dilrajmann:

This girl was near Ridley Road market. Trying to get away from the fish.

It’s hard to tell much from the site of Dilraj Mann — for instance, is that his/her name? an expression? a particular kind of Mann? — but it’s also hard not to get sucked into it. His/her lines and forms are just beautiful. Apparently most of these are done during breaks from work? Now I hate him/her.

sirmitchell:

And a bit of a progress GIF.

Mike Mitchell doesn’t need much introduction — he’s best known for his pop culture -inflected illustrations, but I’m really loving him flexing his digital painting chops on this series of fat birds. One of the things that sets him apart as an artist is his ability to maintain a throughline in his work, whether it’s an 80’s video game character or a fat barn swallow. Side bonus for followers of his Tumblr are his occasional astronomical photographs, like this one

38435. Concertgoer

Here's a sketch I did of a gentleman who was sitting in front of me at a concert.

I loved the way his tendons showed up on the back of his hand, the way his fingers bent slightly backward, and the way the skin of his cheek wrinkled up as he pushed on it.

Of course he didn't hold this pose for the whole time, but he returned to it a few times through the concert.

Here are the tools I used: Yasutomo Niji WaterbrushCaran D'Ache watercolor pencilsMoleskine Watercolor Notebook

Last night I finally had a chance to watch The Sweatbox, the documentary about the production of Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove.

When Sting was asked to create the music for  the animated feature, he did so on the condition that his wife Trudie Styler document the making of the movie — one that would turn out to involve countless story problems and struggles between the creative departments and management.

The documentary screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2002, and Disney seems to have made sure it was never seen again. This work print that floats around YouTube in various places isn’t the final cut of the film (and feels a little Sting-heavy) but it gives great insight into some of the internal struggles that plagued the post-Lion King Disney.

I received a copy of the Slovenian edition of Don't Panic Annika the other day. I guess we illustrators have it easy, we know how our artwork translates into foreign editions. The authors have to hope the translator got it right.

38440. PaperTigers’ Global Voices: René Colato Laínez (USA/El Salvador)

The War in El Salvador ~ by René Colato Laínez

When I was a child in El Salvador, I went to school, recited poetry, played with my friends and won a hula-hoop contest on national television. I might say that I had a normal childhood. But then, everything was upside down. For many days the school closed because of civil revolts. The radio and the television always talked about the army, guerrillas and the revolution in the country. The mad game came to El Salvador. The country was involved in a terrible civil war.

As I child, I did not really understand what was really going on. I asked myself many times, Why? Why were they doing this to the country? Before the war, when I heard a “boom”,  I clapped and jumped up a down. It was the sound of the fireworks for Christmas. A “boom” meant that Christmas was around the corner. But during the war, when I heard the first “boom”, I ran home and hid under my bed, while more “booms” went on and on. Because those “booms” were not the sounds of happiness, they were the sounds of war.

During the war, thousands of Salvadorans left the country looking for peace and better opportunities. Many of these Salvadorans traveled to the United States. My mom was the first one in the family who left the country. After many struggles, my father and I left El Salvador in 1985.

I arrived in Los Angeles, California and I had the determination to go to school to become a teacher. Now I am a kindergarten teacher at Fernangeles Elementary School. I am also the author of many children’s books.

In December 2010, Cinco Puntos Press contacted me to participate in a book. They were putting together an anthology about children and war and were wondering if I could consider submitting an essay for the anthology. Of course I said yes! I love Cinco Puntos Press books. I use their bilingual books in my classroom all the time. Participating in this anthology was an honor for me.

The name of the book is That Mad Game; Growing Up in a Warzone: An Anthology of Essays from Around the Globe. The editor of the anthology is J. L. Powers.

Now was the hard part. What to write about? I grew up during the war and I had so many memories. My fourth grade teacher was killed during the war. That morning, the school was closed. Instead of having class, all the students went to a funeral home that was located one block away from school. I also knew friends who were recruited and found dead days later in rubbish dumps.

But I wanted to write all the way from the bottom of my heart. I wanted to write about my family and how the war divided us. But it was hard! Remembering my mom saying good-bye at the airport, visiting my father in jail, listening to the terrible news that archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero was assassinated and the final chaos at the cathedral during his funeral were all hard memories to put on paper. I must confess that I wrote my essay with tears in my eyes. Also it was a good therapy to write the essay. Yes, the war divided us but it could not destroy our love, faith and family bond.

The name of my ess

38441. a Lunch Lady comic by Dafne

I love it when kids draw my characters. I especially love it when they take my characters on new adventures! Check out Lunch Lady and the New Lunch Lady, a comic by Dafne. Not only is Dafne super talented, she's resourceful. She took a barcode off of a banana for the barcode on her library edition of this new Lunch lady adventure. Keep making those comics, Dafne!

Read her comic below!

38445. grayson perry's tapestries

Hey, did you know that Grayson Perry's tapestry exhibition is still running at London's Victoria Miro gallery?

You can catch it until 11 August! If you want to watch the television documentary about it In the Best Possible Taste, you've missed the first episode, but you can catch Episode 2 for one more day and Episode 3 for eight more days on the 4oD website.

Here's the guest book entry I left behind; I thought the show was okay...

Ha ha, no, it was brilliant. And since so many of the tapestries had mobile phones stitched into them, and lots of other people were taking photos, I felt it would be all right to release my inner tourist and go all happy snappy.

If you don't live in Britain, you might not have heard of Grayson Perry, but he's pretty much known by everyone here because of his fabulous frocks and bonnets, and his pink motorcycle with a shrine on the back for his teddy bear, Alan Measles. In his latest revealed project, he's been creating a series of six tapestries which explore the different class tastes of British people. For example, how do people in the working class decorate their houses? Decorate their skin? Why are souped-up cars so important? Here's the first tapestry, The Adoration of the Cage Fighters:

As you can tell from the tapestry's title and set-up, Grayson's drawing heavily on established religious imagery. And he's also using as a template William Hogarth's series, The Rake's Progress, but following the life of his own character, Tim Rakewell. (If you're ever in the John Soane Museum in London, be sure to look for these eight paintings, hidden in an ingenious secret cupboard.)

I love all the details of recognisable patterns and paintings and bits of furniture. Grayson has a way of drawing that looks part folk art, part indie comics (which I suppose are also folk art), and it's both very appealing and often amusingly grotesque.

Here are the magi cage fighters. Tattoos really get my British husband's back up. I get such a sense of glee pointing out interesting ones to him and admiring them, because I can see it almost kills him to talk about them as legitimate art forms, but he doesn't want to sound priggish either. Yeah, that's a class thing.

Here's the a detail of the second tapestry. It has so many talking points. That model plane reminds me of one my dad got my sister for her birthday. They went out flying it with her then-boyfriend, and after she broke up with the guy, my dad kept going on dates with him to fly that thing. My sister was so not amused by this. I think the plane's still in my parents' garage.
