That ad is really kind of amazing. I wish it were easier to get information to kids at a younger age about what is right and wrong, in terms of the ways they are treated. When you grow up in a situation, it is very difficult to see it is wrong. I'm glad someone's trying.

I went to a local awards thing that the Chamber of Commerce did last week at which three high school seniors who intend to study business were awarded scholarships. They did a bio on each of the teens, and then they had time to speak. It was wonderful, truly. They were all delightful, bright, hard-working, and civic-minded. It is tiring to hear people bad-mouth young people, and what's even worse is that so few times does anyone ever do that while acknowledging that they, as adults, are active participants in creating these young people and their world. Someone should Piaget TIME.

This is on my wish list, especially when I discovered that the author wrote for Batman: The Animated Series. Plus, I love the premise.

I kept forgetting, too!! Then I did my usual browse through the new YA shelves at the library and it immediately caught my eye. I think you'll enjoy it--it was a good combo of murder mystery/suspense and supernatural fantasy.

I HAVE TO HAVE THIS BOOK! Will check the publication date and see when I can have this.

Because I loved their first project together so much, I was all over this. I love the artwork. I love that somewhere, things like Maker Faire and Junkyard War-style Bot Battles still exist, and that graphics exist to celebrate them. This was fun.

I'm still afraid to read this book. HBS was PERFECT. PER-FECT. I dunno about embroidering on perfection.

It is a really good sequel! I don't think it suffers from sequel-itis at all. :)

I loved how this book ended and thought that it brought together all the loose ends and gives a sense of closure more than the previous novel. I think it shows that hard work pays off and that if something is important to someone they will find a way to make it all work out.

Agreed, Jen--I've definitely been disappointed on multiple occasions when I've gone back to my Twitter feed to look for a link I posted and found it had evaporated.

And I'm in the market for a fun read so this just might do. I wondered about it.

I liked the "Soulless" series. I knew Carriger had done a YA book, and I was interested in reading it, but I didn't realize there would be a connection with the adult series. That only makes it more interesting for me.

@ Lin: I think it's a GREAT weekend read - fun to read between loads of laundry or whatnot.

@ Gail: I didn't finish the SOULLESS series - don't know why I was never alerted to the publication of the last book! - but I think the plot was starting to creak at the seams once the steampunk race-around-the-countryside elements were added. This is an almost necessary spin-off; the steampunk is now getting its due.

I'm sure she'll pop by and say so, but she mentioned that EVEN THOUGH she's an author with a reasonably well-known name, after 200,000 copies sold on a series of hers, the publisher has no plans to add sequels. I think that has something to do with her eagerness to try things on her own.

Thanks for the review! As to the question of why I went out on my own with this: I've had 32 books published since 2003, 23 of which have been with New York publishers. I've written for adults, teens and children, in almost every genre available. I think it's safe to say, then, that I like trying new things. So when the question is: Why do it this way?; the answer becomes: Why not do it this way?

Yes, I enjoyed Friends With Boys (which I learned about here, thanks to you), so I will definitely pick this up. Love the premise! I LOVE graphic novels of high school life. I read THE PLAIN JANES and JANES IN LOVE.

Oh, great--if you liked Friends With Boys I'm sure you'll enjoy this one. It had a very positive feel to it, which in this day and age of constant bullying overload, was refreshing without being cloying, if that makes sense.

I am glad I can keep looking forward to this wholeheartedly!

I'm guessing Bella was happier at the end of her series (I didn't read past TWILIGHT but heard the subsequent details from others) than Katniss was at the end of hers.

She was much happier, once she recovered from the rather unnatural childbirth. (I, alas, was not, since Book 4 spent about six chapters solely on their wedding.)

@ Jennifer: I was pretty gobsmacked to read about the ebook stuff - we really don't think about what our dependence on tech costs. Paperless world, yes... but... we either save trees, or decimate other resources. It's kind of surreal.

I've been reading a lot lately about how our device-hungry society is not exactly ecologically friendly...but I guess I'm mostly like the kids and teens: give me a good book in any form and I'll read it. I just happen to have an eensy-weensy paper fetish.

I believe I did read this one for the Cybils. Again - survival of the fittest, and the fact that there were "types" that were clearly labeled meant that while it was really intriguing, it didn't hold up against the sheer numbers we had this past year. Thanks for reviewing it - I just could NOT get to them all, when all was said/done.
