The Buzz About the Book

“One of the aspects that makes the little children’s books by David Chuka so endearing is that he enters territory and vocabulary that in other circumstances would be either verboten or at least judged inappropriate. But instead of writing a story of questionable taste, Chuka creates some hilarious situations and then makes a point of allowing learning from them…Chuka’s drawings match the joy of his story and once again he has written a brave little book that will greatly appeal to kids – and to their parents! Very high quality work from David Chuka.” ~ 5 Star Review, Grady Harp, Top 100 Reviewer, Amazon

“Yes dear readers kids now have a new friend called the Fart Monster. A buddy that lets them off the hook big time. In this imaginative story by David Chuka your child’s imagination will leap to new bounds in giving kids cover for what comes so naturally. The great thing about this is you don’t have to hold your nose to enjoy a fun story that is sure to have you and child laughing out loud.” ~ 5 Star Review, StevieV, Amazon

“I laughed all the way through this story. I know that boys think farting is funny and I’m sure my grands will love this picture book. Of course us adults have to use some animation, so we can join in the fun. The pictures rock with this simple story, and there are some problem solving discussed and shared with another character. However, the overall problem is, ‘Billy is getting blamed for something you didn’t do’. In the end the problem is solved and the relationship is forever. Job well done. I’m still laughing. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Amazon Customer, Amazon

“This is a not too serious book for kids who love to LAUGH OUT LOUD. I bought it for my nephew and he laughed and laughed and I had to ask him twice to get my IPAD back. But anyway, The book is funny with lots of illustrations that kids love. The illustrations are really good and captivating for a young audience. Not only that the book also gives a moral story at the end of the book. It teaches kids discipline and manners, which is something very valuable in today’s society. Overall good book.” ~ 5 Star Review, Jomy K., Amazon

“THIS BOOK IS HILARIOUS! My 8 year old son stated. He highly recommends it, and also poses the age old question: “Why does Monster keep farting?” ” ~ 5 Star Review, Bkustom, Amazon

The Buzz About the Book

Maisy and the Missing Mice is a fun chapter book featuring a smart and sassy tween girl as the title character; a solid and interesting plot featuring age-appropriate intrigue and suspense; and some terrific writing that carries the reader on a journey as a detective uncovering clues and solving the mystery of who stole the missing mice. I highly recommend this book as a read aloud book for children between the ages of 6 and 10 or for independent readers between the ages of 7 and 12 who love to read mysteries.” ~ Renee, Mother Daughter Book Reviews

“Woodrum certainly knows her target audience and does a very nice job with the character development of Maisy. This is an incredibly kid-friendly story that makes a great introduction to the genre of mystery for newly independent readers. It’s a quick page turning read that encourages kids to think outside of the box.” ~ The Children’s Book Review

“The delights from this book start with the cover art and continue with a fun story that is well-written.” ~ 5 Star Review, R. Johnson, Amazon

“My name is Kat. I am 9 years old. I would rate this a five because I like everything about it, the mystery the most. It was fun to read. My favorite part was the mystery and the end. I love this book so much. I think other kids would love it too because it has mystery and most kids would like mystery books. Most mystery books have a good mystery. “I knew I would love this book simply because I knew it would remind me of the mystery books I read in my childhood. I really love how much trust the teachers and community as a whole put in Maisy. She is well deserving of their admiration as the way she finds clues and finds the mascot for the school is well thought out. This is a story any child would love to read. I hope Maisy continues to solve mysteries…” ~ 5 Star Review, Josh, Amazon

3. BOOK BLAST: A different kind of safari

I’m pleased to be contributing this review to the Small Fry Safari Readers Challenge 2014, hosted by The Bookshelf Gargoyle, specifically under the category “A book with something related to safari in the title”. Click HERE for more information.

A Different Kind of Safari Helen Hipp

About the Book

Title: A Different Kind of Safari | Author: Helen C. Hipp | Publication Date: March 19, 2013 | Publisher: A Different Kind of Safari LLC | Pages: 32 | Recommended Ages: 5 to 10

Summary: What do you need to feel happy about being different? Based loosely on real life experiences, this heartwarming and powerful book illustrates how self-awareness, and courage help a young boy named Raymond learn the difference between seeing things as they appear to be and seeing things as they are. Feeling “different and lonely” Raymond befriends a hippo while on Safari in Africa. Unlike other grey hippos, this hippo is pink. Ray is soon carried into a world beyond labels and challenging assumptions. You will never guess what happens next!

The Inspiration Behind the Story by Helen Hipp

A Different Kind of Safari inside page

Inspired by real-life adventure, the story behind the story unfolded when I went on an African safari back in 2001. The trip was lead by my father whose dream was to share the safari experience with his family. Little did I know that this trip was going to incite me to write a children’s adventure book but it did.

The storyline made it appearance when my family spotted a pod of hippos and one was pink! My son Ray fourteen at the time immediately named her “Rosie”. Curious and wanting to learn more about this hippo we asked the guide many questions about hippos and hippo behavior. Specifically I wanted to know why the pink hippo stood so far outside of her pod. The familiarity of the guides answer took me by surprise, he explained that “Rosie” was tolerated but not necessarily accepted by the herd because of her differences. As a parent of a child with special needs I immediately felt a strong affiliation with Rosie’s situation as did my son Ray who has experienced his own challenges with acceptance. Inspired, I decided to share the story with the world by weaving them into a children’s adventure book that celebrates differences. The book is entitled “A Different Kind of Safari”. Find out what you can learn from Rosie the pink hippo, and how you can share those lessons with the children in your life.

