UK based Ian Stevenson is a cartoonist disguised as an “artist”. Whatever he calls himself, I like what he does. Here’s one of his groovy music videos from a few years ago. This’ll put you in a good mood:

Roman Klonek is a Polish illustrator in Dusseldorf, Germany. His Eastern European roots are very evident in his work, which is often colorful woodcuts of natural scenes full of interesting characters. As Roman states about his work, “You will find a bizarre balancing act between propaganda, folklore and pop.”

Design Sponge's Grace Bonney was hosting a book giveaway for a free personalized copy of "Design Sponge at Home," their summer newspaper and some of the ribbons flowers featured in the book. It's one of my favorite inspiration sites so I had to enter, even just for fun. I simply had to take a photo of the spot where the book would be placed, or where I would read it. This is my entry.
With the advancement of technology the doors are wide open for finding other authors, illustrators, and like-minded people to collaborate with to advance your career. I am always getting questions from SCBWI members who want to find a critique group. Most members think a critique group is just for writers, but illustrators can benefit from forming a group, just as much. Also, published authors are getting together to form marketing groups to help each other promote and sell their books (See opportunity below video.)
In person critique groups are really nice, but it is not always easy to find someone in your area with the same writing interests. Even after you get that job done, it is coordinate the meetings. But if you open up yourself up to forming an online critique group, those barriers are eliminated. Someone in California can very easily be in a group with someone in Texas, New Jersey, and Illinois, leaving you to focus on finding other writers on the same level with similar writing interests.
Yesterday, we talked about uTales.com. It is the advancement of technology that has made it possible for them to provide authors and illustrators the chance to collaborate on ebooks.
There are difference places you can use to pull your group together online. Laurie and I have been sharing spreadsheets with Google.docs, but you might want to check out Wiggio for your writer or illustrator groups.
- Upload and manage files in a shared folder.
- Allows you to send email, text and voice messages
- Created to-do lists and assign tasks
- Manage a shared calendar
- Host virtual meetings, conference calls and a chat room.
And it is completely free.
Natalie Zaman and Charlotte Bennardo author of a new book titled SIRENZ are forming a marketing group. If you have a new book or one coming out, you might want to give this strenthen in numbers marketing idea soem thought. Here is what they sent me.
Authors! We are Just Book It!, a group of YA/MG/PB authors working together to cross and group promote our books. Currently we are looking for new members who live in the NJ/NY/PA/CT/DE area to set up and attend book signings and other events. If you are interested, please email Charlotte Bennardo ([email protected]) for more details.
Talk tomorrow,
Kathy

...but my book hasn't! Well, you can still find it online, and as of now, I'm not sure it's still on B&N shelves. But in case you missed it, here's what it looked like.
I'm sure you have seen this, but in case you haven't here is the article about what you have always suspected.

Little character that will go on notecards and a couple of other things. She has a shadow below her on the floor that I need to deepen cause it totally doesn't show up. Rock on!
In the Gay Purr-ee production photo above is (left to right): Lee Orgel, Judy Garland, Henry G. Saperstein, Robert Goulet, Abe Levitow and Chuck Jones. Who was Lee Orgel you ask? Let Darrell Van Citters tell you.
Animator Van Citters is expanding on his great book about the history ofMr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol with an incredible blog containing additional information on the artists, writers, director and producers of this groundbreaking 1962 TV special.
Perhaps the most unsung of behind-the-scenes latter-day UPA personnel was Orgel – a talented, perhaps visionary, producer who had a successful career in 60s animation, as well as being a writer on the 1966 Batman TV show. Read all about him in two parts: Part 1 and Part 2.

I'm just rounding up the last couple of drawings for the next zine. I'm looking forward to getting a new one printed. It's been a long time.
The 'classified ads' drawings (see last post) are just about finished and I'll try to post them by the end of the week. So, if you've bought some advertising space come back to see your hand illustrated ads. In the meantime I leave you with this craziness. Who knows what I'm ranting on about in this drawing. It's very late at night, the time of night when you shouldn't really be allowed a pen and paper and a blog.

The Japan Times recently published an article entitled Fate’s path led Canadian to Kamakura: Heather Willson makes her mark, keeps focused on road ahead and her Cambodia school. The school referred to in the article, Butterfly School, is a free English school in the village of Popeae, near Udong, Cambodia, established by Heather Willson with Head Teacher Sovann Phon in September 2005.
Last year we were pleased to have the Butterfly School involved with our Spirit of PaperTigers Outreach Project. Holly Thompson, author and SCBWI Tokyo regional advisor, hand delivered a 2010 Spirit of PaperTigers Book Set to the school. The photo accompanying the Japan Times article (and reprinted here) shows Heather reading one of the 2010 Spirit of PaperTigers books, My Little Round House, to the Butterfly School students.

Due to various delays the production time of the Daemon in the Mist visual novel is taking a bit longer than expected.
Books bring worlds to life through word but translating that world into a visual medium is a whole different thing entirely. When I wrote Daemons in the Mist I never imagined that I would then have to visually create the world of The Marked Ones. It’s no easy task but I hope in the end that you will be able to enjoy a game that is just as carefully crafted as everything else you have come to expect from KatGirl Studio.
Defining a Style
Nualla
Here is an early concept design for Nualla. I captured her other-earthly quality but she looked a bit too soft. Also the production team decided this anime style looked a little outdated. So I went back to the drawing board for a second go.
This was the next concept design for Nualla which got the green light.
But after a few more meetings we decided to go with this more refined design. It’s a bit more work but we only want the best for this visual novel.
Patrick
With Patrick it was all about the eyes, let me tell you black brown eyes are really hard to translate into anime form.

This is awesome. Here's an article. Here's the Little Free Library site
Since it's back-to-school time, I thought I'd share some photos of my favorite school visit souvenir. Some New Jersey public school students made this amazing gift for me a couple of years ago. Is there anything better than a shoebox diorama? No. No, there isn't.
Dear Matt, Thank you for taking out time from your schedule to come to our school. Good luck on the future books you illustrate. It means a lot to us. Sincerely, Mrs. Abella's Class.
