1. Another year - -2013

It has been a while since I last managed to post anything here but I have been busy
working on my third book - -which is very exciting. You can find it on Amazon now
and it is called 'Riddle at Castle Cliff'.
I decided to post this old picture of myself and my best mate, ( when I was 11years old),
Graham getting ready to test drive our latest go-kart. We were always building new ones,
always trying to get them to go faster!!

2. Autumn break

The Autumn term week's holiday is here and I have time to add a new blog at last. During the last few weeks I have been working on the illustrations for my third book and I think I may just have hit on an idea for my fifth! Today I thought I would share with you a memorable moment from my time as a child living in Singapore. As you can see it involves monkeys!!! These are not in a zoo - -they lived wild in the trees and surroundings of a very special place called 'Tiger Balm Gardens.' The gardens were full of huge colourfully painted statues and small temples - -some of them quite scary. I will post a picture of one or two next time so you can see for yourself. I remember feeding this particular monkey because a few moments before he had jumped down from a tree and stolen my whole packet of peanuts from out of my hand. The Australian soldier who is behind me in the picture kindly gave me his peanuts to carry on feeding when he saw what happened! I was very lucky to live for three years in a country full of amazing creatures. Another time I will tell you about the snakes and the giant red ants!

3. It all begins . . .

I was born in Africa many moons ago in March of 1951 - -you can do the maths! Africa because that was where my dad was serving with the British army at the time. Years later, when my parents spoke of their time living there it was like they were describing a whole different world, one where even a humble army sergeant had three servants! The house they lived in was grandly called 'Hilltop Lodge' and was perched half way up a mountain. The picture above is the only one I have that shows the outside. Some interior shots show that the place was entirely made of wood, with the walls resembling those of a modern garden shed! It must have been quite high up on the mountain side because apparently, some mornings, clouds would drift in through the windows and through the rooms. There were a couple of unusual pets living at the house also - -but that is another story.

4. Gipsy.

Gypsy is a pony who appears in the first book 'The Secret of the Gilded Talon'. He is a bit of a wild character, unpredictable and not entirely to be trusted but loveable all the same. The children are fond of him and take him treats occasionally although Luke is especially wary of him having been nibbled once or twice! As a child I actually looked after Gypsy the pony for our local milkman who kept him mainly in the old orchard that backed onto the garden at the rear of the house where I lived.I remember getting my first big pair of 'grown-up' wellies as part of my job mucking out Gypsy's stable and feeding him every day. I had to choose my moment because he delighted in creeping up on me and nipping my arm when i wasn't looking!

5. Books.

I was an only child.
I suppose that is the reason why books very quickly became a big part of my life. Although I had friends, I lost them all regularly every two or thee years because my father was a sergeant in the army and postings to different countries were a feature of my early life. Add to this the fact that as a rule my friends were not welcome at my house: my father would not allow it, and the characters in the books I read were very real to me. They were constant companions in a sometimes lonely childhhood.

One of the earliest books I can remember reading and re-reading over again was titled 'Shadow the Sheepdog'. I can see the bright yellow hardcover now in my mind. It was of course by Enid Blyton and later in my reading career I was to discover the whole Secret Seven and Famous Five series from her also.
Owing to my father's dislike of children in the house I spent most of my pre-teen life outdoors playing with my mates. Our activities in many ways mirrored those of the children in Enid Blyton's adventure books and were easy for me to identify with in consequence.

6. Who I am.

Hello there and welcome to this blog - -the first I have ever written.
Recently I have restarted writing children's novels after a break of about 5 years in all. I was relieved to discover that I still enjoy the process as much as I ever did--although the biggest thrill always is when a reader tells you how much they enjoyed a book and ask when the next one is coming out!

I envisage this blog as an add-on to my author website. Here I hope to be able to share some personal details about my life that have influenced me in the way I write and  what I write about.

Let me say right off the bat that the stories I tell are mystery and adventure tales of the sort that I loved as a child, when I devoured all the books I could find by authors like Enid Blyton and Arthur Ransome.