The Buzz About the Book

“A timeless book, that will speak to everyone. To be enjoyed over and over again! A fun, yet very thought provoking story for all ages. If books had a satisfaction guarantee, this one would be on the top of the list. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Adden B. Chrystie, Amazon

“A Different Kind of Safari is truly a different kind of children’s book! The beautiful artwork bring a very special story to life and I am excited the book is now available in audio format for an added bonus while driving kids around town! I particularly love the message of the book, which teaches us to celebrate our unique differences through Rosie the Pink Hippo rather than allow them to keep us from exploring our potentials. I highly recommend this book to all parents and special needs educators in particular. Thank you for writing this wonderful story!” ~ 5 Star Review, missladyjane, Barnes and Noble

“I really enjoyed this book. The illustrations were beautiful. I found this book to be very interesting and it was written from real life experiences. A Different Kind of Safari draws you in along with Ray on his journey to find his happiness and the answers to his questions. I recommend this book to children that are of grade school age but yet many younger children may enjoy the illustrations.” ~ 5 Star Review, Whittle House, Goodreads

“The book has a great story. The illustrations are amazing!!!!! Get this book! All children from the young to the old will love this book. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Mel, Amazon

“A Different Kind of Safari is not only a good book, but a great story! It is not only for caregivers, teachers and parents, but for anyone who has ever felt out of place. A pink hippo named “Rosie” and her friend “Ray” take a journey and explore their similarities and differences on the river of life. Self- acceptance and the acceptance of others is exquisitely conveyed in a fresh, FUN way through this sweet tail. It is a prize for all libraries!” ~ 5 Star Review, Anna Wood, Barnes and Noble

5. BOOK BLAST: Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy

Mother Daughter Book Reviews is pleased to be coordinating this Book Blast on behalf of author Jourden Cleghorn who writes under the pen name of Teddy O’Malley.

Jourden was recently involved in a serious automobile accident resulting in severe injuries just days after her new book, Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy, was published in May 2014. The indie author community has come together to support this young author/illustrator during this challenging time. Please read below to see what you can do to help in a small way.

Destiny and Faith by Teddy O'Malley

Title: Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy | Author: Teddy O’Malley | Publication Date: May 11, 2014 | Publisher: Independent | Pages: 62 | Recommended Ages: 6 to 10

AmazonGoodreads

The Buzz

“Anyone who’s tried to buy a book or birthday card for a child who isn’t white will know how few are available. Golden hair and blue eyes rule. I was delighted by Destiny and Faith, who are mixed race/bi-racial, perfect for some children very close to me. However, let me quickly say that this is a story for all children. A school for twins is such a great idea and Destiny and Faith’s adventures have a universal message about friendship and learning how to get along with each other. This would also be a good book for actual twins as some of the issues that arise in twin relationships come up in the story.” ~ 5 Star Review, Mary Josephina Cade, Amazon

“I just finished reading this book. I got it for my daughter and decided to read it myself. It is so ORIGINAL and totally ADORABLE! A MUST READ for young children looking to read their FIRST CHAPTER BOOK! My daughter LOVES it!! I highly recommend this book!! ” ~ 5 Star Review, radams, Amazon

“A great story for young girls, with lots of fun dialogue. Accompanied throughout by black and white drawings. These capture the body language and expressions of the different characters perfectly. Looking forward to more in the Destiny and Faith series.” ~ 5 Star Review, M.J. Kinsman, Amazon

About the Author: Teddy O’Malley

Teddy O'Malley AuthorJourden Cleghorn, who writes and illustrates children’s books under the pen name Teddy O’ Malley, was born in in Saint Louis, Missouri. She has traveled all over the United States and enjoys learning about new things and other cultures. She dreams of visiting a foreign country. She has enjoyed studying Spanish, German, and now Italian as well. Jourden paired her language skills with pictures of puppies to write Tell Me How You Say Good Night, a bedtime story. How You Can Help

On Thursday, May 15, 2014, Jourden was the passenger in a small car when a much larger truck turned in front of them. She suffered severe injuries as a result of this accident including a cracked sternum, punctured lung, broken arm, and broken foot. Unforutnately, the nature and severity of Jourden’s injuries have limited her ability to promote her books effectively. I was very moved when I was approached by a member of the Facebook group, “Fun-tastic Children’s Books ” (of which Jourden is an active member) to help this young author. This wonderful group took it upon themselves to promote Jourden’s books on her behalf. They bought, reviewed, tweeted and shared her books throughout social media and are sponsoring (along with MDBR) the giveaway below.

If you should choose to enter the giveaway below (open worldwide), you will see an option to earn 10 extra entries in the giveaway by purchasing a copy of Teddy O’Malley’s latest book, Destiny and Faith Go To Twincentric Academy from Amazon for only 99 cents. I hope you will consider helping out the author in this small way.

Of note, during her recovery, Jourden found the inspiration for another children’s book. It will be about a child recovering from a car crash and having to cope with learning to write with the opposite hand, and other hardships that must be overcome during the healing process. Jourden usually writes with her right hand, but plans to illustrate the book using her left. She wants to show that hardships can be overcome if one does not give up.

