! and a terrific meeting tool. I'm looking forward to expanding its use in the future.
And I must say that the figure drawing session went well. We had a terrific turn-out and a great model. It's been some time since I've done life drawing and am working out the kinks in the rusty anatomical-observational skills, but it felt really good to be doing it again. Doing something that is just art, for art's sake rather than for a client or deadline. And the whole rationale behind being 'in charge' was to make certain the I would have no excuse not to attend.
This should work!

"A woman can never be too packed with shopping bags!". Laugh. Well that's kind of absurd, and not very deep. But hey it fit's with today's Illustration Friday theme "packed"! For all fashionistas out there, the stylish fashion blog www.almostpacked.com also inspired me to post this inspiration card for this week's Illustration Friday theme.
I created this illustration for German magazine LISA, to an article that was wondering if shopping is in a woman's genes. How superficial. Of ourse it's not. Right?
Laugh. Have a great, happy weekend everyone!

This is so great! If I lived in a ground-level house, I’d do something like this in my windows for sure. Mark Gervais uses Flash and After Effects to create these amazing Halloween animations that he projects onto his windows on Halloween. He’s selling DVDs, too, so you can spook up your own windows or party walls.
Senate is hotlining the Orphan Works Bill!

We need you to contact your Senator immediately to oppose S. 2913. Word from Senator Leahy's office today that Senators Leahy and Hatch are pushing the Senate to hotline S.2913, "The Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008" today or this weekend! There is a possibility that Leahy's Orphan Works bill may be tacked onto another economic bill related to current events and quickly passed first by the Senate and then by the House.
Senator Leahy has just released an amendment to his bill, but the amendment still does not include the Notice of Use (NOU) nor an archive of NOU filings. Without the Notice of Use provision, the Graphic Artists Guild continues to oppose the Senate Orphan Works bill, S. 2913

When I started watching this animated PSA against global warming, I was taken with the realistic and ever-so-slightly anthropomorphic animals whose lives are affected by climate change, but the short soon takes a rather shockingly disturbing turn.

If you’re looking for some bone soup, scurvy prevention supplies and leeches for various ailments, look no further than 826 Valencia, an independent pirate supply store located in San Francisco’s lively Mission district. But don’t be misled by the store’s appearance or its workers’ pirattitude: far from inspiring mortal fear, their jolly roger promises learning and fun.
Founded by writer Dave Eggers (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genious), since 2002 the 826 Valencia ship has been sailing on the forefront of literacy efforts as a reading and writing lab/tutoring program “in disguise.” The lure of its brand of piracy is undeniable. Students ages 6-18 get free tutoring from some of the most creative and qualified people in town, and anyone visiting the “store” can barter for a cup of lard, be mopped (!), buy pirate trinkets (a clam opener, anyone? how about a magenta eye patch?) and discover a world of treasures hidden in countless drawers that beg to be opened. Behind all the whimsy, though (literally, at the back of the store, behind a curtain), there are young minds at work, learning new writing skills, getting ready for SAT exams, experiencing mind growth through creativity and fun.
826 Valencia is just around the corner from my house—lucky me!—and I often visit with my daughter, who, in spite of being too young for the workshops, is clearly lured. Upon entering the store for the first time a couple of years ago, she exclaimed, half scared, half thrilled, “I didn’t know there were pirates in our neighborhood!” The neighborhood hasn’t been the same since.
If you missed International “Talk Like a Pirate” Day, a fun-filled occasion dedicated to pirates and their vernacular and celebrated worldwide on Sep 19, check out 826 Valencia for your fix: there are always fun things happening. Today, for instance, there’s a locksmith workshop that will teach kids “how to not pick locks, how to make keys, find keys, lose keys, and more.” Land lubbers of all ages will feel compelled to join in on some of these piracy ventures.
For accounts of actual events that occur in the shop, check the store log. And here and here for a couple of good reads for little ones contemplating buccannering as a career.

Here's another image for Illustration Friday. It's an old exhibition piece from a few years ago. Now what inspired me to draw this? I can't remember, it was from a doodle on a train. Skinny runt though I am, perhaps I was feeling spiritually bloated.

Someone will be looking up your nose very closely at some point. Count on that and apply Q-tip accordingly. Gracias!
I just cleaned some guy's nose with a digital Q-tip. For a ridiculously huge fee, I'll clean your digital nose, too.

An illustration that I did for the invitation to his bd, and the 3D sculpture made out of fondant for the bd cake. Cake girl is an artist!
I'll post a nicer pick of the sculpture later today. I kept it!

Good Afternoon:
Well, here it is, late September....The heat is almost unbearable here in the Southern California desert. With the furnace-like dryness all about, the invitation to stay indoors is tempting and welcomed.
I've accomplished exactly nothing in my brick and mortar life. In my electronic life, however, I managed to list a brand new print. The original piece is close to a year old, but I've just now decided to offer it in print form....
Fashionable Fiona
Fashionable Fiona can be purchased at My Etsy Art Shop
It isn't necessarily my favorite piece, but I do so love creating collage pieces with "Fiona". My intentions are to start work on a new Fiona piece this weekend. I think I shall plan for a Halloween Fiona!
I've also listed a few new vintage photos over the last few days. Here are two of my favorites:
Our Life In Dreamland
Blushing Bride
They can be found at My Etsy Vintage Photo Shop.
As always, thanks ever so much for stopping by. It is truly appreciated
Until the next time:

So, continuing with the process..
After I received the pop-up mock ups I had to start working on the final color art for all the spreads. For a pop-up spread what I had to do is first render the flat background alone and then I had to individually illustrate each pop-piece separately. For example the head was one piece, the body and tail another etc... That was a little different I confess, I'm used to illustrating a complete character not in pieces but after seeing the book all together it really works and the pop-ups look wonderful!
I work with watercolors and this part of the process is my favorite one. I just put on some music and let my mind go.. no thinking just enjoying the moment and feeling the paint. I really love that!
When they are done, the spreads are scanned and I add details in photoshop. I sent those for final approval and I got a big and happy OK! And then months passed by.. until finally the package arrived I opened it up and there it was I Love You All Year Round, a pop-up book, written by Shella Shubuck, illustrated by me.. and let me just say there is no better feeling really! :o)
