1. Children and Learning

Many students struggle or face challenges coping with their school work specifically reading, writing and

mathematics.  These challenges and obstacles that these students face, must be catered for by especially the

teachers as their immediate formal instructors.  If these learning difficulties are left undiagnosed, students will

be stifled and continued underperformance will perpetuate the school system.  It is therefore, very critical

that teachers are able to carefully identify these symptoms and make a diagnosis based on their observation.

The teacher should also be cognizant of the fact that these students, when identified are not less intelligent

or do not have the ability to learn, but that they face extreme intrinsic and extrinsic challenges that prevent

them from grasping specific tasks.  Many parents think of their child being considered a ‘handicap’ when

they hear that their child or children have a learning ‘disability.’

It is often a prominent miscue that their child will be stigmatized – which is so very often.  The parents must be informed and educated to the extent, where they understand that the child may not only be physically challenged but also has an emotional and mental difficulty, learning common concepts in the classroom.  Parents should also notice whether or not their child or children is progressing at the same rate as the other children in the class.  Therefore, the parents should always be in constant interaction and communication with the teachers, to help with the enhancement, improvement and development of these challenged students.
All the stakeholders - teachers, parents, school and the government must do all they can and more to guide

these students to overcome such disability and progress forward to a successful individual.

2. More Books for Children

The most significant aspect of the reading process for me has to be the use of literature. I have learnt from the inception of my tenure here at the University of the West Indies that reading is just more than learning how to identify and write words; it involves the interaction between the reader and the material read.  The plethora of strategies, methodologies and new reading innovations has impacted my pursuit of the literature based approach to learning.  I have discovered that this interaction with literature, especially children’s literature, has a lasting impact on children and the learning process.

One of the most important factors in a child’s early literacy development is the amount a child is read

to and with,  at the emergent years of their lives.  This process cannot be fostered without the critical use of

books.  As a literacy practitioner, I’m inspired to promote and promulgate the use of Children literature as a

means of literacy development.

When teachers use books as their means of instructional approach, it can help the child because the teacher can include activities such as shared reading, drama, art activities, puppetry, response journals and other kinds of writing and book talks by children.  It is clearly, using literature as the basis for classroom instruction; it takes into account that literature is not just "reading", but is a wealth of experiences to be shared and appreciated by those involved, especially the developing young readers - the children.

3. L.I.P.S. - Practicing What We Speak

An abrupt idea strolled through my mind the other day, and gave me a thought that I think will cross over the thresh hold of illiteracy in this country.

I realize that us as educators do not tend to practice what we preach. I believe that when one is educated to a certain level, one needs to impart that knowledge for the benefit of the wider society. Why are the vast majority of us being 'educators,' bask in our selfishness and complacency, and leave the uneducated, illiterate and ignorant minds in desolation? Kudos to those who have been and still are standing in the midst of the 'educational adversity.'

We need to teach what we were taught!! apply ourselves to the task of 'educational sacrifice' and commit our mind, body and soul to someone being elevated. Teachers' we need not only to teach, but to create, innovate, inspire, motivate, facilitate, encourage.

An innovation will be coming your way soon...look out for L.I.P.S. A cohort of innovators ready to 'deliver the goods' for the greater good of society. Look out, a change is coming!!