The Buzz

Carlo the Mouse: “My son chose this book to read and really liked it. He rated it 5* and said it was “awesome”. He’s almost five. So that’s a good fit. If I could make one recommendation, it would be to watch out for repeating the same sentence structure over and over. It’s a minor thing but could improve overall flow. The pictures were adorable. Well done Mrs. D.” ~ 5 Star Review, Simone B., Amazon

Carlo the Mouse: “Another gem from Mrs. D.! This is the first in a series of several books, and the titles of those are just as intriguing as this one. The interchange between the characters goes beyond just rules and regulations. Even small children will see just how caring and loving this family is with each other. There are definitely different personalities, and conflicts, as in every family. Carlo’s is one that answers those challenges with love and firmness. The pictures are adorable! Every facial expression, every nuance of action, is so well-thought-out. The colors are appealing, and the story’s lesson is simple enough for even the youngest of readers. There is a challenge here in some of the vocabulary used in the book. I welcome that. The youngsters who get this story read to them are privileged in this regard, for they can learn new words and what they mean. A child whose vocabulary is extended beyond his or her comfort zone is a child who will learn and grow into an intelligent adult. I highly recommend this story, and hope that I will get the chance to read more of Carlo’s adventures.” ~ 5 Star Review, Kitty Muse Book Reviews, Amazon

Carlo the Mouse: “As a grown-up, I fell in love with this adorable character the moment I looked at the first illustration. I had as much pleasure reading this book as my son did. Sometimes, a sample book like this one, gives more to a child then books chosen by the school experts. Now we could hardly wait what the next book will hold. Thank you so much for making our children happy. Because of books like yours, our children will grow up happier, kinder, and smarter. Great story! Wonderful artwork! Astonishing children’s book! Because of books like yours, our children will grow up happier, kinder, and smarter.” ~ 5 Star Review, Olga G., Amazon

Good Morning, World!: “What a charming book of comparing generations and reminding us how children see the world! The illustrations are bright, colourful and sweet, and the story is so well written that it feels as though I am walking right beside the baby and grumpy Grandpa who clearly woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning! Thank you for a lovely book, Mrs. D!” ~ 5 Star Review, Multi-Testing Mommy, Amazon

Good Morning, World!: “This darling story of Baby Thomas and Grandpa was like I was taking a stroll along with them. The author must have pulled some of this story from a family experience. With her very creative imagination she must have been very tuned into actions and reactions of Baby Thomas. Then there was Grandpa who was very vocal and animated so she undoubtedly knew exactly what to write about Grandpa. Too funny! This book is a must read! I highly recommend this book.” ~ 5 Star Review, It’s Time to Read Mamaw, Amazon

Good Morning, World!: “This was a charming book. Following the differing perspectives of the Grandpa and the child, this book is a wonderful reminder about the importance of a positive attitude. I LOVED the joyful wonder in the child’s perspective, and cringed as I recognized some of the grandfather’s. What I love about all of Mrs. D’s books is that they share a message. They teach the adults as much as the kids. This message in particular touched me. It is a reminder about seeing from the eyes of a child. Exploring the world with an open mind, an open heart, and enthusiasm. Life is full of blessings, and sometimes we forget to notice them. Thank you Mrs. D for another 5 star children’s book.” ~ 5 Star Review, Kirstin P., Sunshine, Bubbles and Books

Thanks for hosting Lindsey as part of the Fox Talk Blog Tour. Each interview has given more and more insight into the author. I like what you say about how reading is a relationship between the writer and the author. I think that is a good way to look at it and I think it helps to understand why some books are loved by some and not really enjoyed by others. Makes sense to me!

10. Author Interview: Fox Talk

Today, we’re learning from L.E. Carmichael, author of Fox Talk: How Some Very Special Animals Helped Scientists Understand Communication

Think fast! What were your top three FAVORITE books as a child?

Answer:

Where the Red Fern Grows (Wilson Rawls)

Rilla of Ingleside (L. M. Montgomery)

These Happy Golden Years (Laura Ingalls Wilder)

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of each book? And which part of the books did you like the best? (Illustrations, writing style, text or message.).

A: For Red Fern, it’s the ending. Rawls does an amazing thing – he tells you on page 2 what’s going to happen, but by the time it does, you’re so wrapped up in the story it hits you like a freight train. I’ve read it probably ten times and now I start crying a page or two in advance, because I know what’s coming.

For my money, Rilla is one of the best books about war that’s ever been written – and it’s not even about the war itself. It’s about the impact World War I had on the people who DIDN’T go to fight, the women who stayed home, keeping frantically busy to distract themselves from what might be happening to their brothers and sons and sweethearts at the front. And the impact those losses have on the community. It’s a beautiful, heart-rending book.

When it comes to These Happy Golden Years, it’s all about the romance! Wilder does an amazing job of building the relationship between Laura and Almanzo, and like Laura, I could never decide whether it was the man or his horses I liked the best.

Now that you’re an author, what about the book do you think made it stick with you into adulthood?

A: I’d never though about it before you asked the question, but all of these books are historical fiction, and one thing they all have in common is that they create a really vivid sense of place and time – I always felt like I was right there with the characters! That’s something I strive for in my own writing, too, to help kids “see” things through words that they might never experience first hand.

Do you feel like any of these books have influenced your writing today? How? What are some other works that you believe have influenced you?

A: Most of what I read for pleasure is fiction, and most of what I write is nonfiction, so I’m not sure I can draw direct connections between other authors and what I do. Since I became a writer, though, I’m very aware of what’s going on below the surface of what I’m reading – part of my brain is enjoying the story, while part is watching HOW a writer is doing whatever he or she is doing – and I’m positive this awareness of great technique makes me a better writer.

If you were to write a children’s book, and your goal was to make sure it stuck with them into adulthood… what are some things you would incorporate into that book?

A: The books that really resonate with me are the ones that tell great stories, be they fictional or true. It’s a magical alchemy of person and place and plot and above all, emotion, an emotional response that a story creates in the reader. When I research, that’s what I look for: facts or ideas that create an emotional reaction for me, be it “cool!” or “gross!” or “oh wow” or “that’s terrible.” Those are the ones that go into the story.

