Brooklyn-based animator and bona fide biker chick Lori Samsel made this cute animated piece entirely out of Japanese rice crackers. I think I’m most impressed that she managed to animate the film before eating all of the crackers. Those things are yummy!

"Alfie already has a significant list of grievances-taking baths, making his bed, eating potatoes-so when his mother wants to give away his favorite shoes just because they've gotten a little small, Alfie decides he's had enough. The headstrong emotions of a young runaway are humorously portrayed in the dialogue ("'May I give you a hug?' asked his mother. 'You may let me keep my shoes,' said Alfie") and in the art (Alfie's dignified expression as his mother helps him pack a bag). At his clever mother's suggestion, Alfie takes a lot of supplies; he can't get far with his heavy pack, and, after unloading everything in the backyard, takes off his favorite, too-tight shoes and puts them on his stuffed animal companion, Buddy Bear. With perfect timing-Alfie is just starting to feel homesick-his mom comes out with the welcome-home hug he is looking for. Bob “BobServo” Mackey, who parodied Cartoon Brew three years ago, is at it again. His latest comical stab at the Brew includes post titles like “50 Years of Turkmenistanimation” and “Cartoon Network? I was recenlty turned on to this very unique new site called Scampd, devoted to the art of Advertising Illustration and Design. It’s always nice to see a new site that focuses on a specific corner of the industry, and I’m excited to see this one grow.
Here’s a little more about Scampd in their own words:
“Named after the humble Scamp, a rough sketch sometimes supplied at the start of an illustration assignment, Scampd exists to celebrate the rich, diverse, and criminally underused art of illustration in advertising and design. We’ve just started publishing content, and are currently calling for submissions. I just stumbled upon this iphone app that contains a checklist you can bring to senior year critiques / design degree shows. I have to admit it’s a little cruel, but hopefully you’ll get a good chuckle along the way.

I was in need to restock my business cards when I found a great deal at overnight prints (sign up for their email list, they are great about having sales). I decided to quickly convert an old 2-sided design I had for last year's Surtex show and make it into a more general business card.
I put it up on twitter and unexpectedly got great response, so I thought I would put it up here as well. Stay tuned for more promo-related posts here very soon.

Sorry guys for the lack of posting. I've been busy with a new book and mommy duties. This is another card I illustrated for Ripple. It already sold (thanks June! xo) but there are still tons of beautiful cards to choose from. Ha! Stole this from Poe's Deadly Daughters, a blog for mystery lovers. Author E.J. Copperman lists the top 15 things that AREN'T true about being a writer. (You can read the rest of the post here.)
THINGS THAT AREN'T TRUE ABOUT BEING A WRITER
1. No, you wouldn't write a novel if you just had the time. If you're not writing one anyway, let's face it, you're probably not going to do it.
2. Almost no writers are "famous authors." I am, believe me, NOT a "famous author."
3. We all don't KNOW the famous authors, either. I don't have Stephen King's phone number, but he can have my email address if he'd like it.
4. Our main characters are NOT all based on us. And no, my books aren't set in my hometown, or any real town. No, they're not. No, not even that one.
5. We don't just sit around all day waiting for inspiration. Who has the time? We have to figure out new ways to get you to buy our PREVIOUS inspirations.
6. Mystery writers really couldn't solve crimes. I don't care what they do on CASTLE.
7. We don't type "THE END" on a piece of paper in a typewriter anymore. Haven't for decades.
8. We don't all drink. I, for example, have a beer about every two months. SOME of us drink, and not that often to excess. It sure as hell isn't part of the creative process.
9. Mystery writers don't ALWAYS "kill off" people we don't really like. Okay, maybe we do. But not ALL the time.
10. No, it's not a good idea to set a mystery novel at a mystery writing convention, and no, you didn't just think of that yourself. EVERYBODY has thought of that.
11. Many of us, believe it or not, DON'T have classical music playing whenever we're working.
12. There are a couple of us who have developed at least rudimentary social skills.
13. We have no control over the covers on our books. None. We're consulted once in a while, and then the publisher does what they want. (Personally, I'm thrilled with the cover of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEED, but I still didn't have anything to do with its design).
14. Sometimes, we don't even write our own titles.
15. Writing is NOT fun. HAVING WRITTEN, on the other hand, is a blast. I recommend it highly.
