Undaunted by the fact that he is now separated , Murgatroyd continues to troll for love.

Busy. Busy. Busy.
Quickly dashed this one off early… pant pant pant.
Oh, and, of course you must stop by Marion and Laura‘s blogs to check out their awesome HoHoDooDa take for the day!
A few weeks ago I received an email from a real estate manager from Las Vegas looking for me. Someone sent her a package intended for me from Highlights Magazine and she wanted to know my address so she could forward it my way. It turned out that this package was sent to me in 2008 and being in the military we were reassigned and I never received it.
I'm not sure what the backstory is. I'm guessing the new renters held on to it and never returned it to the post office for it to be forwarded on to me and when they left the new renters found it? Maybe?
Regardless, I am amazed and grateful to be receiving the "Visual Puzzle of the Year" for 2008.
Thank You, 3 years later, Highlights! I'm so honored.
Here is the illustration and a
link to my
blog post back then regarding the process of this challenging project.

Our dog 'Fancy' has been diagnosed with cancer 3 weeks ago, so I decided to do a drawing of her every evening from that day onward. One "Fancy' a day.
I have been adjusting to being home and it's amazing how long it takes to fit back into the groove of working in my studio after traveling so long.
I am trying to find the 'right' sheep for a story I wrote. This needs to be a 'mad' sheep. (No, I'm not going to use a cow for the character!) I want it simple and young. I'm amazed at how long this is taking to nail the right one!
Here's this morning's sketch book.
Adios.
I finally had a chance to hem my Spoonflower tea towel calendar! It's formatted for cotton-linen so that each fat quarter is a tea towel. The fabric arrived with some crop marks in the corner so you just trim the fabric so that it's straight then hem. I ironed the hem on both sides, then cut a little triangle from the corner to reduce bulk before sewing. It's really very quick and easy.
Here's another picture:
I haven't washed the fabric yet, and it has a little stiffness so that it actually hangs nicely on the wall with just two pins at either corner.
Available onSpoonflower

Jolie Stekly has a great interview with my agent, Ginger Knowlton. Ginger will be sharing her views, along with three other agents, on the final panel of the SCBWI Winter conference. And Ginger mentions me in the interview, yay!!
I joined Klout a while back because I was curious about the service and also because of a recommendation in a blog I respect that writers should be aware of their Klout score.
It was fun at first, checking out what various people's Klout scores were and playing around with the tools. But then I became aware of a few negative points:
1. My Klout score didn't bring me any real benefits.
2. I checked my Klout score way too often, angsting about fluctuations. ("Uh-oh, I'm going away on vacation! My Klout score is going to drop!")
3. The accuracy was questionable, with so many factors not being taken into account.
4. I started feeling hypocritical and slimy. I'm always going on about how the number of followers and other numbers aren't nearly as important as meaningful connections. So why was I so concerned about my Klout score?!? Plus I became aware that it was influencing how I tweeted…which made me feel even more hypocritical and slimy.
As soon as I submitted my opt-out request today, I felt a tremendous relief.
Before Klout fans jump on me, let me point out that I opted out of Klout because of my own weakness/angsting, not because Klout is Bad.
I'm going to take all the time I was spending thinking about Klout and put it into writing and illustrating instead. :-)

Apologies for the lack of posting, it's been a busy few weeks while we get ready for family visits and the holidays. This weekend we got our tree at a neighboring farm. It's been a lot of fun starting new traditions with a little one in tow.
On the work front I am most excited that we have just found a wonderful babysitter to come to our house so that I can at last have concentrated work hours again. Until now, Bruno and I have been trading off with the baby (he works at home too), and it's been nearly impossible to finish any of the projects on my list. I am hopeful that the new year will bring lots of productivity!
Until then, hope the coming weeks are filled with lots of holiday fun for you and yours...

Whoa, how did it get to be mid-December already? I was laid low last week with the cold-sinus-bronchitis thing that's been going around here, and am emerging from the fog. Still managed to make progress on artwork, thankfully. (One nice thing about working for yourself is you can nap if you really, really need to. At your desk! Shhh... don't tell anyone.)
Here's a new map for an upcoming issue of
Connecticut Cottages & Gardens magazine. This one put me in a festive, wintery mood!

Wool pompom wood thrush, stunning photography by Celine Kim |
This is a little glimpse of my table from City of Craft. I had painted some branches for my display and they turned out to be perfect for hanging my wool pompom bird ornaments. These birds were definitely the stars at my table, they sold out at A Handmade Holiday, then at City of Craft by noon on Saturday and the few more I managed to make in the evening were gone by the end of day two.
I didn't invent pompom birds, but I think people liked the way these birds have a mix of colours that make them really looked like chickadees, or, (pictured above) a wood thrush. After the first batch I took
Kalpna's suggestion and added glass bead eyes. This one was my favourite, so I'm extra happy it was captured in a beautiful photograph by the talented show photographer
Celine Kim.
As always I'm left stunned by the incredible skill of lovely
Becky in creating and managing such a wonderful, inspiring and also really really fun craft show. I can show you the treats I brought home in another post, but it was also about meeting new people, chatting about crafts and being inspired by everyone's creations, and, of course, winning a prize at
Nutso (thanks to
Chevaux de Bois for the Nutso board and
Bespoke Uprising for donating my lovely fabric bundle prize!). Thank you to all the friends how visited, I loved seeing everyone.
Yesterday I was so tired I just watched a lot of tv and did a little quiet hand sewing for something I had the notion to make but no time until now. hint: she will make her appearance in my next post once her accessories are finished!

Sorry about the lack of posts! I've been so busy with the comic I barely have time to raise my head. And this is a particularly difficult sequence, Maddy, Harry and Silvio find themselves lost in a dark cave, with strange sounds all around them. So, lots and lots of shading. This page took so long I'm actually running a bit behind my self imposed deadline, instead of getting to page 40 by Christmas I'll probably somewhere between page 35 and 37. Close enough, I think. Overall I'm still on track.
On breaks I've been reading
Fantagraphics first Pogo collection, which I simply can't say enough good things about. Run out and get it as soon as you can.

I made these cards a while ago but thought it was a bit early to post them. Now that they are playing Christmas songs on the radio I feel it's time! The cards feature Billy modeling a very fetching felt hat!

Spotted! A hardback copy of Fluff and Billy in the St Pancras branch of Foyles. I may have pulled it out slightly for the photo! I am pleased to say that Fluff and Billy is also for sale in branches of Waitrose now.
Wishing you all a splendid holiday season - I am taking a mini blog break to focus on getting some work done before the holiday break.