I do think, though, that what the writer does is only half of what makes a book stick. Reading is communication between the writer and the reader – the reader has to bring his or her own ideas and experiences and culture and values to a story. The resonance you’re talking about has a lot to do with readers finding the perfect book for them at the perfect time – a book that speaks to whatever they’re going through. There’s a lot of luck involved!

When you were working on Fox Talk, what was your main goal?

A: I wanted to share the sense of wonder and amazement that I felt when I first heard about domestic foxes – to introduce kids to some truly incredible animals. I also wanted to show kids the scientific process, to reveal a little bit about how real people find answers to big, important questions like “how did we get domestic dogs” and “how is it possible for animals and humans to communicate.”

Once your book has been released, what are your goals for the future of your writing?

A: There’s always another book to be written – always another awesome story to share. One of the things I love about writing for kids is that I get to re-experience the excitement and awe of learning about the world for the first time. There are so many stories to tell!

One of those stories is coming out in August 2014, when Ashby-BP will release Fuzzy Forensics: DNA Fingerprinting Gets Wild. It’s about the place where wildlife conservation and forensic science meet, and the main thread of the book is an elk-kidnapping case I worked on as graduate student. I’m very excited about that one!

What do you want people to remember about you (as an author) and your books?

A: I hope people will remember me as a slightly nutty but adorable nerd – someone who makes science look cool. And I hope that someday a reader will come up to me and say that my books were the reason he or she became a scientist. I can’t think of any better compliment than that one!

Summary

When you talk to a dog, does the dog talk back? Many people think so. But for a long time, scientists didn’t know how our furry friends learned to communicate with people. Luckily, Russian scientist Dmitri Belyaev had a plan. If he could tame wild red foxes, he could learn how dogs first came from wolves. By studying the way these foxes changed during domestication, the mystery of communication would be solved at a last. More than 50 years after the experiment began, Belyaev’s foxes have become so tame, you can have one as a pet! Packed with eye-popping photos and first-hand research, FOX TALK reveals the story of these amazing animals… and everything they’ve taught us about wolves, dogs, and communication.

Early Buzz About the Book

“Fox Talk is an educational non-fiction title exploring the domestication of dogs by studying fox behaviour and communication. The information is presented with beautiful photographs, illustrations, bubbles/boxes of brief information, and descriptions of the research findings using age-appropriate language. I think this would be an excellent resource in elementary schools or for homeschoolers in particular and I highly recommend it.” ~ 5-Star Review, Mother Daughter Book Reviews

L.E. Carmichael Author

L.E. Carmichael

Lindsey Carmichael never outgrew that stage of childhood when nothing’s more fun than amazing your friends (and correcting your teachers!) with your stockpile of weird and wonderful facts. Her sense of wonder came in handy during her career as a scientist, and in 2006, she received the Governor General’s Medal for her PhD thesis, Ecological Genetics of Northern Wolves and Arctic Foxes. Lindsey finds talking about science more fun than doing it, however, and now writes for kids, teens, and occasionally adults (a sense of wonder is essential for this, too). Lindsey publishes under the name L E Carmichael, and her work has appeared in Dig, Highlights for Children, Kiki, and Canadian Tales of the Fantastic. Her published science books cover everything from animal migration to hybrid cars. When not digging up obscure or wacky details for her next nonfiction project, Lindsey’s probably working on her young adult fantasy novel.

This book it a great tool to help parents and teachers talk to children about loss of a pet and a loved one in general. I would highly recommend this book to everyone!” ~ 5 Star Review, Dawn N., Amazon

Good-bye Baby Max: “This colorful, hardcover children’s title Good-bye, Baby Max (Bridgeway Books, Texas, 2007) by Diane Cantrell & Heather Castles is special in its purpose of teaching an invaluable lesson: that of properly saying the final farewell to a loved one who is no more … Diane Cantrell has created a very purposeful book for children-one that is at once a story, a poem, and a healthy course of helping children get over grief. The book’s illustrations by Heather Castles are very appealing to a child’s imagination. There is a good deal here in Good-bye, Baby Max to learn for children ages 4 to 8 years and the 32-pages book is a must read for all kids of this age category.” ~ Ernest Dempsey, Book Corner

Good-bye Baby Max: “I bought this book to help my nieces and nephews deal with the loss of a beloved pet. The storyline and illustrations were used as a springboard to discuss their own loss. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has young children and is looking for a way to help them cope with a loss in their lives.” ~ 5 Star Review, Jeanne B., Amazon

Good-bye Baby Max: “[Good-bye, Baby Max] is a tender story about death, a tough topic for young children. Kindergarteners eagerly await spring and the hatching of the class’ three chick eggs. But one chick, Max, dies. What ensues is a gentle exploration of grief and its many expressions — from tears to songs to artwork. At the end, the surviving chicks’ peeps encourage the children to embrace the living without forgetting the dead.” ~ Michele Siuda Jacques, Detroit Free Press

12. Author Interview: Nancy O’Neill

GUESS WHAT?! Today, we hear from Nancy O’Neill, the author of Guess What Books!

Guess What? books are designed with rhyming clues and colorful illustrations that lead children on a fun guessing game and learning experience.

Nancy O'Neill-authorThink fast! What were your top three FAVORITE books as a child?

ANSWER: That’s a very long time ago so I can’t recall any specific books but I do remember having lots of Little Golden Books and classic nursery rhymes. In my pre-teen years however, I loved reading Nancy Drew books.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of each book? And which part of the books did you like the best? (Illustrations, writing style, text or message.).

I would venture to say that most adults would have a hard time analyzing why they liked the books they did as a child but as I look at the Golden Books today, I still like the ones that have the gold binding, simply because it looks expensive and sparkly. Nursery rhymes were always fun and they were easy to memorize.

Now that you’re an author, what about the book do you think made it stick with you into adulthood?

A: Rhyming stories and music lyrics have a lot in common – they both have a specific rhythm, beat, and flow. Since I grew up with both, it’s not surprising that I like to write in rhyme.

Do you feel like any of these books have influenced your writing today? How? What are some other works that you believe have influenced you?

A: The simplicity of the Golden Books and the rhythm and flow of rhyming books definitely had an impact on my own children’s series. After I had our son in 1995, one of the first types of books I read to him was nursery rhymes. At 22-months old, he was already reciting parts of the stories and was able to recognize specific words, which reinforced the idea that rhyming books help children develop their language skills much earlier. During his early years, I bought lots of books written in rhyme and studied various styles. Then I took notice of what he liked and the ones he wanted to read again and again.

Cover-Zoo (compressed)If you were to write a children’s book, and your goal was to make sure it stuck with them into adulthood… what are some things you would incorporate into that book?

A: Since I already have a children’s series called Guess What?, I hope I’ve incorporated aspects that will have longevity. Guess What books are written in simple four-line rhyming clues that describe people, places, and things within a specific theme for each book. As young children turn the page, colorful illustrations, done by kids around the world, reveal whether they guessed the object correctly. I hope my books will be ones that kids remember as they get older.

What was your inspiration for the Guess What Books?

A: Seeing our son enjoy rhyming stories when he was very young was all it took for me to try my hand at writing the same type. And what kid doesn’t ask their parents questions that start with “Guess what mommy?” or “What’s that Daddy?” The two concepts seemed to make sense together. Not only are the books filled with fun facts about various things but they have an educational value also. Learning doesn’t have to be boring.

When you are working on a children’s book, what is your main goal?

A: Writing good rhyming text that doesn’t sound forced or awkward is more difficult than many people think. Once I decide on the book’s theme, I try to come up with the 13 objects needed. I usually brainstorm other options in case I have trouble writing good rhyming clues for a particular object. The main goal for each book is to make the rhymes fun, easy to read or listen to, simple enough for preschool children to guess but also challenging enough so they have to give it some thought. The icing on the cake is when I get a review that says the books have re-readability or I get an email from a parent that says their child wants it read over and over again even though they know what the clues and pictures are.

Now that the first three Guess What Books have been released, what are your goals for the future of your writing?

A: I’m on the last few edits of the fourth book, “Guess What is in Grandma’s Garden?” which means the worldwide kids art contest will open in January 2014. The book is scheduled for release in late spring/early summer so kids will have about 3-4 months to submit their illustrations. I plan to release at least one GuessWhat? book per year but I also am open to other opportunities. I have other stories written that are not part of the series and I’d like to use kids’ art for those as well. So when the timing is right, I will start working on those.

What do you want people to remember about you (as an author) and your books?

A: If they remember nothing else about me or my books, I hope they remember that Guess What? Books are the ones that feature amazing illustrations done by kids around the world which is what makes my books so unique. I love giving kids opportunities to show case their talent, especially at a time when so many schools have cut out creative programs. I also use part of the proceeds to help support Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California so the books benefit kids in other ways as well.

13. Author Interview: Laura Kantor – The Colourblind Chameleon

Author of the Colourblind Chameleon and founder of Squidgy Face Books, Laura Kantor joins us today.

LK

Think fast! What were your top three FAVORITE books as a child?

ANSWER:

  1. The Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle
  2. Sammy the seal, Syd Hoff
  3. Where’s Spot, Eric Hill

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of each book? And which part of the books did you like the best? (Illustrations, writing style, text or message.).

A: Definitely the illustrations and colours, I always loved colourful books as a child which is probably why Eric Carle is always at the forefront of my mind when I think of children’s books.

I’d also have to say a real memory of childhood reading is my family – that lovely feeling of sitting with my parents or grandparents in the living room and having a book read to me over and over again, or falling asleep as I was curled up with my teddy bear hearing bed time stories.

Now that you’re an author, what about the book do you think made it stick with you into adulthood?

A: For me, I think the best part of Eric Carle’s The Hungry Caterpillar is when he becomes a butterfly. I remember when I was younger being so surprised and happy how the caterpillar had changed – and the illustrations are so colourful and beautiful, I just love it.

Do you feel like any of these books have influenced your writing today? How? What are some other works that you believe have influenced you?

A:  As a child I loved to read and devoured books, so I think it’s fair to say that I’ve been inspired by every book I have read, and probably taken an element of that story with me. Eric Carle, for example, would be the colourful drawings & surprise ending, ‘Where’s Spot’ – creating a loveable character (which hopefully we have with the chameleon!) and with Syd Hoff, with having rhymes.  All of these I hope I’ve been able to incorporate into The Colourblind Chameleon.

If you were to write a children’s book, and your goal was to make sure it stuck with them into adulthood… what are some things you would incorporate into that book?

A: Definitely key messages around self-esteem and being comfortable in your own skin and hopefully reinforcing these messages in children’s books will help kids to grow up knowing that it’s okay to be different. From speaking to friends who are parents and teachers, I also realise how books are a great way to teach children about certain issues, so I’d like to be able to do more of this in the future.

What was your inspiration for The Colourblind Chameleon?

A: I’d written a number of stories about animals who are different, all with happy endings, and the Colourblind Chameleon evolved from these – I remember thinking how funny it would be for a chameleon to turn the opposite colour to it’s surroundings, and it started from there really. As I continued writing, I wanted the book to have  a positive ending – that despite being different to his friends, he was able to find somewhere he could be happy, and also that his friends also realised that being different was a lot more fun!

What made you decide to start Squidgy Face Books and publish your own stories?

A: Being a published author has always been a dream of mine, and something I knew I would regret not doing. Earlier this year I spoke to a friend of a friend who mentioned self publishing eBooks, and it sounded like a great opportunity for indie authors to be able to distribute globally. Also, having a background in project management and marketing has helped me to take care of the business side of things, and it’s been a fantastic learning experience.

When you are working on a children’s book, what is your main goal?

A: I know this is a cheesy answer, but it’s definitely to make children smile. I want to create stories that light up children’s faces and that have positive messages that will resonate with the reader.

Once the Colourblind Chameleon has been released, what are your goal for the future of your writing AND Squidgy Face Books?

A: I would love to release more books, both a printed and interactive version of The Colourblind Chameleon, in addition to releasing other children stories – I have so many ready to go that I’m excited to share! I’d also like to help other indie authors with publishing their children’s stories, as I feel I have learnt so much over the last 12 months.

What do you want people to remember about you (as an author) and your books?

A: That’s a hard question! I hope that my books and stories can make people laugh, put a smile on anyone’s face and most importantly, convey positive messages to the reader.

About the Author

Laura Kantor, Author of The Colourblind Chameleon and Founder of Squidgy Face Books, grew up in Coventry, England, but has spent the last few years living overseas in Canada, Australia and now Singapore. In her free time she loves to travel, bake and write (of course!).

Laura’s writing is inspired by people she knows, with many characters being based upon her family and friends (and their unusual features!). Her work stars animals who don’t necessarily fit in with the rest, and the key message in each of these stories is that being different is a good thing and that there is a place for everyone in this world.

Early in 2013, Laura decided to self publish her own stories, and set up Squidgy Face Books (www.squidgyfacebooks.com), teaming up with Sarah Ray who was the perfect illustrator to bring her stories to life. A year of very late nights, lots of coffee and extremely long weekends later and their first release, The Colourblind Chameleon is ready to bring some colour and fun to squidgy faces around the world!

16. Author Interview: Kate Larkinson – Little Bird Lost

kate-deskI am happy to begin my author interviews with an interview with Kate Larkinson, the author of a new children’s book, Little Bird Lost. I think that there is SO much we can learn from animals, and I am especially happy that Kate published a book illustrated with actual photographs.

Think fast! What were your top three FAVORITE books as a child?

ANSWER:

  1. .My absolute out-and-out top favourite was A Fly Went By! .. at age 5 or 6 I memorised the whole book!
  2. The Enid Blyton Famous Five series .. but to be honest I can’t remember the actual titles or individual stories!
  3. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was also particularly memorable.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of each book? And which part of the books did you like the best? (Illustrations, writing style, text or message.).

A:

  1. I loved the rhythm of the words, the humour and the cute illustrations.
  2. Hot buttered toast, friendship and adventure! The writing style made these stories very easy to read.
  3. Magical, out-of-this-world adventure. I seem to remember that the writing style was a bit difficult for me, but I probably I was a bit young at the time.

Now that you’re an author, what about the book do you think made it stick with you into adulthood?

A: I think that all 3 books had great characters and were written in such a way that I could totally immerse myself in them, so they all make me recall my childhood and consequently make me feel quite cosy

Do you feel like any of these books have influenced your writing today? How? What are some other works that you believe have influenced you?

A:

I think that A Fly Went By probably influenced the way that I wrote Little Bird Lost, because that’s also rhythmical with quite a lot of humour. Two Shoes, New Shoes and other Shirley Hughes books, that I used to read to my daughter when she was young, were a similar influence.

What was your inspiration for the Little Bird Lost?

A:

Definitely the birds themselves! They acted out the story, and I just had to put the words to it! I was particularly staggered by the care and attention demonstrated by the parent birds for the weakest member of the family, because I’d always been led to believe that amongst animals only the fittest survive.

When you are working on a children’s book, what is your main goal?

A:

To make it accessible and interesting to the target audience. As an ex-child, librarian, parent and now grandparent I was able to imagine myself into the child-parent audience when I was writing and reviewing Little Bird Lost, and then read it to our grandson and friends’ children to gauge their reaction, which was awesomely good J

Now that Little Bird Lost has been released, what are your goals for the future of your writing?

A:

We do have some more photos of another nest of birds taking their first flight, and after the excitement of getting our first book finally published I did start toying with the idea of Little Bird Flies! But then again, I’ve always been too busy and short of time, and I still want to learn to play the piano!

What do you want people to remember about you (as an author) and your books?

A:

I’d really like people to enjoy the book as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it, and to become more aware of how astounding all the little creatures around us really are, and how much we can learn from them!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

One of the baby birds seems to be missing. His greedy siblings have pushed him out of view! A tale of sibling rivalry and their parents love for ALL their offspring.

The series of high-quality photographs accompanied by the simple rhyming tale provide a rare opportunity of a ‘birds-eye’ view into the nest. The reading content is aimed at 3-5 year-olds, but the photographs and the story that they tell will fascinate all age groups. The length and content make it a perfect bedtime story, a great start for beginner readers and a superb study of the natural world that demonstrates how care and compassion persists amongst even the tiniest of creatures.

Steve Larkinson spotted this family of swallows in the eaves of a small bakery in south-west France and this delightful story unfolded as he photographed them. Kate Larkinson added the words in rhyming couplets and created the book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

“I’m an accidental author! I became an author quite by chance when my husband Steve returned from the bakery with a baguette and some amazing photos! The photos were of a swallow’s nest that he’d spotted in the eaves of the bread shop. Besides being great quality photos, revealing wildlife like I’d never seen before, they told a beautiful tale that I think is worth sharing as widely as possible.

It took me a couple of years to find time to assemble the photos and think about the accompanying words, but once I got started it all fell into place quite easily. Then followed a few more years of trying to find an agent to help get it published! While I got lots of encouraging replies, I was unable to find an agent who could take it on. In the meantime, e-books became more and more popular so I finally set about publishing it myself on Kindle, and Little Bird Lost was born! The feedback both from friends and complete strangers was staggeringly encouraging, so I spent the next few months working on the print edition, and that is now also available on Amazon. All very exciting!

My background is in librarianship, mainly in further education, university and research libraries, and in parenting and grand-parenting!”

17. Author Interview: Dennis Canfield

Just in time for the holidays, Dennis Canfield, author of Back to Christmas joins us…

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Think fast! What were your top three FAVORITE books as a child?

ANSWER: The first two are easy: “Man Eaters of Kumaon,” by Jim Corbett, about hunting man eating tigers in Kumaon province, India, in the early 1900s, and “The Fighters” about WWI fighter pilots. I’m sure I read both of those books at least half a dozen times each before I was 12. After that is probably “Treasure Island,” by Robert Louis Stevenson.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of each book? And which part of the books did you like the best? (Illustrations, writing style, text or message.).

A:  I remember man-eaters being really a collection of several short stories about each animal he faced, with one chapter about his Robin, his beloved spaniel, and the adventures they had together. From fighters I remember how grim it was, and the point the book made that fighter pilots had a very high mortality rate, though as mentioned above, I don’t think I really connected with that at a more than superficial level. From Treasure Island, I remember how well Stevenson put me in each scene, whether at the inn, or on the ship or on the island, and I remember how vividly he drew each character.

Back to Christmas 2013 - ebook Cover 6 PenguinNow that you’re an author, what about the book do you think made it stick with you into adulthood?

A: From “Man Eaters” I remember the tension, waiting for the scene when he would come upon the tiger or leopard, and the feeling  of constant danger the book evoked. From “Fighters,” I remember thinking how incredibly exhilarating it must have been to fly those early airplanes. At the age I read the book I didn’t give much thought to the horrors of killing and dying. I would read it quite a bit differently now, if I could find it. From Treasure Island, I recall the excitement and how the story forced me to keep reading, and the clear lines between good guys and bad guys.

Do you feel like any of these books have influenced your writing today? How? What are some other works that you believe have influenced you?

A: I’m sure Treasure Island has an influence on me to this day.  Any author would love to be able to create scenes and characters like Stevenson.

If you were to write a children’s book, and your goal was to make sure it stuck with them into adulthood… what are some things you would incorporate into that book?

A:  A positive message hidden under a lot of fun.

What was your inspiration?

A: Since this is a Christmas story, you can’t have better inspiration than “A Christmas Carol.” I listened to that story over and over again while I was writing mine, and often went back to scenes in my story and re-wrote them based on what I heard.

When you are working on a children’s book, what is your main goal?

A: I think children’s stories should be fun, but not just for children. The best children’s stories are just as enjoyable for adults, and my goal in writing Back to Christmas was to write a story the whole family could enjoy. I believe I did that.

Once your book has been released, what are your goals for the future of your writing?

A:  Not clear. I have an idea or two for another young adult book. At some point I’d like to write a full length novel targeted at the adult market.

What do you want people to remember about you (as an author) and your books?

A: That my stories were fun to read.

Thanks for reading and Merry Christmas!

18. Author Interview: Anna Whitehouse

I’m really excited to kick off author interviews on my blog. I’m on a mission to rediscover some of the children’s books that stuck with me as a child, but I want to hear from fellow authors too. Just in time for the holidays, we have Anna Whitehouse, author of The Last Santa joining us for our first author interview!

Item OneTHINK FAST! What were your top three favorite books as a child?

ANSWER: The Snowman, The Dark is Rising Series and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of each book? And which part of the books did you like the best? (Illustrations, writing style, text or message.).

A:The Snowman is simply a beautiful book, telling a story with only illustrations, which captured my imagination. The story is lovely and very poignant at the end.

I loved reading all the Narnia books, but the first one I read was The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and I was captivated by the story; it’s imaginative, adventurous and appealed to me as a girl who loved reading about magic and winter!

I still re-read the whole Dark is Rising sequence regularly, it creates the same sense of mystery and wonder for me every time and the books are all very different in atmosphere, which kept my interest as a young child.

Now that you’re an author, what about the book do you think made it stick with you into adulthood?

A: All of the above books created a world for me to escape into.  I loved getting lost in the stories!  They all feature likeable, strong characters too.

Do you feel like any of these books have influenced your writing today? How? What are some other works that you believe have influenced you?

I feel sure that all three  books influenced my desire to write fantasy and create a world which hopefully captivates young children. I also see a theme….winter!  I’ve got very fond memories of childhood where it seemed to snow every year and the Dark is Rising always captured that wintry snowy landscape perfectly for me.

If you were to write a children’s book, and your goal was to make sure it stuck with them into adulthood… what are some things you would incorporate into that book?

A: A sense of wonder, family and beautiful illustrations.

What was your inspiration for the The Last Santa?

A: My dad had the original idea when I was about ten.  I wrote an early version of it aged ten, then re-wrote it several times in my teenage years and my twenties.  I decide this year was the year to write the final draft, partly because my dad kept saying I should, but also I really believe the basic idea behind the story is great.

When you are working on a children’s book, what is your main goal?

A: To write  a story which really captivates the reader’s imagination.

Now that The Last Santa has been released, what are your goals for the future of your writing?

A: I plan to write a sequel, and I also run a Medieval Wedding Poetry website, where I create fun medieval style ballads for castle weddings worldwide.  I also want to write picture books.

What do you want people to remember about you (as an author) and your book?

A: Ooh, I just want children to enjoy my book and get lost in the magical world of The Last Santa. If parents enjoy reading it to their children, fabulous!

Book Trailer

The Early Buzz

“The Adventures of Lovable Lobo: Lobo’s Howliday is a children’s book written by C.L. Murphy. Lobo and his friend Roxy, the raven, are surprised when an owl comes to see Lobo with a special delivery. Within the bag is Arty, an Arctic mouse who has an urgent request from Santa. Santa needs Lobo’s help this year, and the three of them set off for the North Pole. Along the way, they meet an Arctic fox, who lets them stay the night in his den and a polar bear who transports them across icy water. An Arctic wolf accompanies them for the rest of the journey to Santa’s Village, where an Arctic hare is waiting for them. Santa has updated his method of delivering gifts on Christmas, but he’s got a problem that Lobo can help him with.

I was spellbound reading The Adventures of Lovable Lobo: Lobo’s Howliday. C.L. Murphy’s artwork is simply amazing. Each page is filled with images you can get lost in: lush green forests, sparkling night skies, snowy expanses, and the animals have personality and incredible appeal. If you’re lacking in Christmas spirit this year, no matter what your age, spending some time with Lobo, Roxy, and Arty will soon change your attitude. Lobo’s Howliday is also a great way to introduce a child to the Northern Lights, the Arctic, and the amazing animals that live there (see if you can find the Orca!). I’ve already recommended The Adventures of Lovable Lobo: Lobo’s Howliday to friends who have children or grandchildren. It’s a very special book. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Jack Magnus, Readers Favorite

C.L. Murphy and Lovable Lobo

C.L. Murphy and Lovable Lobo

While new to the children’s book writing and illustrating scene, C.L. has been doodling her way through life since she won a school wide poster contest in the third grade. She’s had the pleasure of working as an artist in residence, creating cartoons and painting murals with the children at local elementary schools. She adores the wonder and curiosity of young children. For years, she filed picture book ideas away, until the reality of the empty nest syndrome sunk in and she decided to bring her favorite one to fruition.

She based the character, Lovable Lobo, on something very dear to her heart, a real wolf that she’s raised for the last 13 years. She’s felt the need to protect him his entire life, primarily due to the preconceived notions that wolves are to be feared.

She lives amongst the wildlife in an enchanted forest in the beautiful Oregon wilderness. She has always appreciated nature and animals have always played a major role in her life. She was that little girl who brought home the strays asking “Can we please keep it?” At an early age she realized her connection with animals by training a wild bluejay to appear on command to take food from her hand.

Check out her book series and discover that you, too, will find Lobo lovable.

The Buzz

“Through the storytelling of Beverly Stowe McClure and the book illustrations of Bridget McKenna, the reader is drawn to feel the pain of poverty and choices that must be made due to economic circumstance. We are drawn into Jackie’s world by her giving spirit and root for her every word of the way. And when all is said and done … We, too, believe in the miracle of a Tumbleweed Christmas. Timely for the season and its reason, but also gives us reason to keep the Spirit of Christmas alive year ’round.” ~ 5 Star Review, Ruth C., Amazon

“I can’t think of a sweeter tale of the season than Tumbleweed Christmas.” ~ 5 Star Review, Cheryl M., Amazon

“This is a delightful 24 page book which shows the reader about selflessness. Many parent’s give up much to make things work when they don’t have a lot of money, and being creative is certainly a key in such situations. Jackie gave up what was dear to her the most to be able to give gifts to her family so they had something to open on Christmas day. In many ways, gift giving has gone out of control. The most expensive items are not necessarily the best. Sometimes it’s the handmade items or drawings that come from the heart that are truly memorable. A gift from the heart is what truly matters most, and it doesn’t have to be much. Children and parent’s alike will enjoy this story because it touches upon one of the best gifts in the world that we can give–LOVE!” ~ 5 Star Review, Children’s Book Reviewer, Amazon

24. Introduction

So… It begins.

One year ago, after four years of planning, I finally launched my publishing company, Gerbil Meets Mouse Publishing. I had a plan; I was going to create books that educated, inspired, and empowered young people of today… and the catch? They were going to be illustrated using photographs of actual animals (prominently gerbils) on a green screen… for that extra “WOW” factor.

The first year of my new adventure went GREAT. The company published three titles, and I received a lot of positive feedback from my readers.

But then I started thinking about my own childhood, and the books that were found in my bookshelf. And I began to wonder… What made me remember them? What component in them made them stick? How was it, that even though I read them almost 15 years ago, I can still remember the way they made me feel? Why did I ask my father/mother to read them over and over again?

What was so special about them and how can I make sure my own books create memories for my readers?

So I began to make a list of all of the books I remembered from my childhood. Most of them I could recall a significant portion of the plot. Some, I could remember one or the other. Then, I began to search them out (My mother kept a select few, but not all of them, and a lot of them are now discontinued.). Now, here I am, ready to begin my nostalgic journey and share it with you.

A few other points:

  • Can you remember a children’s book that stuck with you? One I haven’t mentioned? Maybe I read it too. PLEASE email me with the titles/authors/plots of some of the children’s books you remember. You might be able to help me on my search!
  • Take a look at the “What’s it called?” Section. Updated periodically, there are some books that I can remember certain things about, but not the title. Can you help me figure it out?
  • Do you have old children’s book in your attic or basement? I may be looking for titles that are no longer available, and you might just have them. Take a look at the “Unforgotten Titles” section and see if I’ve found a copy yet. OR Email me!
